Enteric Streptococcus Durans--An Adhering Streptococcus As A Cause Of Diarrhea In Suckling Piglets?, Darrell D. Johnson
School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications
Streptococcus durans has been considered a normal part of the intestinal flora. We would contest that assumption in light of evidence from field case submissions and because of its ability to colonize intestinal mucosa and create pathologic changes in intestine of gnotobiotic pigs.

Famulus: A Personal Information System User's Manual (For Ibm System Users), Robert L. Bolin
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications
This manual explains how to use the FAMULUS program package in a computing environment where most text is input through terminals and most files are stored on disks. I adapted it from a manual prepared in 1969, and I have gotten some ideas and examples from three other manuals. The main change I made was to recommend using an interactive editor program to prepare and perfect the FAMULUS records.
The original manual described this mode of operation:
1. Preparing records on punched cards.
2. Creating a master file on tape by using the FAMULUS program called EDIT.
3. Editing records …

Mapping The Interior Plains Of Rupert's Land By The Hudson's Bay Company To 1870, Richard I. Ruggles
Mapping The Interior Plains Of Rupert's Land By The Hudson's Bay Company To 1870, Richard I. Ruggles
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
By royal charter, Charles II in 1670 granted to a small coterie of London entrepreneurs, united in a joint stock company, exclusive trading privileges in a vast territory of then unknown dimensions. The group was the "Company of Adventurers of England trading into Hudson's Bay," the Hudson's Bay Company. The territory was Rupert's Land, named for Prince Rupert, cousin of the monarch, who graciously consented to act as the first governor of the company. By charter, Rupert's Land included "all the Landes Countryes and Territoryes upon the Coastes and Confynes of the Seas" lying within Hudson Strait, that is, the …
The Prairie Mermaid Love-Tests Of Pioneer Women, Robert H. Solomon
The Prairie Mermaid Love-Tests Of Pioneer Women, Robert H. Solomon
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
In some fictional, historical, and autobiographical accounts of the lives of married women on the prairies of North America during the brief period between initial exploration and permanent settlement, there appears a rather widespread and complicated motif. In it the woman lives on an empty prairie, usually far from the edge of town; physically isolated with her husband, she is psychologically alone, too, and friendless, especially in terms of female companionship. Often her family is far away; always her husband is insensitive and unsympathetic, and, in general terms, unworthy of her devotion. Sometimes even before she is able to voice …

Conjugative Plasmid In Corynebacterium Flaccumfaciens Subsp. Oortii That Confers Resistance To Arsenite, Arsenate, And Antimony(Iii), Carol A. Hendrick, William P. Haskins, Anne K. Vidaver
Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications
Gene transfer systems for phytopathogenic corynebacteria have not been reported previously. In this paper we describe a conjugative 46-megadalton plasmid (pDG101) found in Corynebacterium flaccumfaciens subsp. oortii COIOI that mediates resistance to arsenite, arsenate, and antimony(III). Transfer of the plasmid from CO101 to four other strains from the C. flaccumfaciens group occurred between cells immobilized on nitrocellulose filters or on agar surfaces. Transconjugant strains expressed the same levels of metal resistance as the donor strain and were able to act as donor strains in subsequent matings. The physical presence of the plasmid was detected by agarose gel electrophoresis. Arsenite-sensitive derivatives …

The Beginnings Of Wheeled Transport In Western Canada, John Alwin, Barry Kaye
The Beginnings Of Wheeled Transport In Western Canada, John Alwin, Barry Kaye
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
Water transport has played a major part in the economic development of Canada. It has been claimed that a series of east-west water routes were essential to Canada's evolution as a transcontinental nation. The many connecting rivers and lakes formed the lines of least resistance through the environment, so that in most regions of Canada, water transport was almost invariably the earliest and most important form of transport. Land transport and land routes developed more slowly and thus played a secondary role in Canada's development prior to the beginning of large-scale agricultural settlement. However, there was one region, the prairie …
Indian Maps Their Place In The History Of Plains Cartography, G. Malcolm Lewis
Indian Maps Their Place In The History Of Plains Cartography, G. Malcolm Lewis
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
References to the maps and mapping activities of North American Indians have appeared in scholarly writings for approximately two hundred years and in contemporary accounts of discovery and exploration for more than four hundred years. The topic has received relatively little attention, however, from modern scholars. In view of the recent expansion of Indian studies in both Canada and the United States, this lack may at first seem surprising. In part it reflects the fact that there are relatively few extant examples of Indian maps because Indians and most whites have tended to treat them as ephemera, not for the …

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications
A total of 23 strains of coryneform bacteria that cause ratoon stunting disease of sugarcane and Bermudagrass stunting disease were examined. These included 17 sugarcane strains from Florida, Louisiana, South Africa, Brazil, and Japan and six Bermudagrass strains from Florida and Taiwan. The sugarcane and Bermudagrass strains contained 2,4-diaminobutyric acid, rhamnose, and fucose in their cell walls, suggesting a relationship to some other phytopathogenic coryneform bacteria and related organisms with similar cell wall compositions. The cellular protein patterns of the sugarcane and Bermudagrass strains after polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis resembled the patterns of Corynebacterium michiganense subspecies more than the patterns of …
Efficacy Test Protocols For Evaluation Of Ultrasonic Rodent Repellent Devices, Stephen A. Schumake, G. Keith Lavoie, Kenneth Crane
Efficacy Test Protocols For Evaluation Of Ultrasonic Rodent Repellent Devices, Stephen A. Schumake, G. Keith Lavoie, Kenneth Crane
Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 11th (1984)
Controlled laboratory and field test protocols were developed to assess the repellent efficacies of six commercially manufactured ultrasonic rodent repellent devices. The laboratory test structure (68.7 m2) was divided into two rooms (32.5 m2 each) with a central harborage area (3.5 m2) containing a colony of 12 wild Norway rats (Rattus norvegicus). For each test, a single ultrasonic device was attached to the far end of one room and rat activity measures (oat consumption, packet damage, photocell counts) were taken during 1-week baseline and 2-1/2-week test periods. Field test structures varied in floor …
Biological Rationale For 1080 As A Predacide, Walter E. Howard, Robert H. Schmidt
Biological Rationale For 1080 As A Predacide, Walter E. Howard, Robert H. Schmidt
Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 11th (1984)
Compound 1080 (sodium monofluoroacetate) is a uniquely selective predacide for controlling coyotes, compared to other predacides. In addition to discussing the biological aspects of 1080, the reasons for the current emotional-political status of 1080 are also reviewed because the biological rationale concerning 1080 has been largely determined by a conspiracy orchestrated in 1972 by an individual of the Council on Environmental Quality but assisted by others from the U.S. Department of the Interior and the Environmental Protection Agency. Many of the distortions about 1080 can also be traced to environmental organizations which still use 1080 as an issue which they …

Gull Exclusion, George W.J. Laidlaw, Hans Blokpoel, Victor E.F. Solman, Margaret Mclaren
Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 11th (1984)
This paper reports on work carried out in a variety of sites and installations that have required active gull control. The methods used are a result of observations by a variety of researchers and attest to the effectiveness of a behavioral control technique with the use of thin steel spring wire or monofilament fishing line.
The Treatment Of Accidental Anticoagulant Toxicity In The Canine, James G. Miller
The Treatment Of Accidental Anticoagulant Toxicity In The Canine, James G. Miller
Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 11th (1984)
Anticoagulant poisoning is only one of several causes of hemorrhage in dogs. Hemophilia, von Willebrand's disease, liver diseases, and infections are cited as additional causes of hemorrhage. The duration of anticoagulant activity determines the treatment protocol. The half-life of warfarin is 19 hours; diphacinone, 30 days; brodifacoum, 180 days. The treatment of anticoagulant poisoning re-quires doses of vitamin K1, at the rate of 5 mg/kg, initially intramuscularly, then orally. Warfarin intoxication is treated for 4 days; diphacinone and brodifacoum for 30 days. Where hemorrhage is present, the prognosis is guarded, and fresh whole blood transfusions are indicated.
The Use Of Wild Carnivore Serology In Determining Patterns Of Plague Activity In Rodents In California, Charles R. Smith, Bernard C. Nelson, Allan M. Barnes
The Use Of Wild Carnivore Serology In Determining Patterns Of Plague Activity In Rodents In California, Charles R. Smith, Bernard C. Nelson, Allan M. Barnes
Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 11th (1984)
Carnivores obtain plague infection through ingestion of infected rodents or rabbits or via flea bite. Most are resistant to infection, show little or no symptoms, and produce antibodies to Yersinia pestis which may persist for several months. Consequently, carnivores can be used as serological plague sentinels using the specific passive or indirect hemagglutination test in the laboratory. A carnivore serology program for plague detection began in California in 1974. The program is a cooperative effort incorporating state and federal vector-borne disease units and state and federal predator animal control personnel. The program has proven to be an important tool in …
Aldehyde Volatiles For Use As Coyote Attractants, Jerry H. Scrivner, Walter E. Howard, Roy Teranishi
Aldehyde Volatiles For Use As Coyote Attractants, Jerry H. Scrivner, Walter E. Howard, Roy Teranishi
Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 11th (1984)
This study was designed to evaluate the attractiveness of eight aldehyde volatiles (octanal, nonanal, decanal, undecanal, dodecanal, tridecanal, tetradecanal, and hexadecanal) found in sheep liver extract and coyote (Canis latrans) estrous urine to determine their potential for use as odor attractants in predator control. The odors were presented to captive coyotes at the Hopland Field Station and the length of time coyotes responded to the odors was recorded. Octanal, nonanal, decanal, and undecanal all elicited as much sniffing and rub-rolling as did a known coyote attractant, trimethylammo-nium decanoate (TMAD). Generally male and female coyotes were equally attracted to …

Predator Management For Ducks On Waterfowl Production Areas In The Northern Plains, Alan B. Sargeant, Phillip M. Arnold
Predator Management For Ducks On Waterfowl Production Areas In The Northern Plains, Alan B. Sargeant, Phillip M. Arnold
Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 11th (1984)
In 1961, Congress initiated the Accelerated Wetland Acquisition Program, which has resulted in purchase of about 2,450 scattered small Waterfowl Production Area (WPA) management units in the Prairie Pothole Region of Minnesota, Montana, North Dakota, and South Dakota. The WPAs are administered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS); increased duck production is a major management objective. Duck recruitment rates in much of the four-state area are very low because of high predation, especially on nests. Principal predators responsible for the predation are six mammalian carnivores and one rodent. The actions of predators on WPAs, especially in central and …
Book Review: The Development Of The U.S. Urban System, Vol. 1.: Concepts, Structures, Regional Shifts; Vol. 2: Industrial Shifts, Implications By Edgar S. Dunn, Jr., Roger F. Riefler
College of Business: Faculty Publications
At least since the North-Tiebout debate of the 1950s there has been a tradition of cross-fertilization between regional science and economic history to the benefit of both fields. Although numerous landmark studies mark this symbiosis, one specific study deserves particular mention: Regions, Resources and Economic Growth by Harvey S. Perloff, Edgar S. Dunn, Jr., Eric E. Lampard, and Richard F. Muth (The Johns Hopkins Press, 1960). That book, by combining a massive data collection and refinement effort with the then emerging shift/share technique of regional science, provided a comprehensive picture and causal examination of variations in U.S. regional growth patterns …
Preweaning Survival In Swine: Heritability Of Direct And Maternal Effects, William R. Lamberson, R. K. Johnson
Preweaning Survival In Swine: Heritability Of Direct And Maternal Effects, William R. Lamberson, R. K. Johnson
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
The heritabilities of direct and maternal effects on litter survival to weaning (LS) were estimated from records of 1,243 litters of pigs from the Nebraska Gene Pool population born from 1968 to 1981. Heritabilities were estimated by: (1) weighted least-squares regressions of average survival for litters of sons on average survival for litters of their sire, (2) nested analysis of variance with LS fitted to a model including year-line and sire of litter, (3) weighted least-squares regression of average survival for the litter of daughters on the survival of the litter of their dam and (4) nested analysis of variance …
