Where Does The Belt Belong? Examining If The Indiana Southern Baptist Convention Belongs In America's "Bible Belt", Abigail N. Fulton
Where Does The Belt Belong? Examining If The Indiana Southern Baptist Convention Belongs In America's "Bible Belt", Abigail N. Fulton
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
America is known for its Bible Belt, a region known for conservative, fundamentalist Protestantism in the southeast portion of the United States. Though this conservative culture is often associated with the south and their history of conservative politics and racial discrimination, there lies a question of if the Bible Belt is geographically limited or dependent more on culture, history, and the politics within this setting. The Indiana Southern Baptist Convention holds a highly conservative viewpoint on Christian religion, similarly to the southeast portion of the U.S., as well as a controversial history with racism and politics that is linked to …
Cultural Roots Of Eating: A Comparative Analysis Of Organic Discourse And Marketing Practices In China And The United States, Zubing (Jane) Guo
Cultural Roots Of Eating: A Comparative Analysis Of Organic Discourse And Marketing Practices In China And The United States, Zubing (Jane) Guo
Honors Theses
This thesis examines how cultural frameworks influence the development of the organic food market and shape individual attitudes towards the label “organic” in the U.S. and China. While the popularity of organic food has increased in recent years, cognitive and behavioral reactions toward the label “organic” have differed across societies. In the U.S., healthy eating discourse aligns closely with the individualistic culture and atomistic cognitive style, highlighting the importance of salient elements such as specific nutrients or chemical use. In contrast, Chinese healthy eating discourse is based on balance and harmony, which is directly related to traditional Chinese culture of …
Embodied Overcrowding And Sensory Tensions: A Carceral Autoethnography Of Philippine Jails, Dwayne Antojado
Embodied Overcrowding And Sensory Tensions: A Carceral Autoethnography Of Philippine Jails, Dwayne Antojado
Ateneo School of Government Publications
In this paper, I undertake a sensorially oriented autoethnography of two Philippine jails, illuminating the visceral textures of carceral life that conventional sociological or criminological discourses often overlook. Drawing inspiration from Jewkes and Young's (2021) examination of Kyoto Prison, I foreground the overlapping realms of sight, sound, smell, and touch, arguing that incarceration is inherently a profoundly embodied phenomenon. By weaving personal reflections, field observations, and broader scholarly insights, I reveal how overcrowded dormitories, suffocating heat, and lingering bodily odours converge to redefine detainees' spatial, temporal, and psychosocial realities in ways rarely captured by quantitative metrics. While mindful of Nelken's …

Theses and Dissertations
The growing number of Muslim students enrolled in U.S. public schools necessitates a more comprehensive understanding of their unique experiences within their educational environments. This phenomenological qualitative study investigated Muslim students' perceptions of their lived experiences in a high school in the Northern Great Plains of the United States. Six Muslim students in their junior and senior years were selected to participate in semi-structured interviews. Through the lens of Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems theory, this study aimed to deepen understanding of how Muslim students develop their sense of identity and the factors that contribute to this development. The findings revealed that …
Toward An Anthropological Ecocriticism, Grant Mcmillan
Toward An Anthropological Ecocriticism, Grant Mcmillan
Theses and Dissertations
Environmental storytelling has increasingly reckoned with concepts and assumptions about (N/a)ture inherited from the Western intellectual tradition. The late 2010s and early 2020s in particular have seen an explosion of fiction that interrogates the limits of these past ideas. Relatedly, ecocriticism of this period has entered a self-reflexive mode that has sought to deal with its own limitations while offering insights that may prove generative for a more general audience of environmentally minded readers. This project adds to ongoing ecocritical discourse by tracing a series of implicit affinities between the broad traditions of anthropology and environmental fiction through their shared …

Making Deep Neural Networks Trustworthy: Intelligibility And Safety Through Symbolic Methods, Eleanor Catherine Quint
Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
The rapid adoption of deep learning has come at the cost of properties long valued in artificial intelligence: intelligibility and safety. This dissertation develops methods that restore these properties by coupling neural networks with symbolic structure.
First, for supervised classification, I propose a differentiable decision tree integrated with a supervised variational autoencoder. The resulting model maintains competitive accuracy and generative performance while exposing clear macro-features in its latent space, improving interpretability.
Second, for reinforcement learning, I extend constrained Markov decision processes by specifying constraints in formal languages. This formal language constrained MDP enables the use of automata for state augmentation, …

This study investigates the integration of post-combustion carbon capture (PCC) technology in the power sector as a means of addressing three closely related challenges: first, …
Leveraging Disparate Wildland Fire Datasets To Address Longstanding Fire Management Questions, Kendra Fallon
Leveraging Disparate Wildland Fire Datasets To Address Longstanding Fire Management Questions, Kendra Fallon
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
While wildfire season is perceived as occurring in the warm months, and expanding, wildfire management is a year-long process. Juxtaposed to wildfire seasons are the reactive seasons of mitigating for post-fire effects, namely first-order effects of potential hydrological impacts in burn footprints, and the proactive implementation of fuels treatments to modify fire behavior to lessen the reactive workload. In this dissertation, I focus on answering lingering questions that are critical to the management of the shoulder seasons of wildfire season. To assist in resource allocation and identification of post-hydrological risks, I present a model identifying the major drivers of soil …
Interconnection Among Germanic Peoples In The Roman Late Republican And Early Imperial Eras: From Historical And Archaeological Sources, Krystian Fichat
Interconnection Among Germanic Peoples In The Roman Late Republican And Early Imperial Eras: From Historical And Archaeological Sources, Krystian Fichat
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
This thesis evaluates the cultural interactions between the Germanic peoples and neighboring societies during the Roman Late Republican and Early Imperial Eras. Roman authors traditionally portrayed the Germani as isolated barbarians and through ethnocentric and propagandistic writings, misrepresenting the Germanic people on a large scale. By combining an analysis of historical sources, such as Roman histories and ethnographies, the examination of connection through polytheistic religious practice in Western Europe and in Rome, archaeological evidence of Germanic trade and craft, and the study of settlements common to Celtic and Germanic peoples, this research demonstrates that the Germani were actively participating in …

The Plymouth Student Scientist
A mandatory target for 30% of plastic packaging to be recycled has been proposed by 2030, in order to mitigate the problem of plastic waste being incinerated or deposited in landfills. However, during the recycling process additives are added and with polypropylene being used for plastic packaging and surgical masks, these additives need to be analysed for the presence of contaminants. Examples include VOCs, PAHs, phthalates, and brominated diphenyl’s, all of which have health issues. Two samples of recycled polypropylene pellets were obtained from a national recycling company, along with a reference pellet purchased through Sigma-Aldrich. All pellets underwent ultrasound-assisted …
All Rivers Reach The Sea: Can We Improve Ocean Conservation Through Improving Public Understanding Of The Connections Between Marine And Terrestrial Systems?, Lauren Hind

Otherwise Than Human: Responsibility In The Wake Of Disaster, An Eco-Deconstructive Response To Climate Catastrophe, James W. Harris
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
This thesis will, firstly, assume a line of eco-deconstructive reasoning, which takes as its point of departure from other approaches to the environment the basic premises of deconstruction, which aim to de-center the ontological and epistemological assumptions of Western thought about the subject and language, and apply it to the concept of the human as a distinct and, most importantly, privileged being as this privilege has operated within language and culture, thereby demonstrating how climate catastrophe constitutes a fundamental rupture in traditional ontology. Secondly, I will turn towards the ethics of Emmanuel Levinas, as in present in his God, Death, …

It is grounded in the theoretical framework of Nepantla, a concept introduced by Gloria Anzaldúa to describe the unseen space of the border life as one of existing between worlds, identities, and cultures. Included and essential to this work is the Coyolxauhqui Imperative, which informs the process of …
Interpretable Alignment Of Textual Weather Reports With Local Sensor Time Series For Extreme Weather Event Visualization, Juan Luis Garza
Interpretable Alignment Of Textual Weather Reports With Local Sensor Time Series For Extreme Weather Event Visualization, Juan Luis Garza
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis presents an automated and interpretable pipeline that links natural-language weather narratives with local meteorological sensor time series. Using large language models, NOAA-style event reports are transformed into structured records capturing event type, timing, descriptive context, and uncertainty. Each extracted event is aligned with harmonized temperature, precipitation, and wind measurements from nearby weather stations, enabling systematic comparisons between narrative evidence and observed atmospheric conditions.
Across roughly fifty stations and more than two thousand events, the analyses show that discrepancies between narrative descriptions and sensor behavior arise primarily from spatial separation rather than from temporal offsets, sensor preprocessing artifacts, or …

Assessing Post-Pandemic Engagement In The Supplemental Nutrition Program For Women, Infants, And Children (Wic) In Northeast Tennessee, Christen Minnick
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Since 1974, the federal Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) has provided healthy food resources, nutrition education, and provider referrals for families at risk for poor nutrition. Public health professionals have consistently presented evidence that WIC engagement reduces premature births and infant mortality, improves child health and development, and increases specialized care access for participants. While average monthly participation in WIC has increased since the program’s inception, trends indicate that only around half of eligible families have consistently engaged with the program since 2011. Research has linked declining WIC participation to administrative burden, citing learning, psychological, compliance, …
