The Fourth H Is For Health : Extension Circular 10-01-2, Mary B. Nelson Jan 1956

The Fourth H Is For Health : Extension Circular 10-01-2, Mary B. Nelson

Nebraska 4-H Clubs: Historical Materials and Publications

Because your health is effected by your habits, this unit of the 4-H health project is devoted to the study of personal health habits. You are expected to study your habits, determine ways for improvement and to correct some of your faults. Usually, it is advisable to try to change only a few faults at a time; rather than all of them at once. If you continuously work at self improvement, you will be surprised at how fast your health habits improve.

Rb56-182 Forty Years Of Dairy Cattle Breeding At The North Platte Experiment Station, Mogens Plum, Myron G.A. Rumery

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

In 1913 the Nebraska Legislature appropriated $17,500 to establish a Dairy Department at the North Platte Experiment Station. The department's herd was to be used in demonstrating management and breeding practices and as a source of breeding stock.

Since the North Platte herd was started, research in the field of animal breeding has developed new concepts in many phases of dairy cattle breeding and selection. In 1948 a regional project was started to study the improvement of dairy cattle through breeding and the herd of Holstein cattle at the North Platte Experiment Station became a part of this project.

This book is the result of a long-felt need by the authors and their students for a comprehensive survey of the numerous studies that have been made on plains grasslands. From southern Texas far into Saskatchewan the mid and short grasses form a magnificent prairie nearly 2,500 miles in length and approximately 400 miles wide. Kinds of communities, their composition, nature, significance and uses are fully described. Such information is of value not only to students, range technicians, and other professional conservationists, but also to ranchers and other land owners-in fact, to anyone interested in the economy of our midwestern …

Streak Mosaic Of Wheat In Nebraska And Its Control, University Of Nebraska-Lincoln Staples, W. B. Allington Jan 1956

Streak Mosaic Of Wheat In Nebraska And Its Control, University Of Nebraska-Lincoln Staples, W. B. Allington

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

A mosaic of wheat was first observed in Nebraska by Peltier in 1922. According to Haskell and Wood (1923) Peltier found diseased plants in a large number of winter and spring wheat varieties at Lincoln and, in some instances, he successfully inoculated wheat and corn from the juice of infected plants. The temperatures under which Peltier maintained his inoculated plants are unknown and other criteria now employed to characterize the viruses were not utilized. It is probable, however, that he was working with what is now known as wheat streak mosaic virus.

This bulletin reports the results of studies on …

Waterfowl Sex Ratios During Spring In Washington State And Their Interpretation, Paul A. Johnsgard, Irven O. Buss Jan 1956

Waterfowl Sex Ratios During Spring In Washington State And Their Interpretation, Paul A. Johnsgard, Irven O. Buss

Papers in Ornithology

Sex-ratio studies have received much attention from research workers in recent years. The contributions of Hochbaum (1944), Petrides (1944) and others have yielded considerable information on sex ratios in waterfowl; Beer (1945) and Yocom (1949) have presented data for the state of Washington. To interpret regional data on waterfowl sex ratios adequately, it is necessary to obtain a series of uninterrupted observations covering the entire migration period of the species concerned. In 1954, an ecologic study was conducted in the Potholes area, Grant County, central Washington (Johnsgard, 1956). During the period February 15 to May 16, sex-ratio data were collected …

One brachiopod variety is proposed. The ostracode species are distributed through 11 families and 23 genera. Thirty-two species and one variety are new, and there are eight new genera. Holotype or syntype specimens of 13 of Weller's ostracode species have been restudied and are refigured and redescribed. Stratigraphic sections are described to provide details of the ostracode occurrences, and zonal potentialities …

The Life Cycle Of Crassiphiala Bulboglossa (Trematoda: Strgeida): Development Of The Metacercaria And Cyst, And Effect On The Fish Hosts, Glenn L. Hoffman Jan 1956

The Life Cycle Of Crassiphiala Bulboglossa (Trematoda: Strgeida): Development Of The Metacercaria And Cyst, And Effect On The Fish Hosts, Glenn L. Hoffman

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

The adult of Crassiphiala bulboglossa was described by Van Haitsma (1925) from the kingfisher, Ceryle alcycon. It can be differentiated from Uvulifer ambloplitis (Hughes, 1927), apparently its closest relative in North America, by the presence of a large bulbous holdfast occupying most of a cup-shaped forebody, and the absence of a ventral sucker. In U. ambloplitis the holdfast is small, the forebody is not cupped, and a ventral sucker is present. These species can be readily identified with the keys given by Dubois (1953).

Early Ceramic Period Sites In Northeastern Nebraska, Raymond S. Price Jan 1956

Early Ceramic Period Sites In Northeastern Nebraska, Raymond S. Price

Department of Anthropology: Theses and Student Research

The Central Plains has become an increasingly important  area of archeological research during the last half century.  The major culture complexes have been identified, the chronological sequences of these cultures have been determined, and  the general framework or Central Plains prehistory has been  outlined. Three main time periods are recognized for the Central Plains on the basis of a combined stratigraphic and  dendrochronological study (Ohampe, 1946). These three general  time divisions are, identified as beginning with the oldest: the Lithic, the Ceramic, and the Historic Periods. The Ceramic Period is further divided into the Early, Middle, and  Late divisions. The …

God And Caesar In Nebraska: A Study Of The Legal Relationship Of Church And State, 1854 -1954, Orville H. Zabel Dec 1955

God And Caesar In Nebraska: A Study Of The Legal Relationship Of Church And State, 1854 -1954, Orville H. Zabel

University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)

At a time when the control over the relationship of church and state seems to be shifting from the state governments to the Federal Government, it was decided to undertake a case study of the church-state problem in Nebraska. Such a study, stretching over a century, appeared to make possible a contribution to the understanding and solution of problems which have recently gained prominence and which will probably appear frequently in coming years. Any contribution, however slight, to an understanding of what constitutes the most desirable relationship of the church and the state may be of considerable value. Such a …

Occurrence And Distribution Of Hymenolepidid Cestodes In Shrews, Marietta Voge, Robert L. Rausch Dec 1955

Occurrence And Distribution Of Hymenolepidid Cestodes In Shrews, Marietta Voge, Robert L. Rausch

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

A survey of the literature dealing with cestodes of shrews reveals the increasing interest of contemporary parasitologists in this poorly known group of symbionts. In the United States, approximately 18 species have been described from shrews in the last 15 years. These reports deal almost exclusively with morphology of the cestodes; however, information on distribution, host specificity, rate and intensity of infection, is either fragmentary or not available in published form.
