Marivaux's Jeu De L'Amour Et "De La Raison", Thomas M. Carr Jr. Jan 1984

Marivaux's Jeu De L'Amour Et "De La Raison", Thomas M. Carr Jr.

French Language and Literature Papers

At a crucial point in the third act of Le Jeu de l'amour et du hasard, Silvia declares that she requires a battle in Dorante between love and reason: "je veux un combat entre I'amour et la raison," a struggle her brother Mario suggests will be to the death. In fact, the work's entire action, not just the last act, can playfully be renamed Le Jeu de l'amour et "de la raison," and while it is possible to read Dorante's eventual proposal of marriage as the defeat of reason, In a very real sense such an evaluation must be …

Epistemology, Axiology, And Ideology In Sociology, Michael R. Hill Jan 1984

Epistemology, Axiology, And Ideology In Sociology, Michael R. Hill

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

This paper (a) presents a systems framework for conceptualizing epistemological issues in sociology, (b) links this framework to axiological responsibilities, and then (c) locates both the epistemological and axiological discussions within the patriarchal ideology and hierarchical power structure of American sociology. I t is argued that adopting an activist, emancipatory ideological position obligates social scientists to critically review their axiological commitments and epistemological premises. Major arguments are set in italics to permit a quick scan of the paper. These arguments form an epistemological position paper for the closing of the Twentieth Century.

Desire Seeking Expression: Mallarmé'S "Prose Pour Des Esseintes", Marshall C. Olds Oct 1983

Desire Seeking Expression: Mallarmé'S "Prose Pour Des Esseintes", Marshall C. Olds

French Language and Literature Papers

Over the past sixty-five years of Mallarméan criticism, few poems have come to occupy as central a place in the discussion of the poet's work as "Prose pour des Esseintes." While it is generally agreed that, beginning around 1862, the development of Mallarmé's principal conceits and images, of his syntax and his directing ideas, culminates in "Un Coup de dés," "Prose" is often held to be not only Mallarmé's most hermetic poem but also the one that deals most directly with the nature of poetic composition. Commentators have variously called it Mallarmé's ars poetica, a conviction piece, a taking stock …

Don Leon, Byron, And Homosexual Law Reform, Louis Crompton Jul 1983

Don Leon, Byron, And Homosexual Law Reform, Louis Crompton

Department of English: Faculty Publications

The origin of the anonymous poem entitled Don Leon, written in the 1830s but known to us only in an edition of 1866, is one of the mysteries of English literary history. The title page describes the work as "A Poem by Lord Byron, Author of Childe Harold, Don Juan, &c., &c. and Forming Part of the Private Journal of His Lordship, Supposed to Have Been Entirely Destroyed by Thos. Moore," but it is less and more than this. Byron had died in 1824 and his memoirs were burned shortly after by a committee of friends and other interested …

General Karl N. Haushofer And Geopolitik, David P. Benorden Jul 1983

General Karl N. Haushofer And Geopolitik, David P. Benorden

Department of Geography: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The purpose of this research is to trace the mainstream of German and related geopolitical philosophy and the various aspects that influenced the philosophy from 1800 to 1945. Two themes evolved: Political Geography and Nationalism. Along with economic considerations, these themes were fused into Geopolitik by Karl Haushofer and his followers in Germany following the end of World War I.

The goal of this work is to trace Geopolitik to discover the significance of its implications, what was behind it, and what were its real objectives. Geopolitik is a German-developed "science'' based on doctrines and practices with its origins in …

Russian Wolves In Folktales And Literature Of The Plains A Question Of Origins, Paul Schach Apr 1983

Russian Wolves In Folktales And Literature Of The Plains A Question Of Origins, Paul Schach

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

F or the past several years, my research associate, Robert Buchheit, and I have collected recordings of German dialects spoken by people advanced in years who immigrated to the United States and settled in the Great Plains region decades ago. Our purpose has been to acquire aural records of folk languages, to study the linguistic transformations that have occurred in them, and to preserve permanently languages that will soon disappear. In the course of our research, we have encouraged our informants to speak freely of their personal experiences, family histories, customs, and culture. The numerous recordings that we have made …

Review Of Ceremonies Of The Pawnee. Part I, The Skiri. Part Ii, The South Bands By James R. Murie, Paul A. Olson

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

After sixty years the Smithsonian Institution has finally published James R. Murie's work on Pawnee ceremonies in a handsome set of two volumes, impeccably edited by Douglas R. Parks. Murie, part Pawnee and somewhat trained in the techniques of anthropological investigation, began serious study of his own tribe in the 1890s and completed it in 1921 shortly before his death. Through much of his career he worked with white anthropologists such as Alice Fletcher, George Grinnell, Owen Dorsey, and Clark Wissler, some of whom gave him scant credit for his assistance in their research and publications. These volumes were begun …

Textual Criticism And Composition Research, Patrick Scott Jan 1983

Textual Criticism And Composition Research, Patrick Scott

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

It's a commonplace among textual bibliographers that the questions they ask and answer apply across many different disciplines. As Fredson Bowers long ago argued, "No matter what the field of study, the basis lies in the analysis of the records in printed or in manuscript form."l Not just in high literature, but in history, philosophy, and the history of science, modern bibliographical editing is widely recognized as indispensable. Yet in bibliography's, and Professor Bowers', own traditional fiefdom, the English graduate program, one area has been almost totally neglected. Whereas twenty-five years ago, it was students of modern literature, especially the …

Credentialism As Monopoly, Class War, And Socialization Scheme: Some Historical Reflections On Modern Ways Of Determining Who Can Do A Job, Paul A. Olson Jan 1983

Credentialism As Monopoly, Class War, And Socialization Scheme: Some Historical Reflections On Modern Ways Of Determining Who Can Do A Job, Paul A. Olson

Department of English: Faculty Publications

Social theorists in earlier periods have looked at credentialing from the perspective of its service to the economic or social system as opposed to its “protection of the public interest.” Adam Smith regarded the long education and the performance tests that the guilds required as monopolistic constraints on production; Karl Marx saw the same guild system as controlled by the propertied classes and uselessly exclusionary; and Emile Durkheim, unlike both Smith and Marx, regarded the occupational group with its entrance requirements as central to the stability of modern society. The application of the principles of Smith, Marx, and Durkheim, in …

The Rhetorical Theories Of Malebranche: Persuasion Through Imitation Or Attention?, Thomas M. Carr Jr. Jan 1983

The Rhetorical Theories Of Malebranche: Persuasion Through Imitation Or Attention?, Thomas M. Carr Jr.

French Language and Literature Papers

France's most prominent philosopher of the second half of the seventeenth century is reputed to be no friend of rhetoric. Bernard Tocanne declares, "C'est chez Malebranche que se mettent en place tous les arguments mis en oeuvre par les adversaires de la rhétorique à la fin du siècle," and Peter France calls him "a philosopher who had no love for rhetoric." The basis of such judgments is the Oratorian's attacks in the Recherche de la vérité (1674) against the use of the imagination and passions in the eloquence of Tertullian, Seneca, and Montaigne. Malebranche's critique is symptomatic of the legacy …

The Relative Contribution To Meaning Of Verbal And Nonverbal Channels Of Communication: A Meta-Analysis, Jeffrey S. Philpott Jan 1983

The Relative Contribution To Meaning Of Verbal And Nonverbal Channels Of Communication: A Meta-Analysis, Jeffrey S. Philpott

Department of Communication Studies: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The current study is grounded in the psychological approaches to the mechanics of communication, somewhere between cybernetics and attribution.

The integration of information available in different channels is the focus of the present study. To what extent do people rely on the different channels of communication to assign meaning to their world? More specifically, what is the relative importance of the verbal and nonverbal channels of communication in the meaning creation process?

This question of channel reliance is of central import to the study of the role of information in social/psychological systems. If it can be assumed that meaning is …

Linguistic Competence, John Tienson Jan 1983

Linguistic Competence, John Tienson

Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies

The notion of linguistic competence as a cognitive system that produces knowledge not antecedently present in the mind of the subject, e.g., knowledge of grammatical relations in response to certain stimuli is an important contribution to philosophical understanding of linguistics, and of cognitive psychology in general. This notion has not been as well received as it should have been, in part because of certain false things that have been said about it. In particular, it has been said that a grammar of a language, conceived as a theory of linguistic competence, is an idealization, and that speakers know the …

Hispanic Women: Schooling For Conformity In Public Education, Helen A. Moore Jan 1983

Hispanic Women: Schooling For Conformity In Public Education, Helen A. Moore

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

The educational experiences of Latinas are tied to norms of an Anglocentric and androcentric school system. Based on a sample of 1,000 male and female Hispanic and Anglo elementary school students, we analyze teacher expectations for three dimensions: behavioral, social and academic achievements. Teachers do rate Hispanic females as more conforming to the behavioral norms of the school. Regression analyses indicate that higher teacher ratings are assigned to Hispanic females who combine high academic scores with low scores on behavioral conformity norms. These findings indicate that teachers reward assertiveness, leadership and action when considering future student success. The dilemmas of …

Chapter 9: Development And Learning: Complementary Or Conflicting Aims In Humanities Education?, Robert D. Narveson Oct 1982

Chapter 9: Development And Learning: Complementary Or Conflicting Aims In Humanities Education?, Robert D. Narveson

ADAPT Program: Essays

It will be clear from these sketchy examples that working out some of the implications of Piagetian theory for an educational program such as ours offers us a continuing challenge. The theory perhaps does more to console us for some of our failures as teachers than to tell us how our failures may be overcome, for if the fault is in the developmental level that our students have attained, then the fault is not in us. Our teaching, Piaget tells us, can play a role in fostering development, but only a fairly limited role. On the other hand if we …

Women's and Gender Studies Program: Information and Materials

In the last ten years 350 Women's Studies programs were established across the country. Their common aims tend to cover the following

  1. To include the achievements and expenses of women traditionally neglected in the teaching of the widest possible range of subjects from English and Philosophy to Mathematics and Biology.
  2. To integrate women's studies into the curriculum throughout the university system, what is being popularly referred to as "humanizing the current curriculum."
  3. To increase Women's Studies faculty in areas not currently represented, such as the sciences architecture, and music.
  4. To strengthen the Women's Studies program in such a way that …

The Arikara Indians And The Missouri River Trade: A Quest For Survival, Roger L. Nichols Apr 1982

The Arikara Indians And The Missouri River Trade: A Quest For Survival, Roger L. Nichols

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

By the time the United States acquired most of the Great plains through the Louisiana Purchase, many Indians of the upper Missouri River valley had encountered French, British, and Anglo-American fur traders in their homeland. Most Native Americans in that region seem to have welcomed the manufactured goods these intruders brought, but at the same time some objected to the whites' disruption of earlier trade patterns. Nearly all of the Missouri Valley tribes appear to have disliked some aspects of the fur and hide trade, and many violent incidents occurred. As a village dwelling tribe located along the Missouri River …

Review Of Anthropology On The Great Plains Edited By W. Raymond Wood And Margot Liberty, David J. Wishart

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

This useful collection of review essays issues from the 34th Plains Conference, entitled "Anthropology on the Great Plains: The State of the Art," which took place in Minneapolis in 1976. The contributors were asked to summarize the past and present achievements and the future challenges of Plains anthropological research in the four traditional sub fields of the discipline (physical anthropology, cultural anthropology, archeology, and linguistics) and in a number of specialized topics, including Indian art, music and dance, and education. In their lively introduction, the editors, Raymond Wood and Margot Liberty, express their hopes that this inventory will serve to …

From A Mathematics Of Necessity To A Mathematics Of Convention, Pieranna Garavaso Jan 1982

From A Mathematics Of Necessity To A Mathematics Of Convention, Pieranna Garavaso

Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies

In Wittgenstein's speculation the transition from the philosophical point of view expressed in the Tractatus logico-philosophicus to the later development of his thought, as it is reflected in the Philosophical investigations and On certainty, is relevant also to his conception of mathematics.

In particular, while in the Tractatus, mathematics is not given an account of its own, independent of the account which is given to logic, the Remarks on the foundations of mathematics seems to offer sufficient evidence for the belief that, in the late stage of Wittgenstein's speculation, the analysis of the foundations of mathematics received an …

Are There Mental Inferences In Direct Perceptions?, Dan D. Crawford Jan 1982

Are There Mental Inferences In Direct Perceptions?, Dan D. Crawford

Department of Philosophy: Faculty Publications

While there is virtually a consensus among contemporary philosophers of perception that some form of direct realism is true, there is less than complete agreement about whether normal, direct perceptions involve mental inferences in any sense. In taking another look at this recurrent question, my aim is twofold: first, to examine some of the arguments and evidences that have been offered in favor of inferences and to see if they can be accommodated within the direct realist framework, and second, to attempt to clarify and defend the insight of direct realism that normal perceptions are noninferential.

Field Techniques And Research Methods In Geography, Robert Stoddard Jan 1982

Field Techniques And Research Methods In Geography, Robert Stoddard

Geography Program: Faculty Publications

Inexperienced researchers seeking to solve geographic problems are often confronted with a wide choice of techniques available for acquiring data. Unfortunately, information about these techniques is scattered among various publications. This text was written, therefore, for the purpose of assembling several potential field methods into one publication. It provides aspiring researchers with the opportunity to compare alternative types of data-gathering techniques and to select those appropriate to particular research problems.

Although the emphasis is on research in human geography, the techniques presented are useful for other groups of readers such as urban planners, regional planners, sociologists, and others concerned with …

The Effect Of Flanking Context On Visual Classification: The Joint Contribution Of Interactions At Different Processing Levels, John H. Flowers, Noreen Wilcox Jan 1982

The Effect Of Flanking Context On Visual Classification: The Joint Contribution Of Interactions At Different Processing Levels, John H. Flowers, Noreen Wilcox

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Flanking characters that surround a target character may cause either facilitation of or interference with target classification, depending on experimental context. In three different experiments, the patterns of facilitative priming and interference were shown to change systematically as a function of onset asynchrony between flankers and target, illustrating differing time courses of the overlapping processes that each contributes to overall reaction time performance.

Beyond The Borderlands: Mexican Labor In The Central Plains, 1900-1930, Michael M. Smith Oct 1981

Beyond The Borderlands: Mexican Labor In The Central Plains, 1900-1930, Michael M. Smith

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

The northern and central plains states, lying well beyond the Spanish borderlands and containing no great urban metropolises, have received scant attention in published studies of Mexican migration to and Mexican labor in the United States. Although this region did not attract Mexican immigrants in large numbers, compared to California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, and Colorado and such cities as Chicago or Detroit, there was a dramatic increase in the number of Mexican immigrants to the plains states between 1900 and 1930. These persons filled a vital, yet generally ignored, role in the economic life of the region.1

Friends And Allies: The Tonkawa Indians And The Anglo-Americans, 1823-1884, Thomas W. Dunlay

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Historical models of Indian-white contact on the frontier emphasize conflict and hostility, yet historians are not unaware that whites and Indians interacted in many different ways in different regions and time periods. Even in cases of Indian-white conflict, it was not at all uncommon to find Indians fighting beside the whites against other Indians, often greatly enhancing the capabilities of the white forces. Some tribes were notable for their long-standing alliance with whites against other Indian tribes; examples include the Catawbas of South Carolina, the Pawnees of Nebraska, the Wyoming Shoshonis led by Chief Washakie, and the Crows of Montana. …
