Factors Indicating Voag/Ffa Program Quality As Perceived By Idaho Voag Instructors And Principals, Richard M. Foster, Louis E. Riensenberg

Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Faculty Publications

In public school education, as in private industry, a difference of opinion may exist between management and production about the quality of activities inherent in an occupation. The high school principals and vocational agriculture teachers in our public school systems are certainly no exception. Both have the common goal of making the vocational program within the school district the highest quality possible. In order to develop a high-quality vocational agriculture program, these two individuals must not only communicate with one another what they think are the most important and highest quality activities in which the vocational agriculture teacher should participate, …

Bobwhite Thesaurus, Thomas G. Scott

Galliformes Specialist Group and Affiliated Societies: Reports and Other Materials

The Bobwhite Thesaurus was assembled with the belief that it  would make the voluminous literature more accessible. Publications  on the bobwhite have become so numerous and have been published  in so many different places that today's bobwhite researcher is seldom able to conduct the library search required to unearth all pertinent material. This results in failure to acknowledge and use prior  findings.

An effort has been made to seek out and index all publications  issued prior to 1983 that contain information on the bobwhite. All  publications found have been included irrespective of their apparent  worth excepting anonymous papers. Publications which …

How Does Familiarity Affect Visual Search For Letter Strings?, John H. Flowers, Doris J. Lohr Jan 1985

How Does Familiarity Affect Visual Search For Letter Strings?, John H. Flowers, Doris J. Lohr

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Subjects visually searched for letter string targets consisting of either familiar English three-letter words (e.g., SEX) or featurally similar nonword trigrams (e.g., SFX). Distractor items were either words or nonwords and had varying degrees of feature overlap with the target among different blocks of trials. Search was facilitated by a word-nonword category distinction between target and distractors, particularly when target-noise feature overlap was high, but such facilitation consisted of slope reductions in an apparently serial, self-terminating search pattern as opposed to a "pop-out" effect.

Originality And Influence In George Caleb Bingham's Art, Stephen C. Behrendt Jan 1985

Originality And Influence In George Caleb Bingham's Art, Stephen C. Behrendt

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

The work of "the Missouri artist," George Caleb Bingham (1811-79), offers us a good opportunity for considering the broad subject of originality and influence in the arts. The combination of originality and convention in paintings such as Fur Traders Descending the Missouri, The Jolly Flatboatmen, and The County Election can tell us much about the dynamics of that branch of American art which sought to reconcile the inherited traditions of formal, academic European art with the often strikingly unconventional reality of a New World.

Often condescendingly labeled "regional" art because of its frequently eclectic emphasis upon the local and the …

It's The Institution That Teaches, George C. Helling, Barbara B. Helling

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

Parents' Day at St. Olaf College is like Parent's Day at any number of small colleges. School has been in session about a month. The leaves on the maples are starting to tum. In the distance, one can hear the pep band warming up for the football game, while in lounge or classroom, parents of freshmen and teachers of freshmen stand about holding coffee cups and making awkward conversation. Awkward, because they tend to talk past each other. Teachers try to keep the conversation light, offering general information about their courses. They don't know their freshmen well yet. The parents …

Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The purpose of this study was to identify program characteristics of semesterized secondary vocational agriculture/agribusiness programs which promote student involvement in supervised occupational experiences and FFA leadership activities. The design of this study utilized three data collection instruments. The first instrument was an SOEP/FFA involvement survey developed by the author. The second instrument was developed by the author and solicited SOEP and FFA program characteristics deemed necessary in a semesterized program by instructors of the cooperating schools. The third instrument, an SOEP/FFA program characteristic opinionnaire, was developed by the author as a result of the program characteristics submitted by participating …

Statistical Consulting In A Geographically Dispersed Organization, Richard M. Engeman, William E. Dusenberry Nov 1984

Statistical Consulting In A Geographically Dispersed Organization, Richard M. Engeman, William E. Dusenberry

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

There has been much discussion in the recent statistical literature concerning the optimal manner for a consulting statistician to operate within a larger organization. Marquardt (1979) described the "total involvement" approach, involving a statistician from conceptualization of a project to the final report; Finney (1982) discussed the questions a statistician should ask for effective consulting; and Bishop, Peterson, and Tragser (1982) argued that a statistician's most substantive contributions are made during the planning stages of a study. McCulloch et al. (1982) described a program for training statistical consultants, and Hunter (1981) discussed the roles a statistician may assume.

Civilian Space Stations And The U.S. Future In Space, U.S. Office Of Technology Assessment Nov 1984

Civilian Space Stations And The U.S. Future In Space, U.S. Office Of Technology Assessment

Space Law Documents

After the expenditure of some $200 billion (1984$) since the launch of its first spacecraft in early 1958, the United States has obtained the scientific knowledge and developed the technological capability and professional expertise to succeed in virtually any theoretically possible civilian space venture that it may choose to undertake, But America’s second quarter-century of space activities promises to differ markedly from the first, almost wholly exploratory, era. If space is to be successfully developed in roughly the same fashion as have other, more familiar natural resources and environments, the next stage will be characterized by establishing and securing the …

J. P. Finley: The First Severe Storms Forecaster, Joseph G. Galway Nov 1984

J. P. Finley: The First Severe Storms Forecaster, Joseph G. Galway

National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration: Technical Reports and Related Materials

During the 19th century, while others were debating about the theory and morphology of tornadoes, Finley set out to prove that tornadoes, like other weather phenomena, could be forecast. He developed forecast rules and made experimental forecasts. His forecasting and analysis activities made him the center of controversy during most of his professional life and led to open debate in the literature, but he set precedents in meteorological forecasting that are still valid today. His career as a meteorologist started while he was a private in the United States Army. His interest continued even when he had achieved the rank …

Influence Of Sample Treatment On Apparent Hydrocyanic Acid Potential Of Sorghum Leaf Tissue, Francis A. Haskins, Herman J. Gorz, R. M. Hill, J. Brakke Youngquist Nov 1984

Influence Of Sample Treatment On Apparent Hydrocyanic Acid Potential Of Sorghum Leaf Tissue, Francis A. Haskins, Herman J. Gorz, R. M. Hill, J. Brakke Youngquist

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

When dhurrin [p-hydroxy-(S)-mandelonitrile-β-D-glucoside], the cyanogenic glucoside of sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench], is hydrolyzed by autoclaving, p-hydroxybenzaldehyde (p-HB) is released. The spectrophotometric determination of p-HB concentration in autoclaved sorghum leaf extracts provides a measure of the hydrocyanic acid potential (HCN-p) of leaf tissue. Extracts of field-grown sorghum leaves contained substances that interfered with this procedure, but ether extraction effectively separated p-HB from these interfering materials. We observed that when flag leaf tissue from field-grown sorghum was dried at 75°C and then autoclaved, HCN-p values were about three times as high …

Willa Cather's Nebraska Priests And Death Comes For The Archbishop, L. Brent Bohlke Oct 1984

Willa Cather's Nebraska Priests And Death Comes For The Archbishop, L. Brent Bohlke

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

When Willa Cather returned to the prairies of her childhood as a locale for her fiction in O Pioneers! in 1913, she returned to a number of other things as well. Among these were the religious faith and practice of her old neighbors and the importance of this faith to their lives. Cather's experience of rediscovery, struggle, and assimilation of the Christian faith is reflected throughout her Nebraska books and is particularly evident in Death Comes for the Archbishop, written after she, along with her parents, had been confirmed into the Episcopal Church at Grace Church, Red Cloud. Although …

Nebraska Naturalism In Jamesian Frames, John J. Murphy Oct 1984

Nebraska Naturalism In Jamesian Frames, John J. Murphy

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

So much has been written about Willa Cather and the influence of the classics and later European literature that one sometimes forgets the American literary climate in which she developed. It was a postromantic age of realism, epitomized by William Dean Howells's attempt to limit fiction to normal characters in commonplace situations, which would make of it, as Cather complained, a "sort of young lady's illusion preserver." But the new breed of "naturalists," Cather's contemporaries, were in revolt against Howells and his more accomplished contemporary, Henry James, and advocated a return to romance without the chivalric trappings of Walter Scott …

Characteristics Of Rejection Letters And Their Effects On Job Applicants, Fredric M. Jablin, Kathleen J. Krone Oct 1984

Characteristics Of Rejection Letters And Their Effects On Job Applicants, Fredric M. Jablin, Kathleen J. Krone

Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications

This study attempted to describe the structural and content characteristics of actual employment rejection letters (following job screening interviews). Their impact on applicants’ feelings about themselves (self-concept and self-satisfaction) and about letters (perceptions of letter clarity, “personalness” and appreciative tone) are assessed. Results provide a profile of the “typical” rejection letter and indicate that while few of the letter characteristics affected applicants’ feelings about themselves, a number of these attributes were related to applicants’ perceptions of the letters.

Commingling Of Norway And Roof Rats With Native Rodents, Rex O. Baker Sep 1984

Commingling Of Norway And Roof Rats With Native Rodents, Rex O. Baker

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 11th (1984)

The ecology of plague relies on the intermixing (commingling) of animal hosts and their ectoparasites. There has been a noticeable increase in commingling of rats and ground squirrels in Southern California in recent years. This paper discusses this phenomenon in Los Angeles and Orange Counties, where it occurs, how it results from man's activities, and the ecology of varying locations. The role of fleas as vectors of plague and the intermixing of fleas between hosts are discussed. Action to reduce the incidence of commingling and the threat of plague to the urban society is addressed.

Performance Of Sodium Cyanide Ejectors, Guy Connnolly, Gary D. Simmons Sep 1984

Performance Of Sodium Cyanide Ejectors, Guy Connnolly, Gary D. Simmons

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 11th (1984)

Performance of three models of sodium cyanide (NaCN) ejectors was evaluated at Port O'Connor, Texas, early in 1982. M-44s, M-50s, and coyote getters were test-pulled and reset at 7-day or 21-day intervals for 42 days. Each pull was recorded as good if, in our judgment, it would have taken a coyote. Based on 402 to 430 test pulls of each ejector model, the percentages of good pulls were 40% for M-50s, 73% for M-44s, and 99% for coyote getters. M-44s with shortened plungers performed better than standard M-44s.

Most pulls of M-50s resulted in ejection failure due to corrosion between …

Nuisance Bats: Current Technology In Their Management And Control, Robert L. Corrigan Sep 1984

Nuisance Bats: Current Technology In Their Management And Control, Robert L. Corrigan

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 11th (1984)

Managing nuisance bat colonies can be accomplished via exclusion (bat-proofing) or in limited cases via the use of repellents. Exclusion is emphasized as the first and most desirable approach providing it is also practical. New products and devices have recently become available which may significantly aid in making exclusion programs more possible and practical. Repellents such as lights, fiberglass batting and various improvised mechanical devices may all have some utilization. Controlling nuisance bats can be accomplished via the use of toxicants and trapping, although there is considerable opposition from many bat researchers towards the use of toxicants. Toxicants that have …

Phase Lags And Pulsation Modes Of Classical Cepheids, Norman R. Simon Sep 1984

Phase Lags And Pulsation Modes Of Classical Cepheids, Norman R. Simon

Norman R. Simon Papers

The first-order phase lag between light and velocity is calculated from Fourier decompositions of the variations of 12 classical Cepheids. The phase lags have a narrow range, with maximum expansion velocity always retarded with respect to maximum light. The average value of the first-order phase lag is found to be approximately ‒0.3, close to the theoretical value obtained from the models of Simon and Davis. When the phase lag is plotted against period, two of the stars stand out. These stars are SU Cas and AZ Cen, both suspected overtone pulsators. We further investigate AZ Cen by combining the light …
