The Contributions And Challenges Of Family Communication To The Field Of Communication, Sandra Petronio, Dawn O. Braithwaite Feb 1993

The Contributions And Challenges Of Family Communication To The Field Of Communication, Sandra Petronio, Dawn O. Braithwaite

Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications

As the Family Communication Commission in the Speech Communication Association is off to a good start, it seems appropriate to bring attention to the contributions and challenges studying family communication has for the discipline of communication. More than a decade ago, Bochner (1976) outlined several fruitful areas of investigation. Clearly, people heeded Bochner’s persuasive arguments and produced research on family communication problems (e.g., Bochner & Eisenberg, 1987; Fitzpatrick, 1988; Noller & Fitzpatrick, 1988; Petronio, 1982; Sillars, Weisberg, Burggraff, & Wilson, 1987). But, the need to examine family communication in more depth is essential to the growth and development of the …

1. Curriculum-Based Measurement, Stanley L. Deno Jan 1993

1. Curriculum-Based Measurement, Stanley L. Deno

Curriculum-Based Measurement

In the history of Greek mythology there is a character named Sisyphus who, for sins committed during his lifetime, is condemned to spend eternity pushing a boulder up a hill. No matter how hard Sisyphus tries as he nears the top of the hill, the boulder rolls back down. Sisyphus cannot escape from this continued cycle of effort and failure. Sometimes, when I think about the experiences of many children attempting to learn basic skills in the public schools, I think of the myth of Sisyphus. Too often, it seems to me, no matter how hard they try, they do …

Curriculum-Based Measurement- Complete Work, Jane Close Conoley, Jack J. Kramer

Curriculum-Based Measurement

This volume in the Buros-Nebraska Series on Measurement and Testing provides current information on the development and implementation of curriculum-based measurement. As the title of the volume suggests, effective measurement of children's classroom achievement is not a new problem. Curriculum-based measurement provides an interesting and useful alternative to traditional strategies for assessing academic performance. This volume continues the tradition of including papers given at the annual Buros-Nebraska Symposium on Testing and Measurement as well as additional contributions selected especially for this book. Each of our authors has made significant contributions to the research that has been produced in the area …

Chapter 13 Drought Mitigation In The United States: Progress By State Government, Donald A. Wilhite, Steven L. Rhodes Jan 1993

Chapter 13 Drought Mitigation In The United States: Progress By State Government, Donald A. Wilhite, Steven L. Rhodes

National Drought Mitigation Center: Faculty Publications

Drought has been a recurrent feature of the American landscape in recent years, resulting in significant impacts in many economic sectors, including agriculture, transportation, energy, recreation, and health; it has also had adverse environmental consequences. For ex-ample, the economic impacts of the 1976–77 and 1988 droughts have been estimated at nearly $35 billion and $40 billion, respectively (NOAA, 1982; Riebsame et al., 1990). Other drought years, such as 1980, 1983, 1986, and 1989–91, resulted in significant losses as well. The present and future impacts of the current (1992) drought in the western states and in portions of the east are …

Chapter 6 Planning For Drought: A Methodology, Donald A. Wilhite Jan 1993

Chapter 6 Planning For Drought: A Methodology, Donald A. Wilhite

National Drought Mitigation Center: Faculty Publications

Developing a national or provincial drought policy and plan is a complicated but essential first step toward a reduction of societal vulnerability. Until recently, nations had devoted little effort toward drought planning, preferring instead the crisis management approach. Presently, an increasing number of nations are pursuing a more proactive approach that emphasizes the principles of risk management and sustainable development. Because of the multitude of impacts associated with drought and the numerous governmental agen-cies that have responsibility for some aspect of monitoring, assessment, mitigation, and planning, developing a policy and plan must be an integrated process within and between levels …

Use Of Calcium Alginate To Immobilize Antimicrobial Agents On Beef Tissue, Gregory R. Siragusa, James S. Dickson Jan 1993

Use Of Calcium Alginate To Immobilize Antimicrobial Agents On Beef Tissue, Gregory R. Siragusa, James S. Dickson

Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports

Even under the best of slaughtering and processing conditions, beef carcasses will become naturally contaminated with some bacteria from the animal's hide, hair, hooves, and the abattoir environment. This contamination is mostly composed of bacteria which are harmless, but which can ultimately cause spoilage of the beef. The shelflife of raw beef is largely determined by the numbers and types of these bacteria. Since some bacterial contamination will always be present on beef, it is desirable to reduce these numbers to decrease the rate of spoilage, increase refrigerated shelflife, and further ensure the microbiological safety of raw beef before consumption. …

Transport Of Co2+ In A Physically And Chemically Heterogeneous Porous Medium, Mark L. Brusseau, John M. Zachara Jan 1993

Transport Of Co2+ In A Physically And Chemically Heterogeneous Porous Medium, Mark L. Brusseau, John M. Zachara

United States Department of Energy: Publications

The fate of radionuclides in the subsurface is of critical importance to the planning, siting, and evaluation of repositories for radioactive wastes. Mathematical models are an integral component of this process. An accurate understanding of radionuclide transport is required to successfully formulate and use these models. It is well-known that the subsurface is both physically and chemically heterogeneous. Recent research has shown that the resultant spatial variability of hydraulic conductivity and of sorption capacity can significantly affect solute transport in the subsurface. The impact of hydraulic conductivity variability and sorption capacity variability on the transport of radionuclides is, therefore, of …

G93-1147 Preventing Bacterial Contamination, Medication And Other Chemical Residues In Poultry Meat And Eggs, Eva Wallner-Pendleton, Norman Schneider, Susan Sumner

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This NebGuide deals with food safety in home broiler or table egg production flocks.

Food safety issues such as drug and pesticide residues and bacterial contamination have received a lot of attention from the media lately. While this attention has focused predominantly on practices by the large commercial livestock and poultry industries, procedures to assure food safety and quality should be practiced by home flock producers as well.

Two Guys From Lincoln: Cameron Shaw And Craig Roper, Daphne A. Deeds Jan 1993

Two Guys From Lincoln: Cameron Shaw And Craig Roper, Daphne A. Deeds

Sheldon Museum of Art: Catalogs and Publications

Two Guys from Lincoln: Cameron Shaw and Craig Roper offers the work of two contemporary artists who are inheritors of the anti-art tradition that continued in the wake of Duchamp with Warhol's use of popular imagery and, more recently, Koons' controversial kitsch sculpture. Though distinct in their visions of art and the world, Shaw and Roper share more than their home town. As social and aesthetic contemporaries these two artists arrive at conclusions that suggest a generational commonality. Both artists use assemblage to address issues such as the disillusionment of youth, emblems of male dominance, the ambiguity of history, and …

EARTH AND FIRE: CERAMICS FROM THE SHELDON MEMORIAL ART GALLERY, the sixth annual Sheldon Statewide exhibition is a diverse selection of ceramics made in America during the past 100 years. From delicate Victorian vases to commercial ware of the early twentieth century and contemporary sculptural works, this comprehensive assembly truly offers something for everyone.

Though EARTH AND FIRE addresses the American connibution to the ceramics tradition, clay vessels and figures have been formed by nearly every culture since the beginning of civilization. These objects, made of the very earth itself, were not only utilitarian, but also often ritualistic or created …

Faculty Development Programs: A Perspective, Sandra Hellyer, Erwin Boschmann

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

This article describes a study which reviewed information on faculty development programs gathered from 94 institutions of higher learning. The authors collected information to identify common practices of faculty development programs. Elements reportedly used most frequently by institutions include workshops, individual consultations, and resource centers. The authors conclude by mentioning some innovative approaches to faculty development, as well as some new initiatives undertaken at their own institution as a result of their findings.

Teaching The Technology Of Teaching: A Faculty Development Program For New Faculty, Ray Shackelford Jan 1993

Teaching The Technology Of Teaching: A Faculty Development Program For New Faculty, Ray Shackelford

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

The primary function of institutions of higher education is to facilitate learning. New faculty are hired yearly with the expectation that they will match student needs with effective learning experiences. But many incoming faculty, although knowledgeable in their fields, enter higher education with limited preparation or experience in teaching. This can reduce the effectiveness of the teaching/learning process. The question is: "How can faculty with limited teaching experience be helped to strengthen their teaching effectiveness?" To examine this question, this article will describe the development, implementation, and qualitative and quantitative assessment of an innovative faculty development program entitled "Teaching the …

Helping Faculty Integrate Technology In Research And Teaching: Cart At Bridgewater State College, Terry Anne Vigil, Gail Price, Uma Shama, Karen Stonely

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

This article describes Bridgewater State College's Center for the Advancement of Research and Teaching (CART). CART's role is to prepare all faculty and librarians to take advantage of the opportunities that the new Center for Tecyhnological Applications will make available for the teaching and learning process, not only for students but for faculty. The challenge for CART is to integrate traditional faculty development with technological training as one more tool for the practitioner to enhance teaching and learning. Bridgewater's program has successfully attracted faculty to educational technology, encouraged teaching and research projects through a summer small grants program, and built …

1. Matching Measurement Instruction To Classroom-Based Evaluation: Perceived Discrepancies, Needs, And Challenges, Arlen R. Gullickson Jan 1993

1. Matching Measurement Instruction To Classroom-Based Evaluation: Perceived Discrepancies, Needs, And Challenges, Arlen R. Gullickson

Teacher Training in Measurement and Assessment Skills

Teacher knowledge about measurement, testing practices, and what teachers should be taught have been recurrent topics of concern in the past two and a half decades. Conant (1963) first captured measurement professionals' interest with his book The Education of American Teachers. That book stimulated a National Council on Measurement in Education (NCME) symposium regarding the implications of his recommendations for measurement instruction. Papers presented at the meeting were published in the first volume of the Journal of Educational Measurement (JEM). Thus, in a sense, the issue before us is one of the most enduring in the NCME organization.

G93-1169 Coalitions For Building Community Understanding (Revised April 1994), Georgia L. Stevens Jan 1993

G93-1169 Coalitions For Building Community Understanding (Revised April 1994), Georgia L. Stevens

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This NebGuide identifies eight steps for coalitions involved in building community understanding and applies them to the issue of school-age child care.

The process of building community understanding is an important one, regardless of the area of concern. As more and more citizens recognize a particular problem, that problem moves from the private to the public domain and requires the involvement of a larger segment of the community. Though this NebGuide deals specifically with the example of school-age child care, the process of involving the whole community is relevant to any area of policy-making.
