Ticks (Ixodidae) On Birds Migrating From Europe And Asia To Africa, 1959-61, Harry Hoogstraal, Makram N. Kaiser, Melvin A. Traylor, Ezzat Guindy, Sobhy Gaber
United States Navy: Publications
The need for imaginative thinking and research in the epidemiology of diseases transmitted by arthropods is made manifest by new views of the longevity and host ranges of arthropod-borne viruses, as well as by other biological and medical phenomena. Among these is the intercontinental transport of ticks by migrating birds. During the fall migration periods of 1959, 1960 and 1961, 32 086 birds (comprising 72 forms) were examined for ticks in Egypt while en route from Asia and eastern Europe to tropical Africa. Of these, 40 forms, represented by 31 434 birds, were tick-infested. The bird hosts, numbering 1040 (3.31% …

Personal Health : Extension Circular 10-01-63
Nebraska 4-H Clubs: Historical Materials and Publications
Because health is affected by habits, this unit of the 4-H project is devoted to the study of personal health habits. You are expected to study your habits, determine ways for improvement and to correct some of your faults. Usually, it is advisable to change only a few faults at a time; rather than all of them at once. If you continuously work toward self improvement, you will be surprised at how fast your health habits improve.

Nebraska 4-H Clubs: Historical Materials and Publications
There are riders and there are horsemen. Every horseman is a rider but not every rider is a horseman.
The following material is presented to help every rider become a better horseman or horsewoman. It is basic material which can be applied to every type of riding with only slight modification. Use of the ideas expressed will develop the rider's balance and form. The trained horse will be responsive and alert to the rider's demands.
Skill in use of the following horsemanship methods requires practice. The reward will follow in more enjoyment in handling a better trained horse in a …

The Irretrievable Opportunity Of Serving The Young, Clifford M. Hardin
Sheldon Museum of Art: Catalogs and Publications
The Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery, dedicated on May 16, 1963, is more than another beautiful building given to a university by beneficent donors. It is a contribution to a total cultural development which is taking place in America and one especially discernible in the midland of our nation.
One of the outstanding architectural masterpieces of the Midwest, the Sheldon Gallery is a part of the University of Nebraska's newer emphasis on cultural opportunities for its students and staff and an influence on the cultural appreciation of our region. It gives strong evidence that artistic contributions come from an irrepressible spirit …
Beef Cattle Progress Report, E. F. Frolik, H. H. Kramer
Beef Cattle Progress Report, E. F. Frolik, H. H. Kramer
Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
Shipping fever is a respiratory disease "complex" of cattle. The disease causes extensive economic losses from death, loss of physical condition, inefficient feed utilization and treatment expense. The annual loss from this disease in the United States has been estimated to be $25,000,000.
In many respects shipping fever is similar to respiratory diseases of humans. It may occur in any season of the year, but is most common in the fall and early winter. Although any age animal may be infected recently weaned calves and feeder cattle which have just been moved from the range to feedlot are most susceptible.
Ground Water—The Problems Of Conservation And Interferences, Philip C. Sorenson
Ground Water—The Problems Of Conservation And Interferences, Philip C. Sorenson
Nebraska Law Review
In Nebraska, our measure of wealth is primarily in terms of water and soil, and the proper use and conservation of these resources is certain to assure us of prosperity now and for the future. This article is concerned with but one part of these resources—ground water. It can hardly be called, in the legal sense, a legal article, but it is hoped that that portion of the article setting forth a layman's explanation of the existing hydrologic and geologic conditions in Nebraska will be pertinent to the lawyer or legislator who is concerned with any aspect of the law …

Effects Of Management, Strain And Truck Shipment On Albumen Quality Of Eggs, J.L. Adams, J.L. Skinner
Effects Of Management, Strain And Truck Shipment On Albumen Quality Of Eggs, J.L. Adams, J.L. Skinner
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Very little has been reported on changes in quality of eggs during shipment. Gwin (1952) reported a study involving more than a billion eggs purchased by the Armed Forces of the United States. U.S. Grades were determined by candling and inspection by trained inspectors from the Army Veterinary Corps and the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Quality loss was shown to be related to time in transit, distance or miles in transit and seasonal influences. No data were reported as to the relation of varying physical conditions during transit or position effects within the rail cars. Adams and Milam (1960) studied …

Behavioral Isolating Mechanisms In The Family Anatidae, Paul A. Johnsgard
Behavioral Isolating Mechanisms In The Family Anatidae, Paul A. Johnsgard
Paul Johnsgard Collection
The ducks, geese, and swans present a host of species-recognition and isolating-mechanism problems that are equaled by few other groups of birds. As a family, the Anatidae have provided the greatest number of interspecific hybridization records of any avian family (see Gray, 1958, and Johnsgard, 1960a) both in captivity and under natural conditions. A surprising number of these hybrids have proved to be fertile, even when obtained between what appear to be well-marked genera. This remarkable capacity for hybridization indicates that isolating mechanisms must be operating effectively if species are to retain their integrity under natural conditions. Since genetic isolation …
Comparative Morphology In Nemic Phylogeny, Armand R. Maggenti
Comparative Morphology In Nemic Phylogeny, Armand R. Maggenti
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
In 1945 Simpson wrote: "Phylogeny cannot be observed. It is necessarily an inference from observations that bear on it, sometimes rather distantly, and that can usually be interpreted in more than one way." Certainly this applies to a study of nemic phylogeny where our reasoning is based upon degree of resemblance and subject to confusion by convergence and reversal. Many feel that, because fossil records are lacking, it is of little purpose to indulge in speculation on nemic phylogeny. Nemic taxonomy, however, requires such speculation when it is based upon comparative morphology. Our attempts in taxonomy are really an effort …

Gyrodactylus atratuli from the blacknose dace (Rhinichthys atratulus) and the pearl dace (Semotilus margarita) is compared with known species of Gyrodactylus from North American fishes and described as a new species. Gyrodactylus margaritae from the pearl dace (Semotilus margarita) is compared with known species of Gyrodactylus from North American fishes and described as a new species. The average number of G. atratuli per blacknose dace in the natural habitat is 7.8 (1 to 32) and in the laboratory at the same water temperature after 55 days in captivity, 5.4 (0 to 11). G. atratuli …

Studies On Neogogatea Kentuckiensis (Cable, 1935) N. Comb. (Trematoda: Strigeoidea: Cyathocotylidae), Glenn L. Hoffman, Clarence E. Dunbar
United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications
The cercaria of N. kentuckiensis was found in Anaplocamus dilatatus (Nitrocris d.) and Mudalia carinata. The metacercaria was found in all fishes examined from Opequon River, West Virginia, except Cottus bairdi which was also refractory to experimental infection. Two species of Centrarchidae, four of Cyprinidae, three of Salmonidae, Etheostoma flabellare, Platypoecilus maculatus, and Trichogaster trichopterus were experimentally infected. The development of the metacercari and cyst and effect on the fish are described. The histopathology initially consists of hemorrhage and muscle necrosis about the metacercaria, followed by reorganization and formation of a loose connective tissue cyst. The controversial adult names …
