Annual Report - 1984 Jan 1985

Annual Report - 1984

The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375

1984 was an exciting year because of the challenge of the George Eliot Statue. Since 1980 the Fellowship Council had felt we were a little in the doldrums. After the interesting years leading up to the centenary of George Eliot's death, and the thrill of finally unveiling the Westminster Abbey Memorial Stone, everything seemed very flat. With no more big anniversaries until 2019, we might be forgiven for feeling that there was nothing much to do. But then, when the centre of Nuneaton was being pedestrianised with its attractive Victorian theme, and the Borough Council suggested making a site available …

Predicting The Supreme Court's Response To The Criticism Of Psychiatric Predictions Of Dangerousness In Civil Commitment Proceedings, Laura K. Haddad Jan 1985

Predicting The Supreme Court's Response To The Criticism Of Psychiatric Predictions Of Dangerousness In Civil Commitment Proceedings, Laura K. Haddad

Nebraska Law Review

This article examines several Supreme Court decisions and surveys recent literature and caselaw to ascertain whether the Court would uphold the use of psychiatric opinions in civil commitment proceedings. It will conclude that despite the empirical evidence that questions psychiatric expertise and the potential for erroneous confinement, the Supreme Court will continue to permit psychiatrists and other mental health professionals to proffer such testimony. This article further postulates that the Court should not, and will not, restrict or limit psychiatric opinions and judgments as to dangerousness, but rather should trust the adversarial process to ferret out reliable from unreliable evidence …

Nebraska Law Review

These symposium lectures address the field of medicine, life sciences, and biotechnology that are creating some of the great contemporary challenges of science and technology, raising social, ethical, religious, and legal issues. Awesome powers of medicine that are continually expanded by developments in the life sciences have sparked growing public interest in what are now termed "bioethical" issues. The lectures cover biotechnological developments in the field of organ and tissue transplants and the responses of society and the law to these developments; artificial insemination, in vitro fertilization, embryo transfer, and surrogate motherhood; and the capacity of medicine and technology to …

G85-748 Prevention And Control Of Swine Dysentery, Gerald E. Duhamel, Alex Hogg, Barbara E. Straw Jan 1985

G85-748 Prevention And Control Of Swine Dysentery, Gerald E. Duhamel, Alex Hogg, Barbara E. Straw

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This NebGuide describes the causes and symptoms of swine dysentery and offers management recommendations and treatment procedures for its prevention and control.

Swine dysentery is a highly contagious disease of growing and finishing pigs. First described in Indiana in 1921, it has been called black scours, bloody scours, and vibrionic dysentery.

Swine dysentery causes important financial losses because of reduced feed efficiency and lower weight gain, costs of medication and additional animal care, and death. Substantial costs may result from loss of sales of breeding stock, or depopulation when necessary. Serpula (Treponema) hyodysenteriae, a spiral bacterium, is the cause …

G85-766 Retaining Ownership Of Calves Or Yearlings, Paul Q. Guyer Jan 1985

G85-766 Retaining Ownership Of Calves Or Yearlings, Paul Q. Guyer

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This NebGuide discusses the advantages and disadvantages of retaining ownership of calves or yearlings until slaughter rather than selling them to a feeder.

Retaining ownership of weanlings or yearlings through to slaughter is a management and/or marketing option that can add to the profits of the calf producer or cattle grower. It is a way of expanding and diversifying the cattle enterprise. has the potential for greater profits for the rancher or grower than for the feeder who might buy them.

The cattle feeding industry exists because it has been a profitable business over the years. These profits have been …

Introduction: Medical Science, Moral Controversy, And Legal Change, Craig M. Lawson

Nebraska Law Review

This symposium issue of the Nebraska Law Review is focused explicitly on aspects of physician authority and patient autonomy. The progress of AIDS has everywhere thrown up a myriad of difficult legal issues. These range from issues of research confidentiality to civil liability for transfusion-associated AIDS; from the rights and duties of staff health care professionals who wish to avoid contact with AIDS patients being treated at the institutions where they work, to the rights and duties of health care professionals who wish to treat AIDS patients over the objections of landlords, professional associates, and others. The courts have once …

U.S. Law And Space Technology: Land Remote Sensing, Richard Dalbello Jan 1985

U.S. Law And Space Technology: Land Remote Sensing, Richard Dalbello

Space Law Documents

The opportunity for private sector investment in space technology has increased dramatically in very recent times. The commercialization of this technology places new stresses not only on the technical skills of nations, but also on their legal and political institutions. New technologies such as remote sensing, which are inherently global in their effect, suggest the need for laws and legal institutions which have a similarly global perspective. Yet, the commercialization of space technology remains a high risk, long-term endeavor. If the private sector is to have a meaningful role in the development of this technology, such laws and regulations must …

The Diarrheal Response Of Humans To Some Classic Serotypes Of Enteropathogenic Escherichia Coli Is Dependent On A Plasmid Encoding An Enteroadhesiveness Factor, Myron M. Lavine, James P. Nataro, Helge Karch, Mary M. Baldini, James B. Kaper, Robert E. Black, Mary Lou Clements, Alison D. O'Brien

Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences

Isolates of the most common 0 serogroups of enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC) associated with infant diarrhea (designated class I) adhere to Hep-2 cells; the genes for this adhesin, termed EPEC adherence factor (EAF), are located on plasmids 50-70 MDa in size. Volunteers ingested 1010 organisms of an 0127:H6 Hep-2-adhesive class I strain (E2348/69) or its plasmid-minus, nonadhesive derivative. Diarrhea occurred in nine of 10 volunteers who ingested the parent strain (mean, 1,178 ml) but in only two of nine who took the plasmid-minus variant (mean, 433 ml; P < .006). All volunteers ill from strain E2348/69 mounted serum IgA and IgG responses to a 94-kDa plasmid-associated outer membrane protein of E2348/69; this protein was found in other class I EPEC but not in enterotoxigenic or meningitic strains. The 50-70-MDa EAF plasmid seems neces- sary for full expression of pathogenicity in EPEC that exhibit Hep-2 adhesiveness. EPEC isolates of certain other, less common, 0 serogroups (044, 086, and 0114) are rarely Hep-2 adhesive. These EPEC, designated class II, possess distinct 50-70 MDa plasmids lacking EAF genes. Diarrhea was caused by 108 or 1010 organisms of an 0114:H2 class II EPEC …

Effects Of Interpersonal Problem-Solving Training With Chronic Aftercare Patients On Problem-Solving Component Skills And Effectiveness Of Solutions, David J. Hansen, Janet S. St. Lawrence, Karen A. Christoff Jan 1985

Effects Of Interpersonal Problem-Solving Training With Chronic Aftercare Patients On Problem-Solving Component Skills And Effectiveness Of Solutions, David J. Hansen, Janet S. St. Lawrence, Karen A. Christoff

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Seven chronic psychiatric patients who were enrolled in a partial-hospitalization program and had difficulty solving interpersonal problems received group skills training. A multiple-baseline design was used to demonstrate training effectiveness through improved problem solving on trained situations and through skill generalization to novel, untrained situations. Maintenance of the training was evaluated after 1 month and 4 months. Social validation was accomplished by comparing the problem-solving competency of the patient sample with skills demonstrated by “normal” nonpsychiatric persons in their community.

How Does Familiarity Affect Visual Search For Letter Strings?, John H. Flowers, Doris J. Lohr Jan 1985

How Does Familiarity Affect Visual Search For Letter Strings?, John H. Flowers, Doris J. Lohr

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Subjects visually searched for letter string targets consisting of either familiar English three-letter words (e.g., SEX) or featurally similar nonword trigrams (e.g., SFX). Distractor items were either words or nonwords and had varying degrees of feature overlap with the target among different blocks of trials. Search was facilitated by a word-nonword category distinction between target and distractors, particularly when target-noise feature overlap was high, but such facilitation consisted of slope reductions in an apparently serial, self-terminating search pattern as opposed to a "pop-out" effect.

Reminiscences: My Forty-Year Romance With Malaria, G. Robert Coatney Jan 1985

Reminiscences: My Forty-Year Romance With Malaria, G. Robert Coatney

Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies

Looking back some 55 years since beginning my graduate studies, I have come to appreciate my good fortune: (1) to have inaugurated and carried out, over a period of some 35 years, a three-pronged research program (birds, simians, and man) against the world's most important infectious disease-malaria -and during two-thirds of that time, carrying worrisome administrative responsibilities; (2) to have participated in national and international efforts towards alleviation and control of that disease; (3) to have had a remarkable group of professional and subprofessional people who shared all kinds of problems; (4) to have received full support of my scientific …

Chemical And Radiological Composition Of Air And Ground Water Near The Mineralized Uranium Ore Deposit At Crawford, Nebraska, Arthur W. Struempler Jan 1985

Chemical And Radiological Composition Of Air And Ground Water Near The Mineralized Uranium Ore Deposit At Crawford, Nebraska, Arthur W. Struempler

Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies

Data on chemical composition of ground water collected from the "post-Middle Chadron" Oligocene strata are compared with those from water of the basal Chadron hydrological unit in an area near Crawford, Nebraska, where uranium mineralization is known to occur. Uncorrected Eh values, using a calomel reference electrode, indicated water from the "post-Middle Chadron" Oligocene unit was positive, whereas water from the basal Chadron was negative. The basal Chadron waters contained lower levels of calcium and uranium and higher concentrations of sodium, chloride, sulfate, and total dissolved solids, than did waters from the "post-Middle Chadron" Oligocene zone. Radon and radium concentrations …

Overview Of Nitrate In Nebraska's Ground Water, Donald D. Adelman, Wanda J. Schroeder, Ronald J. Smaus, Gerald P. Wallin Jan 1985

Overview Of Nitrate In Nebraska's Ground Water, Donald D. Adelman, Wanda J. Schroeder, Ronald J. Smaus, Gerald P. Wallin

Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies

The primary concern over nitrate in ground water is the occurrence of a disease called methemoglobinemia in human infants who drink water containing the nitrate ion. Nitrate contaminated water leads to lack of oxygen in the blood, causing oxygen starvation of the brain and, in some severe cases, death. Infant farm animals, particularly piglets, are similarly affected by nitrate.

Two areas exist in Nebraska where nitrate contamination of ground water is becoming a serious problem. These problem areas are in Holt County and the Central Platte region. Most nitrate contamination is related to excessive application of commercial fertilizer on irrigated …
