Meet Dr. Bob!, Mary Hanson Pritchard Jan 1985

Meet Dr. Bob!, Mary Hanson Pritchard

Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies

Dr. G(eorge) Robert Coatney was known to many as "Mr. Malaria" because of the leadership he provided for the malaria research and chemotherapy programs during World War II and the Korean War. He is known to many of us affectionately as "Dr. Bob." I first met Dr. Bob early in my parasitological career when he would come to Lincoln to visit his mother and other family members. He often visited Harold W. Manter, too. Although they only brushed shoulders in 1926 as Coatney was leaving and Manter was arriving at the University of Nebraska, the two developed a firm and …

Modification Of Sand Fly Biting Behavior By Leishmania Leads To Increased Parasite Transmission, Raymond Beach, Gabriel Kjilu, Johannis Leeuwenberg Jan 1985

Modification Of Sand Fly Biting Behavior By Leishmania Leads To Increased Parasite Transmission, Raymond Beach, Gabriel Kjilu, Johannis Leeuwenberg

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Library Materials

To attempt rodent-sand fly-rodent transmission of Leishmania major, laboratory-reared Phlebotomus doboscqi were fed on L. major-infected mice and then refed on uninfected mice 21 days later. Flies which refed either probed 1–2 times and took a full blood meal in less than 10 minutes or probed 3 or more times and took little or no blood during a period of 15 minutes or more. When dissected, 7 of 8 flies which experienced difficulty in obtaining a blood meal had flagellates in their cibaria, an observation supporting the hypothesis that parasites in this part of the alimentary canal modify normal …

Potential For Development Of Tolerance By Penicillium Digitatum And Penicillium Italicum After Repeated Exposure To Potassium Sorbate, Lisa L. Schroeder, Lloyd B. Bullerman Jan 1985

Potential For Development Of Tolerance By Penicillium Digitatum And Penicillium Italicum After Repeated Exposure To Potassium Sorbate, Lisa L. Schroeder, Lloyd B. Bullerman

Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications

Two strains of Penicillium digitatum and one strain of Penicillium italicum were exposed to various levels of sorbic acid and potassium sorbate, and the MICs were determined. Selected strains of the molds were then repeatedly exposed to subinhibitory levels of the compounds to determine whether increased tolerance might develop. The MIC of sorbic acid (pH 4.75) to P. digitatum was between 0.02 and 0.025%. The MIC of sorbate (pH 5.5) to two strains of P. digitatum and P. italicum was found to be between 0.06 and 0.08%. Increasing levels of sorbate resulted in increasing growth suppression of the molds. Populations …

Sex-Specific Feeding Habits Of Brown-Headed Cowbirds In Northern Ohio In January, Richard A. Dolbeer, Cynthia R. Smith

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

We examined the stomach contents of 57 brown-headed cowbirds (Molothrus ater) collected from a roost in Erie Co., Ohio, on 12 January 1983. Corn was by far the predominant food, averaging 66% of the stomach contents by weight. Seeds from at least five grasses, but primarily Setaria spp., were the second most abundant food category, averaging 21% of the stomach contents. Ragweed {Ambrosia artemisiifolia) seeds (2.6%) were third. Male cowbirds consumed more corn than did the smaller females, whereas females consumed more of the smaller grass seeds. The abundance of corn in harvested fields and feedlots, combined with mild winter …

Cloning And Characterization Of A Gene (Fadr) Involved In Regulation Of Fatty Acid Metabolism In Escherichia Coli, Concetta C. Dirusso, William D. Nunn Jan 1985

Cloning And Characterization Of A Gene (Fadr) Involved In Regulation Of Fatty Acid Metabolism In Escherichia Coli, Concetta C. Dirusso, William D. Nunn

Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications

The regulatory gene fadR has been previously characterized by classical genetic means as a diffusible protein which exerts negative control over fatty acid degradation and acetate metabolism. fadR has also been implicated in the regulation of unsaturated fatty acid biosynthesis. To facilitate the identification of the product of the fadR gene and to study the mechanism by which this multifunctional regulatory gene exerts its control, we cloned a segment of DNA containing the fadR gene in the phage vector λL47. Subsequent subcloning of a segment of the chromosomal DNA from the λfadR+ phage into various plasmid vectors resulted in …

Sulfite Residues In Maraschino Cherries, Julie A. Nordlee, Laura B. Martin, Steve L. Taylor Jan 1985

Sulfite Residues In Maraschino Cherries, Julie A. Nordlee, Laura B. Martin, Steve L. Taylor

Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications

A survey of 53 samples of maraschino cherries from 14 different processors revealed that total sulfite residues averaged 52.3 ± 44.7 ppm. However, 58.5% of the samples had less than 40 ppm total SO2, while only 7.6% had greater than 120 ppm total SO2 indicating that the distribution was skewed in the direction of lower residue levels. Free sulfite residues in the 53 samples were considerably lower, averaging 14.2 ± 7.1 ppm. With free SO2 levels, 35.8% of the samples had less than 10 ppm free SO2, while only 5.7% had greater than 30 …

Control Of Insect Pests In Recent Mammal Collections, S. L. Williams, Hugh H. Genoways, D. A. Schlitter

University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers

A review is made of numerous insecticides to determine their suitability for use in Recent mammal collections. Factors determining their value were based on human safety, ability to protect specimens without adverse effects, and other considerations. The more favorable insecticides to use in mammal collections include Dowfume 75, sulfuryl fluoride. dimethyldiclorovinyl phosphate, paradichlorobenzene, carbon dioxide, and naphthalene. Insecticides that are considered less favor able because of many limitations included aldrin, dieldrin, arsenic, borax, mitin, ethylene oxide, methoxychlor, methyl bromide, and pyrethrum. There are some insecticides that should never be used because of extreme health and/or fire hazards. These include carbon …

Intellectual Violence, Democratic Legitimation, And The War Over The Family, Michael R. Hill Jan 1985

Intellectual Violence, Democratic Legitimation, And The War Over The Family, Michael R. Hill

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

This paper presents a view of democratically rationalized repression as a framework within which to discuss Brigitte Berger and Peter L. Berger's recent anti-feminist, bourgeois apologetic: The War over the Family: Capturing the Middle Ground. The Bergers' book is presented as an example of intellectual violence, a ruthless attempt to legitimate continuing patriarchal dominance through perverted appeals to "democracy" and democratic principles of fairness and consensus.

The Pentastomid Sebekia Mississippiensis Sp. N. In The American Alligator And Other Hosts, Robin M. Overstreet, J. Teague Self, Kent A. Vliet

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Sebekia mississippiensis sp. n. is described from Alligator mississippiensis in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Florida. Closely related to S. oxycephala in South American crocodilians, it differs by having a smaller and less spinous hook shield, a broader base for the posterior extensions of the oral cadre. and a thinner and more delicate tegument. The male reproductive system differs somewhat from that described for other pentastomids. Nymphs parasitize several fishes as well as turtles, snakes, and mammals.

The Therapeutic Justification For Withholding Medical Information: What You Don't Know Can't Hurt You, Or Can It?, Elizabeth G. Patterson Jan 1985

The Therapeutic Justification For Withholding Medical Information: What You Don't Know Can't Hurt You, Or Can It?, Elizabeth G. Patterson

Nebraska Law Review

This article examines the therapeutic justification for nondisclosure to determine whether this transfer of decision making power from the patient to the physician is justified by the potential threat to the patient's health. The primary judicial approaches to informed consent are discussed and the role of the therapeutic justification within each approach explained. The rules adopted to implement the therapeutic justification are in some instances broader than necessary in order to implement their objective. Refinements on the rules that could eliminate the overbreadth problem are noted. Regardless of such refinements, however, the validity of the therapeutic justification is questionable on …

Livestock Guarding Dogs Protect Domestic Sheep From Coyote Predation In Kansas, William F. Andelt Dec 1984

Livestock Guarding Dogs Protect Domestic Sheep From Coyote Predation In Kansas, William F. Andelt

Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings

Sheep (Ovis cries/ producers were surveyed in Kansas to determine the efficacy of livestock guarding dogs (Canis familiaris) for protecting sheep from coyote (Canis latrans) predation. The majority of producers rated their guard dogs' predator control performance as good or excellent, indicating. that the dogs reduced their reliance on other control methods and substantially reduced monetary losses.

Statistical Consulting In A Geographically Dispersed Organization, Richard M. Engeman, William E. Dusenberry

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

There has been much discussion in the recent statistical literature concerning the optimal manner for a consulting statistician to operate within a larger organization. Marquardt (1979) described the "total involvement" approach, involving a statistician from conceptualization of a project to the final report; Finney (1982) discussed the questions a statistician should ask for effective consulting; and Bishop, Peterson, and Tragser (1982) argued that a statistician's most substantive contributions are made during the planning stages of a study. McCulloch et al. (1982) described a program for training statistical consultants, and Hunter (1981) discussed the roles a statistician may assume.

Some Comments On The Concepts Of Dose And Dose Equivalent, Robert Katz, Werner Hofmann Oct 1984

Some Comments On The Concepts Of Dose And Dose Equivalent, Robert Katz, Werner Hofmann

Robert Katz Publications

Although dose is the simplest and most widely used measurement of a radiation field, it does not always lead to an unambiguous estimate of response. This is reflected in the very wide range of relative biologic effectiveness (RBE) values for biological systems. The ambiguity arises from the focus on energy deposition as the source of biological effect, whether in macroscopic or microscopic volumes. The properties of the biological detector play a role equally important to the properties of the radiation field in their interaction. To predict even the most experimentally accessible biological response, cell killing, we must know the probability …

Willa Cather's Nebraska Priests And Death Comes For The Archbishop, L. Brent Bohlke Oct 1984

Willa Cather's Nebraska Priests And Death Comes For The Archbishop, L. Brent Bohlke

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

When Willa Cather returned to the prairies of her childhood as a locale for her fiction in O Pioneers! in 1913, she returned to a number of other things as well. Among these were the religious faith and practice of her old neighbors and the importance of this faith to their lives. Cather's experience of rediscovery, struggle, and assimilation of the Christian faith is reflected throughout her Nebraska books and is particularly evident in Death Comes for the Archbishop, written after she, along with her parents, had been confirmed into the Episcopal Church at Grace Church, Red Cloud. Although …

Success In Rat Control In Kuwait, K.S. Al-Sanei, T.M. Zaghloul, A.M. Salit, M.T. Omar, M.M. Balba

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 11th (1984)

The preliminary rat survey prior to the actual attack phase of Rat Control Program in Kuwait revealed an infestation rate with the Norway rat, Rattus norveqicus, in buildings ranging between 32.7% and 70.7%. The comparatively high infestation was observed in 92.5% of Kuwait buildings. Moreover the infestation reached 99% in certain districts of the country. This high infestation was associated with an increase in rat-borne diseases particularly murine typhus, salmonellosis, rat-bite fever and certain parasitic diseases.

A programme for rodent control in Kuwait was initiated through a political decision by the cabinet which gave the full responsibility of rodent …

Hazards To Golden-Mantled Ground Squirrels And Associated Secondary Hazard Potential From Strychnine For Forest Secondary Pocket Gophers, R. Michael Anthony, Gerald D. Lindsey, James Evans

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 11th (1984)

Radio telemetry and capture-recapture techniques were used to evaluate the hazards to golden-mantled ground squirrels ( Spermophilus lateralis) from hand baiting with 0.5% strychnine-treated for western pocket gophers (Thomomys mazama) on conifer plantations in eastern Oregon. Toxicology data were collected on field-killed and caged ground squirrels and on caged mink (Mustela vison, great horned owls (Bubo virginianus), and red-tailed hawks (Buteo jamaicensis). Ground squirrel populations were reduced 50% to 75% following underground baiting for pocket gophers. Maximum amount of strychnine found in cheek pouches and carcass of a field-killed golden-mantled ground …
