Radiosensitivity Parameters For Cell Survival In Tradescantia And For Chromosome Aberrations In Chinese Hamster Cells, Robert Katz, G. Huang Sep 1990

Radiosensitivity Parameters For Cell Survival In Tradescantia And For Chromosome Aberrations In Chinese Hamster Cells, Robert Katz, G. Huang

Robert Katz Publications

Data for the loss of reproductive integrity of Tradescantia stamen hairs irradiated with 250 keV X rays and 0.43 and 5.6 MeV neutrons are fitted with radiosensitivity parameters from track theory, with E0 and m from X-ray data while σ0 and κ are then found from neutron irradiations. The X-ray data display a clear shoulder with 100% survival below 0.18 Gy and a “linear tail.” Data for abnormal metaphases and chromatid exchanges in Chinese Hamster cells have also been fitted with parameters. Parameters for abnormal metaphases are nearly identical with those obtained years ago for cell killing from …

Characterizing Digital Image Acquisition Devices, Stephen E. Reichenbach, Stephen K. Park, Ramkumar Narayanswamy Aug 1990

Characterizing Digital Image Acquisition Devices, Stephen E. Reichenbach, Stephen K. Park, Ramkumar Narayanswamy

School of Computing: Faculty Publications

Despite the popularity of digital imaging devices (e.g., CCD array cameras) the problem of accurately characterizing the spatial frequency response of such systems has been largely neglected in the literature. This paper describes a simple method for accurately estimating the optical transfer function of digital image acquisition devices. The method is based on the traditional knife-edge technique but explicitly deals with fundamental sampled system considerations: insufficient and anisotropic sampling. Results for both simulated and real imaging systems demonstrate the accuracy of the method.

Nebraska Adolescents' Hiv/Aids Attitudes, Knowledge And Related Practices: 1989, Ian Newman, Joe Lutjeharms, Joanne Owens-Nauslar, Autumn Koch

Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications

This Prevention Center Paper (No. 22) describes the HIV/AIDS related knowledge, attitudes and practices of a random sample of 1240 Nebraska adolescents in grades 9-12. The data were gathered in 1989.
Data were gathered by staff of Health Education, Inc., a Nebraska-based nonprofit research and development corporation, as part of a contract with the Nebraska Department of Education. The Nebraska Department of Education has a major HIV /AIDS cooperative agreement with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.
Schools were selected at random from each of the six classifications of Nebraska schools established by the Nebraska Department …

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

Improvement of the taxonomy of the genus Xanthomonas and especially of Xanthomonas campestris, which is subdivided into more than 125 pathovars, is discussed. Recent contributions to the taxonomy of Xanthomonas are reviewed, and on the basis of these data and unpublished data from several laboratories, the usefulness of different phenotypic, chemotaxonomic, and genotypic techniques is discussed. The heterogeneity of several X. campestris pathovars has been demonstrated by sodium dodecyl sulfate electrophoresis of whole-cell proteins and fatty acid fingerprinting. The host selectivity of the pathovars is not correlated with their relationships as revealed by DNA-DNA hybridization experiments. In order to …

No Card Cat—No Problem! : Wln’S Lasercat Provides Another Opportunity For Cooperation, Gail Z. Eckwright, Mary K. Bolin

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications

This article discusses the implementation of WLN’s Laser-Cat CD-ROM catalog in a medium-sized academic li brary. It describes the creation of a LaserCat/Information desk in the library lobby and the use of technical services librarians and paraprofessional staff from technical services and elsewhere in the library to staff the desk.

In large libraries, public and technical services functions have generally been quite distinct. In small libraries, on the other hand, every librarian and staff member has had to be a generalist, and there may not be the possibility of maintaining a strict division between the traditional functions, even if that …

Heterogeneous Within-Herd Variance. 1. Genetic Parameters For First And Second Lactation Milk Yields Of Grade Holstein Cows, T. H. Short, R. W. Blake, R. L. Quaas, L. Dale Van Vleck

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Genetic and environmental (co)variance components for 4% FCM yield were simultaneously estimated by REML for grade cows from herds stratified by within-herd SD for 305d mature equivalent milk and time period. Data were lactation records from 299,441 daughters of 2489 AI b d s that calved for the first time from 1970 to 1985 in California, New York, or Texas.
Sire and residual variance components for FCM increased with SD in all time periods and were slightly larger for second than for first lactations. Residual components were of uniform size across time periods within each SD class, but sire components …

Conservation Genetics Of Pacific Salmon, Robin Waples, David Teel Jun 1990

Conservation Genetics Of Pacific Salmon, Robin Waples, David Teel

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

Recent reductions in the abundance of all Pacific salmon species (Oncorhynchus spp.), coupled with large in- creases in artificial production, demand that careful attention be paid to genetic changes occurring in both wild and cultured populations. Analysis of electrophoretic data for chinook salmon (O. tshawytscha) from the Pacific coast of Oregon revealed substantial allele frequency changes over 2-4 years in hatchery, but not wild, populations. Unfortunately, our understanding of the causes of this result is hampered by a lack of theoretical models designed for organisms with life history features like those of Pacific salmon. We used computer …

Prevalence Of Baculovirus Penaei In Experimentally Infected White Shrimp (Penaeus Vannamei) Relative To Age, Brian D. Leblanc, Robin M. Overstreet Jun 1990

Prevalence Of Baculovirus Penaei In Experimentally Infected White Shrimp (Penaeus Vannamei) Relative To Age, Brian D. Leblanc, Robin M. Overstreet

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Age of Penaeus vannamei influences infections with Baculovirus penaei in different ways. The virus has less effect on host survival in the older of seven tested age-groups of shrimp experimentally administered virus; no virus-induced mortality occurred in postlarvae older than 63 days. Prevalence of newly acquired infections decreases as age increases, sometimes to zero. Prepatency periods appear to increase by a few days in infections in most successively older tested age-groups. Actual and relative numbers of affected hepatopancreatic cells decrease from 75 or 80% typically seen in postlarvae infected when 3 days old to ≤ 5% typically seen in infected …
