Ovulation, Fertility And Prenatal Mortality In Heifers Treated With Pmsg Or Porcine Fsh, D. B. Laster
Ovulation, Fertility And Prenatal Mortality In Heifers Treated With Pmsg Or Porcine Fsh, D. B. Laster
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Ovulation rate, fertilization rate and prenatal mortality were studied in yearling beef heifers treated with PMSG or FSH and in non-treated controls. Oestrus was synchronized in 50% of the animals in each treatment with an oral progestagen. The gonadotrophin injections were given during the normal oestrous cycle or during the progestagen-administration period. All heifers were inseminated 6 to 10 hr after observation of standing oestrus.
Ovulation rate and percentage fertility were determined in approximately a third of the animals in each treatment group. The reproductive tracts of the remaining animals were examined 81 to 104 days after insemination for number …
A Paleo-Indian Bison Kill In The Panhandle Of Nebraska, Larry D. Agenbroad
A Paleo-Indian Bison Kill In The Panhandle Of Nebraska, Larry D. Agenbroad
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
Initial excavation of the Hudson-Meng Paleo-Indian site was begun in September, 1971. Work by volunteer labor continued until mid-November when the site was closed because of winter storms and frozen ground. The discovery of an unusually large Scottsbluff point, in situ in the ribs of one of the animals indicates association of the Plano Complex and extinct bison. The bone bed is a single occupation event. representing a butchering floor activity near the actual kill site. Absence of skull fragments and lower long bones indicate quartering or halving the animals at the kill with transfer to the butcher area. Testing …
Nitrate And Phosphate Content Of Ground And Surface Waters Of The White River Drainage, Northwest Nebraska, Charles E. Baker
Nitrate And Phosphate Content Of Ground And Surface Waters Of The White River Drainage, Northwest Nebraska, Charles E. Baker
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
Selected stream and ground water sites in the White River Drainage Basin were sampled for phosphate and nitrate content. The sampling procedure was designed to elucidate the impact of each tributary drainage area on water quality of the White River.
Concentration of nitrates found in surface waters was 5.7 ͞+ l. 7 5 ppm (͞x ± sd), while that of phosphates was 0.67 ± 0.33 ppm. Ground water contained higher concentrations of both contaminants, 8.81 ± 0.66 ppm for nitrates and 0.82 ± 0.20ppm for phosphates. The White River increased in nitrate content at each downstream sampling site. Values ranged …
Eutrophication Of Small Reservoirs In Eastern Nebraska, Mark J. Hammer, Gary L. Hergemader
Eutrophication Of Small Reservoirs In Eastern Nebraska, Mark J. Hammer, Gary L. Hergemader
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
Numerous small reservoirs constructed in Nebraska are used for recreation and many more are being planned. While these impoundments seemingly alleviate the long standing need for recreational waters, many existing impoundments exhibit symptoms of accelerated eutrophication after only a few years of existence. It is natural that such lakes, impounding nutrient-rich water, should be productive and generate nuisances that interfere with projected recreational uses. Unfortunately, neither this fact nor the lack of feasible methods for nutrient control were perceived prior to providing recreational facilities at the reservoir sites.
Rates of eutrophication, nutrient sources, and eutrophication control have been examined in …

Quantitative Analysis Of Swine Chromosomes (Mammalia: Suiidae), J.M. Rary, R.L. Murphree
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
The primary objectives of this study were: (1) to provide quantitative descriptions of the chromosomes of the domestic swine (Sus scrota: 2n=38), the European wild swine (2n=36) and the domestic-European wild hybrid (2n=37); and (2) to define chromosomal differences between the three karyotypes.
The diploid (2n) chromosome number of the domestic swine has been shown to be 38 (Ruddle, 1961; Makina et al., 1962; McConnell et al., 1963). The European wild swine of the Tellico Wildlife Management Area of Tennessee has been shown to have a diploid chromosome number of 36 (Rary et al., 1968). European …
Cognitive Egocentricity Of The Child Within Piagetian Developmental Theory, Violet Kalyan-Masih
Cognitive Egocentricity Of The Child Within Piagetian Developmental Theory, Violet Kalyan-Masih
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
In popular usage of the term, an egocentric person is a conceited and boastful individual who is preoccupied with his own self-importance. There is, however, a fundamental difference between the cognitive egocentricity of a child as defined by Piaget, and the egocentricity of an adult as is commonly understood. A child is egocentric because he cannot take someone else's point of view; an adult is egocentric because he will not - in one case, it is cognitive inability; in the other, social insensitivity. "Cognitive egocentrism," according to Piaget, “…stems from a lack of differentiation between one's own point of view …
Notes Regarding Skull Characteristics Of Oxetocyon Cuspidatus Green, (Mammalia, Canidae), Lloyd Tanner
Notes Regarding Skull Characteristics Of Oxetocyon Cuspidatus Green, (Mammalia, Canidae), Lloyd Tanner
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
The original description for the genus and species of the small canid, Oxetocyon Cuspidatus Green was propsed on a single upper molar from the Oligocene of South Dakota. The teeth contained in the skull present evidence, which would suggest that Oxetocyon Cuspidatus Green from late Oligocene deposits is most closely related to the canids.

History of Exploration
The Hudson-Meng archaeological site (Nebraska No. 25 SX 115) is located in northwestern Sioux County, Nebraska. It occurs in a drainage from a still-active spring on the property of Mr. Albert Meng. Preliminary excavation was begun in the fall of 1968 by Dr. Larry D. Agenbroad of Chadron State College after the site was brought to his attention by Mr. Bill Hudson, a local amateur archaeologist. Large scale excavation was begun in the spring of 1971 by volunteer students and faculty from Chadron State College.

Lice Of Public Health Importance And Their Control, Harry D. Pratt, Kent S. Littig
Lice Of Public Health Importance And Their Control, Harry D. Pratt, Kent S. Littig
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Library Materials
Lice have been intimately associated with man for centuries. Infestations with lice occur today in the United States and many other countries despite great efforts to maintain high standards of public health. Public health agencies are often called upon if infestations include or expose large groups of people, particularly those in public institutions such as schools, jails, hospitals, or homes for the aged.
The three sucking lice that infest humans are: the body louse (Pedlculus humanus humanus), the head louse (Pediculus humanus capitis), and the crab louse (Pthirus pubis). The body louse is the …

Two Species Of Bats New To The Fauna Of Trinidad, Hugh H. Genoways, Robert J. Baker, R. S. Loregnard
University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers
Goodwin and Greenhall (1961) in their monograph of the bats of Trinidad and Tobago recorded 58 species of chiropterans from the island of Trinidad. In two subsequent publications (Goodwin and Greenhall, 1962, 1964) these authors recorded Mesophylla macconnelli, Prornops nasutus, and Phylloderma stenops from Trinidad bringing the number of species known from the island to 61. In August 1967, one of us (R. J. Baker) and Larry Deaven netted bats on Trinidad in connection with ongoing studies of chiropteran karyology, and obtained two species not previously recorded.

Characterization Of A Fatty Acid Synthetase From Corynebacterium Diphtheriae, Herman W. Knoche, Kirston E. Koths
Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications
A fatty acid synthetase from Corynebacterium diphtheriae has been purified to a specific activity of 450 nmoles of malonyl coenzyme A incorporated per min per mg. The enzyme is optimally active in 0.5 M phosphate buffer. C. diphtheriae appears to be the most primitive organism having a multienzyme complex for fatty acid synthesis.

Palmityl Coenzyme A Inhibition Of Fatty Acid Synthesis, Herman Knoche, Theodore W. Esders, Kirston Koths, Konrad Bloch
Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications
The effects of acyl-CoA derivatives (C8 to C20) on the activity
of the fatty acid synthetases from yeast and Corynebacterium
diphtheriae have been examined. Both enzyme
systems are inhibited by the longer chain acyl thioesters
(C16 to C20) and protected against this inhibition by bovine
serum albumin (BSA). Identical relief from acyl-CoA inhibition
is provided by the 6-0-methylglucose-containing
lipopolysaccharide (MGLP), from Mycobacterium phlei. It
is shown that MGLP forms a stable complex with palmitylCoA.
This interaction accounts for the BSA-like effects of
the polysaccharide. BSA and MGLP have two further effects
on the fatty …
Anthelmintics For Nematode Parasites Of Fish: Ii. Aqueous Anthelmintic Bath Treatments Using Diethyl 2-Chlorovinyl Phosphate And 2,2 Dichlorovinyl Dimethyl Phosphate For Control Of Sterliadochona Pedispicula In Salmo Gairdnerii, A. R. Maggenti
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
The toxicity of diethyl 2-chlorovinyl phosphate (SD1836) and 2,2 dichlorovinyl dimethyl phosphate (DDVP) was tested as an "in-water" treatment of rainbow trout and in vitro against the internal nematode parasite of fish, Sterliadochona peclispicula. As an "in-water" anthelmintic treatment SD1836 was 100% effective at concentrations of 25 fL liters/liter for 24 hr and 5 μ liters/liter for 72 hr; no toxic effects to rainbow trout were noted with these treatments.

Plagioporus Hypentelii Sp. N. (Trematoda: Opecoelidae) From The Hogsucker, Hypentelium Nigricans (Lesueur) (Osteichthys: Catostomidae), Sherman S. Hendrix
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
Plagioporus hypentelii sp. n. (Trematoda: Opecoelidae) is described from the intestine of the hogsucker, Hypentelium nigricans (LeSueur), in streams of Adams County, Pennsylvania. It most closely resembles P. serotinus Stafford, 1904, but differs from it chiefly in its less elongate shape, smaller size, smaller testes, ovary, and eggs, straight cirrus sac, in hosts and geographic location of the hosts.
Proximate And Ultimate Determinants Of Clutch Size In Anatidae, Paul A. Johnsgard
Proximate And Ultimate Determinants Of Clutch Size In Anatidae, Paul A. Johnsgard
Paul Johnsgard Collection
In a stimulating analysis, Lack (1967, 1968a) reviewed waterfowl clutch size and egg size data, and concluded that interspecific variations in average clutch size are generally inversely related to those of relative egg size. Thus, he suggested that the average clutch size of each waterfowl species has evolved in relation to the average availability of food to the female around the time of nesting. He hypothesized that in waterfowl, relatively large eggs have probably evolved to provide the newly-hatched young with a large food supply (an idea he subsequently (1968b) questioned) or with an adequate insulating layer of fat. He …

Res Ipsa Loquitur: Pleading Acts Of Negligence: Nuclear Corp. Of America V. Lang, 338 F. Supp. 914 (D. Neb. 1972), Stephen C. Johnson
Nebraska Law Review
The doctrine of res ipsa loquitur has been a source of confusion to the courts since its inception in the famous case of Byrne v. Boadle, where a barrel of flour rolled out of a warehouse window and injured a passing pedestrian. From its birth to the present, the doctrine has been riddled with various nuances concerning both its application and effect. Despite a lack of uniformity among the courts with respect to its use, there has been general agreement that proper analysis of the doctrine presents two considerations. First, whether the particular facts and circumstances necessary to invoke …
Ritual Appraisement In White Singles’ Bars: From A Woman’S Perspective, Mary Jo Deegan
Ritual Appraisement In White Singles’ Bars: From A Woman’S Perspective, Mary Jo Deegan
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
Singles bars provide a unique opportunity to observe sexual norms and mores in action. This set of expectations is particularly visible in these spots because they accentuate the mobility and "meat market" aspects of selection of dating partners. The meat market bargaining process is an important part of this ritual introduction, and it is a major organizing concept in the analysis.

Bats Of Jalisco, México, Larry C. Watkins, J. Knox Jones Jr., Hugh H. Genoways
University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers
The fauna and flora of the Mexican state of Jalisco have received the much deserved attention of a number of biologists in recent years. Nevertheless, few comprehensive accounts of the biota of this interesting and physiographically diverse area have been published. In the period from 1949 to 1969, field representatives of the Museum of Natural History at the University of Kansas collected vertebrates in Jalisco. Among the specimens obtained from the state, the mammalian fauna of which never has been treated as a unit previously, were approximately 3000 bats, which form the primary basis for this report. In addition to …

English abstract: The cytogenetic characteristics of the varying lemming, Dicrostonyx torquatus stevensoni, (2n = 34), were investigated, and diploid chromosomal numbers were reported for four other nominal subspecies (exsul, nelsoni, richardsoni, and rubricatus) of the torquatus-group in North America. The diploid complements ranged from 30 to 44 chromosomes, and the fundamental number from 50 to 55. Chromosomal polymorphism was observed in all forms. In cross-breeding experiments, the mating of F1 progeny was not productive. The findings support the zoogeographic concept that populations of Dicrostonyx became fragmented or displaced southward during Würm time, with …

Simultaneous Selection For Milk And Beef Production Among Holstein-Friesians, L. L. Calo, R. E. Mcdowell, L. Dale Van Vleck, P. D. Miller
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
A selection index combining milk and beef production traits, such that progress in aggregate economic value is maximized, was constructed for Holstein bulls. The index for milk was IM = 1.11X1 + .997X2 while the index for beef trait was IB = .008X1 + .619X2 where X1 is the daughters' average lactation yield (kg) and X2, bulls' body weight at 15 mo (kg).
The relative genetic progress from simultaneous selection for milk and beef traits with different emphasis was estimated. Expected genetic progress in beef production (body weight at 15 mo) …

Mammals From Southwestern North Dakota, Hugh H. Genoways, J. Knox Jones Jr.
University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers
The distribution of the mammals in the southwestern part of North Dakota and their ecological and taxonomic relationships have not been well documented. In addition to Vernon Bailey's (1927) survey of mammals of the state, based primarily upon field work conducted between 1912 and 1916, the only other principal studies dealing with the mammalian fauna of southwestern North Dakota were a preliminary report of the mammals of the state by Bailey et al. (1914) and the publication by J.A. Allen (1875) on mammals taken by the expedition that surveyed a route for the North Pacific Railway. Our studies, which were …
The Elusive Tree Quails Of Mexico, Paul A. Johnsgard
The Elusive Tree Quails Of Mexico, Paul A. Johnsgard
Paul Johnsgard Collection
The three species of tree quails or wood-partridges, genus Dendrortyx, of Mexico and Central America are all surprisingly large — weighing up to one pound in the case of the largest species — and have relatively long tails that result in an overall body length of from 9 to 16 inches. Their beaks are large and heavy, and are related to their abilities to tear apart and consume fruits, flower buds, and similar materials.
Three species of tree quails have been described, all of which occur in moist montane forests, especially the mist-shrouded cloud forests that occur at elevations …

Importance Of Different Levels Of Potassium In The Diet On Whole-Body 40K Count And Muscle And Blood Potassium , R. K. Johnson, L. E. Walters, J. V. Whiteman
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
The influence of three levels (1.31, 1.03 T and 0.29% K) of dietary potassium on 40K count, blood serum and muscle tissue potassium was determined using 36 crossbred Angus-Hereford steers. A balanced 3 x 3 latin square experimental design was utilized which allowed estimates of carry-over effects of diets to be evaluated. Diets were fed for 2-week periods and appropriate samples and measurements were collected at 14-day intervals over a 60-day period. Measurements were made on steers unshrunk and after 24 hr. off feed and water. Carry-over effect means were nonsignificant for each trait. The steers on the high …
