Most people believe that biodiversity loss is human-caused, yet they may not realize how many others share this belief. Such collective misperceptions—known as pluralistic ignorance—may hinder individual and system changes required to address biodiversity loss. At the same time, reducing pluralistic ignorance may promote positive change. In this Perspective, we provide a brief overview of existing work on pluralistic ignorance about environmental topics and propose an agenda for impactful pluralistic ignorance research in the biodiversity domain. We highlight several research gaps and offer recommendations, including (a) investigating different forms of pluralistic ignorance, (b) improving our understanding of consequences and determinants, …

“Being Away From Everything”: Exploring The Importance Of Access To Nature For Individuals Living With Chronic Low Back Pain, Alexander Smith, Kayleigh Wyles, Patricia Schofield, Sam Hughes Jan 2025

“Being Away From Everything”: Exploring The Importance Of Access To Nature For Individuals Living With Chronic Low Back Pain, Alexander Smith, Kayleigh Wyles, Patricia Schofield, Sam Hughes

School of Psychology

Chronic low back pain is a persistent and debilitating condition, and therapeutic outcomes in the long term are generally poor. There is growing evidence to support the ineffectiveness of ‘one-size-fits-all’ pharmacological approaches to pain management. To that end, alternative non-pharmacological therapies such as green social prescribing and time spent in nature are gaining popularity. But it is imperative to understand to what extent these potential interventions are viable by gaining a deeper insight into the lived experiences of the chronic low back pain community. The present qualitative cross-sectional study employed ten semi-structured interviews (9 women, M age = 50.1, M …

Background

Doublecortin-like kinase 1 (DCLK1) isoforms play distinct roles in the progression of gastrointestinal cancers. For the first time ever, the current study aimed to generate DCLK1-S-specific monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) to evaluate the clinical value of DCLK1-S (short isoform) in gastric cancer (GC).

Materials and methods

Mice were immunized with a unique 7-mer synthetic peptide of DCLK1-S conjugated with keyhole limpet hemocyanin (KLH). Immunoreactivity of hybridomas and mAbs was determined by ELISA assays and immunohistochemistry (IHC). DCLK1-S expression in two GC cell lines was assessed by flow cytometry. After characterization, the expression pattern of DCLK1-S was investigated in different histological …

Acute, Low-Grade Inflammation Elevates White Matter Sensitivity To Ischaemia, Alex Mellor Jan 2025

Acute, Low-Grade Inflammation Elevates White Matter Sensitivity To Ischaemia, Alex Mellor

Peninsula Medical School Theses

Ischaemic brain injuries, including ischaemic stroke, are highly prevalent neurological diseases. Acute, low-grade inflammation, often resulting from peripheral infection, has emerged as a risk factor. White matter axons, and their supporting glia, are susceptible to both ischaemic and neuroinflammatory injury. The mechanisms behind ischaemic injury in white matter are well established. However, the white matter response to acute, low-grade inflammation, and how this can interact with co-morbidities such as cerebral ischaemia, are yet to be examined. This thesis evaluated the response of white matter to acute, low-grade inflammation and the downstream effects this had on its sensitivity to ischaemia. Here, …

Targeting Aldehyde Dehydrogenases In Nf2-Null Meningioma And Schwannoma, Libby Williams Jan 2025

Targeting Aldehyde Dehydrogenases In Nf2-Null Meningioma And Schwannoma, Libby Williams

Peninsula Medical School Theses

Meningioma and schwannoma are tumours of the brain and nervous system that are frequently driven by loss or mutation of the gene NF2, which encodes the tumour suppressor protein Merlin. Dysregulated Hippo pathway signalling, caused by NF2 loss, drives overexpression of aldehyde dehydrogenase 1A1 (ALDH1A1) in NF2-null schwannoma. High expression of ALDH1A1, and the related isoform ALDH1A3 have been identified as markers of cancer stem cell activity and have been correlated with poor prognosis and chemoresistance in several cancers. This project aims to clarify the role ofaldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) enzymes in meningioma tumours and evaluate their potential as future therapeutic …

Targeting Mertk On Tumour Cells And Macrophages: A Potential Intervention For Sporadic And Nf2-Related Meningioma And Schwannoma Tumours, Kevin Herrera Keane

Peninsula Medical School Theses

Although schwannomas and meningiomas are generally benign and slow-growing, the mass effect of either tumour within the nervous system causes life-altering symptoms. Individuals with NF2-related schwannomatosis may develop schwannomas and meningiomas, increasing tumour burden. The primary treatment for large or symptomatic schwannomas and meningiomas is surgical resection, which may not be suitable in cases involving tumours located near sensitive neuroanatomy or clinically vulnerable individuals. Not all schwannomas and meningiomas respond to alternative targeted treatments such as stereotactic radiosurgery or the vascular endothelial growth factor inhibitor bevacizumab. The main objective of this thesis was to investigate targeting of the receptor tyrosine …

Global calls for greater ocean protection have sparked renewed interest in very large marine protected areas (VLMPAs, >100,000 km2) to achieve management targets; however, their conservation value is debated. We assessed the suitability of a VLMPA (640,000 km2) in the Indian Ocean for capturing the movements of resident mobile marine megafauna. We found that 95% of foraging, breeding and/or locally migrating individuals occurred within the VLMPA despite variable habitat use; adult hawksbill turtles (Eretmochelys imbricata, n = 22, 6124 tracking days) foraged on mesophotic banks (>30 m depth), reef manta rays (Mobula alfredi, n = …

Temperature-Driven Plasticity In Boldness, Its Predictability And Learning In The Beadlet Anemone, Actinia Equina, Samantha Simpson, Dunia Gonzales, Mark Briffa Jan 2025

Temperature-Driven Plasticity In Boldness, Its Predictability And Learning In The Beadlet Anemone, Actinia Equina, Samantha Simpson, Dunia Gonzales, Mark Briffa

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Variation in ambient temperature is for poikilothermic animals a key driver of behavioural variation because of its multiplicative effects on metabolic rate. Apart from the fundamental environmental source of behavioural variation, understanding the effects of temperature is also important in the context of predicted climate change scenarios. In particular, behavioural responses to extreme temperature fluctuation could represent maladaptive responses to rapidly changing environments. However, behavioural responses to moderate temperature fluctuations, within ranges that are routinely experienced, likely represent adaptive plasticity. Recent studies have addressed this question within an animal personality framework, which can quantify the effects of temperature regime across …

Kafka In The Plague Years: Reinterpreting Absurdity In The 2020s, Chris Lownie

Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)

No word better encapsulates the confusion and inequality proliferating in the post-2020 global world than “absurd.” Absurdity consumes the way we interact with one another, going about life-as-usual in pocket worlds in which the individual is alienated from both oneself and others. Life is defined by a series of problems that regularly go ignored by both institution and general populace alike, but not by the human body: the effects of sustained illness and reinfection by recurrent viruses in a world that no longer acknowledges their severity nor their pervasiveness nor steps we may take towards personal safety. Daily life has …

Explaining Mass Shooting Motivations: A Case Survey Analysis Of Us Mass Shootings (2006-2024), Isaiah H. Harris Jan 2025

Explaining Mass Shooting Motivations: A Case Survey Analysis Of Us Mass Shootings (2006-2024), Isaiah H. Harris

Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)

Research on the motivations behind mass shootings remains inconclusive as these events often lack a singular or explicit cause. The motivations of mass shooters are complex, shaped by the interplay of psychological, social, and ideological factors. While some attacks are clearly driven by extremist beliefs, others appear to stem from less defined forces such as depravity or sadistic intent. Existing typologies, such as Langman’s (2009) analysis of school shooters, offer valuable insight but are limited in scope. This study expands upon previous research by examining U.S. mass shootings from 2006 to 2024 to determine whether such events are more frequently …

A Study Of Glyphosate, Pesticide Mixtures, And Metabolic Health Outcomes: Integrating Epidemiologic, Mechanistic, And Ecological Evidence On Environmental Drivers Of Metabolic Health, Sarah Otaru Jan 2025

A Study Of Glyphosate, Pesticide Mixtures, And Metabolic Health Outcomes: Integrating Epidemiologic, Mechanistic, And Ecological Evidence On Environmental Drivers Of Metabolic Health, Sarah Otaru

Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)

Glyphosate, the most extensively used herbicide worldwide, has become a ubiquitous environmental contaminant. Although initially considered safe due to its specific biochemical target in plants, emerging evidence suggests that chronic, low-level human exposure may disrupt metabolic processes. Simultaneously, the global rise in metabolic disorders such as metabolic syndrome (MetS), obesity, and type 2 diabetes, has created a pressing need to identify novel, potentially modifiable environmental contributors. This dissertation investigates the relationship between glyphosate and metabolic health through a triangulated framework that integrates individual-level epidemiological analysis, systematic synthesis of mechanistic evidence, and ecological evaluation of pesticide mixtures.

The first study employed …

Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)

The first chapter examines the economic impacts of large theme park openings in China from 2000 to 2020 using a newly compiled dataset on county-level theme parks and entrepreneurship. Leveraging the staggered openings of theme parks across various counties, we document three main findings. First, theme park openings lead to a 14% increase in entrepreneurial activities, especially in tourism-related service sectors. This result is robust to the instrumental variable approach, the heterogeneous treatment effect, alternative specification and measurement, and propensity score matching. Second, theme park openings generate spillover effects on neighboring counties within a 50-75 kilometer radius. Third, we identify …

The Rights Of Nature Meaning-Making Experiments In Ecuador: A Pragmatist Inquiry, Lourdes Aguas Gonzalez Jan 2025

The Rights Of Nature Meaning-Making Experiments In Ecuador: A Pragmatist Inquiry, Lourdes Aguas Gonzalez

Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)

Ecuador is the first and only country in the world to recognize nature as a subject of rights in its national Constitution, with the most court cases to date, and with a vibrant moral imagination regarding the more-than-human world. Building on the pragmatist tradition, my research examines three questions: What are the rights of nature in Ecuador? How is nature politically represented in Ecuadorian legal forums? And how can collective problem-solving experiments around the rights of nature in Ecuador inform moral inquiry? To answer these questions, I bring sociology in conversation with philosophy. My theoretical and methodological tools as a …

The Impossibility Of Religious Equality, Zalman Rothschild Jan 2025

The Impossibility Of Religious Equality, Zalman Rothschild

Articles

The Supreme Court has recently adopted a new rule of religious equality: Laws unconstitutionally discriminate against religion when they deny religious exemptions but provide secular exemptions that undermine the law’s interests to the same degree as would a religious exemption. All the Justices and a cadre of scholars have agreed in principle with this approach to religious equality. This Essay argues that this new rule of religious equality is inherently unworkable, in part because it turns on treating that which is religious the same as its secular “comparators.” But religion is not comparable to anything neither in terms of its …

Optimized Vgg16 For Multi-Class Classification Of Alzheimer's Disease, Amira M. Basuoni, Hussein Seleem, Amira S. Ashour

Mansoura Engineering Journal

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a severe neurological disorder that leads to memory loss and other cognitive impairments, ultimately resulting in death. With the advancement of deep learning, several researchers implemented a deep learning (DL)-based classification system for diagnosing such disease. However, determining the proper setting of the parameters, like learning rate and the number of dense units in the classification model is essential to achieve the best performance. Although manual tuning and grid search methods may be used, they are often time-consuming and cannot achieve the optimal model’s design. Accordingly, this paper proposed an improved model of the Visual Geometry …

Eros And The Sublime: Tools For Reaching Toward An Altered Ecological Consciousness, Aineka Carlson Jan 2025

Eros And The Sublime: Tools For Reaching Toward An Altered Ecological Consciousness, Aineka Carlson

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

This thesis explores connections between the Kantian sublime and Anne Carson’s ideas regarding “eros.” Since Kant’s Critique of Judgement was published in 1790, the Kantian sublime has grown in popularity and been utilized by theorists and creative writers alike. While the Kantian sublime is often associated with nature in popular culture, there are certain egocentric and phallocentric elements of this mode of thinking that might inhibit a biocentric mindset. Through a character study of Oryx from Margaret Atwood’s novel Oryx and Crake, this thesis draws relations between the subjugation of women, nature, and the ways in which the popularized …

In the ecological approach to perceiving and acting, affordances are emergent, higher-order relationships between animals and their environment. Accordingly, studies have shown that affordances are perceived ‘as such’ rather than as combinations of lower-order constituents of that affordance. We investigated whether affordances are created in the same way. Participants used circular rubber mats to create steppingstone paths from Mat A to Mat B (in the ‘Stop-at-B’ condition) and from Mat A to Mat B to Mat C (in the ‘Continue-to-C’ condition). We derived and analyzed sets of variables related to gap distance, path trajectory, and path variability. Consistent with our …
