Nebraska Droughts A Study Of Their Past Chronological And Spatial Extent With Implications For The Future, Merlin P. Lawson, Allan Reiss, Randy Phillips, Kenneth Livingston Jan 1971

Nebraska Droughts A Study Of Their Past Chronological And Spatial Extent With Implications For The Future, Merlin P. Lawson, Allan Reiss, Randy Phillips, Kenneth Livingston

Geography Program: Faculty Publications

The purpose of this study was to measure the spatial and temporal dimensions of drought occurrence in Nebraska. Such interpretations were facilitated by the computer generation of 468 maps showing monthly values of drought in Nebraska, from 1931 through 1969. While it was found that the frequency of consecutive drought is least in the central portion of the state, the intensity of drought is greatest in this region. Maps of correspondence which relate the areal correlation between rural population density and precipitation also indicate high positive relationships for central Nebraska. Interpretation of tree ring growth values using moving t-test plots …

The Role Of Fire In Managing Red Fir Forests, Bruce M. Kilgore Jan 1971

The Role Of Fire In Managing Red Fir Forests, Bruce M. Kilgore

United States National Park Service: Publications

Fire has long been a major factor in the ecology of forests in North America (Ahlgren and Ahlgren, 1960). Its role in the red fir forest of the Sierra Nevada, however, has received little study. Investigations in mixed conifer forests in Sequoia, Kings Canyon, and Yosemite National Parks by Biswell (1961), Hartesveldt (1964), and Reynolds (1959) lead to the conclusion that fires have been less numerous during the past 50 years than they were in primitive forests. Estimates of frequency in such primitive forests range from a fire every year or two to one every 21 years (1961), with a …

Taxonomy Of The Neotoma Albigula-Group Of Woodrats In Central Mexico, E. Raymond Hall, Hugh H. Genoways Aug 1970

Taxonomy Of The Neotoma Albigula-Group Of Woodrats In Central Mexico, E. Raymond Hall, Hugh H. Genoways

University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers

Study of specimens collected from critical localities since 1944 reveals that: Neotoma montezumae and N. leucodon zacatecae are indistinguishable from earlier named taxa; N. latifrons is a subspecies of an earlier named taxon; and N. palatina, previously known from only one specimen and thought by some mammalogists to be merely an aberrant individual of Neotoma albigula, is a species distinct from N. albigula as Goldman tentatively decided when he named it 64 years ago. In the narial passage, the partition formed by the vomer that extends well behind the hard palate as a sword-like projection is present in …

Field Manual Fm 55-8, Transportation Intelligence, 12 March 1970, Robert Bolin , Depositor

United States Department of Defense Military Intelligence

Obviously, reliable information about potential enemy transportation equipment, facilities, systems, capabilities is vital, since our forces may need to prevent an enemy from using them and we may need to use them. Transportation or mobility intelligence is such reliable information. This is a very thorough document describing the collection, production, and dissemination of transportation intelligence. The emphasis of this manual is collection of relevant information in the field.

The manual describes organizations and personnel in the army responsible for collecting transportation related information. It identifies the national-level military intelligence production agencies as:

(a) The Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) which was …

Review Of Geography Of Religions By David E. Sopher, Robert Stoddard Mar 1968

Review Of Geography Of Religions By David E. Sopher, Robert Stoddard

Geography Program: Faculty Publications

This is the first book written in English dealing exclusively with the geography of religion. Consequently it contributes to the field of cultural geography by organizing some ideas and scattered publications dealing with the geography of religion into a single text. The major disappointment with this publication is the lack of consideration about several vital geographic questions. It is true that a small survey text cannot cover all aspects of the field, so some topics and previous studies may need to be omitted. Unfortunately the weakness of this book is not its size but its emphasis. Too many pages are …

Review Of Bhutan: A Physical And Cultural Geography By Pradyumna P. Karan., Robert Stoddard Mar 1968

Review Of Bhutan: A Physical And Cultural Geography By Pradyumna P. Karan., Robert Stoddard

Geography Program: Faculty Publications

This “preliminary geographical appraisal” of Bhutan is an important contribution to knowledge about an unfamiliar country. Part of the contribution results from information collected by Dr. Karan during recent expeditions. Some field data are presented in the form of new maps, including those of population distribution and important valleys. (An accompanying map with settlement features on a shaded-relief base appeared earlier as Map Supplement No. 5, A.A.G. Annals.) Also, the author's bibliography and assemblage of previously scattered materials will aid future studies of the Himalayan state.

Unfortunately the book will have limited value for many geographers. The numerous pictures, …

Problems Of Epidemiological Geography (Report Viii): Structure Of A Zoonosis Nosoareal, I.I. Yelkin, V.K. Yaschkul

Zoonotics and Wildlife Disease: Publications

The Main structural indices of a nosoareal are the focalress in the distribution of infectious diseases of man and their causative agents. The problem of the focalness of infections has been developed for quite a long time in the field of parasitology and is a very important division of contemporary epidemiology (Ye. N. Pavlovskiy, 1939, 1944, 1955, 1960, 1961, 1964; L. V. Gromashevskiy, 1941, 1949, 1965; I. I. Yelkin, 1951, 1960, 1962; P. A. Petrishcheva, 1955, 1959, 1965; V. N. Beklemishev, 1956, 1959, 1961; Yu. Some Ecological Observations On The Fathead Minnow, Pimephales Promelas, In The Alkaline Waters Of Nebraska, D. B. Mccarraher, Robert Thomas

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Staff Research Publications

Populations of the fathead minnow, Pimephales promelas, were apparently common throughout the sandhills region of Nebraska, prior to the appearance of the first pioneers, for Aughey (1880) listed the species as part of the native fauna. Current data relating to the distribution (Figure 1) and gross ecology of the species throughout the sandhills, was first collected in 1954 by the authors, with continuous observances recorded since that year. The fathead minnow is a common species throughout the northern great plains and appears to reach its greatest abundance in the shallow, alkaline lakes of Nebraska. Our investigations over the past …

Water-Mineral Relations Of Quaternary Deposits In The Lower Platte River Drainage Area In Eastern Nebraska, Ivan Barnes, Ray Bentall Jan 1968

Water-Mineral Relations Of Quaternary Deposits In The Lower Platte River Drainage Area In Eastern Nebraska, Ivan Barnes, Ray Bentall

United States Geological Survey: Publications

The partial pressure of carbon dioxide (PCO2), the degree of saturation with respect to calcite (IAP/Kcalcite), the pH, and the concentrations of selected constituents in solution were determined for water from 52 wells and the Platte River. Compared to the PCO2 in the atmosphere, the average PCO2 in the ground water was many times greater and that in the river water was about twice as great. The high PCO2 in the ground water probably results from the absorption, by infiltrating precipitation, of carbon dioxide produced in the soil by respiration of plant roots …

Urban Geology—A Need And A Challenge, William J. Wayne Jan 1968

Urban Geology—A Need And A Challenge, William J. Wayne

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Urban land uses are rapidly converting open land into intensively used land. Generally, in planning those uses, a comprehensive study has included everything except an evaluation of the land in three dimensions. Geologists are eminently well equipped to supply the missing data, but they must also be aware of the needs of the urban community and the kinds of information needed by planners if they are to write reports usable by planners. Urban and environmental geology is a newly expanding field in the use of geologic data to help solve some urban problems in the planning stage. It is likely …

Business in Nebraska

Agriculture in Nebraska (E. S. Wallace)

In the decade from 1954 to 1964 in Nebraska the number of farms dropped more than a fifth and their average size grew by more than a fourth; the total value of farm land and buildings and the value per acre rose by more than 50%, and the value per farm by more than 90%; irrigated acreage increased 85%; the value of farm products sold rose more than 50%, the average sales per farm nearly doubled, and the importance of livestock relative to crops in farm income continued to increase; the exodus from the …

Panthera Atrox (Mammalia: Felidae) From Central Alaska, Frank C. Whitmore Jr., Helen L. Foster

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

A lower jaw of the large Pleistocene cat Panthera atrox (Leidy) was found on an alluvial flat near the mouth of Lost Chicken Creek, about 180 miles northeast of Fairbanks, Alaska. It was probably washed out of carbonaceous silt deposits which, in the adjacent area, have also yielded bones of Equus, Bison, Rangifer, Cervus, and Elephantidae. The Panthera jaw falls within the size range of the series from Rancho La Brea, California, and differs from Rancho La Brea specimens only in a few characteristics. P. atrox appears to have been significantly larger than extinct or …

Handbook Of Nebraska Trees: A Guide To The Native And Most Important Introduced Species (Revised 1951), Raymond J. Pool

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Nebraska is not to be classified as a forested state since less than 3 per cent of the area of the state is covered by natural timber. However our native forest trees are numerous as to different kinds and their distribution in the state is characterized by many interesting facts. The every-day life of our people is not so commonly associated with trees as is that of peoples in the more wooded states where lumbering and the wood-working industries are very important occupations because of the proximity of great forests of coniferous or broadleaved trees. The people of Nebraska use …

The Impact Of The Vicinage Requirement: An Empirical Look, Dale W. Broeder

Nebraska Law Review

This is rather an introductory sampling article drawn from data generated by what is now familiarly known as the University of Chicago Jury Project. It was a study of twenty-three consecutively tried jury trials in a federal district court in the Midwest. The author personally observed all of such trials from beginning to end. All but a few lawyers serving in them were intensively interviewed, and with the court's permission, 225 jurors participating in such cases were interviewed. There were sixteen civil cases and seven criminal cases.

Nineteenth Century American Landscapes, Jon Nelson

Sheldon Museum of Art: Catalogs and Publications

Introduction: "In the woods, we return to reason and faith. There I feel that nothing can befall me in life,-no disgrace, no calamity (leaving my eyes) , which nature cannot repair. Standing on the bare ground,-my head bathed by the blithe air, and up-lifted into infinite space,-all mean egotism vanishes. . .. I am nothing, I see all; the currents of the universal Being circulate through me. I am part or parcel of God."

These words of Ralph \Valdo Emerson from his essay On Nature express the sentiments of the early nineteenth century American landscapists, known as the Hudson …

The University’S Role In Prison Eduction, Delyte W. Morris

Nebraska Law Review

For thirteen years Southern Illinois University has had an association with the Illinois State Penitentiary at Menard, Illinois, which has been rewarding and useful for both institutions. This article deals with the educational and rehabilitational aspects of this association. First, we look briefly at the historical development of education in prison programs. Second, we outline the specific growth of educational services by Southern Illinois University at Menard and the United States Penitentiary at Marion, Illinois. Third, we examine the influences of this growth on thinking, planning, research, and applications of prison education by the university locally and, by extension of …

The Specific Status Of The Narrow-Skulled Vole (Subgenus Stenocranius Kashchenko) In North America, Robert L. Rausch

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

On morphological and zoogeographical grounds, discussed in the present paper, it is concluded that the narrow-skulled vole in North America, previously designated Microtus (Stenocranius) miurus Osgood, is conspecific with the Eurasian M. (Stenocranius) gregalis Pallas. Fourteen subspecies in Eurasia and 5 in North America are now recognized, but it is probable that the number in Eurasia will be reduced through future investigation. The Eurasian subspecies of this vole comprise two major groups, of which one occupies the tundra zone and the other occurs across central Asia below latitude 60° N; their geographic ranges are largely separate …
