Experimental Hybridization Of The New World Quail (Odontophorinae), Paul A. Johnsgard
Experimental Hybridization Of The New World Quail (Odontophorinae), Paul A. Johnsgard
Papers in Ornithology
Hybridization experiments among six species of New World quail currently placed in four genera (Colinus, Callipepla, Lophortyx, and Oreortyx) involved the establishment of nine mixed-pair combinations. Seven of these combinations resulted in the production of F1 offspring, and individuals representing five intergeneric crosses have been reared to maturity. These F1 individuals exhibited a hatchability at least as high as occurred in parental species matings. In four of five intergeneric crosses, the hybrid females have laid smaller-than-normal eggs in spite of average or higher-than-average egg production, and a high proportion of eggs females laid have been …

Nebraska Droughts A Study Of Their Past Chronological And Spatial Extent With Implications For The Future, Merlin P. Lawson, Allan Reiss, Randy Phillips, Kenneth Livingston
Nebraska Droughts A Study Of Their Past Chronological And Spatial Extent With Implications For The Future, Merlin P. Lawson, Allan Reiss, Randy Phillips, Kenneth Livingston
Geography Program: Faculty Publications
The purpose of this study was to measure the spatial and temporal dimensions of drought occurrence in Nebraska. Such interpretations were facilitated by the computer generation of 468 maps showing monthly values of drought in Nebraska, from 1931 through 1969. While it was found that the frequency of consecutive drought is least in the central portion of the state, the intensity of drought is greatest in this region. Maps of correspondence which relate the areal correlation between rural population density and precipitation also indicate high positive relationships for central Nebraska. Interpretation of tree ring growth values using moving t-test plots …

An Ecological Rationale For The Natural Or Artificial Regulation Of Native Ungulates In Parks, Glen F. Cole
An Ecological Rationale For The Natural Or Artificial Regulation Of Native Ungulates In Parks, Glen F. Cole
United States National Park Service: Publications
The results from studies of both naturally and artificially regulated ungulate populations in four Rocky Mountain parks are reviewed. Study findings on population regulation processes, the role of predators, natural mortality and natality, and ungulate habitat and food relationships suggest that previous assumptions which were the basis for artificially regulating ungulates over-estimated the regulatory effects of predators and did not always distinguish natural from human-influenced conditions or changes. The suggested rationale for artificially regulating native ungulates in Rocky Mountain parks is: a human influence that causes unnatural successional trends by restricting ungulates from freeranging over an ecologically complete habitat (1) …
Effects Of Thiabendazole Treatment On Weight Gains By Nebraska Range Cattle, D. L. Ferguson, D. A. Reynolds, M. J. Twiehaus
Effects Of Thiabendazole Treatment On Weight Gains By Nebraska Range Cattle, D. L. Ferguson, D. A. Reynolds, M. J. Twiehaus
School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications
The results of these studies indicate that a high percentage of Nebraska range cattle are infected with gastrointestinal parasites, but at a subclinical level of infection. However, significant differences were not observed in average daily gain between thiabendazole-treated range cattle and unmedicated controls in three of four field trials. In the three trials the average improvement in daily gain in animals receiving thiabendazole once averaged .01 lb greater than untreated controls. During a 120 day grazing period this improvement would not be sufficient to pay for the wormer or cost of additional labor.
Cheating As A Function Of The Labeling Of Natural Arousal, Richard A. Dienstbier, Pamela Osbourne Hunter
Cheating As A Function Of The Labeling Of Natural Arousal, Richard A. Dienstbier, Pamela Osbourne Hunter
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
One hundred and five college freshmen were given one of two different side-effects lists associated with a placebo pill. In a “second” experiment, subjects experienced failure on a vocabulary test, supposedly predictive of college success, and received an opportunity to cheat on the test by changing answers. Although it was anticipated that all subjects who considered cheating would experience some arousal, it was predicted that those subjects told to expect drug-induced side effects related to sympathetic arousal would not label their experienced arousal as fear or guilt, and would cheat more than the subjects who anticipated benign side effects. Of …
