“Desirous Of Improvements In Medicine": Pupils And Practitioners In The Medical Societies At Guy's And St. Bartholomews Hospitals, 1795–1815, Susan C. Lawrence
Department of History: Faculty Publications
Guy's Hospital Physical Society and St. Bartholomew's Hospital Medical and Philosophical Society served important educational and professional functions in London between 1795 and 1815. They provided the opportunity for discussing everyday problems, sharing new discoveries and encouraging pupils to exploit fully their hospital experiences. They allowed hospital men to pontificate at times, but also to support the efforts of local practitioners and ambitious students. While not improving medicine in the sense of directing research or organizing clinical investigations, they did help medical men at all levels to think about their experiences before their observations were lost in the demands of …

Lung Cancer Incidence In A Chinese High Background Area — Epidemiological Results And Theoretical Interpretation, Werner Hofmann, Robert Katz, Chunxiang Zhang
Robert Katz Publications
A survey of inhabitant exposures arising from the inhalation of radon and thoron daughters, and lung cancer mortality has been carried out in two adjacent areas in Guangdong province, China, designated as the "high background" and the "control" area. Annual exposure rates are 0.38 WLM/yr in the high background, and 0.16 WLM/yr in the control area, while age-adjusted mortality rates are 2.7 per 105 living people of all ages in the high background, and 2.9 per 105 in the control area. From this data we conclude that we are unable to determine the excess lung cancer rate over normal fluctuations …

Reduced Nocturnal Temperatures For Early Weaned Pigs, M. C. Brumm, D. P. Shelton, R. K. Johnson
Reduced Nocturnal Temperatures For Early Weaned Pigs, M. C. Brumm, D. P. Shelton, R. K. Johnson
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Three experiments of 5 wk duration were conducted to evaluate the effect of reduced nocturnal temperatures (RNT) on weaned pig performance. Treatments were 1) a control regimen (CR) of 30 C constant air temperature lowered 2 C/wk and 2) a regimen where the temperature from 1900 to 0700 h was lowered to 25 C for three nights followed by 20 C for four nights during the first week and then lowered 1 C/wk thereafter (RNT). Weaned pigs averaging 23 ± 2 d of age at the start of the experiments gained faster (P<.01) in the RNT treatment vs the CR treatment in Exp. 1, 2 and 3, respectively (.32 vs .28; .39 vs .37; .35 vs .34 kg/d). The improvement in gain was accompanied by an increase (P<.005) in feed intake for the same period (.48 vs .44; .61 vs .55;.58 vs .54 kg/d). There was no difference in feed conversion. Weaned pigs that were 1.9 to 2.3 kg lighter initially gained slower (P<.0005) compared with their heavier contemporaries (.27 vs .33; .33 vs .43 and .31 vs .33 kg/d) in Exp. 1, 2 and 3, respectively, This reduced gain was accompanied by a reduced (P<.0005) feed intake (.40 vs .51; .50 vs .66; .50 vs .62 kg/d). There was no interaction of initial weight and temperature regimen.

IN THE 18gos, following a decade of unprecedented immigration from Europe, the United States experienced a period in which national identity was greatly stressed. The term "Americanization" came into frequent usage as many citizens, privately and through various organizations, stressed conformity to the dominant culture in language, manners, and religious belief.
During these same years a similar development, in some respects stronger than in the United States, could be detected in Brazil. In 188g the empire of Brazil ended when Pedro II went into exile and Brazilian leaders introduced a republican form of government. During the preceding decade Brazil, like …

G85-758 Protective Clothing And Equipment For Pesticide Appliactors (Revised September 2002), Larry D. Schulze, Clyde Ogg
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Pesticides are valuable pest management tools, and like any tool, they must be used carefully and responsibly. Minimizing exposure is an important first step toward reducing your risk of pesticide poisoning. The use of personal protective equipment (PPE) provides benefits to the applicator and is a visual expression of appropriate and legal pesticide use.\
Use all pesticides safely. Read the pesticide product label and comply with all directions. Failure to do so may not only subject you to state and/or federal penalties, but it also may place you, your family, and the environment at a greater risk of pesticide exposure.

Protecting Intellectual Property In Space, Barbara Luxenberg
Protecting Intellectual Property In Space, Barbara Luxenberg
Space Law Documents
with the advent of the space shuttle and serious planning for a future space station, opportunities for profitable private sector activities in space are increasing. Many intellectual property protection issues--that is, issues concerning patent, copyright, and trade secret protection for the products of human creativity--will be raised by space commercialization activities. Space technology is often novel and the body of law protecting it, both nationally and internationally, is still developing. For example, developing technology for space communications raises a number of copyright issues, as does commercialization of remote sensing data. In the United States, protecting intellectual property is considered essential …
The Sky Is Falling: Managing Space Objects, William B. Wirin
The Sky Is Falling: Managing Space Objects, William B. Wirin
Space Law Documents
All countries who launch space vehicles need to focus their attention on steps necessary to prevent damage to mankind by space objects. The 1967 Outer Space Treaty outlines a nation's liability but not the prevention of such damage. Nuclear power sources (NPS), in particular, demand special procedures and precautions. This paper will discuss the reentry into the earth's atmosphere of radioactive materials (such as occurred with COSMOS 954 and COSMOS 1402), the catalogue of space objects maintained by NORAD, and measures which should be taken to avoid damage to or by space objects and debris. The space catalogue presents the …
Energy Utilization By Hereford And Simmental Males And Females, Calvin L. Ferrell, Thomas G. Jenkins
Energy Utilization By Hereford And Simmental Males And Females, Calvin L. Ferrell, Thomas G. Jenkins
Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports
Observed growth of cattle during the postweaning period reflects the genetic potential for growth as modified by the environment. Various breeds or breed crosses of cattle have been characterized for postweaning liveweight gain under ad libitum feeding conditions. Previous results showed calves by Simmental males had greater rates of postweaning gain than those sired by Hereford males. Simmental-sired steers were more efficient during a weight-constant interval, of equal efficiency during a time-constant interval and less efficient to a fat-constant end point than Hereford-sired steers. Differences among breeds in efficiencies of energy utilization for maintenance and gain have been reported. Similarly, …

Salmonid Whirling Disease, Ken Wolf, Maria E. Markiw
Salmonid Whirling Disease, Ken Wolf, Maria E. Markiw
United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications
Salmonid whirling disease-sometimes referred to as "blacktail" -is a chronic, noncontagious parasitic infection of trout and, to a lesser extent, other members of the family Salmonidae. The parasite has specific tropism for cartilage. If the infection is heavy and the fish is young, mortality sometimes results. More commonly, the parasitosis evokes abnormal swimming behavior and the transient melanism of the caudal fin and peduncle that is the blacktail sign (Fig. 1).
When the parasite is given sufficient time for development and the infection is sufficiently intense, the head and axial skeleton become disfigured in some vIictims (Fig. 2). However, the …

Rationality, Culture, And The Construction Of “Ethical Discourse”: A Comparative Perspective , Carolyn P. Edwards
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
The problem of ethical relativism has never been resolved or laid to rest. It turns out to be a complicated set of problems, involving many philosophical issues of meaning (Brandt 1954; Ladd 1957). For example, how should we define morality and ethics? How should we define the problem of ethical relativism? How does the problem of ethical relativism relate to the problem of cultural relativism?
One question that is part of this package is a scientific one and concerns whether there are even aspects of moral values and ethical discourse that can be validly abstracted from their cultural context and …
Edwardsiella Infections Of Fishes, G. L. Bullock, Roger L. Herman
Edwardsiella Infections Of Fishes, G. L. Bullock, Roger L. Herman
United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications
The genus Edwardsiella was suggested by Ewing et al. (1965) to encompass a group of enteric bacteria generally described under vernacular names such as paracolon. The type species is E. tarda, which is an opportunistic pathogen of many animals. Meyer and Bullock (1973) reported E. tarda as a pathogen of channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) and named the disease emphysematous putrefactive disease of catfish. However, the organism described by Hoshina (1962) as the fish pathogen Paracolobactrum anguillimortiferum is now recognized as being E. tarda (Wakabayashi and Egusa 1973). Hawke (1979) isolated several strains of a bacterium closely resembling …

Understanding The Drought Phenomenon: The Role Of Definitions, Donald A. Wilhite, Michael H. Glantz
National Drought Mitigation Center: Faculty Publications
The occurrence of widespread, severe drought in Africa, India, North America, China, the USSR, Australia, and western Europe has once again underscored the vulnerability of developed and developing societies to drought. The occurrence of severe drought during 1982–83 is shown in figure 1. These recent droughts have emphasized the need for more research on the causes as well as the impacts of drought and the need for additional planning to help mitigate the possible worst effects of future droughts. Drought has been the subject of a great deal of systematic study, particularly reconstructions of drought history, computations of drought frequency, …
G85-741 Estrous Synchronization For Beef Cattle, Gene H. Deutscher
G85-741 Estrous Synchronization For Beef Cattle, Gene H. Deutscher
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
This NebGuide discusses the potential benefits of estrous synchronization, how the products and programs work, and the results and costs involved. Estrous (heat) synchronization can help beef producers improve production efficiency and economic returns. Controlling estrus and ovulation in cycling females means breeding is completed in a short period of time. Instead of females being bred over a 21-day period, synchronization can shorten the breeding period to less than 5 days, depending on the program selected. The use of synchronization has great potential for improving beef production, but it requires good management for success. Producers should understand the advantages, as …

Cattle Management At U.S. Meat Animal Research Center, Margaret S. Mcalhany, W. Gordon Hays, William G. Kvasnicka
Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports
The Cattle Operations Unit is designed to function as a support area to the research scientists. The operations personnel maintain the animal populations necessary for our livestock research. Indirectly, this also involves responsible land management and herd health procedures. All the facilities and procedures employed in maintaining the extensive cattle herd are determined by research needs. Consequently, while providing a function sometimes indirectly related to research, the operations unit is necessary to provide adequate feedstuffs and healthy animals for research studies.
Weather And Climate Impacts On Beef Cattle, G. Leroy Hahn
Weather And Climate Impacts On Beef Cattle, G. Leroy Hahn
Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports
The pervasive nature of weather and climate and the difficulties in adequately predicting their impact on beef cattle often lead to inadequate management strategies and tactics, resulting in a situation of coping as the need arises. This can lead to "management by crises" rather than rational decisions. The objective of this report is to summarize some of the known responses of cattle to their thermal environment and to address ways by which adverse impacts can be reduced. The discussion is based on results from U.S. Meat Animal Research Center and other research stations.

The Interaction Of Public Legal Orders: Impacts Upon Each Other And Upon The Emerging Public Order Of Space, Harry H. Almond
The Interaction Of Public Legal Orders: Impacts Upon Each Other And Upon The Emerging Public Order Of Space, Harry H. Almond
Space Law Documents
The interaction of the public legal orders of states upon each other, and upon the emerging public legal order in outer space, and in general, has long been recognized "by civilized nations." The perspectives of this civilizing process as the perspective of law are critical, because law has always been identified as the assurance of protections it affords to peoples--or to states. This is the correct meaning of "equality before the law." It is also the reason why the concern with human rights goes to the essence of the legitimacy of any legal order. Moreover, the peoples of states, as …

Characterization Of Monoclonal Antibodies Against Shiga-Like Toxin From Escherichia Coli, Nancy A. Strockbine, Lilian R. M. Marques, Randall K. Holmes, Alison D. O'Brien
United States Public Health Resources
Three monoclonal antibodies, designated MAb 16E6, MAb 13C4, and MAb 19G8, were produced which recognize Shiga-like toxin (SLT) from Escherichia coli. All three monoclonal antibodies neutralized the cytotoxicity of E. coli SLT and were able to immunoprecipitate intact labeled toxin with Staphylococcus aureus protein A. The three antibodies were of the Gl heavy and kappa light chain classes. MAb 16E6 bound to the B subunit of SLT in Western blots and also neutralized the lethality of the toxin for mice and the enterotoxicity of the toxin in ligated rabbit ileal loops. The ability of MAb 16E6 to neutralize the …
