Agrarian Reform In Eighteenth -Century Denmark, Lawrence J. Baack Jan 1977

Agrarian Reform In Eighteenth -Century Denmark, Lawrence J. Baack

University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)

AGRARIAN REFORM can be one of the most complex tasks of government. It has immense consequences for the social, political, and economic structure of a society and for this reason often encounters resistance from traditional elites. In addition, the interrelated questions of land, labor, capital, education, and marketing require a comprehensive response and any single element in this matrix may be ignored only at considerable risk. Finally, the institutional and psychological characteristics of rural society have often proved remarkably impervious to change, yet if government is to be sensitive to the cultural and psychological needs of the rural community it …

Propagule Dispersal Among Forest Islands In Southeastern South Dakota, J. Warren Ranney, W. Carter Johnson Jan 1977

Propagule Dispersal Among Forest Islands In Southeastern South Dakota, J. Warren Ranney, W. Carter Johnson

United States Department of Energy: Publications

The study of seed dispersal between the widely separated forest patches (forest islands) of the eastern Great Plains can contribute to understanding effects of deforestation in the more complex forest island landscapes of the eastern United States. In the East, there is growing concern that the dissection of regional forests and the creation of small forest islands surrounded by non-forest uses (e.g., agriculture) may be affecting plant species richness and developmental patterns of vegetation (Levenson 1976), as has already been noted in the tropics (Gomezpompa et al. 1972). Curtis (1956) showed that the presettlement forest area in a portion of …

Responsibility In Anthropology (A Review Of The Life And Culture Of Ecotopia By E. N. Anderson, Jr.), Prudence Sadler Jan 1977

Responsibility In Anthropology (A Review Of The Life And Culture Of Ecotopia By E. N. Anderson, Jr.), Prudence Sadler

Nebraska Anthropologist

A great deal of discussion in recent anthropological literature has been directed toward "relevance in anthropology". The issues which are confronted under the concept of relevance in anthropology would be perhaps more correctly labeled "responsibility in anthropology".

Relevance is defined as pertinence and, social applicability, in other words, the ability, to satisfy a need. The concept of responsibility encompasses this social applicability but also includes moral and rational accountability for one's conduct and obligations. Not only is it the ability to satisfy a need but the accountability for the actions taken to satisfy the need and the repercussions which follow. …

Botanical Pioneers Of The Nebraska Sandhills, Curtis Twedt, Carl Wolfe Aug 1976

Botanical Pioneers Of The Nebraska Sandhills, Curtis Twedt, Carl Wolfe

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Staff Research Publications

The Nebraska Sandhills comprise an area of about 20,000 square miles, extending from about 980 30' to 1030 . Northern and southern boundaries are parallel with the Niobrara and Platte River valleys, respectively. The Sandhills merge with the Loess Hills physiographic region at the southeast, resulting in irregular interfaces of low dunes with clay bluffs and canyons of the latter region (Elder, 1969).

Agricultural Change In An Urban Age, Richard G. Bremer Jun 1976

Agricultural Change In An Urban Age, Richard G. Bremer

University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)

AMERICAN LOCAL HISTORIES have traditionally focused upon the origins and early growth of communities while occasionally examining later periods of relative stability or renewed expansion. But many localities, particularly in rural areas, have undergone long periods of stagnation followed by decline and disintegration. These aspects of community existence have received much less attention and remain relatively unexplored. This is particularly true in the realm of agricultural history which in the United States has tended to steer away from the local history approach, especially when dealing with the dynamic changes of the twentieth century. The present volume represents a tentative effort …

The Bryas Palace Of Theophilus, Carol Bier Jan 1976

The Bryas Palace Of Theophilus, Carol Bier

Textile Research Works

According to the Continuation of the chronicles of Theophanes the Bryas palace of Theophilus (829-842) was built in imitation of an Arab palace. The present inquiry into its Islamic source offers a new interpretation of the Bryas palace within the context of Middle Byzantine secular architecture and the development of court ceremonial. ::?revious studies have concentrated upon locating Bryas in efforts to determine the extent of Islamic impact on the architecture of Byzantium. The most recent attempt, put forth by Dr. Semavi Eyice, tentatively links the unexcavated ruins at KUyUkyal!, a suburb of Istanbul, with the literary description of Bryas …

Digenea Of Fishes From Lake Nicaragua, Donald E. Watson Jan 1976

Digenea Of Fishes From Lake Nicaragua, Donald E. Watson

Investigations of the Ichthyofauna of Nicaraguan Lakes

This paper covers a collection of helminths made during the summer of 1963. The Monogenea and Cestoda of elasmobranchs are reported in a separate paper (Watson and Thorson, 1976). Most of the teleosts were obtained (many still alive) from the fish market in Granada and were caught in Lake Nicaragua. The others were taken by seine or hook and line from the lake, from Tepetate and from San Carlos.
There have been relatively few studies on Digenea from Central America and most of the work has been done on helminths of vertebrates other than fishes. Brenes (1961) catalogued the parasites …

Geography Of Lake Nicaragua, Jaime Incer Jan 1976

Geography Of Lake Nicaragua, Jaime Incer

Investigations of the Ichthyofauna of Nicaraguan Lakes

The area surrounding Lake Nicaragua is discussed from the standpoints of its history, geological setting, climate and vegetation. A physical description of the lake itself is given, including the nature of its bottom, its shoreline, its islands and volcanoes.

Ichthyology Of The Lakes Of Nicaragua: Historical Perspective, Jaime Villa Jan 1976

Ichthyology Of The Lakes Of Nicaragua: Historical Perspective, Jaime Villa

Investigations of the Ichthyofauna of Nicaraguan Lakes

Scientific study of Nicaraguan freshwater fishes did not begin until Gunther described the first species from Lake Nicaragua in 1864, but actual accounts of several interesting fishes were written as early as the sixteenth century by the first historians of the New World. These accounts ranged from hearsay to rather detailed (for their time) descriptions and first-hand observations on the form and life of some species. In some cases these observations or conclusions have been doubted for many decades but confirmed and elaborated in recent years. Therefore I believe it may be of interest to examine the early chronicles.

Derivation Of The Freshwater Fish Fauna Of Central America, George S. Myers Jan 1976

Derivation Of The Freshwater Fish Fauna Of Central America, George S. Myers

Investigations of the Ichthyofauna of Nicaraguan Lakes

The nature, composition, and evolution of Centra) American freshwater fish groups are discussed in relation to the history and derivation of the faunal elements. It is concluded that the entire area between the Isthmus of Tehuantepec and eastern Panama was and always had been devoid of primary (obligatory) freshwater fishes prior to the very late Tertiary. Instead, secondary freshwater fishes evolved in this area during the Neogene and perhaps for a longer period, the Poeciliidae having probably had a longer history within the area than the Cichlidae. In the late Tertiary a very few North American immigrants entered the area …

Geographic Distribution Of The San Juan Ichthyofauna Of Central America With Remarks On Its Origin And Ecology, William A. Bussing Jan 1976

Geographic Distribution Of The San Juan Ichthyofauna Of Central America With Remarks On Its Origin And Ecology, William A. Bussing

Investigations of the Ichthyofauna of Nicaraguan Lakes

The scientific study of fishes of the Great Lakes of Nicaragua began in 1864 with the description by Gunther of Heros labiatus (=Cichlasoma labiatum) from Lake Managua. Subsequently, Gunther reported on several other species collected in the Great Lakes by Captain J. M. Dow. Astorqui (1967) reviewed the sparse ichthyological literature dealing with Nicaraguan fishes and pointed out the paucity of recent studies. Since then Villa (1971) has produced a provisional list of the freshwater and brackish water fishes of Nicaragua and Astorqui (1972) has analyzed the ichthyofauna of the Great Lakes Basin. Riedel (1972) discussed the geological …

Some Speculations About "The Great Nicaraguan Lake", Jaime Villa Jan 1976

Some Speculations About "The Great Nicaraguan Lake", Jaime Villa

Investigations of the Ichthyofauna of Nicaraguan Lakes

The available evidence indicates that Lakes Managua and Nicaragua were broadly connected in the past, when most of the fish species invaded the "Great Nicaraguan Lake". Due to the lowering of the water level (caused perhaps by tectonic movements and/or erosion produced by the Rio San Juan), Lake Managua became separated from Lake Nicaragua in the Tipitapa area. Water movement from Lake Managua is achieved mostly by seepage through a porous dropoff which prevents the exchange of fishes between the lakes. At about the same time, if not earler, Lake Xilml also became separated. After the more or less permanent …

An Investigation Into The Use Of Artificial Habitats As A Means Of Increasing The Fishery Productivity Of The Great Lakes Complex Of Nicaragua, Terrance M. Lim, Kenneth R. Mckaye, Douglas J. Weiland

Investigations of the Ichthyofauna of Nicaraguan Lakes

Protein deficiency is a major dietary problem in Central America where protein-rich foods are scarce and costly. Fish, however, represents a rich source of animal protein that is not being utilized to a significant extent. Moreover, it is a source that could be made available to large portions of the populations of these countries if improvements of the present fishing and distribution methods were realized. Prerequisite to expansion, however, is a basic understanding of the ecosystems and their components. It is at this preliminary stage that the situation presently lies. Once this understanding has been achieved, means of maximizing production …

The Crux Of Merging Deltas: A Note On Alan Sillitoe, Robert S. Haller Jan 1975

The Crux Of Merging Deltas: A Note On Alan Sillitoe, Robert S. Haller

Department of English: Faculty Publications

First paragraph:

The English Writer Alan Sillitoe is, to most Americans, a man of two books (or movies): Saturday Night and Sunday Morning (with Albert Finney); and The Loneliness of the Long-Distance Runner (with Tom Courtenay). Indeed, most Americans do not know that he has produced a book a year since 1959 (when The Long Distance-Runner came out), including eight other novels, three books of poems, two collections of short stories, one book of travel, one play, and one children's book. They know little about his life or the progress of his career, about his international connections or his present …

The Climate Of The Great American Desert: Reconstruction Of The Climate Of Western Interior United States, 1800-1850, Merlin Paul Lawson

University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)

Historians have concluded that two conceptions of the West were held during the incipient stages of settlement of the plains region of the Western Interior (sensu latu). They have labeled these conceptions the "myth of the desert," supposedly prevalent during the first half of the nineteenth century,l and the "myth of the garden," a notion widely held during the latter decades of that century.

It has been assumed by students of the American frontier that the former-in its extreme form the concept of the Great American Desert-was derived from the notions of a few men rather than from the probable …

Alpha-Naphthylthiourea As A Conditioning Repellent For Protecting Conifer Seed, Peter C. Passof, Rex E. Marsh, Walter E. Howard

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 6th (1974)

The object of this study was to find an alternative rodent repellent to take the place of endrin when direct seeding to regenerate coniferous forests. Compounds with aversive conditioning repellent attributes were screened. Even though still falling far short of endrin, which also acts as a lethal rodenticide, alpha-naphthylthiourea (ANTU) treated seed produced about twice as many seedlings as did the untreated seed. Both the laboratory and field evaluation procedures and results are discussed. It is hoped that with more research the efficacy of ANTU as a seed protectant can be further improved. The compound is much too promising to …
