Predator Depredations On Sheep In Pennsylvania, Gary W. Witmer, Arnold Hayden, Michael Pipas
Predator Depredations On Sheep In Pennsylvania, Gary W. Witmer, Arnold Hayden, Michael Pipas
Eastern Wildlife Damage Control Conference: 6th (1993)
The eastern coyote (Canis latrans) has become common and widespread in many eastern states. We surveyed 331 sheep producers in Pennsylvania (PA); 22% reported predator losses in 1991, primarily to dogs and coyotes. Losses were heaviest in the southwest part of PA and producers reporting losses tended to have more sheep and more acreage in pasture. To reduce losses, producers used lambing sheds, fences, guard dogs and donkeys, confinement of sheep, trapping, and shooting. It appears that we can expect greater depredations in the future because of increased coyote numbers and a relatively low level of protection of sheep; however, …

Forks In The Road: Challenges And Rewards, Quentin Faulkner
Forks In The Road: Challenges And Rewards, Quentin Faulkner
Glenn Korff School of Music: Faculty Publications
Using music as a focal point, although another of the arts might serve as well, I have discovered that the arts are a kind of camera obscura of society. Like that optical wonder, they reduce the whole of its identity-sanctions and values, sacred and secular beliefs and customs--to a faithful reflection in miniature, in living colors (Mantle Hood, The Ethnomusicologist. New York: McGraw-Hill, 1982, p. xviii).
The author of this statement, Mantle Hood, is an ethnomusicologist, one who studies the music of cultures outside those in the western European tradition (his perspective is therefore a global one). If what he …
Ph Homeostasis In Lactic Acid Bacteria, Robert W. Hutkins, Nancy L. Nannen
Ph Homeostasis In Lactic Acid Bacteria, Robert W. Hutkins, Nancy L. Nannen
Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications
The ability of lactic acid bacteria to regulate their cytoplasmic or intracellular pH is one of the most important physiological requirements of the cells. Cells unable to maintain a near neutral intracellular pH during growth or storage at low extracellular pH may lose viability and cellular activity. Despite the importance of pH homeostasis in the lactic acid bacteria, however, an understanding of cytoplasmic pH regulation has only recently begun to emerge. This review describes the specific effects of low pH on lactic acid bacteria, reports recent research on the physiological role of intracellular pH as a regulator of various metabolic …

Effect Of Organic Matter Decomposition Level On Bacterial Species Diversity And Composition In Relationship To Pythium Damping-Off Severity, Michael J. Boehm, L.V. Mdden, H.A.J. Hoitink
Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications
Rhizosphere bacteria were isolated from root tip segments of cucumber seedlings grown in a suppressive, slightly decomposed light-colored peat mix, a conducive, more decomposed dark-colored peat mix, and a suppressive dark peat mix amended with composted hardwood bark. The bacteria were identified by a gas chromatographic fatty acid methyl ester analysis. The total number of taxa recovered from a single root tip segment ranged from 9 to 18. No single taxon predominated on all root tip segments harvested from any of the mixes. The highest relative population density reached by a given taxon on any root tip segment was 45%. …

Pregnancy Prevention In Early Adolescence: A Developmental Perspective, Lisa J. Crockett, Joanne S. Chopak
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
Although there is widespread interest in preventing teenage pregnancy, few interventions have been directed toward young adolescents. In part this neglect is understandable because adolescents under age 15 account for only a small percentage of teenage pregnancies (Pittman & Adams, 1988). At the same time, the lack of attention to younger adolescents is unfortunate on several counts. First, an increasing number of young adolescents are at risk. Rates of sexual activity have been rising in this group (Hofferth, Kahn, & Baldwin, 1987) and, because young adolescents are typically not consistent or effective contraceptive users, an increasing number of girls are …

INTSORMIL Impacts and Bulletins
Sustainable production of food and forage with a focus on plant adaptation to stress environments will be a continued priority for developing countries in the future. Since many areas of the world which support substantial human populations are drought prone, such as the subsaharan African zone and others, the primary focus has been on drought. However, one of the greatest restraints to sustainability of agriculture worldwide is the lack of sufficient soil nutrients for crop growth, or other soil constraints such as acidity or salinity which hinder crop production substantially.
Optimizing soil fertility or amending acid and saline soils to …

Environmental Impact Assessment In Practice: Exploring The Contradictions, Joel Novek
Environmental Impact Assessment In Practice: Exploring The Contradictions, Joel Novek
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
Since its introduction into Canada in 1973, Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) has been controversial. Proponents argue that EIA is a practical means of achieving sustainable development because major projects are subject to an independent review before they are issued a license to proceed. However, the government's role in promoting resource-based development such as the ALPAC pulp mill (northern Alberta) and the Repap mills (northern Manitoba) has attracted considerable resistance. Public opposition to pulp and paper megaprojects in western Canada has reinforced the contradiction between the government's role as development promoter and as protector of northern resources and aboriginal populations.

Groundwater Velocity In An Unconfined Aquifer With Rectangular Areal Recharge, Vitaly A. Zlotnik, Glenn Ledder
Groundwater Velocity In An Unconfined Aquifer With Rectangular Areal Recharge, Vitaly A. Zlotnik, Glenn Ledder
Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications
Three-dimensionsal solutions for the hydraulic head and velocity components for transient groundwater flow in an unconfined compressible aquifer of finite thickness with a rectangular areal recharge source are analyzed using a linearized mathematical model. The solution generalizes Dagan's (1967) results, which were obtained for an idealized aquifer of infinite thickness, and Hantush's (1967) results, which were derived using the Dupuit assumptions. Hydraulic head and velocity components are estimated by asymptotic methods for large times, which are most appropriate for contaminant transport problems. Numerical analysis of the solution demonstrates spatial features of the velocity components in general and a transient effect …

The Polymerase Chain Reaction And Plant Disease Diagnosis, Joan M. Henson, Roy C. French
The Polymerase Chain Reaction And Plant Disease Diagnosis, Joan M. Henson, Roy C. French
Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications
The polymerase chain reaction (PCR) provides a simple, ingenious method to exponentially amplify specific DNA sequences by in vitro DNA synthesis. Three essential steps to PCR (Figure 1) include (a) melting of the target (b) annealing of two oligonucleotide primers to the denatured DNA strands, and (c) primer extension by a thermostable DNA polymerase (123). Newly synthesized DNA strands serve as targets for subsequent DNA synthesis as the three steps are repeated up to 50 times. The specificity of the method derives from the synthetic oligonucleotide primers, which base-pair to and define each end of the target sequence to be …
Women, Economics, And The Concept Of The Market: A Second Look At Reaganomics, Ann Mari May
Women, Economics, And The Concept Of The Market: A Second Look At Reaganomics, Ann Mari May
College of Business: Faculty Publications
Economic performance during the Reagan years fell far short of the hyperbole surrounding the 1980s. Touted as a period of robust economic expansion, in retrospect, the Reagan years did not produce unusually high growth in total output, resulted in relatively high overall unemployment rates, and ushered in a new era of increased economic instability [May, forthcoming]. During this period of disappointing growth, women and minorities became especially marginalized.

Nanostructural Effects And Interface Magnetism In Co/Pd Multilayers, Ping He, Z.-S. Shan, John A. Woollam, David J. Sellmyer
David Sellmyer Publications
A series of Co/Pd multilayers were made by dc magnetron sputter deposition on Al foil substrates. For these multilayered samples, Co layer thicknesses were less than 4 Å and Pd layers were varied from 4 to 22 Å. Sputtering rates were controlled by either sputtering power (10–50 W) or Ar sputtering pressure (3–15 mTorr). In both cases, lower deposition rates yielded higher perpendicular coercivity up to 2.6 kOe. Structures of the samples were studied using conventional θ -2θ x-ray diffractometry (XRD). It has been found that magnetic properties such as coercivity and saturation magnetization are sensitive to interfacial structures. A …

(Co 3 Å/Pt 10 Å)× N (N=8, 16, and 30 bilayers) multilayer thin films were prepared by sputtering onto an 850-Å-thick SiN layer that had been deposited on a silicon (111) substrate. We used the polar Kerr effect to measure the time dependence of magnetization reversal over the temperature range 90–300 K. Direct domain observations were also carried out. The results show that the domain expansion process depends strongly on the number of bilayers. Uniform domain expansion was found only in the thinner samples. From the time dependence of the magnetization reversal measurements over the temperature range 90–300 …

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications
An assay to identify tissue culture cells infected with bovine respiratory syncytial virus (BRSV) that utilizes reverse transcription (RT), the polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and a synthetic oligonucleotide hybridization probe has been developed. The RT-PCR assay uses a BRSV-specific negative-sense oligonucleotide primer to synthesize cDNA from a BRSV fusion protein mRNA template and another BRSV-specific oligonucleotide primer (positive sense) upstream from the negative-sense primer for PCR amplification. In the presence of mRNA templates of BRSV isolates originating from locations throughout the United States, the BRSV RT-PCR assay resulted in amplified products (381 bp) that were specific to BRSV, as demonstrated …
Relations Between Social Skills And High-Risk Sexual Interactions Among Adolescents, Douglas W. Nangle, David J. Hansen
Relations Between Social Skills And High-Risk Sexual Interactions Among Adolescents, Douglas W. Nangle, David J. Hansen
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
Researchers have begun to employ social-skills training in efforts to change the sexual behavior of adolescents. However, despite the promise of social-skills training, little is known about how social skills are related to the sexual practices of adolescents. The present article reviews the current literature and proposes a conceptual framework for understanding the relations between social skills and sexual behavior of adolescents by (a)examining the relationship between sexual activity and social skills, (b) examining the development of sexual-interaction skills and deficits, (c) summarizing what is currently known about the relations between social skills and sexual behavior, (d) discussing current issues …

Saving The Past To Enrich The Future: A Plan For Preserving Information Resources In Kansas, Katherine L. Walter
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications
Report of the Kansas Library Network Board's Preservation Committee to the citizens of Kansas
As the twenty-first century approaches, Kansas librarians, archivists, genealogists, records managers, and historians are seeking solutions to a crisis.
The crisis is the disintegration of the state's information resources. Documents recording births, deaths, inheritances and laws are all susceptible to the degradation of the materials on which they are recorded.
Neither paper nor optical disk will survive forever—acidic paper becomes embrittled in 50–80 years; optical disks and the equipment to access the information upon them may not last fifteen years.
