Report On The Orthoptera Of Trinidad, West Indies, Lawrence Bruner Jan 1906

Report On The Orthoptera Of Trinidad, West Indies, Lawrence Bruner

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Several years ago Mr. H. D. Chipman collected insects on the Island of Trinidad, British West Indies, and the writer secured a fairly complete set of the Orthoptera taken by him. Since that time a few additional forms have been obtained from G. E. Tryhane, of St. Anne's, Trinidad, and others from W. E. Broadway, of St. George's Grenada, who formerly collected on Trinidad. Altogether upwards of one hundred (112) species have thus been accumulated and form the basis of this paper.

Unlike others of the West Indies, this island is more closely related to the South American mainland in …

A New Miocene Artiodactyl, Erwin Hinckley Barbour Dec 1905

A New Miocene Artiodactyl, Erwin Hinckley Barbour

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

AMONG several discoveries made in the Daimonelix beds (Loup Fork) of Sioux County, Nebraska, the most striking one of the season seems to be that of a new four-horned ancestral antelope, Syndyoceras cooki, the skull of which is herein figured and briefly described. The discovery was made by Mr. Harold G. Cook, a former Lincoln student and a member of the Morrill geological expedition of 1905.

Cattle Feeding Experiment. Roughness Supplementary To Corn For Fattening Two-Year-Old Range Steers., H. R. Smith Nov 1905

Cattle Feeding Experiment. Roughness Supplementary To Corn For Fattening Two-Year-Old Range Steers., H. R. Smith

University of Nebraska Historical Extension: Bulletin

In the economical production of beef, the character of the roughness fed in connection with corn is a factor of greater importance than we have given it in the past. Heretofore, 'the inclination among cattle feeders has been to depend almost entirely upon corn for producing beef, supplying almost any sort of roughness that would satisfy the craving of the animal for something bulky. Some, in fact, have operated upon the theory that in producing beef for the market it is desirable to feed corn as heavily as possible, discouraging the consumption of rough feed by supplying an inferior quality …

On The Movements Of Petals, Esther Pearl Hensel Jul 1905

On The Movements Of Petals, Esther Pearl Hensel

University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)

The following paper has to do with an investigation of the physical causes· which bring about opening and closing movements, periodic or otherwise, of certain flowers. With that end in view, seven different species of flowering plants have been experimented upon directly, a much larger number being simply observed with respect to the nature, time, etc., of their anthotropic movements. Movement consists in the corolla taking upon itself either the open or closed position for certain periods of the day or night; for example, the morning glory (Ipomoea purpurea) opens early in the morning (from 4:00 to 5 …

A Test Of Calf Rations: Methods Of Controlling Contamination Of Milk During Milking, A. L. Haecker, C. W. Melick Feb 1905

A Test Of Calf Rations: Methods Of Controlling Contamination Of Milk During Milking, A. L. Haecker, C. W. Melick

University of Nebraska Historical Extension: Bulletin

Since the spring of 1899 the Department of Dairy Husbandry has been conducting experiments in calf rearing by using hand separator skim-milk and light rations of grain.

The first test was published in Bulletin No. 68 of this Station and dealt with a comparison of calves reared by hand with those sucking their dams. The hand-fed calves were reared on skim-milk, ground flaxseed being used to replace the lacking butter fat. This test resulted in a fine lot of calves reared at a very low cost, but it also brought out the fact that much more data were needed in …

Plant Migration Studies, Charles E. Bessey Jan 1905

Plant Migration Studies, Charles E. Bessey

University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)

It is a familiar fact that new species appear from time to time among the native plants of a region. Such newcomers turn out on examination to be new only in the sense that they have not previously lived in the region, and in every instance these new plants are found to have come from other regions where they had existed for a longer or shorter period of time. In some cases the new species remain for a time and then disappear, or at least become inconspicuous, but more commonly they crowd in among the former plants and become permanent …

Electric Double-Refraction In Carbon Disulphide At Low Potentials, Gustaf W. Elmen Jan 1905

Electric Double-Refraction In Carbon Disulphide At Low Potentials, Gustaf W. Elmen

University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)

When light polarized at an angle of forty-five degrees to the; lines of force is passed through certain dielectrics, between two parallel electrodes, they become double-refracting. The difference of phase, 0, between the two components of light at right angles and parallel to the lines of force, as represented by Kerr and verified by later investigators, is

where B is the electro-optic constant, depending on the dielectric, l the length, and a the distance between the plate electrodes in centimeters, and P the difference of potential between the electrodes in e.G.S. units.

From data obtained …

Italian Villas And Their Gardens, Edith Wharton, Maxfield Parrish Jan 1904

Italian Villas And Their Gardens, Edith Wharton, Maxfield Parrish

Electronic Texts in American Studies

Edith Wharton’s Italian Villas and their Gardens (1904) followed her debut novel, The Valley of Decision (1902). Century magazine commissioned Wharton for a series of six articles on Italian architecture and an accompanying book-length collection. Wharton embarked out of Boston in January 1903, disembarked near Genoa, and proceeded to tour widely — Viterbo up to Orvieto; Siena, Florence, Rome, and Venice — following recommendations from Vernon Lee, the book’s dedicatee, who “better than anyone else, has understood and interpreted the garden-magic of Italy.” The book analyzes more than eighty wonders, intercut with fifty-two illustrations: wide-angle photographs and evocative color compositions …

Some Foreign Botanical Gardens And Parks, Charles E. Bessey

Landscape Architecture Program: Faculty Scholarly and Creative Activity

Last summer I had the privilege of visiting a number of botanical gardens and parks in different parts of Europe. The American visitor abroad is constantly reminded of the abundance of parks and botanical gardens in not only the larger cities but even in the small cities and towns. Hyde Park, Regent's Park, St. James Park and Green Park, London; Kew Gardens; Thiergarten, Berlin; Prater Park, Vienna; Moscow; Kislovodsk; Vladikavkaz, Tiflis; Erivan; Batum; Odessa.

Coming now to our own city of Lincoln, a city which has many things about it which are very attractive, one'is made to drop his head …
