New Elementary Agriculture For Rural And Graded Schools, Charles E. Bessey, Lawrence Bruner, G. D. Swezey
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
Nebraska is an agricultural state. The products of her soil are the basis of her industries and her prosperity. The children of our great state of Nebraska should be familiar with our crops, our grains and grasses, our flowers and fruits, our trees and shrubs and weeds, our domestic animals and birds and insects. Our children should have a practical knowledge of the management of a farm, of the composition of the soil, and of the adaptability of the farm and its soil for the cultivation of certain plants and the counter effect of such plant growth upon the soil. …

Papers in Ornithology
In 1896, Prof. Bruner published his list entitled "Some Notes on Nebraska Birds." As a working basis for the study of the ornithology of the state it has proven invaluable and it has also been greatly in demand by people not ornithologists, who desired to "know something about our birds." That edition was exhausted some time ago and its author has been frequently urged to publish another. However, the organization of the Nebraska Ornithologists' Union and the development of ornithology in the University has led to such a rapid increase in our knowledge in the past five years that it …

Article Xxii.-A New Genus Of Ground Sloth From The Pleistocene Of Nebraska, Barnum Brown
University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers
This genus is founded on a nearly perfect skull and lower jaw in the American Museum collections (No. 2780), with associated skeletal material including five cervical vertebrae, tibia, fibula, calcaneum, astragalus, lunar, middle digit of manus, and ribs, found by the Expedition of 1897 near Hay Spring, Nebraska. Professor Henry F. Osborn has placed this material in the writer's hands for description.

Article Xxiv.-List Of The Pleistocene Fauna From Hay Springs, Nebraska, W. D. Matthew
University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers
In I893 and I897 field-parties from the American Museum were sent out by Professor Osborn to collect in the Pleistocene at this locality, a bone-bed near the Niobrara River, not far from Hay Springs. A large collection of horse and camel remains was obtained, and a few specimens of other animals. The horses have been carefully studied by Mr. Gidley, the camels by Dr. Wortman; the remainder of the fauna has been revised and partially studied by the writer, but no results have hitherto been published. A list of the fauna may be of some interest to compare with that …

On A Coccidium (Klossiella Muris, Gen. Et Spec. Nov.) Parasitic In The Renal Epithelium Of The Mouse, Theobald Smith, Herbert P. Johnson
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Library Materials
In 1889, Smith published a preliminary description of a polysporous coccidium found in the epithelium of the convoluted tubules of the mouse's kidney. Several stages of the parasite were seen but the scantiness of the material left many gaps in the life-cycle. During investigations recently made to determine the mode of transmission of the Sarcosporidium of the mouse, Smith found a considerable number of gray mice, caught in the animal room connected with this laboratory, whose kidneys were abundantly invaded by this coccidium. This favorable opportunity of examining more thoroughly into the life-history of this sporozoon was utilized, and, as …
An Addition To The Parasites Of The Human Ear, Roscoe Pound
An Addition To The Parasites Of The Human Ear, Roscoe Pound
School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
The list of Fungi which have been reported as parasites in the human ear is somewhat large. The number of species which are well identified is much smaller. The confusion long prevalent in the groups to which the ear-parasites belong, recently abated in the Black Moulds by A. Fischer, but still in force in the Imperfect Fungi, and the fact that otologists have not been much concerned with mycology nor always able to command the assistance of expert mycologists, have united with the inherent difficulties due to the effect of situs on the forms themselves to produce errors in determination, …

Wells And Windmills In Nebraska, Erwin Hinckley Barbour
Wells And Windmills In Nebraska, Erwin Hinckley Barbour
United States Geological Survey: Publications
SIR :
I have the honor to transmit herewith a manuscript entitled "Wells and Windmills in Nebraska," prepared by Erwin Hinckley Barbour, professor of geology in the University of Nebraska and acting State geologist. The data for this manuscript were obtained by Professor Barbour incidental to his studies of the geology of the State, and have been rounded out by special work carried on under his direction. The original manuscript as prepared consisted of two parts the first upon wells, and the second upon homemade windmills but owing to delays in printing the first part, it has been considered advisable …

Tales Of The Enchanted Islands Of The Atlantic, Thomas Wentworth Higginson, Albert Herter
Tales Of The Enchanted Islands Of The Atlantic, Thomas Wentworth Higginson, Albert Herter
Electronic Texts in American Studies
The wondrous tales that gathered for more than a thousand years about the islands of the Atlantic deep are a part of the mythical period of American history. The sea has always been, by the mystery of its horizon, the fury of its storms, and the variableness of the atmosphere above it, the foreordained land of romance. In all ages and with all sea-going races there has always been something especially fascinating about an island amid the ocean. Its very existence has for all explorers an air of magic.
The order of the tales in the present work follows roughly …
The Homemade Windmills Of Nebraska, Erwin Hinckley Barbour
The Homemade Windmills Of Nebraska, Erwin Hinckley Barbour
Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications
[A classic work on vernacular architecture and agricultural engineering.]
While engaged upon the preparation of a paper treating of the relations of the homemade windmills of our State to its agriculture, the writer finds such great and increasing demand for some short and immediate report on the subject, that he is led at the request of correspondents to publish the following brief preliminary paper, awaiting the time when a systematic and formal report may be possible.
lt is not the writer's object or intention to offer our citizens advice—for he is the one who is under instruction—but rather to bring …
Review Of The Phytogeography Of Nebraska. 1. General Survey, By Roscoe Pound, Elizabeth Britton
Review Of The Phytogeography Of Nebraska. 1. General Survey, By Roscoe Pound, Elizabeth Britton
School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
From the preface we learn that this work is the result of nearly five years of active study of the floral covering of Nebraska, carried on by the members of the Botanical Seminar in the Botanical Survey of the State. The systematic study of the vegetation of Nebraska was begun by Dr. Bessey in 1884, and has since been carried on by him and his students, all previous collecting having been more or less desultory and unreliable. The Botanical Survey was organized in 1892, and its work has been directed to the collecting of specimens and observations for a series …
