Bacteriological Quality Of Runoff Water From Pastureland, John W. Doran, D.M. Linn
Bacteriological Quality Of Runoff Water From Pastureland, John W. Doran, D.M. Linn
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Runoff from a cow-calf pasture in eastern Nebraska was monitored for total coliforms (TC), fecal coliforms (FC), and fecal streptococci (FS) during 1976, 1977, and 1978. Bacteriological counts in runoff from both grazed and ungrazed areas generally exceeded recommended water quality standards. The FC group was the best indicator group of the impact of grazing. Rainfall runoff from the grazed area contained 5 to 10 times more FC than runoff from the fenced, ungrazed area. There was little difference in TC counts between the two areas, but FS counts were higher in runoff from the ungrazed area and reflected the …

In the 1970's we have witnessed an explosion in the number of committtees, offices, positions within colleges, regional and national projects devoted to the renewal of institutions through "faculty development," especially the improvement of instruction. The spectre of "no growth" for higher education had accelerated a common concern for the quality of teaching and learning. By 1974 foundations such as Danforth, Kellogg and Lilly and agencies such as HEW -- especially its new Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education -- were seeding a variety of new teaching improvement programs. Many faculty and administrators were quickly launched into activities for …

Four Buyid coins in the collection of t he American Numismatic Society, struck between 358-68 H. /A.D. 968-79 at two mints in Jibal province, illustrate a phenomenon unique in the history of Islamic coinage. They concern the status of a die engraver named al-Hasan b. Muhammad. A silver dirham bearing his signature was first noted by George C. Miles and published in 1938. It was at that time the only Islamic coin known to bear the signature of a die engraver. More recently, four additional coins have been located which shed more light upon the career of this artisan. His …

Differentiation Of White-Tailed And Mule Deer Blood And Tissue By Isoelectric Focusing, David Oates, Ken Pearson, Nancy Dent
Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: White Papers, Conference Presentations, and Manuscripts
Blood and tissue samples from 66 white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginanus) and 69 mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) were examined by isoelectric focusing on polyacrylamide gel slabs in the pH range 6-9. Blood was differentiated via a general protein stain. Tissue differentiation required use of esterase patterns rather than general protein patterns. Esterase patterns of white-tailed and mule deer tissue differed considerably from each other in both number and location of esterase bands. Protein patterns for blood were not as distinctive as the esterase patterns were for tissue, but white-tailed and mule deer could still be differentiated from …

Modelling The Influence Of Eutrophication On The Coldwater Fishery Habitat Of Lake Mcconaughy, A "Two-Story" Reservoir, Melvin W. Taylor
Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Publications
The lifespan of the existing coldwater habitat in Lake McConaughy is unknown, To promulgate effective management and regulatory strategies, a method of predicting this lifespan was needed, Ideally, this procedure should also provide potential management philosophies that would retard eutrophication, The LAKSCI computerized simulation model of Systems Control, Inc, was modified to assist in solving this problem, Data for model input were collected from August 1976 to August 1978. When calibrated the model proved satisfactory for predicting water level and temperatures, but unsatisfactory in prediction of water chemistry without additional data and refinement,

Scanning And Transmission Electron Microscopy Of The Oocyst Wall Of Isospora Lacazei, Clarence A. Speer, Alan A. Marchiondo, Bodo Mueller, Donald W. Duszynski
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
The oocyst wall of Isospora lacazei from sparrows was studied with scanning (SEM) and transmission (TEM) electron microscopy. In TEM, t he oocyst wall consisted of four distinct layers (Ll-4). The innermost layer, Ll, was moderately electron-lucent and 240-285 nm thick; L2 was electronJense and 210-240 nm thick; L3 was moderately electron-lucent and 15-150 nm thick; L4, the outer most layer, was discontinuous and consisted of electron-dense discoid bodies which measured 180-220 nm x 320-840 nm. The discoid bodies of L4 as seen by TEM appeared spheroid in shape when observed by SEM. One or two membranes were situated on …

The leaf-nosed bats of the New World family Phyllostomatidae occur from the southwestern United States through tropical Central and South America. Members of this family are also found throughout the Antilles. The ecological associations of the species in this family seem to be rather broad; species are found in humid tropical to semiarid and arid subtropical environments. Diversity in feeding is readily apparent ranging from nectivores (Glossophaga), frugivores (Artibeus), sanguivores (Desmodus), to omnivores (Phyllostomus) (see review by Glass, 1970; Gardner, this volume).
To understand better the biology of phyllostomatid bats, it is …
Fertilizing Capacity And Ultrastructure Of Fowl And Turkey Spermatozoa Before And After Freezing, M. R. Bakst, T. J. Sexton
Fertilizing Capacity And Ultrastructure Of Fowl And Turkey Spermatozoa Before And After Freezing, M. R. Bakst, T. J. Sexton
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
The fertilizing capacity, motility and ultrastructure of fowl and turkey spermatozoa were examined at various stages of the freezing process. For both species, fertility and motility were depressed after equilibration with dimethylsulphoxide at 5 °C. After freezing, motility was maintained at 55% for fowl spermatozoa and 40% for turkey spermatozoa; however, fertility was 55% for the fowl and 0% for the turkey. Qualitatively, the damage to the spermatozoa of both species was nearly identical, as revealed by scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The plasmalemma was the primary site of damage. 'Bent' spermatozoa, coiled tails and swollen mitochondria were also present. …

Bacteriocin-Like Substances Produced By Rhizobium Japonicum And Other Slow-Growing Rhizobia, D. C. Gross, A. K. Vidaver
Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications
Bacteriocin-like substances were commonly produced by slow-growing Rhizobium japonicum and cowpea rhizobia on an L-arabinose medium. Antagonism between strains of R. japonicum was not detected in vitro; however, such strains were often sensitive to some bacteriocins produced by cowpea rhizobia. Inhibitory zones (2 to 8 mm from colony margins), produced by 58 of 66 R. japonicum test strains, were reproducibly detected with Corynebacterium nebraskense as an indicator. Quantitative production was not related to symbiotic properties of effective strains, since nine noninfective strains and one ineffective strain produced bacteriocin. Eight R. japonicum strains that did not produce bacteriocin nevertheless formed effective …
The Status Of Student Press Freedom In Nebraska’S High Schools, Robin W. Hadfield
The Status Of Student Press Freedom In Nebraska’S High Schools, Robin W. Hadfield
Open Access Master's Theses (through 2010)
Have student rights to a free press advanced during the period since certain free expression rights of high school students were established by the U.S. Supreme Court in 1969? Are students censored in what they print in their high school newspapers? And if they are, who is doing the censoring – principals, advisers or the student themselves? In an attempt to examine these questions, the author undertook a study of student press rights in Nebraska’s high schools. Previous cases and literature on the topic were studied and a survey was taken of Nebraska high school principals and high school press …

A Public Information Program On Predator Damage Control, David S. Decalesta
A Public Information Program On Predator Damage Control, David S. Decalesta
Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 8th (1978)
A public information and education program was developed in Oregon to defuse a controversy between environmentalists and livestock growers over management of predator damage control. Emphasis was placed on involving special interest and leadership/influential groups in the program and participa-tion was high. Attempts were made to involve the "general public" but response to solicitation and participation were low. Participating groups thought the program was of high value and expressed the need for additional information. Attitudes and beliefs of the special interest groups were changed little by the program, but constructive communications between the groups increased and the controversy dwindled. A …

Influences On The Science Of Animal Damage Control, John R. Wood
Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 8th (1978)
This paper is about the complexity of animal damage control science and its research, methods development, and control applications. It is not the point here to discourse on the individual methodology used in animal damage control research. The discussion is to point out that many researchers, wildlife managers, bureaucrats, or advocates fail to understand the situation in the science of animal damage control and its attendant problems that need resolution. Leaf Spot Of Field Corn Caused By Pseudimonas Andropogonis, Anne K. Vidaver, Randall R. Carlson
Biological Process Development Facility: Staff Publications
A leaf spot of field corn was shown to be caused by the bacterium Pseudomonas andropogonis. Leaf spot symptoms were observed over 3 years in several States. Inoculation of corn by vacuum infiltration of the bacteria was necessary to reproduce field symptoms.
A bacterial leaf spot disease of different cultivars of field corn was observed in early summer of 1973, 1974, and 1975. Leaves with essentially the same symptoms were obtained from South Dakota, Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, and Michigan. The same symptoms were also seen in Wisconsin. Symptoms consisted of circular to ellipsoidal, tan to brown spots, with irregular …
