Chemical Quality Of The Groundwater System In Hall County, Nebraska, Jon C. Atkinson May 1973

Chemical Quality Of The Groundwater System In Hall County, Nebraska, Jon C. Atkinson

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Hall County, an area of 540 square miles, is in south-central Nebraska. The Platte River flows east-northeasterly across the county from its southwest corner; the Wood River, which is tributary to the Platte within Hall County, enters the county about 6 miles north of the southwest corner. Analysis of streamflow data indicates that the Platte and Wood Rivers are losing streams in Hall County. Based on an 18-year period, October 1953 through September 1971, the average annual losses between gaging stations were 48,100 and 1,940 acre-feet, respectively.

The county is underlain by unconsolidated deposits of Quaternary age. These deposits mantle …

The Role Of The Professional Geographer In Geographic Learning, Salvatore J. Natoli Jan 1973

The Role Of The Professional Geographer In Geographic Learning, Salvatore J. Natoli

Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies

Professional geographers have had a traditional interest and role in geographic learning. Specifically, the professional geographer referred to is the university or college professor who considers upper division teaching, graduate level teaching, and research as his primary responsibilities.

Experiences and attitudes occupy key positions in determining broader participation of professional geographers in geographic learning.

The professional geographer must view his role within a broader context .. that of the entire educational experience. In addition he must reexamine the goals of education and his roles within them rather than rest upon his scholarly credentials. He must help to provide the public …

Planning College Geography Facilities: Guidelines For Space And Equipment, Robert Stoddard

Geography Program: Faculty Publications

This publication is written as a guide for evaluating and planning the space and equipment available for geographic education in an undergraduate college. The objectives are:
(1) to present ideas about potential facilities for various kinds of geographic programs;
(2) to provide information to administrators and architects about special space and equipment needs of geography; and
(3) to serve as a guide for geographers planning new (and remodeled) facilities.
vIt is hoped that readers may gain ideas about potential facilities for geography. No "ideal" departmental plan is presented because there is no one such plan for all departments. The use …

An Analysis Of Democratic Voter-Leakage In Douglas County, Nebraska, William B. Huntington Dec 1972

An Analysis Of Democratic Voter-Leakage In Douglas County, Nebraska, William B. Huntington

Open Access Master's Theses (through 2010)

In Douglas County, Nebraska the Democratic Party controls a majority according to the registration rolls, and yet the County rarely appears in the Democratic column after all the ballots are counted. It is a majority party on paper only; the raw material for building electoral victory is present, but the finished product is seldomly realized. The natural question which comes to mind is: Where do the Democrats disappear to on election day?

This work is a case study dealing with Democratic voter-leakage; it has two objectives to fulfill: 1) the presentation of original research on Democratic voter-leakage in Douglas County, Nebraska; and …

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Staff Research Publications

This preliminary- bibliography and lake index has been prepared by the author on the basis of information available in the Office of Limnology, Hastings College, Nebraska. Although all source material available there has been searched, it is recognized that many papers, especially those published in regional languages may have been left out. Readers are requested to point out such omissions and any inaccuracies that require correction.

This preliminary bibliography will be circulated among specialists in the subject for corrections to the citations and for suggested additions to the list. It is planned that the paper will then be revised to …

Review Of Spatial Organization: The Geographer's View Of The World By Ronald Abler, John S. Adams, And Peter Gould, S. M. Bhardwaj, Robert Stoddard May 1972

Review Of Spatial Organization: The Geographer's View Of The World By Ronald Abler, John S. Adams, And Peter Gould, S. M. Bhardwaj, Robert Stoddard

Geography Program: Faculty Publications

Most introductory textbooks in geography are content-oriented, some pay lip service to basic concepts in geography, and still others are like tombstones conveying concepts and content of a bygone era. Abler, Adams and Gould have presented an introductory text that is rich in concepts, is rooted in contemporary scientific thinking, and conveys a dynamic, futuristic view of geography. The basic thrust in the book is "the circularly causal relationships between spatial structure and spatial processes." Geographers with a "lands-and-peoples" view of geography will be disappointed.

Variation And Ecology In A Local Population Of The Vesper Mouse (Nyctomys Sumichrasti), Hugh H. Genoways, J. Knox Jones Jr. Mar 1972

Variation And Ecology In A Local Population Of The Vesper Mouse (Nyctomys Sumichrasti), Hugh H. Genoways, J. Knox Jones Jr.

University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers

Vesper mice of the genus Nyctomys are relatively rare, arboreal rodents restricted to Middle America (eastern Panama to southern Mexico). Little is known concerning the biology of these secretive animals. Studies of variation of the one species, Nyctomys sumichrasti, have been limited to descriptions of new taxa (for example, see Goldman, 1916, 1937, and Laurie, 1953) and ecological observations have been confined to faunal accounts of political units (Goodwin, 1934; Hall and Dalquest, 1963) or were made coincidental to studies of other species (Lawlor, 1969; Fleming, 1970). Birkenholz and Wirtz (1965) recorded observations on the behavior, reproduction, and early …

Late Quaternary Eustatic Sea-Level Changes Along The Malibu Coast, Los Angeles County, California, Peter W. Birkeland Jan 1972

Late Quaternary Eustatic Sea-Level Changes Along The Malibu Coast, Los Angeles County, California, Peter W. Birkeland

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Late Quaternary relative sea-level changes along the Malibu coast can be deciphered by study of geomorphic features and marine and associated stream deposits. Evidence for such changes includes (a) stream downcutting in large valleys during low stands of sea level, (b) stream aggradation in the same valleys during high stands of sea level, and (c) marine shoreline angles whose altitudes coincide with the tops of valley-fill stream deposits. This evidence, and open-system uranium-series dates for shells from the Corral and Dume terrace deposits, provide a time scale for certain sea-level changes. Evidence from other …

Religio-Scientific Relationships In The Twentieth And The Thirteenth Centuries, Nicholas Dietz Jr. Jan 1972

Religio-Scientific Relationships In The Twentieth And The Thirteenth Centuries, Nicholas Dietz Jr.

Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies

Our whole planet became conscious of a religio-scientific relationship during the moon-orbiting Apollo 8 flight, at Christmas, 1968. Its astronauts were the first men to leave the gravitation of Earth, the first to come under another gravitational body, the first to travel so far from Earth (233,000 miles), the first to see the other side of the moon. Contemplation of the scientific and technical achievements of their Mission against a new background of the incredibly immense Universe and the wonders of its creation, led them to depart from flight plan to re-read to planet Earth from outer space the Genesis …

FOUNDING AND ACTIVITIES

Recently 1 have had an opportunity to examine the programs, reports and records of the Section on the History and Philosophy of Science of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences. So far no historical report on this Section has appeared, although mention should be made of the excellent "Capsule History of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences" prepared by Dr. Raymond J. Pool and distributed to the membership of the Academy at the annual banquet held on April 22, 1955. Accordingly, 1 has assembled a number of facts concerning the origin, growth, and development of the Section.

The Face Of Malone An Area Of Transition In Lincoln, Nebraska, David A. Montgomery, Frank A. Pratt, Rodney W. Schullig, Boniface N. Madubom, Darshan S. Kang

Geography Program: Faculty Publications

This report concerns Malone, a problem area of Lincoln, Nebraska, that is undergoing considerable change as a result of external influences from the city and the university. In 1971, a graduate Seminar in Urban Geography devoted a semester to the spatial aspects of blight In cities and as a part of this course prepared short reports on specific aspects of Lincoln's example of a blighted zone. The point of departure for the field work was the conceptual framework of the transition zone as it was developed by Burgess in the 1920's and refined by others at a later time, especially …

Melvin Randolph Gilmore, Incipient Cultural Ecologist: A Biographic Analysis, David L. Erickson

Open Access Master's Theses (through 2010)

This thesis will be a study in microcosm of Melvin R. Gilmore’s Nebraska research. The study analyzes his ethnobiological field work and writings in terms of biographic factors.Gilmore’s ethnobiological research manifests both bioecological and cultural ecological rationales. The thesis shows that Gilmore’s pioneering work in ethnobiology, together with studies by Harrington and others, laid the groundwork for modern cultural ecology as practiced by Julian Steward and others. The author of the thesis used original documents from the Nebraska State Historical Society in his research.

While in Nebraska Gilmore developed an interest in ethnobiology. His initial ethnobotanical field work was related …
