European Influence On The Visual Arts Of The Great Plains An Introduction, Jon Nelson Jan 1985

European Influence On The Visual Arts Of The Great Plains An Introduction, Jon Nelson

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

From colonial times, American art has been subject to European stylistic influences, but art historians have not heretofore devoted much attention to the effect of such influences on the visual art of the Great Plains. Thus this topic seemed a fruitful theme for the 1984 annual symposium of the Center for Great Plains Studies, as was proved by the variety of proposals elicited by a call for papers. Many of the submitted papers concerned the various manifestations of Romanticism and its effects on painting in and of the region. Romanticism, an imprecise term, covers a multitude of feelings, philosophies, and …

Packaging The Great Plains The Role Of The Visual Arts, Roger B. Stein Jan 1985

Packaging The Great Plains The Role Of The Visual Arts, Roger B. Stein

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

To consider the influence of Europe upon the visual arts of the Great Plains is to engender not only a new body of information but also some complex methodological questions of concern not only to the specialist but to the student of the region more generally. How does a regional perspective focus one's investigation? How does "influence" work within a culture and how, specifically, that of Europe upon American and western culture? Finally, how do the visual arts function to shed light on these broader questions? It is the last of these questions that I will address here, not as …

Comparison Of Iterative Procedures For Solving Equations For Sire Evaluation, L. Dale Van Vleck, D. J. Dwyer Jan 1985

Comparison Of Iterative Procedures For Solving Equations For Sire Evaluation, L. Dale Van Vleck, D. J. Dwyer

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Gauss-Seidel, successive over-relaxation, end-of-round relaxation, and block iteration methods of obtaining solutions for sire effects from equations rising from progeny with records in mixed model procedures were compared. Equations transformed to provide direct solutions for genetic group plus sire effects as well as constrained and unconstrained equations were compared also. Equations for milk yield for the Northeast Artificial Insemination Sire Comparison numbered 301 for Ayrshires, 325 for Brown Swiss, 6,010 for Holsteins, and 926 for Jerseys after absorption of herd-year-season effects. Numbers of coefficients were 15 to 20% less for transformed equations, which decreased computing time per round of interation …

Sex Differences In The Recognition Of Infant Facial Expressions Of Emotion: The Primary Caretaker Hypothesis, Raymond B. Hames, Wayne A. Babchuk

Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications

Although much research has been devoted to studying sex differences In functioning (e.g., Maccoby and Jacklin 1974), most efforts have been directed toward documenting or elucidating the proximate causes of sex differences. Few attempts have been made, however, to explain the ultimate causes of these differences or the selective pressures that have led to the development or psychological differences between males and females [for exception see Symons (1979) and Daly and Wilson (1983)]. Toward this end of blending psychology with evolutionary theory we develop what we call the " primary caretaker hypothesis," which predicts that the sex that through evolutionary …

Prediction Of Transmitting Ability Of Heifers From Genetic Evaluations Of Dams When Dams And Herdmates Are Required To Have A First Record, R. A. Westell, L. Dale Van Vleck

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Estimated transmitting ability for milk production calculated from only first lactation records was regressed on milk proofs of the sire and maternal grandsire and either estimated transmitting ability of the dam calculated from only first lactations or estimated transmitting ability of the dam calculated from all lactations of a data set in which all cows were required to have milk records of first lactation. Records of 222,576 Holstein heifers in the northeastern United States were analyzed. Partial regression coefficients were similar to those from reports in which all records in the data file were used to estimate transmitting abilities. The …

U.S. Law And Space Technology: Land Remote Sensing, Richard Dalbello Jan 1985

U.S. Law And Space Technology: Land Remote Sensing, Richard Dalbello

Space Law Documents

The opportunity for private sector investment in space technology has increased dramatically in very recent times. The commercialization of this technology places new stresses not only on the technical skills of nations, but also on their legal and political institutions. New technologies such as remote sensing, which are inherently global in their effect, suggest the need for laws and legal institutions which have a similarly global perspective. Yet, the commercialization of space technology remains a high risk, long-term endeavor. If the private sector is to have a meaningful role in the development of this technology, such laws and regulations must …

Direct Tv Broadcasts Through Satellite And The Protection Of State Interests, Christo Karakashev Jan 1985

Direct Tv Broadcasts Through Satellite And The Protection Of State Interests, Christo Karakashev

Space Law Documents

Communications play a key role in the flow of information, data and ideas. They are one of the chief element of infrastructure, leading to social changes and economic development. The role of communications increased tremendously with the advent of direct TV broadcasts through satellites which are a powerful means of diffusing information, knowledge and education, as well as of recreation and fun.
An important characteristic of direct TV broadcasts is that various states can broadcast programmes to be received by anyone in the world. In other words these broadcasts do not reckon with state borders and political systems.

Extending Orientation: Telephone Contacts By Peer Advisers, John Ragle, Kathleen Krone Jan 1985

Extending Orientation: Telephone Contacts By Peer Advisers, John Ragle, Kathleen Krone

Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications

The telephone has been used for delivering a variety of services to college students. Because consumers typically initiate the telephone contact themselves, the effectiveness of these programs depends on the extent to which students are aware of the availability of services and of their own needs for assistance. First-semester freshmen may have the least adequate information about what constitutes a problem and where to go for help on campus. In 1982 the Dean of Students Office at the University of Texas at Austin conducted a pilot study of a telephone contact program in which peer advisers placed telephone calls to …

Water Separation Process, Luh C. Tao, James W. Blease Jan 1985

Water Separation Process, Luh C. Tao, James W. Blease

Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering: Faculty Publications

To reduce the amount of high quality energy utilized in removing water from a dilute ethanol solution, a two-stage process is used. The first stage removes eighty-five percent of the water using a low temperature apparatus and process and the remainder of the energy is removed by any of the other conventional processes. In the first stage, anhydrous sodium sulfate is dissolved in a dilute aqueous solution of 10 weight percent alcohol at approximately thirty degrees centrigrade. The solution is cooled to approximately twenty degrees centrigrade, at which temperature decahydrate crystals of sodium sulfate precipitate from the solution are removed. …

The Paul Sears I Know, Rufus H. Moore

Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies

A compact review of the contributions Paul B. Sears made to science should be part of the record commemorating the 60th anniversary of his presidency of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences. The recollections presented here refer to the multitude of things he has done, primarily as an ecologist. However, the overriding objective is to give a glimpse of the exceptional person his associates have come to know.

Overview Of Nitrate In Nebraska's Ground Water, Donald D. Adelman, Wanda J. Schroeder, Ronald J. Smaus, Gerald P. Wallin Jan 1985

Overview Of Nitrate In Nebraska's Ground Water, Donald D. Adelman, Wanda J. Schroeder, Ronald J. Smaus, Gerald P. Wallin

Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies

The primary concern over nitrate in ground water is the occurrence of a disease called methemoglobinemia in human infants who drink water containing the nitrate ion. Nitrate contaminated water leads to lack of oxygen in the blood, causing oxygen starvation of the brain and, in some severe cases, death. Infant farm animals, particularly piglets, are similarly affected by nitrate.

Two areas exist in Nebraska where nitrate contamination of ground water is becoming a serious problem. These problem areas are in Holt County and the Central Platte region. Most nitrate contamination is related to excessive application of commercial fertilizer on irrigated …

Meet Dr. Bob!, Mary Hanson Pritchard Jan 1985

Meet Dr. Bob!, Mary Hanson Pritchard

Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies

Dr. G(eorge) Robert Coatney was known to many as "Mr. Malaria" because of the leadership he provided for the malaria research and chemotherapy programs during World War II and the Korean War. He is known to many of us affectionately as "Dr. Bob." I first met Dr. Bob early in my parasitological career when he would come to Lincoln to visit his mother and other family members. He often visited Harold W. Manter, too. Although they only brushed shoulders in 1926 as Coatney was leaving and Manter was arriving at the University of Nebraska, the two developed a firm and …

Modification Of Sand Fly Biting Behavior By Leishmania Leads To Increased Parasite Transmission, Raymond Beach, Gabriel Kjilu, Johannis Leeuwenberg

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Library Materials

To attempt rodent-sand fly-rodent transmission of Leishmania major, laboratory-reared Phlebotomus doboscqi were fed on L. major-infected mice and then refed on uninfected mice 21 days later. Flies which refed either probed 1–2 times and took a full blood meal in less than 10 minutes or probed 3 or more times and took little or no blood during a period of 15 minutes or more. When dissected, 7 of 8 flies which experienced difficulty in obtaining a blood meal had flagellates in their cibaria, an observation supporting the hypothesis that parasites in this part of the alimentary canal modify normal …

In Situ Stress, Natural Fracture Distribution, And Borehole Elongation In The Auburn Geothermal Well, Auburn, New York, Stephen H. Hickman, John H. Healy, Mark D. Zoback Jan 1985

In Situ Stress, Natural Fracture Distribution, And Borehole Elongation In The Auburn Geothermal Well, Auburn, New York, Stephen H. Hickman, John H. Healy, Mark D. Zoback

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Hydraulic fracturing stress measurements and a borehole televiewer survey were conducted in a 1.6-km-deep well at Auburn, New York. This well, which was drilled at the outer margin of the Appalachian Fold and Thrust Belt in the Appalachian Plateau, penetrates approximately 1540 m of lower Paleozoics edimentary rocks and terminates 60 m into the Precambrian marble basement. Analysis of the hydraulic fracturing tests indicates that the minimum horizontal principal stress increases in a nearly linear fashion from 9.9 ± 0.2 MPa at 593 m to 30.6 ± 0.4 MPa at 1482 m. The magnitude of the
maximum horizontal principal stress …
