A Plea For The Protection Of Our Birds, Lawrence Bruner
A Plea For The Protection Of Our Birds, Lawrence Bruner
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
The fact that insect depredations are increasing in extent each succeeding year makes it plain to us that something must be done to prevent it, and that quickly. We have found to our sorrow that, although we are continually making increased efforts to destroy these pests, our efforts avail but little and the destruction of our crops goes on. What, then, is to be done? How can we be released from this ever-increasing struggle for existence? The answer is plain. Heed the advice of the Naturalist who has made a study of the life-histories of the various other living creatures …
The Arrhenuri Of The United States, Ruth Marshall
The Arrhenuri Of The United States, Ruth Marshall
School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
The Arrhenuri comprise the largest genus of the Hydrachnidz, and one of the most highly differentiated and widely distributed. The genus is easily recognized by the following characters. The thick chitinous covering of the body is pierced by large pores. A circular furrow on the dorsal side marks off an area which is entirely enclosed in the female, in the male usually open onto the posterior extension of the body. The females are oval in form and much alike ; the males are smaller and vary greatly from each other and from the females. They are characterized by a posterior …

Forage Crops For Hogs In Kansas And Oklahoma., C. E. Quinn
Forage Crops For Hogs In Kansas And Oklahoma., C. E. Quinn
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Farmers are more and more realizing that pasture is necessary for the most economical production of pork. Those who are raising hogs and putting them on the market with the least ·cost have their entire farms fenced" hog-tight." This enables them to give the hogs the range of the meadows and fields when the crops have been harvested. Much that would otherwise be lost is thus saved by the hogs, for they are among the best gleaners of waste grain, weed seeds, and insects in the fields.
Skeletal Parts Of Moropus, Erwin Hinckley Barbour
Skeletal Parts Of Moropus, Erwin Hinckley Barbour
Conservation and Survey Division: Faculty and Staff Publications
In the foregoing publication, it was announced that the skull of Moropus had been discovered. Heretofore the genus had been known chiefly by scattered teeth and fragments, mostly toe bones, but now that the collections of Hon. Charles H. Morrill, Nebraska State Museum, have the skeletal parts necessary for the restoration of this remarkable animal, it seems advisable to supplement the brief illustrated report concerning the skull of Moropus with a similar paper concerning its skeletal parts.
Revision Of The Non-Combed Eyed Siphonaptera, Karl Jordan, Nathaniel Charles Rothschild
Revision Of The Non-Combed Eyed Siphonaptera, Karl Jordan, Nathaniel Charles Rothschild
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Library Materials
Introduction (excerpt)
The importance of certain species of fleas in relation to the epidemiology of plague has been so amply demonstrated (see Journal of Hygiene, volumes VI 1906, p. 426, and VII 1907, p. 395) that an explanation appears scarcely necessary for our publishing a paper dealing with a revision of the non-pectinated eyed Siphonaptera. With the demonstration that fleas are capable of transmitting plague, their study at once ceased to be the mere hobby of a small group of entomological specialists. An accurate knowledge of fleas, both with regard to their structure and biology, is at present a …

Evidence Of Man In The Loess Of Nebraska, Erwin Hinckley Barbour
Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications
After careful investigation the writer stands ready to announce his belief in the occurrence of human remains in the loess of this state, and for this primitive type he has proposed the name Nebraska Loess Man. Such importance attaches to the discovery as to warrant a paper devoted to the geological facts connected therewith.

Opening Of The Indian Territory, G. E. Condra
Opening Of The Indian Territory, G. E. Condra
Conservation and Survey Division: Faculty and Staff Publications
The opening of Indian country has continued from Colonial days to the present. Usually it has resulted from force and treaty, the strong dispossessing the weak. As a result, the Red man has, in general, moved frontierward, ahead of industrial waves, remaining for a longer time only on reservations set aside for tribes. The Indian's struggle even on these reserves has been a losing one, resulting largely from war, disease, and the cupidity of whites. History shows that Indian life and Indian institutions have not prevailed against the white man's civilization and commerce. GATHERING THE TRIBES. The Indian Territory and …
A Workable Bed Of Coal In Nebraska, Erwin Hinckley Barbour
A Workable Bed Of Coal In Nebraska, Erwin Hinckley Barbour
Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications
ALTHOUGH for years past the state legislature of Nebraska has offered a bounty amounting to four thousand dollars for the discovery of a twenty-six-inch bed of workable coal, and five thousand for a thirty-six-inch bed, it is only within the past few days that any one has filed with the governor legitimate claims for the bounty. The bed of coal recently exposed, near Peru, Neb., extending some forty-two feet along the sides of a tunnel back from the banks of Honey Creek, seems to be fully thirty-four inches in thickness, as measured by the writer. This is known as the …
Corneille: The Neo-Classic Tragedy And The Greek, Prosser Hall Frye
Corneille: The Neo-Classic Tragedy And The Greek, Prosser Hall Frye
University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)
It is not solely the fault of our critlcs that we have no such criticism as the French; it is also the fault of our literature. To write a history of English literature like M. Lanson's history -of French literature is, even on that small scale, impossible from the nature of the subject. . To be sure, there is no such general interest in the former as in the latter. The historian or the critic who undertakes French letters finds an opinion already formed, a canon already established. His meal is at least partly ground for him; ' he has …
Malarial Fever In Horses, A. T. Peters
Malarial Fever In Horses, A. T. Peters
University of Nebraska Historical Extension: Bulletin
This disease is also called "swamp fever" by farmers, and "pernicious anaemia" by veterinarians. In Nebraska many of the farmers call the disease "typhoid fever," for it resembles this fever very much. The manner in which the disease is contracted by horses is not definitely understood. In the last few years, the veterinarians in the Philippines have discovered a disease, prevalent in India under the name of "surra," the description of which corresponds very much to that of malarial fever of horses in this country, with the exception that bacteriologists have not been able to find the surra parasite in …
