Protecting Intellectual Property In Space, Barbara Luxenberg Jan 1985

Protecting Intellectual Property In Space, Barbara Luxenberg

Space Law Documents

with the advent of the space shuttle and serious planning for a future space station, opportunities for profitable private sector activities in space are increasing. Many intellectual property protection issues--that is, issues concerning patent, copyright, and trade secret protection for the products of human creativity--will be raised by space commercialization activities. Space technology is often novel and the body of law protecting it, both nationally and internationally, is still developing. For example, developing technology for space communications raises a number of copyright issues, as does commercialization of remote sensing data. In the United States, protecting intellectual property is considered essential …

The Sky Is Falling: Managing Space Objects, William B. Wirin Jan 1985

The Sky Is Falling: Managing Space Objects, William B. Wirin

Space Law Documents

All countries who launch space vehicles need to focus their attention on steps necessary to prevent damage to mankind by space objects. The 1967 Outer Space Treaty outlines a nation's liability but not the prevention of such damage. Nuclear power sources (NPS), in particular, demand special procedures and precautions. This paper will discuss the reentry into the earth's atmosphere of radioactive materials (such as occurred with COSMOS 954 and COSMOS 1402), the catalogue of space objects maintained by NORAD, and measures which should be taken to avoid damage to or by space objects and debris. The space catalogue presents the …

The Inapplicability Of The Concept Of The "Sidney Gravel" To The Ogallala Group (Late Tertiary) In Part Of Southern Banner County, Nebraska, Robert F. Diffendal Jr. Jan 1985

The Inapplicability Of The Concept Of The "Sidney Gravel" To The Ogallala Group (Late Tertiary) In Part Of Southern Banner County, Nebraska, Robert F. Diffendal Jr.

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

A series of geologic maps of counties in western Nebraska was prepared for the Nebraska Geological Survey during the mid-1 930s. These maps showed the distribution of rock units of Tertiary age including a formation designated as the “Sidney.” The Sidney Gravel was described as a widespread sheetlike complex of channel deposits, but with small areas where it is not developed. In southern Banner County, Nebraska, there are several channels filled with sand and gravel that were mapped as Sidney in this series. Recently one of these channel fills has been observed to cut across the other. The fills are …

Edwardsiella Infections Of Fishes, G. L. Bullock, Roger L. Herman Jan 1985

Edwardsiella Infections Of Fishes, G. L. Bullock, Roger L. Herman

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

The genus Edwardsiella was suggested by Ewing et al. (1965) to encompass a group of enteric bacteria generally described under vernacular names such as paracolon. The type species is E. tarda, which is an opportunistic pathogen of many animals. Meyer and Bullock (1973) reported E. tarda as a pathogen of channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) and named the disease emphysematous putrefactive disease of catfish. However, the organism described by Hoshina (1962) as the fish pathogen Paracolobactrum anguillimortiferum is now recognized as being E. tarda (Wakabayashi and Egusa 1973). Hawke (1979) isolated several strains of a bacterium closely resembling …

Hydraulic Fracturing Stress Measurements At Yucca Mountain, Nevada, And Relationship To The Regional Stress Field, J. M. Stock, J. H. Healy, S. H. Hickman, M. D. Zoback

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Hydraulic fracturing stress measurements and acoustic borehole televiewer logs were run in holes USW G-1 and USW G-2 at Yucca Mountain as part of the Nevada Nuclear Waste Storage Investigations for the U.S. Department of Energy. Eight tests in the saturated zone, at depths from 646 to 1288 m, yielded values of the least horizontal stress Sh that are considerably lower than the vertical principal stress Sv. In tests for which the greatest horizontal principal stress SH could be determined it, was found to be less than S ν, indicating a normal faulting stress regime. …

Planning For Drought: The Role Of State Government, Donald A. Wilhite, Deborah A. Wood Jan 1985

Planning For Drought: The Role Of State Government, Donald A. Wilhite, Deborah A. Wood

National Drought Mitigation Center: Faculty Publications

Although droughts are a frequent occurrence over much of the United States, response by state and federal government has been ineffective and poorly coordinated. Recently, several states have recognized the value of drought emergency planning and have developed plans to assist them in responding more effectively to prolonged periods of water shortage. These states have created an organizational structure to coordinate the assessment and response activities of state and federal agencies. Each state’s drought response plan is unique since each state’s water supply and management problems, and their consequent impacts, are unique. The drought response plans developed by Colorado, South …

Refining The Displacement Of Culture And The Use Of Scenes And Themes In Organizational Studies, Nancy C. Morey, Fred Luthans

Department of Management: Faculty Publications

The move to displace the concept of culture traditionally used in anthropology to organizational research is discussed. Issues surrounding the culture concept and the juxtaposition of culture and organization are given special attention. Current thinking about the nature of the process of displacement is refined. Examples from an ongoing study of a city transit organization are used to demonstrate the use of cultural scenes and themes in organizational research.

Developing Formal Reasoning Through The Study Of English, Anton E. Lawson, Elmer A. Kral Jan 1985

Developing Formal Reasoning Through The Study Of English, Anton E. Lawson, Elmer A. Kral

ADAPT Program: Faculty Biographies and Links

Although hardly immune to criticism, Piaget's concept of sensorimotor, preoperational, concrete, and formal operational stages of thought has considerable face validity. In view of the accumulated Piagetian observations that critical reasoning skills develop in a generally sequential order, the finding that a substantial proportion of adolescents and adults demonstrate very little competency with formal reasoning skills poses a serious educational concern. The purpose of this article is to present ten practical teaching procedures to encourage students to develop formal reasoning skills. A 12th-grade English course will be used as an example.

Study Of Mo, Au, And Ni Implanted Molybdenum Laser Mirrors By Spectroscopic Ellipsometry, Paul G. Snyder, George H. Bu-Abbud, Jae Oh, John A. Woollam, David Poker, D. E. Aspnes, David Ingram, Peter Pronko Jan 1985

Study Of Mo, Au, And Ni Implanted Molybdenum Laser Mirrors By Spectroscopic Ellipsometry, Paul G. Snyder, George H. Bu-Abbud, Jae Oh, John A. Woollam, David Poker, D. E. Aspnes, David Ingram, Peter Pronko

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

The implantation of 150 kev molybdenum ions into polished molybdenum laser mirrors is found to increase the complex dielectric constant in the visible spectrum. Analysis using the Bruggeman effective medium approximation demonstrates that the increase is due to surface smoothing and that the surface is made nearly atomically smooth by a fluence of 5 x 1015 /cm2. Implantation of Au at 1Mev caused considerable microscopic roughening, as well as a change in the bulk optical properties. 3 MeV Ni ion implantation caused only a slight surface roughening. A thin dielectric film (probably a hydrocarbon) is found to …

The Interaction Of Public Legal Orders: Impacts Upon Each Other And Upon The Emerging Public Order Of Space, Harry H. Almond Jan 1985

The Interaction Of Public Legal Orders: Impacts Upon Each Other And Upon The Emerging Public Order Of Space, Harry H. Almond

Space Law Documents

The interaction of the public legal orders of states upon each other, and upon the emerging public legal order in outer space, and in general, has long been recognized "by civilized nations." The perspectives of this civilizing process as the perspective of law are critical, because law has always been identified as the assurance of protections it affords to peoples--or to states. This is the correct meaning of "equality before the law." It is also the reason why the concern with human rights goes to the essence of the legitimacy of any legal order. Moreover, the peoples of states, as …

Outer Space Arms Control: Existing Regime And Future Prospects, Norman A. Wulf Jan 1985

Outer Space Arms Control: Existing Regime And Future Prospects, Norman A. Wulf

Space Law Documents

The existing arms control regime for outer space bans attacks on satellites of other countries, except as acts of self-defense. The moon and other celestial bodies cannot be used for military activities. Detonating nuclear explosives in outer space is prohibited. Deployment in space of nuclear weapons or other weapons of mass destruction is prohibited. Development, testing, or deployment of space-based anti-ballistic systems or their components by the United States or the Soviet Union is prohibited.

Proposals that outer space be demilitarized or that anti-satellite weapons be banned create complex problems. Since all space activities have potential military uses, great care …

Goldberg, Donald Bartlett Doe Jan 1985

Goldberg, Donald Bartlett Doe

Sheldon Museum of Art: Catalogs and Publications

This exhibition, the second in the Resource and Response Series, assembles approximately a score of works which span nearly four decades of Michael Goldberg's career as a painter. In so doing, this exhibition also reflects upon perhaps the most fabled chapter in the history of American art: the emergence of the New York School and, with it, the creation of an "independent, self-generating, and specifically American art.'" Here, as for all shows in this series, the intent is not to rival a full retrospective, but to develop a focused response to prominent issues and concerns in the world of contemporary …

Cubism In America, Donald Bartlett Doe Jan 1985

Cubism In America, Donald Bartlett Doe

Sheldon Museum of Art: Catalogs and Publications

Synthetic Cubism not only synthesized "real" materials with painted/constructed reality, but also synthesized earlier discoveries, permitting objects to seem tangible while forms and surfaces were shuffled in space as thin as gossamer.

World War I ended the joint investigations of Picasso and Braque and dispersed the international community of artists who had gathered in Paris. Excepting Juan Gris and Ferdinand Leger, all of these artists, including the American artists, were on-lookers. Few grasped all of the issues and formal ideas with which Braque and Picasso experimented. Most seized upon an aspect of the style and wedded it to theories of …

Two Modal Action Patterns With A Continuous Temporal Distribution, Alan B. Bond, George W. Barlow, William Rogers Jan 1985

Two Modal Action Patterns With A Continuous Temporal Distribution, Alan B. Bond, George W. Barlow, William Rogers

Papers in Behavior in Biological Sciences

Most methods of quantitative analysis of animal behavior assume that action patterns can be unambiguously classified into discrete, exclusive categories. This is not invariably the case. The digging behavior of the Midas cichlid (Cichlasoma citrinellum), for example, exhibits two functionally distinct modalities, scoop and pi&, that intergrade continuously in form but are separable probabilistically. We present a technique for analyzing such behaviors that provides a reliable basis for formulating and verifying categories and allows a quantitative assessment of functional dissimilarity.

Die meisten Methoden quantitativer Verhaltensanalysen setzen eindeutige Klassifizierung der Verhaltensweisen in sich wechselseitig ausschlieißende Kategorien voraus. Die sind …

Nonsense Mutations In The Chlamydomonas Chloroplast Gene That Codes For The Large Subunit Of Ribulosebisphosphate Carboxylase/Oxygenase, Robert J. Spreitzer, Michel Goldschmidt-Clermont, Michele Rahire, Jean-David Rochiax Jan 1985

Nonsense Mutations In The Chlamydomonas Chloroplast Gene That Codes For The Large Subunit Of Ribulosebisphosphate Carboxylase/Oxygenase, Robert J. Spreitzer, Michel Goldschmidt-Clermont, Michele Rahire, Jean-David Rochiax

Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications

The Chlamydomonas reinhardtii chloroplast mutants 18-SB and 18-7G lack both the chloroplast-encoded large subunit and nuclear-encoded small subunit of the chloroplast enzyme ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (EC 4.1.1.39). A chloroplast intergenic-suppression model has been postulated to account for the genetic instability of 18-5B revertants. Here, we have determined the molecular basis of the 18-SB and 18-7G mutants. They contain nonsense mutations close to the 3' and 5' ends of their large-subunit genes, respectively. Puls-chase experiments revealed that the 18-SB mutant produces a truncated large subunit that is unstable. In connection with previous experiments, this work identifies nonsense suppression in the chloroplast. Small …

George Eliot's Theory Of The Novel, Richard Freadman Jan 1985

George Eliot's Theory Of The Novel, Richard Freadman

The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375

By the time George Eliot began work on Scenes of Clerical Life late in 1856, she already had in mind a pretty clear idea of what a novel ought to be. Here her work for the Westminster Review and the Leader had been of great assistance, for it had enabled her to assess many contemporary novels as well as numerous works of historical, sociological, philosophical and topical interest. The 'theory' of the novel that resulted was not as comprehensive or integrated as the historic one formalised in Henry James's Prefaces fifty years later, and it clearly underwent alteration as George …

Book Review: The Clarendon Edition Of The Novels Of George Eliot (Clarendon Press, Oxford, 1984), Richard Freadman Jan 1985

Book Review: The Clarendon Edition Of The Novels Of George Eliot (Clarendon Press, Oxford, 1984), Richard Freadman

The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375

In writing Daniel Deronda George Eliot hoped 'to rouse the imagination of men and women to a vision of human claims in those races of their fellow-men who most differ from them in customs and beliefs' . Typically, her aspiration was suffused with doubt. She wished the novel to be seen as an integrated work of art but worried about its aesthetic reception; and she feared that the' Jewish element' would elicit an unenthusiastic response. On both counts her apprehensiveness has been proven prophetic. Daniel Deronda remains one of the most controversial of the great English novels, its extraordinary fusion …

In The Rear And Limping A Little: Some Reflections On Medicine, Biotechnology, And The Law: The Roscoe Pound Lectures, Zelman Cowen

Nebraska Law Review

These symposium lectures address the field of medicine, life sciences, and biotechnology that are creating some of the great contemporary challenges of science and technology, raising social, ethical, religious, and legal issues. Awesome powers of medicine that are continually expanded by developments in the life sciences have sparked growing public interest in what are now termed "bioethical" issues. The lectures cover biotechnological developments in the field of organ and tissue transplants and the responses of society and the law to these developments; artificial insemination, in vitro fertilization, embryo transfer, and surrogate motherhood; and the capacity of medicine and technology to …

Small Groups In Large Classes, Wendy Holmes Jan 1985

Small Groups In Large Classes, Wendy Holmes

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

The fact that "mass lecture" is almost synonymous with "mass class" in academic circles suggests that the only thing an instructor can do with large classes is talk to (or at) them. After some desultory attempts at general discussions, question and answer sessions, and optional discussions for interested students, that is exactly what I settled into in "Introduction to Art," a class in art appreciation which I teach to roughly two hundred students every semester. I clarified and refined my lectures. I distributed mimeographed sheets bearing artists' names and dates and the main points of each lecture. I showed slides …
