The Role Of Emotion In Moral Socialization, Richard A. Dienstbier Jan 1984

The Role Of Emotion In Moral Socialization, Richard A. Dienstbier

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

The major aim of this chapter is to discuss a research program designed to assess emotion-cognition-behavior relationships in moral decision making. While pursuing that aim, I will discuss the relationship of that research to some of the more enduring theoretical issues in emotion.

Theories of emotion wax and wane across a more extended time frame than is typical for theoretical approaches in many other areas in psychology. Perhaps these extended cycles of emotion theory result from the relative difficulty in the recent past in doing definitive research within the area of human emotion. The field was thereby insulated from sudden …

Regionalism And The Great Plains: Problems Of Concept And Method, Frederick C. Luebke Jan 1984

Regionalism And The Great Plains: Problems Of Concept And Method, Frederick C. Luebke

Department of History: Faculty Publications

American scholars have used the concept of regionalism to organize their thinking about certain aspects of national experience for many decades. Its meaning is imprecise because it has had to serve a broad spectrum of purposes. Inevitably regionalism means different things to different people; its content will vary with the purposes and standards of those using the concept. In literature, for example, a debate has been going on for a century over the merits of regionalism versus other theories ofliterary creation. Its intensity has waxed and waned with the times, but in our century regionalism in literature has achieved its …

Preface: Social And Technical Issues In Testing: Implications For Test Construction And Usage, Stephen N. Elliott, James V. Mitchell, Barbara S. Plake Jan 1984

Preface: Social And Technical Issues In Testing: Implications For Test Construction And Usage, Stephen N. Elliott, James V. Mitchell, Barbara S. Plake

Social and Technical Issues in Testing: Implications for Test Construction and Usage

Tests are constructed and used to facilitate assessment and understanding of human beings in all their multifaceted complexity. Hence, testing by its very nature is both a scientific and a social endeavor.

The interplay between testing and society has resulted in both praise and criticism from concerned citizens, psychologists, educators, and numerous other professional and consumer groups. For over 40 years, Oscar K. Buros, as Director of The Institute of Mental Measurements and Editor of the Mental Measurements Yearbooks. contributed immensely to this interplay between testing practices and societal issues. On March 19, 1978, Oscar Buros died. Luella Buros …

1. Filling The Gaps Between Test Outcomes And Usage: An Introduction, Barbara S. Plake Jan 1984

1. Filling The Gaps Between Test Outcomes And Usage: An Introduction, Barbara S. Plake

Social and Technical Issues in Testing: Implications for Test Construction and Usage

Why do we have tests? What useful purposes do they serve? How can test results be used to make decisions? How can a test be proved to provide accurate and usable information? Questions such as these have been posed recently by a concerned public who have become more aware of and concerned about testing, test quality, and appropriate test usage. Their questions are challenging, legitimate queries that can and should be addressed by members of the measurement community .

Some of the questions being asked by the public are value laden, providing topics for many thoughtful but heated debates. For …

8. Achievement Test Items: Current Issues, Robert L. Ebel

Social and Technical Issues in Testing: Implications for Test Construction and Usage

The writer of achievement test items is confronted with two major problems, as Lindquist pointed out nearly half a century ago (Lindquist, 1936, p. 17). The first of these is the problem of what to measure. The second is how to measure it. The solution proposed for the first problem is to focus primarily on testing for knowledge and only secondarily on testing for abilities. Cognitive abilities, it is reasonable to believe, depend entirely on knowledge. Although the term knowledge, as commonly used, includes both information and understanding, the most useful kind of knowledge, the kind that will occupy our …

Tarasoff, The Doctrine Of Special Relationships, And The Psychotherapist's Duty To Warn, Robert F. Schopp, Michael R. Quattrocchi Jan 1984

Tarasoff, The Doctrine Of Special Relationships, And The Psychotherapist's Duty To Warn, Robert F. Schopp, Michael R. Quattrocchi

Nebraska College of Law: Faculty Publications

The California Supreme Court, in its controversial Tarasoff decision, ruled that a psychotherapist may be found negligent when he fails to prevent his patient from harming someone.

When a therapist determines, or pursuant to the standards of his profession should determine, that his patient presents a serious danger of violence to another, he incurs an obligation to use reasonable care to protect the intended victim against such danger. The discharge of this duty may require the therapist to take one or more of various steps, depending on the nature of the case. Thus it may call for him to warn …

Improving Governmental Response To Drought: Lessons From The Mid-1970s, Donald A. Wilhite, Norman J. Rosenberg, Deborah A. Wood Jan 1984

Improving Governmental Response To Drought: Lessons From The Mid-1970s, Donald A. Wilhite, Norman J. Rosenberg, Deborah A. Wood

National Drought Mitigation Center: Faculty Publications

Government response to the mid-1970s drought in the United States is reviewed and evaluated with regard to the general “state of preparedness” and timeliness of federal and state actions. From this review it is apparent that to improve the response of government to future drought, it will be necessary to better define the role of state and federal government. Although federal government must assume responsibility for gathering and distributing general information about drought conditions, it is recommended that states must assume a greater role in collecting, analyzing, and disseminating, in a timely manner, properly packaged information about drought conditions and …

Southeast Research and Extension Center: Reports and Administration

The year 1984 has been a difficult year for the residents of southeast Nebraska. I am very proud of the faculty of Southeast Research and Extension Center stationed in out Lincoln office on the East Campus of the University of Nebraska and the 23 county cooperative extension service offices in the Southeast Extension District, who have been sensitive to the needs of the people in planning their program in extension, research and forestry programs.

Discrimination And Generalization Of Leaf Damage By Blue Jays (Cyanocitta Cristata), Pamela G. Real, Ruth Iannazzi, Alan C. Kamil, Bernd Heinrich Jan 1984

Discrimination And Generalization Of Leaf Damage By Blue Jays (Cyanocitta Cristata), Pamela G. Real, Ruth Iannazzi, Alan C. Kamil, Bernd Heinrich

Papers in Behavior in Biological Sciences

Blue jays (Cyanocitta cristata) responded to projected black-and-white silhouettes of cherry leaves that were either undamaged or were damaged by either cryptic caterpillars that disguise leaf damage due to their feeding or by noncryptic caterpillars that do not disguise leaf damage due to their feeding. Pecks to the key on which the images were projected were reinforced only if interresponse times fell within specified temporal boundaries. These boundaries were different in the presence of the two types of leaf damage. Following training with one exemplar of each damage type, the jays correctly categorized novel instances of both types. …

4. The Status Of Test Validation Research, Lyle F. Schoenfeldt Jan 1984

4. The Status Of Test Validation Research, Lyle F. Schoenfeldt

Social and Technical Issues in Testing: Implications for Test Construction and Usage

More than any other area, validation research is where the "rubber meets the road" in test construction and test usage. The very term validation implies the assessment or measurement of individuals and the relationship of this assessment to some criterion of performance. The success of a test validation effort, or the lack thereof, has implications for the value of the assessment and for the utility of the procedures.

In today's environment, whether the validation is intended for employee selection, educational decisions, or personal counseling, there is an increasing probability that the outcomes of research will have legal implications. In the …

The Role Of Recognition In Plant Disease, J. M. Daly Jan 1984

The Role Of Recognition In Plant Disease, J. M. Daly

Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications

As noted by Sequeira (110,111), the term recognition has become very popular in the literature of host-pathogen interactions over the last ten years. Despite recent facile usage, its meaning is not always clear to me. Recognition is defined by Clarke & Knox (16) as the "initial event in cell-cell communication that elicits a defined biochemical, physiological, or morphological response." This requires the not-so-easy task of defining "initial event" and "communica tion" with precise chemical or physical mechanisms. For pathologists, Se queira (110) has provided a more restricted meaning: "An early specific event that triggers a rapid, overt response by the …

The Scientific Instruments Of The Lewis And Clark Expedition, Silvio A. Bedini Jan 1984

The Scientific Instruments Of The Lewis And Clark Expedition, Silvio A. Bedini

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

The Lewis and Clark expedition, "the most consequential and romantic peace-time achievement in American history," had its genesis in the mind of Thomas Jefferson fully two decades before the exploring party departed from Pittsburgh on 31 August 1803. The need to determine the character and . expanse of the western regions of the continent lingered in his mind, and during the intervening years he encouraged three unsuccessful attempts to explore them. After he assumed the presidency in 1801, he was finally able to bring his dream to realization. The venture not only achieved all that Jefferson had hoped, but also …

To Submit Or Not To Submit—Where Is My Attorney? The Right To Counsel Before Submission To Chemical Testing In A Dwi Proceeding, Judy Moses

Nebraska Law Review

In 1982 Nebraska enacted its current DWI and implied consent statutes. This article analyzes the scope of the right to counsel afforded under the fifth and sixth amendments and the policy reasons for granting such a right in particular cases. Next, these tests and policies are applied to the accused's decision to submit to chemical analysis to determine whether such a right exists, or should exist. Finally, some of the administrative problems with affording such a right to counsel are addressed.
