Growth Measurements Of Holstein Females From Birth To Seven Years, H. P. Davis, I. L. Hathaway Nov 1955

Growth Measurements Of Holstein Females From Birth To Seven Years, H. P. Davis, I. L. Hathaway

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

Measurements of growth, to be meaningful, must be taken of various parts of the body, at regular intervals, under standardized environmental conditions, from birth through the growth span of the animal. From these measurements skeletal growth standards may be prepared for the several ages. Such standards can be used to measure growth at any age period. They will serve the research worker as a guide for experimental procedure and will provide the livestock raiser a basis with which his animals may be compared. Present standards of growth for dairy cattle are based mostly upon live weight, although considerable data are …

Fall Distribution Of Birds In A Palouse River Canyon, Frank B. Golley, Paul A. Johnsgard Oct 1955

Fall Distribution Of Birds In A Palouse River Canyon, Frank B. Golley, Paul A. Johnsgard

Paul Johnsgard Collection

During the fall and winter of 1953 the writers undertook a general ecological study of a portion of the Palouse River valley, near Armstrong, Whitman County, Washington. During the course of these investigations records were kept on the numbers of birds observed and the vegetation in which they were located. It was anticipated that these observations might indicate bird-use of the major vegetational types found in the area. Several investigators (Dumas 1950; Wing 1949) have published distributional data for birds of the Palouse grassland during the nesting, period, but few have been concerned with distribution patterns during the fall migration.

A List Of Cestode Parasites From California Mammals, Marietta Voge Oct 1955

A List Of Cestode Parasites From California Mammals, Marietta Voge

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

This report brings together information on the occurrence and distribution of cestode parasites in California mammals. The original information reported herein, was obtained by students, myself, and other staff members of this university. Although the host-parasite list which follows is far from complete, the dearth of knowledge about the helminth fauna in California seems to justify the publication of relatively few data, in the hope that other workers will be able to use this list as a starting point and add to it.

With few exceptions, the common names of the hosts, as given in the host list, were obtained …

Judging Quality In Dairy Products, P. A. Downs Sep 1955

Judging Quality In Dairy Products, P. A. Downs

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars

In the dairy industry increasing attention is being paid to the question of quality of products. The well established system of buying and selling butter and cheese on the basis of quality by score or grade is practiced in the principal markets of the world. The other dairy products, while not marketed by score, are receiving more and more attention in this respect. As more information becomes available and the judging better standardized, other dairy products will doubtless be sold by grade.

Settlement In The Santa Cruz Area: A Proposed Program For The Development Of An Area With European Immigrants And Bolivian Indians, Ernesto Wende-Frankel

Open Access Master's Theses (through 2010)

Introduction

This study involves conceptual analysis in a broad interpretation of the term of a public administration problem situation embracing cultural, as well as politico-economic factors. A program ot action is recommended in considerable detail, calling tor the settlement of colonists to develop agriculturally a large amount of Bolivian land that promises to become, with proper husbandry, highly productive.

The author is a Bolivian agricultural economist who is making public administration his career, with particular emphasis upon the efficient utilization or land--and manpower, which for sometime past in his native country has been poorly organized and under employed. During the …

Artificial Insemination Of Turkeys, H. L. Wiegers Aug 1955

Artificial Insemination Of Turkeys, H. L. Wiegers

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars

Artificial insemination should be used for turkeys when results from natural matings are unsatisfactory. There is no hard and fast fertility rule to follow and each breeder will have his own basis of appraisal for the different varieties of turkeys. But one can say that when fertility drops below 65 per cent it is time to take action.

Unusual Pathogenicity Of Diphyllobothrium Sp. In A Black Bear, Robert L. Rausch Jul 1955

Unusual Pathogenicity Of Diphyllobothrium Sp. In A Black Bear, Robert L. Rausch

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

The black bear, Ursus americanus Pallas, has been found to he an exceptionally good host for a common species of Diphyllobothrium, as evidenced by the large size attained by individual strobilae, and the duration of infections experimentally established. Since 1950, the writer has used at least five of these bears annually in the study of Diphyllobothrium spp. With the single exception reported herein, no adverse effect to the hosts has been recognized.

Industrial Wastes, Charles E. Renn Mar 1955

Industrial Wastes, Charles E. Renn

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications

This paper presents a summary of experiences with a variety of cyanogenic wastes. The work has attempted to evaluate the interaction of waste bearing waters and the environment in terms of waste disposal design requirements. In this, the approach is somewhat more critical than that commonly taken by fisheries biologists, conservationists, and others who have been concerned with the "preventive" aspects of waste disposal.

The first phases of the work were designed to discover the tolerable limits of certain waste components to fresh water fish. This was undertaken in 1950; in the interval the composition of the wastes has been …

Birds Of Jasper National Park, Alberta, Canada, Ian Mctaggart Cowan Jan 1955

Birds Of Jasper National Park, Alberta, Canada, Ian Mctaggart Cowan

Other Publications in Wildlife Management

Jasper Park, with an area of approximately 4 200 square miles, is the largest accessible primeval wildlife sanctuary on this continent and as such its bird lite is of the greatest interest. The meagre available records of earlier conditions indicate that noteworthy changes in the park's avifauna have taken place in the last ,0 years. There can be little doubt that other changes will take place during the years to come. For this reason, then, if tor no other, it seems desirable that as complete a record as possible of the current situation be made, for only against it can …

Wintering Calves In The Nebraska Sandhills, E. M. Brouse Jan 1955

Wintering Calves In The Nebraska Sandhills, E. M. Brouse

Panhandle Research and Extension Center

In the Sandhills area of Nebraska, which is principally a cattle producing section, there is little land suitable for tillage. Native grass is the chief source of income from the land. In the hills it is utilized for summer and winter grazing and in the valleys, for hay. The production of grass from year to year is relatively dependable. Even during the severe drought of the thirties, there was enough grass and hay to carry almost the usual number of cattle.

Grass of the Sandhills area, however, is low in protein and phosphorus. This is a serious shortcoming, especially when …

The Place Of The Legal Fraternity In Legal Education, Milton D. Green Jan 1955

The Place Of The Legal Fraternity In Legal Education, Milton D. Green

Nebraska Law Review

Legal education in America began with the apprenticeship system. If a young man wanted to become a lawyer, he persuaded an older practitioner to take him into his office where he ran errands, served papers, “polished up the handle on the big front door,” and in his spare time read law. That is a far cry from the modern approved law school which requires as a condition to admission at least three years of college work and the completion of three full years of intensive legal study. Throughout the years there has been steady pressure to improve the quality of …
