Review Of The Horse In Blackfoot Indian Culture By John C. Ewers, Mary Jane Schneider
Review Of The Horse In Blackfoot Indian Culture By John C. Ewers, Mary Jane Schneider
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
The reprinting of The Horse in Blackfoot Indian Culture makes it possible for a new generation of plains anthropologists and historians to savor this book, long a basic reference. When Ewers began fieldwork on the Blackfoot Reservation in 1941, one of his concerns was the description of the role of the horse in Blackfoot and Plains Indian culture. Although concerned primarily with the Blackfoot, he also assembled pertinent ethnographic and historical data from other tribes.
Beginning with a general review of the acquisition of horses by North American Indians, the first chapter ends with a discussion of the acquisition of …

Review Of The Pirst Polish Americans: Silesian Settlements In Texas By T. Lindsay Baker, Maria Starczewska- Lambasa
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
Though sporadic arrivals of Poles into the United States had started much earlier, it was onl y in 1854 that Polish immigration led to the establishment of the first self-contained Polish community and parish. It was perhaps a trick played by history that the first settlements of Silesian Poles sprang up in the San Antonio area of Texas rather than in an area such as Connecticut, which in many respects is geographically more like Poland. The large stream of Polish immigrants arriving in this country in the latter part of the nineteenth century and in the early twentieth moved to …
Missouri National Recreational River: Native American Cultural Resources, John Ludwickson, Donald Blakeslee, John O'Shea
Missouri National Recreational River: Native American Cultural Resources, John Ludwickson, Donald Blakeslee, John O'Shea
United States Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District
An inventory of known and identifiable cultural resources referrable to Native American populations was undertaken for a corridor along the new Missouri National Recreational River, roughly from Gavin's Foint Dam to Ponca, Nebraska. These resources included archaeological sites and collections, ethnographic and ethnohistorical data and relevant environmental background information. Using these data the Native American occupation of the Missouri National Recreational River area was synthesized into a regional overview which stresses culture-historical developments and changing adaptations to the natural environment. Problems for continuing research utilizing existing archaeological collections were developed, and recommendations for continued field work to fill in gaps …

Dearth And Bias: Issues In The Editing Of Ethnohistorical Materials, Patricia Galloway
Dearth And Bias: Issues In The Editing Of Ethnohistorical Materials, Patricia Galloway
Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)
It is in these two problem areas, lack of material and ethnocentric bias, that the historical editor can best offer help to the ethnohistorian. The importance of any single early colonial document containing description of preliterate peoples in North America is almost incalculable. In some few instances our knowledge of the very existence of individual tribes rests upon such a single document. 5 For this reason the historical editor should consider the needs of ethnohistory when he is choosing documents to edit for publication. The modern growth of interest in social history has broken the hold of the "Great White …
Toward A History Of Plains Archeology, Waldo R. Wedel
Toward A History Of Plains Archeology, Waldo R. Wedel
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
First viewed by white men in 1541, the North American Great Plains remained little known and largely misunderstood for nearly three centuries. The newcomers from Europe were impressed by the seemingly endless grasslands, the countless wild cattle, and the picturesque tent-dwelling native people who followed the herds, subsisting on the bison and dragging their possessions about on dogs. Neither these Indians nor the grasslands nor their fauna had any counterparts in the previous experience of the Spaniards. Later Euro-American expeditions, whether seeking gold, converts, or furs, added many details of much interest, but likewise found no wealth of minerals, too …
The Role Of Language In The Theory Of Communication Of Nicolas Malebranche, Thomas M. Carr Jr.
The Role Of Language In The Theory Of Communication Of Nicolas Malebranche, Thomas M. Carr Jr.
French Language and Literature Papers
Nicolas Malebranche (1638–1715) is perhaps the most important French philosopher between Descartes and the Revolution of 1789. His synthesis of Cartesian elements and Augustinianism in the last quarter of the seventeenth century had great influence on several generations of thinkers before the rationalism he represented was replaced by the new Lockian sensualism. There has been a European revival of interest in Malebranche in the last twenty years, centering around the first critical edition of his complete works, a task headed by the Belgian historian of philosophy André Robinet, and there are signs that American interest is growing as well with …

Representation And Process In Reasoning About Logical Relationships, David Moshman
Representation And Process In Reasoning About Logical Relationships, David Moshman
Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications
According to a popular conception of reasoning, the thinker first mentally represents given information and then processes the resulting representations. It is commonly assumed, at least implicitly, that difficulty of the representation step is solely a function of facility with the form and content of the information to be represented, while difficulty of the processing step is solely a function of facility with the operation(s) necessary to meet the task requirements. Within this two-step information processing model, form/content variables and task requirements should thus have an additive effect on problem difficulty. To test this prediction, 72 male students in grades …
Ethnicity On The Great Plains: Preface & Introduction, Frederick C. Luebke
Ethnicity On The Great Plains: Preface & Introduction, Frederick C. Luebke
Department of History: Faculty Publications
Immigrants from Europe formed a major element in the population that settled the Great Plains in the nineteenth century; their descendants constitute the majority of persons in many parts of the region today. A century ago, as the agricultural frontier moved across central Nebraska onto what is considered the Great Plains, foreignborn persons consistently formed a much larger proportion of the inhabitants on the western edge of settlement than they did in the state as a whole. Some years later the census of 1890 revealed that in North Dakota, for example, 42.7 percent of the population of that newly admitted …

Legal Restrictions On Foreign Languages In The Great Plains States, 1917-1923, Frederick C. Luebke
Department of History: Faculty Publications
A major effect of World War I on American social history was that it focused attention on the nation's apparent difficulty in assimilating the millions of immigrants and their children who had streamed to the United States during the preceding two decades. The national mood, darkened by fears and resentments of long standing and deepened by systematic wartime propaganda, favored the adoption of stringent laws limiting the use of foreign languages, especially in the schools. During the war itself, restrictions were usually extralegal and often the consequences of intense social pressure recklessly applied. After the war, however, many state legislatures …

The Interaction Of Behavior Variables In The Development Of Dominance Relations, Patricia Draper
The Interaction Of Behavior Variables In The Development Of Dominance Relations, Patricia Draper
Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications
Dominance interactions among individuals undoubtedly have both a biological basis and evolutionary significance. Literature on these topics has been copiously cited elsewhere in this book and will not be repeated here. Sex differences in behaviors which separately and together culminate in the ability of an individual to win agonistic encounters are also documented both for human and nonhuman primates. Less attention has been paid, however, to the process by which sex differences in the propensity to behave in a given way interact with socialization experiences of children to produce the familiar usual pattern of male dominance. This chapter proposes to …
Agate Fossil Beds
United States National Park Service: Publications
What was life like in North America 21 million years ago? Agate Fossil Beds provides a glimpse of that time, long before the arrival of man, when now-extinct creatures roamed the land which we know today as Nebraska. Part 1 of this handbook introduces you to the park; Part 2 brings life to the fossil specimens and examines the area's geological and ecological evidence; and Part 3 presents concise guide and reference information.
Causality, Determinism, And The Mind-Brain Problem, Jeffrey C. Schank
Causality, Determinism, And The Mind-Brain Problem, Jeffrey C. Schank
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
The problem of causality, determinism, and mind and brain are discussed, and new solutions are offered. To begin, a pragmatic structuralism is assumed, asserting the functional equivalence of mind and brain activity. A problem-solving model of mind-brain activity is defined, employing the mathematical theory of probablistic automata. With this model it can be determined whether mind-brain activity is deterministic. This is accomplished if an adequate definition of strict causality is developed. Logical models of strict causality which define the causal relation in terms of "material implication" or "strict implication" are rejected. Causal relativity is assumed, and certain systemtheoretical assumptions are …

Computers For Word People: Review Of A Guide To Computer Applications In The Humanities By Susan Hockey And Computer Methods For Literary Research By Robert L. Oakman., David J. Nordloh
Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)
Any mention of computers among humanists is likely to arouse strong passions, but they are no longer simply the older, more absolute passions of disdain on the one hand for any diabolical plot to train a machine to do human-or, in cases of concordancing and indexing, vaguely inhuman-work, or on the other a wholehearted acceptance of electric salvation from drudgery. They are now more complex emotions: interest in dramatic possibilities but uncertainty about ways to proceed, or happy installation of computer components and processes but an expensive fear that someone, somewhere, is doing the same work better and faster and …

Postulated Late Prehistoric Human Population Movements In The Central Plains: A Critical Review, John Ludwickson
Postulated Late Prehistoric Human Population Movements In The Central Plains: A Critical Review, John Ludwickson
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
Hypotheses which concern human "migration" within and without the Central Subarea of the Great Plains during the Late Prehistoric period are examined. The popular notion that peoples from central Nebraska migrated to the Panhandle region of Texas-Oklahoma is shown to be suspect if not false. The idea that peoples inhabiting the Missouri River trench in Nebraska were slowly migrating northwesterly finds support. Finally, evidence concerning postulated migrations of ancestral Pawnee and Arikara into the Missouri trench in South Dakota is reviewed, with two hypotheses emerging.
Are Psychophysical Models Of Behavior Possible?, Marianne Shaw
Are Psychophysical Models Of Behavior Possible?, Marianne Shaw
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
In "The Correspondence Hypothesis," (Philosophical Review), Bruce Goldberg argues that the correspondence hypothesis is an illusion because "B's having the same thought as A" does not entail "B's having the same set of mental or neurophysiological properties, i.e., brain state or process, as A." If Goldberg is correct, a telling blow has been struck against the construction of information processing and psycho linguistic models created with the intention of later incorporation into neurophysiological models of brain functioning.
However, while Goldberg is correct in pointing out that two individuals can be said to have the same thought and yet …
Development Of Formal Hypothesis-Testing Ability, David Moshman
Development Of Formal Hypothesis-Testing Ability, David Moshman
Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications
It was postulated that formal operational hypothesis-testing ability includes at least three cognitive capacities: (a) implication comprehension, the ability to understand conditional relationships; (b) falsification strategy, the realization that to test a hypothesis, one must seek information that would falsify it; and(c) nonverification insight, the realization that hypotheses are not conclusively verified by supporting data. A total of 24 males in each of Grades 7, 10, and college evaluated data descriptions with respect to each of four hypothesized implication relationships and chose an experiment to test each hypothesis. Results suggested three sequences of qualitative change in hypothesis-testing ability: (a) from …
The Germans, Frederick C. Luebke
The Germans, Frederick C. Luebke
Department of History: Faculty Publications
IN 1928, MIDWAY BETWEEN the two world wars, H. L. Mencken observed that with few exceptions the leaders of the Germans in America were an undistinguished and unintelligent lot, a collection of mediocrities, most of whom had something to sell. The few national German ethnic organizations still in existence, he noted, were led by entirely unimportant men. Moreover, the leaders of German immigrant churches were nonentities, unknown to the general public. The blame for this lamentable dearth of leadership, in Mencken's view, rested upon the German Americans themselves, who displayed an unfortunate tendency to follow inferior men. As Catholics they …

A Bibliography Of Anthropology-Related Serial Publications In The University Of Nebraska Libraries, Kenneth P. Lohrentz, Ann Larson, Linda Mager
A Bibliography Of Anthropology-Related Serial Publications In The University Of Nebraska Libraries, Kenneth P. Lohrentz, Ann Larson, Linda Mager
Nebraska Anthropologist
This bibliography of anthropological serials in the University of Nebraska Libraries has been undertaken primarily for two reasons. The first follows from the incredibly diverse nature of the discipline itself, for the study of man and his origins has given rise to various methods of inquiry and interdisciplinary overlays. As Sol Tax has pointed out, the study of man appears to have no natural boundaries. It comes as little surprise, therefore, that the bibliography representing the published record of such a varied field of study should itself be extremely diffuse. Add to this natural diffusion the characteristic pattern of dispersed …
Aboriginal Exploitation Of Marine Food Resources, Alan J. Osborn
Aboriginal Exploitation Of Marine Food Resources, Alan J. Osborn
Department of Anthropology: Theses and Student Research
Anthropological interest in human exploitation of resources has increased considerably during the last decade. Archaeological and ethnological literature concerning man's utilization of the world's oceans is relatively abundant and there are now several on-going anthropological research programs, e.g., Aleutian Islands, Pacific Northwest Coast, California, Hawaii, Australia, New Zealand, Peru, Ecuador, Chile, and Southern Africa which focus primarily on maritime adaptations. The purpose of this study is threefold: (1) to suggest that anthropological assumptions regarding marine food resources and their use are inadequate; (2) to examine marine ecosystems with respect to structure and dynamics, primary productivity, ecological efficiencies, distributional and quantitative …

"Introduction" To The Great Plains: Environment And Culture, Frederick C. Luebke
Department of History: Faculty Publications
In the pages that follow I have summarized the views of certain selected scholars whose emphases seem to illustrate changing and contrasting interpretations of the interaction of environment and culture on the Great Plains. I have grouped their writings into two inclusive categories. First come those whose conceptual schemes suggest the primacy of environmental variables. I refer to these scholars, perhaps simplistically, as environmentalists, even though this term has acquired a different meaning in recent years. In the second group are several scholars, selected more arbitrarily than the first, whose writings seem to accord more importance to cultural factors. For …
