Effects Of Thiabendazole Treatment On Weight Gains By Nebraska Range Cattle, D. L. Ferguson, D. A. Reynolds, M. J. Twiehaus
Effects Of Thiabendazole Treatment On Weight Gains By Nebraska Range Cattle, D. L. Ferguson, D. A. Reynolds, M. J. Twiehaus
School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications
The results of these studies indicate that a high percentage of Nebraska range cattle are infected with gastrointestinal parasites, but at a subclinical level of infection. However, significant differences were not observed in average daily gain between thiabendazole-treated range cattle and unmedicated controls in three of four field trials. In the three trials the average improvement in daily gain in animals receiving thiabendazole once averaged .01 lb greater than untreated controls. During a 120 day grazing period this improvement would not be sufficient to pay for the wormer or cost of additional labor.
The Biological Activity Of Phytotoxic Extracts From Corynebacterium Sepedonicum, Doran W. Pearson
The Biological Activity Of Phytotoxic Extracts From Corynebacterium Sepedonicum, Doran W. Pearson
Open Access Master's Theses (through 2010)
Isolation of a phytotoxin from the ring rot pathogen of potatoes, Corynebacterium sepedonicum, had previously been reported by Strobel (21). The first phase in our study was to investigate more extensively the general nature of this compound. The phytotoxin could possibly be a specific compound associated only with the ring rot pathogen. However, the possibility that the substance could be obtained from sources other than the bacterium had not been completely eliminated. In an attempt to answer this question, three extracts were purified and compared. First, compounds were isolated from a broth culture of bacteria in the manner described …
Development Of Cystine- And Cysteine-Rich Aleurone Grains In Bean Seeds, Kenneth P. Vogel, Donald R. Wood
Development Of Cystine- And Cysteine-Rich Aleurone Grains In Bean Seeds, Kenneth P. Vogel, Donald R. Wood
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Histochemical techniques were used to study aleurone grains in developing cotyledons of four cultivars of Phaseolus vulgaris L. The ninhydrin-Schiff’s reaction and the 2,2’-dihydroxy -- 6,6’ dinaphthyl-disulfide (DDD) method were used to identify total protein and proteinbound sulfhydryl and disulfide groups respectively. Aleurone grains of the subepidermal and adjacent mesophyll cells showed a more intense staining reaction to DDD 28 days after flower opening than the rest of the cotyledon, and the staining differentiation increased until the seed matured. The greatest concentrations of these deeply staining aleurone grains were in two areas, at the point where the embryo axis attaches …

Bacula Of Some Neotropical Bats, Randall E. Brown, Hugh H. Genoways, J. Knox Jones Jr.
University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers
Neotropical bats representing 56 species of five families were examined for presence or absence of a baculum. Members of the families Noctilionidae and Phyllostomatidae (sensu lato) have no os penis, but the bone was found in all species studied of Emballonuridae, Natalidae, and Vespertilionidae. The bacula of seven emballonurids, one natalid, and seven vespertilionids are briefly described and figured.

Antigenic Relationships In Seven Strains Of Tetrahymena, W.E. Engelhard, B.W. Mccashland
Papers in Microbiology
Tetrahymena, along with other genera of the family Frontoniidae, have been the subject of many scientific investigations concerning problems in protozoan physiology. Unfortunately in many instances, difficulty arises when attempting to identify properly the form that was used in the particular study. Until rather recently, relatively little had been accomplished by way of a comprehensive study of the interrelated genera, and of these very few have dealt with taxonomic problems serologically.
Observations On Sound Production In The Anatidae, Paul A. Johnsgard
Observations On Sound Production In The Anatidae, Paul A. Johnsgard
Paul Johnsgard Collection
It has been known for a long time that, among non-passerine birds, the Anatidae are remarkable for the diversity of specializations in the trachea and syrinx, associated with sound production. It has also been recognised that these variations have taxonomic significance (Heinroth 1911; Johnsgard 1961), but virtually no attempts have been made to correlate the complex tracheal structures with the sounds produced. Yet the group offers many fascinating problems such as the adaptive significance of the looping of the trachea, either outside the body cavity as in the Magpie Goose Anseranas semipalmata, or inside the sternum as in the …

Observations On Parasite-Host Relationships Of Echinococcus Multilocularis Leuckart, 1863, In North Dakota, Robert L. Rausch, S. H. Richards
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
Red foxes, Vulpes vulpes (Linnaeus), and small mammals were collected and examined during 1965-1969, to investigate parasite-host relationships of Echinococcus multilocularis Leuckart, 1863, in North Dakota. Comparative studies of this cestode were carried on concurrently through experimental infection of carnivores and rodents. In winter, red foxes in North Dakota exhibited high rates of infection of comparatively low intensity. Deer mice, Peromyscus maniculatus (Wagner), and voles, Microtus pennsylvanicus (Ord), were important intermediate hosts, but the larvae in deer mice produced fewer protoscolices. The strains of E. multilocularis from North Dakota and from St. Lawrence Island, Alaska, differ biologically, as indicated by …

The spore of Myxosoma cerebralis is redescribed and compared with that of a close relative, M. cartilaginis. M. cerebralis is smaller, with greater variability in size and shape. It possesses a mucous envelope whereas M. cartilaginis does not. The surface architecture of M. cerebralis, as seen with the scanning electron microscope, differs in possessing a conspicuous circumsutural groove, prominent polar filament pores, and a mucous envelope.

Additional Notes An Some Mammals From Eastern Nebraska, Hugh H. Genoways, Jerry R. Choate
University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers
Field studies concerned primarily with distribution of the short-tailed shrew, Blarina brevicauda, in eastern Nebraska have resulted in noteworthy records of several other species of small mammals. These field studies, which were supported by a grant from the Kansas Academy of Science, entailed extensive trapping of prairie habitats in Cass County, approximately 15 miles west of the Missouri River. In addition to the species discussed below, specimens of Reithrodontomys megalotis, Peromyscus maniculatus, P. leucopus, and Mus musculus were obtained at several localities. All catalogue numbers in the following accounts refer to specimens deposited in the Museum of Natural …

Orderly Production And Marketing In The Beef-Pork Sector, John E. Trierweiler, James B. Hassler
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins
This study will present economic models for analyzing temporal equilibrium positions for the beef-pork sector. The issues of spatial distribution, storage, and meat forms will not be directly analyzed. Grade and yield changes for various carcass classes will, however, be implied in the carrying costs of the animal. The models will be designed such that a number of different factors that affect the production and marketing of beef and pork can be analyzed simultaneously.

Management of any game or fur animal is an effort to insure an annual harvestable surplus. Much of this effort must be placed upon the land. The development and maintenance of habitat--the place where the animals can live--constitutes a large portion of this effort. The objective of habitat development is the increase and improvement of homes for wildlife and thereby the increase in numbers and improvement of the quality of the animals produced. Another important and continuous job of game management. is the annual check on populations--their ups and downs. Information on the numbers of animals is necessary if only …

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications
Hazards to marine and estuarine fauna associated with offshore drilling of oil and with transport of large quantities of oils via tankers are numerous and understandable. At present, there is a growing body of evidence on adverse effects to these organisms of crude oil (1) (2) (3) (4) (5) (6) (7) (8) (9) and chemical oil counteracting agents or dispersants (5) (6) (9) (10) (11) (12) (13) (14) (15) (16) (17). These effects are well summarized by Smith (18) and by Carthy and Arthur (19).

Increase In Size Of Eimeria Separata Oocysts During Patency, Donald W. Duszynski
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
Examinations of 18 consecutive fecal samples collected at 6-hr intervals from infected rats showed that oocysts increased in length and width by approximately 40% from the beginning to the end of the patent period. Unsporulated oocysts were first observed in the 3rd fecal collection, 84 to 90 hr post-inoculation (PI) and 100 of these measured 9.9 to 14.3 by 8.8 to 12.1 μ (mean 11.7 by 10.1). Patency ended with the 15th fecal collection, 156 to 162 hr PI, and 100 unsporulated oocysts from this sample measured 14.3 to 17.6 by 13.2 to 15.4 μ (mean 16.3 by 14.2). Despite …

Bird Control Seminars Proceedings
What I am going to say this afternoon is based entirely on field observations. As I said, this is a progress report. Maybe in another five or ten years I shall have enough data so that I can come back and show you something more detailed. The area with which we are dealing is the archipelago that runs across between Ottawa county, Ohio, and Ontario, Canada. I have not done any work on Point Pelee, but I have worked on Pelee Island, on all of the U.S. islands, and along the North shore around Sandusky bay. What I am considering …

Territorial Male Red-Winged Blackbird Distribution In Wood County, Ohio, M. I. Dyer
Bird Control Seminars Proceedings
Red-winged blackbirds (Agelaius phoneiceus) have been studied intensively in the United States and Canada by research biologists of the Bureau of Sport Fisheries and Wildlife for more than a decade. The detailed information on popula¬tion dynamics of the species that has been acquired is now being assembled and assessed. Definite patterns in the distribution of some of the eastern and mid-western populations have become apparent (Dyer et al., 1072; Power, 1069, 1970). A very complex distribution of territorial densities occurs in the western Lake Erie Basin of the U.S. and Canada (Dyer et al., 1972), where there are significant differences …

The Effects Of Ornitrol On Wild Populations Of Red-Winged Blackbirds And Grackles, Robert C. Fringer, Philip Granett
Bird Control Seminars Proceedings
For the past three years the New Jersey Department of Agriculture, in coop¬eration with the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station, has conducted field evaluations on the effects of reproductive suppressants on wild populations of red-winged blackbirds. These studies have been performed in conjunction with the North East 49 (a Federally sponsored regional project which presently has nine states in the North East and Ohio cooperating to develop means to combat bird damage to agricultural crops) regional project on control of bird depredations.
Field evaluations in 1968 and 1969 centered around the effects of TEM (tri-ethylene melamine) on the reproductive rates …

Photoperiodic Control Of The Testicular Cycle In The Eastern Red-Winged Blackbird, (Agelaius Phoeniceus Phoeniceus), Joel T. Kerlan
Bird Control Seminars Proceedings
The annual testicular cycle of many avian species which reside in temperate zones can be divided into two stages: the recrudescent stage and the regressive stage. The recrudescent stage is characterized by an increase in testis size which reflects the transition from an aspermatogenic condition to a spermatogenic condition. At the end of the breeding season, the birds enter the regressive stage. During this period a marked decrease in testis weight and volume indicates the return to an aspermatogenic condition. This stage is maintained until the next spring when presumably the increasing photoperiod induces gonadal recrudescence. If the birds are …

Bird Control Seminars Proceedings
In 1966, when the annual damage survey was initiated, Dr. C. R. Weaver, Statistician at the Ohio Agriculture Research and Development Center, Wooster, Ohio, drew up a sampling plan, balancing costs against desired precision. The plan included three combinations of fields to be sampled and stations per field for high damage areas, three combinations for moderate damage areas, and two combinations for light damage areas. Alternatives for the high damage area included (1) 497 fields with two stations per field (± .48), (2) 775 fields with two stations per field (± .26), and (3) 235 fields with ten stations per …

Nonbiolog1cal Alteration Of 3-Chloro P-Toluidine Hydrochloride (Drc-1339) In An Aqueous Solution, T. R. Darden, Robert G. Schwab
Bird Control Seminars Proceedings
The effectiveness of 3-chloro p-toluidine (DRC-1339) as an avicide, particular¬ly on the European starling, has been adequately demonstrated (DeCino, Cunningham, and Schafer, 1966; Schwab, 1965, 1966, and 1967). Methods of applying the com¬pound which have proved useful range from the standard baiting technique (Besser, Royall, and DeGrazio, 1967; Royall, DeCino, and Besser, 1967; West, 1968) to pos¬sible aerial application of the compound to roosting sites (Schwab, 1967). These methods, particularly the latter, inherently lead to widespread environmental exposure. As the chemical name implies, DRC-1339 is a chlorinated hydrocarbon. It thereby carries the stigma, whether justifiable or not, of environmental persistence …
