Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Previous work at this station (Peo and Hudman, 1962) has shown that meat and bone scraps, when fed at levels from 5 to 10% of the total ration, significantly depress rate of gain of growing-finishing swine. Similar results have been reported by Bloss et al. (1953), Terrill et al. (1954), Meade and Teter (1957), and Becker and Jensen (1961).

Viral Infections Of Domestic Animals, George A. Young
Viral Infections Of Domestic Animals, George A. Young
School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications
There is a strong tendency in current research on mammalian virus diseases to concentrate on virus activity at a cellular or subcellular level. This trend is summarized adequately by Enders in relation to viral replication as follows: ','The large and ever-increasing volume of published experimental work on viral replication strikingly reveals the central position of this phenomenon in contemporary virological research. There are good reasons, both biological and practical, underlying this intensive effort to understand, i n detail, how a virus particle, without energy transforming apparatus of its own, manages to utilize the metabolic equipment of the cell to produce …

In a frontier community, animal life is cheap and held in low esteem. Thus it was that a frontiersman would shoot a bison for its tongue or an eagle for amusement. In America we inherited a particularly prejudiced and unsympathetic view of animals that may at times be dangerous or troublesome. From the days of the mountain men through the period of conquest and settlement of the West, incessant war was waged against the wolf, grizzly, cougar, and the lowly coyote, and even today in the remaining backwoods the maxim persists that the only good varmint is a dead one. …

The Seasonal Cycle Of Abundance Of Echinococcus Multilocularis In Naturally Infected Arctic Foxes, Francis H. Fay, Robert L. Rausch
The Seasonal Cycle Of Abundance Of Echinococcus Multilocularis In Naturally Infected Arctic Foxes, Francis H. Fay, Robert L. Rausch
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
In some preliminary work on the ecology of Echinococcus multilocularis (Rudolphi, 1801) on St. Lawrence Island, Alaska, Rausch and Schiller (1956. Parasitology, 46 (3 & 4): 395-419) noted that the percentage of arctic foxes, Alopex lagopus Linnaeus, harboring the adult cestodes seemed to vary annually in direct relation to the population density of tundra voles, Microtus oeconomus innuitus Merriam, the principal intermediate host. With the primary objective of examining this relationship in greater detail, an intensive, long-term ecologic investigation was begun on this island in 1955. Some of the results in the first 7 years are reported here.

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications
North American Trichodina from Carassius auratus, Lepomis cyanellus, L. macrochirus, Micropterus salmoides, and Rhinichthys atratulus have been studied by the silver-impregnation method and compared with European species. T. reticulata Hirschmann and Partsch, 1955, and T. (Foliella) subtilis Lorn, 1959, originally described from European goldfish, are herein recorded from North America also. T. fultoni Davis, 1947, from Lepomis cyanellus, Micropterus salmoides, and Rhinichthys atratulus is redescribed, and T. domerguei f. magna Lorn, 1961, described from European tench and gudgeon, is considered a synonym. A Trichodina sp. from the gills of Lepomis macrochirus is described; it is almost identical with …
Genotype And Variability In Dairy Lactation Records, L. Dale Van Vleck, G. R. Barr
Genotype And Variability In Dairy Lactation Records, L. Dale Van Vleck, G. R. Barr
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
In quantitative genetics, the variation of individuals within genetic groups is commonly attributed to environment. The assumption is then made that the environmental variances are similar from one group to another. Complications arise in the application of selection index theory when this assumption is not made. The results reported here indicate that in a population of dairy records, the environmental variance is not similar from one genetic group to another. Johnson (1945) and Wadell, Van Vleck and Henderson (1960) found similar results with fewer data.

The Magnetocardiogram A New Approach To The Fields Surrounding The Heart, R. A. Stratbucker, C. M. Hyde, S. E. Wixon
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications
Experiments have been conducted which reveal the existence of a detectable magnetic field associated with cardiac electrical activity. The relationship between the magnetic record and the electrocardiogram has been explored and it is shown that under certain conditions of axis orientation the voltage induced into a toroidal sensing element around the heart has the form of the first time derivative of the electrocardiogram. A formula based on Maxwell's equations has been developed to relate these two phenomona.
Poetic Justice In The Miller's Tale, Paul A. Olson
Poetic Justice In The Miller's Tale, Paul A. Olson
Department of English: Faculty Publications
F. N. Robinson notes that critics have observed, in Chaucer's tales of the Miller and the Reeve, "a kind of moral quality ... in the tendency to poetic justice."l If justice implies rules or guides for the administration of reward and pain, comic moral justice implies norms. Comic characters who are justly punished fall for a reason; otherwise, their discomfort is not just or particularly amusing. Nicholas, Absolon, and John are tumbled at the end of the Miller's Tale, and critics have seen them as getting their deserts and funny in their pain. However, the "rule of justice" which …
The Development In Vitro And In Vivo Of Fusion Of The Palatal Processes Of Rat Embryos, Thomas Moriarty, Sam Weinstein, R. D. Gibson
The Development In Vitro And In Vivo Of Fusion Of The Palatal Processes Of Rat Embryos, Thomas Moriarty, Sam Weinstein, R. D. Gibson
College of Dentistry: Faculty Publications
The congenital anomaly of cleft palate can now be reproduced by a variety of teratogenetic agents in a number of laboratory animals (Kalter & Warkany, 1959). Through the use of the induced cleft palate numerous studies have been directed toward detecting the developmental mishaps which create this defect. The work of Fraser et al. (1957) suggested that various positional factors of the developing palatal and facial structures may be the underlying cause for failure of palatal closure in mouse embryos. Walker & Fraser (1956) observed elastic fibers among the palatal processes of mouse embryos which they suggested might impart a …

Performance Of Alfalfas Under Five Management Systems, W. R. Kehr, E. C. Conard, M. A. Alexander, F. G. Owen
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins
This bulletin reports stands, forage yields, and other agronomic data on alfalfas of diverse origin or type tested under five management systems at Lincoln, Nebraska. Narrow-crowned and broad-crowned types were tested. The management systems involved non-irrigated alfalfa-bromegrass tests (a) continuously grazed with steers, (b) cut for hay, and (c) rotationally grazed with sheep; an irrigated alfalfa-bromegrass test rotationally grazed with dairy cattle; and irrigated tests of alfalfas in pure stands cut for hay.

A Review Of The Genus Echinococcus Rudolphi, 1801, Robert L. Rausch, George S. Nelson
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
1. The genus Echinococcus Rudolphi, 1801, is reviewed. The recorded measurements of all species are shown in tables, and their taxonomic status is discussed.
2. Three species of Echinococcus can be distinguished by morphological criteria and are considered valid: E. granulosus, E. multilocularis and E. oligarthrus. The status of E. felidis and E. patagonicus is uncertain, but both may be conspecific with E. granulosus. Six species are considered synonyms of E. granulosus: E. cameroni, E. intermedius, E. longimanubrius, E. lycaontis, E. minimus and E. ortleppi.

Echinococcus Infections In Man And Animals In Kenya, George S. Nelson, Robert L. Rausch
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
1. Hydatid cysts are found in more than 30 per cent of all cattle, sheep and goats in Kenya, but the disease is prevalent in man only in the semi-desert area of Turkana. Up to the time of the present investigation the life-cycle of the parasite in East Africa had not been studied, but it was suggested that wild carnivores, such as hyenas and jackals, might be the main hosts of the adult worms.
2. One hundred and forty-three carnivores, representing 23 species, have been examined. Echinococcus adults were found in 27 out of 43 domestic dogs (Canis familiaris …

Alveolar Hydatid Disease Of The Liver: Rationale And Technics Of Surgical Treatment, John T. West, F. J. Hillman, Robert L. Rausch
Alveolar Hydatid Disease Of The Liver: Rationale And Technics Of Surgical Treatment, John T. West, F. J. Hillman, Robert L. Rausch
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
Cestodes of the genus Echinococcus cause two distinct diseases: the well-known cystic hydatid disease found in stock-raising areas, caused by E. granulosus, and the more rare alveolar hydatid disease, which is limited to the northern hemisphere and is caused by the biologically and morphologically distinct E. multilocularis.
Eight cases of alveolar hydatid disease of the liver are reported from Alaska, including three patients who underwent hemihepatectomy for advanced lesions. Radical resection is concluded to be the only rational treatment for this otherwise progressive and fatal disease.
The Economics Of Classifying Farmland Between Alternative Uses, Roger H. Willsie
The Economics Of Classifying Farmland Between Alternative Uses, Roger H. Willsie
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins
At present some farm programs are aimed at reducing the acreage of land used for crop production. These programs have the objectives of reducing quantities of certain farm commodities and conserving land resources. By shifting land from the production of certain farm commodities to other commodities or to grass, total farm income may be raised and the costs of farm price support and storage programs reduced. In programs to shift land use a classification of land based on economic criteria would be useful. The primary concern of this study was with methods for identifying the economic margin between land uses; …
