Teacher Bias And Elementary Student Disciplinary Outcomes, Madeline A. Griffitt Mar 2026

Teacher Bias And Elementary Student Disciplinary Outcomes, Madeline A. Griffitt

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Capstones

The discipline of students has long been an issue in schools. Children and teenagers are just that, and they will misbehave. However, the discipline gap clearly indicates that responses to misbehavior are different for different students (Lorenzetti & Johnson, 2023; Santiago-Rosario et al., 2021). Black students are disciplined more frequently and more severely than any of their peers (Kupchik & Ward, 2014; Welsh & Rodriguez, 2024). This study investigates what, if any, relationship exists between a teacher’s race, gender, age, and bias score (as measured by Project Implicit’s (n.d.) single category race implicit bias test) and the number of referrals …

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a prevalent neurodevelopmental condition associated with impairments across educational, occupational, and social domains. Individuals with ADHD are often exposed to misunderstanding and negative evaluation, which can contribute to stigma and psychological distress. Recently, “masking”—efforts to conceal or compensate for ADHD-related characteristics to meet social expectations—has been discussed as a potential behavioral response to stigma, yet empirical research on this phenomenon remains limited. This narrative review synthesizes English-language research on public stigma and self-stigma related to ADHD and examines how stigma may be associated with masking behaviors in ADHD, drawing on conceptual insights from the literature on …

Makara Journal of Science

Cancer is one of the deadliest diseases nowadays, and tyrosine kinase receptors play crucial roles in cancer cell survival, differentiation, proliferation, and migration. This study designed and developed a new inhibitor from heterocyclic-based xanthone derivatives to target two tyrosine kinase receptors, epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and platelet-derived growth factor receptor (PDGFR), through in silico screening. Eighteen heterocyclic-based xanthones were evaluated through molecular docking for both receptors. All heterocyclic-based xanthones gave the root mean square deviation (RMSD) value lower than 2.00 Å. Xanthone with isobenzothiazole substituent (iBzThio) was found as the most potent inhibitor with binding energies of -10.60 and …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Abdominal aortic calcification (AAC), a marker of subclinical cardiovascular disease, has previously shown to be associated with low BMD and fracture. However, it remains unclear whether AAC is associated with trabecular bone score (TBS), a gray-level textural measure, or whether it predicts fracture risk independent of this measure. Here, we examined the cross-sectional association of AAC scored using a validated machine learning algorithm (ML-AAC24) with TBS, and their simultaneous associations with incident fractures in 7691 individuals (93.4% women) through the Manitoba BMD Registry (mean age 75.3 yr). The association between ML-AAC24 and TBS was tested using generalized linear regression. Cox …

"Finding Greatness Elsewhere": Racial Discrimination And The Attrition Of Black Women In School Psychology Training Programs, Asya Tiani Miles

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Prior literature identifies discriminatory school experiences as a factor in Black women’s thoughts of leaving school psychology training programs (Jackson, 2023; Proctor, 2009). However, no studies have thoroughly examined how intersecting racial and gender discrimination contributes to Black women’s decisions to follow through with leaving. In addressing this gap, participants included eight Black women who left their programs between 2017 and 2023 due to discriminatory treatment. A reflexive thematic qualitative design was employed, and the following themes emerged: microaggressions, harsher evaluation and academic underestimation, alienation and exclusion, unsuccessful attempts to make the environment more bearable, and finding greatness elsewhere. Implications …

Indonesia’S Archipelagic Healthcare: Lessons From Sumenep Regency In Promotion, Prevention, And Overcoming Disparity, Restu Karlina Rahayu, Tia Subekti, Andi Setiawan

Asia-Pacific Social Science Review

This study examines healthcare in Indonesia’s archipelagic region, using semi-structured qualitative interviews with 20 informants, including island residents, medical professionals, and government officials. Findings reveal inadequate medical facilities on the islands, particularly for emergencies. For instance, there is only one hospital on Arajasa Island, established in 2023, while smaller, less populated islands rely solely on public health centers staffed by general practitioners, lacking specialists. Patients requiring specialized care must be referred to an off-island hospital, but transportation is limited and weather-dependent, leading to high personal costs if ships or boats are unavailable. In response, the Sumenep government has implemented initiatives, …

Revisiting The Double Movement In Development: A Systematic Review Of Polanyian Counter-Movements, Yuli Isnadi, Asmarawati Handoyo, Chin-Fu Hung

Asia-Pacific Social Science Review

The concept of the double movement, as expounded by Polanyi (1944/2001), has been a focal point of interest for numerous scholars. However, it is evident that more concerted efforts are required to foster a substantive dialogue among these scholars. Goodwin (2018) took a significant step by initiating a constructive discussion aimed at revitalizing the double movement theory, with the intent of rendering it pertinent to addressing the socioeconomic challenges faced by societies in the Global South. Regrettably, Goodwin’s approach, which primarily leans towards a political system perspective, is not without its limitations. Therefore, this article proposes a societal approach that …

Offside Trap: African Football As A Mirror Of Global Structural Inequality, Ellen Busolo Milimu Mar 2026

Offside Trap: African Football As A Mirror Of Global Structural Inequality, Ellen Busolo Milimu

Journal of Global South Sport Studies

Football in Africa, as a legacy of European colonialism, is undeniable. The export of football through colonization resulted in the popularization of the sport while also creating a system of economic exploitation and impoverishment that is the cause of considerable problems for African society. This economic system positioned African  countries as dependents of former colonizers even after achieving independence. Sports, specifically football, provide a unique perspective to explore the no-win     situation in which Africa exists within the global economic system. Always chasing the elusive ‘development’ goal that is dictated by others and shifts without the interests of African countries. The …
