Alternative Animal Models With Maternal Effects And Foster Dams, L. Dale Van Vleck
Alternative Animal Models With Maternal Effects And Foster Dams, L. Dale Van Vleck
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Effects of foster dams can be included in genetic evaluations using animal models with maternal effects in several ways. The alternatives discussed involve minor changes in computing strategies from strategies used with reduced animal models that predict breeding values for direct and maternal effects. The easiest alternative is to assign foster dams to groups by breed and time period and add equations for fixed effects of breed-period. Random and, assumed, independent effects of foster dams can be nested in breed-period groups. If foster dams do not repeat. then those effects can be absorbed into equations for other fixed effects, additive …

Regional Climate Centers: New Institutions For Climate Service And Climate- Impact Research, Stanley A. Changnon, Peter J. Lamb, Kenneth G. Hubbard
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
In response to the need climate services at the local, state, and regional levels, a national network of regional climate centers has developed. This provides the background to this development, and outlines the functions of the centers and identifies their benefits and beneficiaries. The centers are a source of climate expertise and maintain multifaceted interfaces with the public and private sectors. Each center a) performs services, including the management of the basic data for its region and the delivery of specialized products; b) conducts applied climate studies, including the monitoring of anomalous conditions and the promotin of regional research; and …

Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Materials and History
According to Naisbett and Aburdene (Reinventing the Corporation, 1985) it will be the management of human resources rather than management of economic resources that will determine-the margin of success for organizations in the future. In addition, the recently (1988) published report from Stanford Research Institute (SRI) International, called "New Seeds for Nebraska," indicated that skilled and adaptable human resources are a major area where action is needed to give Nebraska the competitive advantage in tomorrow's economy. The report encouraged the University of Nebraska to be more proactive in developing the human resource capital available in the state. The Center for …

Self-Study Report: 03 Strategic Plans
Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Materials and History
Much time and effort have gone into the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources (IANR) and the Department of Agricultural Education's strategic planning effort. Coincidentally, the Department had started its own process of strategic planning in the summer of 1987 where it identified the four departmental "thrust" areas.
The IANR process was started in the fall of 1987 by the Vice Chancellor Omtvedt of the Institute and was to be followed by a series of meetings, not only within the Institute, but with town hall meetings around Nebraska, to ensure a broad representation of input regarding future directions of IANR. …

Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Materials and History
The five year Comprehensive Department Review provides the Department with a special opportunity to do two things -- to look back on accomplishments of the past five years since our last review, and to look ahead toward the goals, the challenges and the opportunities in the years ahead.
The Department of Agricultural Education took bold steps at a staff retreat in Aurora, Nebraska in the summer of 1987, to establish departmental priorities or program "thrusts." Little did we realize at the time that we were taking steps that would soon be followed by all units within the Institute of Agriculture …

Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Materials and History
Agriculture and agribusiness are Nebraska's dominant industries. Ninety-six percent (47.1 million acres) of the state's land area is occupied by 55,000 farms and ranches. Over one-half of the states workers depend upon agriculture and business for their livelihood. The average growing season ranges from 170 days in southeast Nebraska to 120 days in the northwest. Underneath Nebraska is stored nearly 2 billion acre-feet of water, and in Nebraska we receive an average of 90 million acre-feed of precipitation yearly.
Approximately 17 million acres are utilized as cropland, of which approximately 8 million are irrigated. Corn, soybeans, winter wheat, and sorghum …

Access To Space: The Future Of U.S. Space Transportation Systems, U.S. Congress, Office Of Technology Assessment
Space Law Documents
The United States today possesses a capable fleet of cargo and crew-carrying launch systems, managed by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, the Department of Defense, and the private sector. Emerging technologies offer the promise, by the turn of the century, of new launch systems that may reduce cost while increasing performance, reliability, and operability~__···· . Continued exploration and exploitation of space will depend on a fleet of versatile and reliable launch vehicles. Yet, uncertainty about the nature of U.S. space program goals and the schedule for achieving them, as well as the stubbornly high cost of space transportation, makes …
Plant Morphology And Herbivory: Review Of M.J.A. Werger Et Al., Eds., Plant Form And Vegetation Structure: Adaptation, Plasticity And Relation To Herbivory, Svata M. Louda
Svata M. Louda Publications
This edited volume contains 26 contributed papers presented at the International Symposium on Vegetation Structure in Utrecht 14-18 July 1987. The editors organize the papers into three broadly related areas: (1) morphological plasticity of plant growth form in response to environmental variation, (2) morphological and ecological aspects of dry matter partitioning, and (3) herbivory in plant growth and plant community structure. All of the papers take a functional view of plant growth form and vegetation architectural structure, to one extent or another. The papers are uneven; stated objectives, scope of the subject matter covered, and degree of conceptualization vary substantially …
