Globalization In Fashion: Organizational Strategies For Cultural Adaptation While Maintaining Core Identity, Karina Klein Jan 2025

Globalization In Fashion: Organizational Strategies For Cultural Adaptation While Maintaining Core Identity, Karina Klein

Scripps Senior Theses

This thesis examines how fashion brands can effectively maintain their brand identity while expanding into international markets with diverse cultural landscapes. Addressing the fundamental tension between standardization and localization in global fashion marketing, this research investigates when brands should maintain consistent approaches versus adapting to local cultural contexts. Through a comprehensive literature review of global branding theory, historical patterns of fashion globalization, and cultural dimensions affecting fashion consumption, the study establishes foundational principles for strategic international expansion. The research presents Burberry's successful entry into the Chinese market as a case study, analyzing how the luxury brand effectively balanced standardization of …

Selling Egg-Cellence: An Exploration Of Commercial Oocyte Donation And Genetic Determinism In 21st Century America, Abigail C. Oswald Jan 2025

Selling Egg-Cellence: An Exploration Of Commercial Oocyte Donation And Genetic Determinism In 21st Century America, Abigail C. Oswald

Scripps Senior Theses

This thesis examines the impact of genetic determinism on commercial egg donation in the United States. Through critical analysis of social media advertisements, online forums, and interviews, it argues that reductionist, genetically deterministic thinking drives the commodification of oocytes. Fertility agencies exploit assumptions about heritable traits (health, ethnicity, intelligence) to market "desirable" donors, influencing intended parents' choices and compensation hierarchies. Then the research explores how these same ideas shape perceptions of familial closeness in donor-conceived individuals and their parents, revealing mixed feelings surrounding genetic ties. This study highlights the complex interplay of biology, technology, and social constructs in defining family …

Ai Art And U.S. Copyright Decisions: What The U.S. Can Do Differently Than China And The E.U. To Efficiently Promote Balance Between Ai Innovation And Copyright Regulation, Adam Pycior Jan 2025

Ai Art And U.S. Copyright Decisions: What The U.S. Can Do Differently Than China And The E.U. To Efficiently Promote Balance Between Ai Innovation And Copyright Regulation, Adam Pycior

Loyola University Chicago International Law Review

The rapid development of Artificial Intelligence ("Al") in recent years has spurred a plethora of discussions concerning ethical boundaries, government regulations, and more. Thaler v. Perlmutter highlights a unique one: the challenging question of if, and how, AI generated artworks may be copyrightable. The court denied copyright to plaintiff Stephen Thaler's work "A Recent Entrance to Paradise" generated by his AI system, "The Creativity Machine," holding that autonomously generated works cannot be copyrighted under the existing precedent. However, the court failed to answer, though it acknowledged, the pressing question as to the degree of human input necessary to copyright such …

Cold Water Immersion: Communal Intimacy And Embodied Wellness, Clara R. Louden Jan 2025

Cold Water Immersion: Communal Intimacy And Embodied Wellness, Clara R. Louden

Scripps Senior Theses

On the shores of Lake Superior, many residents of Duluth engage in cold water immersion, or as many call it, "dipping." Through the lenses of embodied experience, magical language and modes of storytelling, and communal intimacy, dipping emerges as a uniquely bonding practice. Dippers cite cold water immersion as an immune-boosting ritual, drawing on biomedical and non-biomedical conceptions of health. Immersion in cold water, especially in nature, requires a strong sense of communal trust. By deliberately encountering danger in their day to day lives, dippers' relationships with each other and with the lake often deepen over time, hinging on the …

Constructing Bodies Of Subversion And Resistance: The Carceral Quarantine Of Hiv-Positive Haitian Refugees At Guantanamo Bay Under U.S. Imperialism, Isabelle E. Oringer Jan 2025

Constructing Bodies Of Subversion And Resistance: The Carceral Quarantine Of Hiv-Positive Haitian Refugees At Guantanamo Bay Under U.S. Imperialism, Isabelle E. Oringer

Scripps Senior Theses

This thesis investigates the detention of HIV-positive Haitian refugees at Guantánamo Bay in the early 1990s as a case study of medicalized racism and U.S. imperialism. It explores how U.S. public health policy, immigration law, and Cold War-era foreign interventions converged to criminalize and confine Black Haitian bodies, constructing them as threats to national security and public health. By analyzing primary testimonies and media coverage alongside the works of scholars such as Paul Farmer and Naomi Paik, the project reveals how racialized conceptions of disease and subversion informed discriminatory practices that disproportionately targeted Haitian refugees. Furthermore, it examines how the …

Influencias Intergeneracionales De La Italianidad En La Vida Doméstica Y En La Esfera Pública De Argentina: Un Análisis De La Lingüística, La Comida Y La Identidad, Sage A. Wong-Davies Jan 2025

Influencias Intergeneracionales De La Italianidad En La Vida Doméstica Y En La Esfera Pública De Argentina: Un Análisis De La Lingüística, La Comida Y La Identidad, Sage A. Wong-Davies

Scripps Senior Theses

In Argentina there are many people of Italian heritage due to the large wave of Italian immigration at the end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th century. Through personal interviews and analyses of preexisting research, this thesis examines how the Italian influence has become incorporated in Argentinian culture on a national level and in the family culture of Argentinians with Italian heritage. This thesis specifically considers the Italian influence in Argentina through the lenses of linguistics and language, food, and identity. It determines that “italianidad” is very integrated in Argentinian culture in all of these …

Recovering Twice: An Autoethnographic Account Of Healing As An Injured Athlete, Aleksa Allen Jan 2025

Recovering Twice: An Autoethnographic Account Of Healing As An Injured Athlete, Aleksa Allen

Master of Liberal Studies Theses

This autoethnographic thesis explores the deeply personal and culturally embedded experience of injury, recovery, and identity as a collegiate athlete. It foregrounds the psychological toll of physical injury, the silence around disordered eating in athletics, and the gendered dynamics that render certain injuries and bodies invisible. This narrative is not meant to stand in for every athlete’s experience, but to ask what one individual experience reveals about the broader systems collegiate athletes inhabit. These systems are shaped by performance-based expectations, disposability, and silence. Drawing from lived experience, I trace my own trajectory as an athlete through the tightrope of recruitment, …

Behavioral Observations And Analysis Of Twix: The Cape Porcupine At The Lake Superior Zoo, Erin Davidson Jan 2025

Behavioral Observations And Analysis Of Twix: The Cape Porcupine At The Lake Superior Zoo, Erin Davidson

Scripps Senior Theses

The three main goals of zoos are outlined as: education, conservation, and research. In our modern world, the focus of zoos has shifted away from simply housing animals, and towards how we can best promote proper animal welfare for individuals in human care. Animal welfare can be defined as the “mental health” of non-human species of fauna, and is greatly influenced by the stressors within the environment, as well as the option of choosing how to interact with and respond to the environment. Animals housed in zoos are presented with unique stressors that they often do not choose to experience, …

Assessing The Effects Of Wildfire Season Pm2.5 Exposure And Environmental Variables On Breeding Season Avian Body Condition, Cira Seyer-Ochi Jan 2025

Assessing The Effects Of Wildfire Season Pm2.5 Exposure And Environmental Variables On Breeding Season Avian Body Condition, Cira Seyer-Ochi

Scripps Senior Theses

The increasing frequency and intensity of wildfires pose growing threats to wildlife, yet the indirect effects of wildfire smoke on avian populations remain largely unstudied. This exploratory study provides an initial assessment of how particulate matter 2.5 (PM2.5) associated with smoke pollution from the 2017 California wildfire season, in conjunction with precipitation and habitat type, influences the body condition of four resident bird species during the 2018 breeding season. Using bird banding data from 29 Monitoring Avian Productivity and Survivorship (MAPS) stations, I assessed the potential interactions between PM2.5 concentrations, precipitation, and habitat type with body condition for Song Sparrows …

Characterization Of Dietary And Hormonal Influences On Renal Sodium Transporters And Channels In Rodent Models, Evelyn Chan Jan 2025

Characterization Of Dietary And Hormonal Influences On Renal Sodium Transporters And Channels In Rodent Models, Evelyn Chan

Scripps Senior Theses

Within kidneys, a diverse array of renal epithelial cells works to maintain electrolyte and water balance to regulate blood pressure and pH. These cells contain varying types of sodium transporters that adjust sodium reabsorption according to the body’s needs. Previous studies have observed sex-specific differences in renal sodium transporter regulation, which are thought to optimize reproduction in females. In this study, we performed high resolution microscopy and detailed characterization of cell type-specific expression and localization of major sodium transporters and channels in rodents in response to dietary and hormonal influences. Specifically, we examined the impact of dietary salt intake and …

Analyzing The Portrayal Of The Atomic Bombs Dropped On Hiroshima And Nagasaki In Textbooks And Non-Profit Curriculum Sources, Kason Kendall Jan 2025

Analyzing The Portrayal Of The Atomic Bombs Dropped On Hiroshima And Nagasaki In Textbooks And Non-Profit Curriculum Sources, Kason Kendall

Teacher Education and Leadership Student Research

Some veteran history teachers I have met over the years have explained that early in their careers they were encouraged to teach from the textbook. One teacher indicated this has been the dominant mode of teaching for the large portion of her career (J. Baker, personal communication, July 11, 2023). This can be problematic if textbooks do not contain multiple perspectives of events. Keith Crawford and Stuart Foster (2007) write that nations often do not tell the full truth about themselves. U.S. History curriculum is often missing a complete and accurate representation of historical events (Anyon, 1979). Textbooks often support …

Directing The Temperamentals: Exploring Identity, Activism, And Historical Resonance In Lgbtq+ Theater, Eric E. Parrish

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

This thesis presents an in-depth analysis and directorial approach to Jon Marans' play, The Temperamentals, which dramatizes the early struggles of the LGBTQ+ rights movement in 1950s America. The production focuses on the personal and political dynamics surrounding the formation of the Mattachine Society, one of the first sustained gay rights organizations in the United States, through the lives of its co-founders, Harry Hay and Rudi Gernreich. This analysis explores the relevance of the plays' themes in the contemporary socio-political landscape by exploring the interaction of personal identity, societal repression, and collective activism depicted in the play. These chapters detail …

Hölderlin's Naturalism: Nature And Human Agency After Kant, Saurabh Saurendra Pal Jan 2025

Hölderlin's Naturalism: Nature And Human Agency After Kant, Saurabh Saurendra Pal

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

This dissertation focuses on Friedrich Hölderlin’s engagement with human self-relating to the natural world in the wake of Kantian rethinking of the human being as a normative subject. While it has often been noted that following the Pantheism controversy of the 1780s, a generation of poets and thinkers looked towards Spinozistic monism to overcome the dualisms and limitations of Kant’s Copernican revolution, the relevance of this development to moral concerns has received less consideration. This study proposes that the recurrent theme of “unification with nature” in Hölderlin’s literary and theoretical writings signifies a yearning for moral community¬—rather than metaphysical union—with …

Abolition In Color: Written And Oral Narratives Of Struggle In Black Latin America, Karina Alexandra Lopez Jan 2025

Abolition In Color: Written And Oral Narratives Of Struggle In Black Latin America, Karina Alexandra Lopez

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

This dissertation examines the different types of anti-slavery narratives written by people of Afro-descended writers in Cuba and Brazil at the end of the nineteenth century. During this time, literature acted as propaganda to further the spread of abolitionist ideas and ultimately end the abhorrent institution. While scholarship has tended to focus on the texts written by white abolitionists, this study places particular focus on the short stories and novels written by writers of color and points out the ways in which these texts not only contributed to swaying public opinion towards abolition, but also looked towards both the past …

Trauma-Informed Judicial Practice Meets Therapeutic Jurisprudence: Compassionate Written Judgments In Child Protection Cases, Shelley Kierstead Jan 2025

Trauma-Informed Judicial Practice Meets Therapeutic Jurisprudence: Compassionate Written Judgments In Child Protection Cases, Shelley Kierstead

All Papers

Society has become acutely aware that trauma arises from many life events and manifests in a range of physical and psychological symptoms. The legal community is increasingly recognizing that clients living with trauma effects would be much better served with trauma-informed services. While much of the emerging literature in the legal field focuses on lawyers’ work, there is growing recognition that judges can also play a role in responding effectively to trauma.

In child protection cases, trauma frequently exists at different yet related levels – for the child who is the subject of protection proceedings, and for one or more …

An International Law Of The Emotions, Emily Kidd White Jan 2025

An International Law Of The Emotions, Emily Kidd White

All Papers

Talk of the emotional or affective turn in international law is relatively recent though it tracks and echoes several other critical methods movements, including the turn to history, in the study of international law and, so too, a two-decade long wave of law and emotions research in several domestic legal systems. The affective turn in international law in several instances aims to critique a post-Cold War optimism that held out the promise that a rules and reason-based international order would work to abate war, and secure peace, prosperity and efficient capital flows. As outlined by the editors of this volume …

Freedom Of Peaceful Assembly Under Section 2(C) Of The Charter: A Call For Action, Jamie Cameron Jan 2025

Freedom Of Peaceful Assembly Under Section 2(C) Of The Charter: A Call For Action, Jamie Cameron

All Papers

“A Call for Action” builds on the author’s previous work on s.2(c) for the Rouleau Commission (“Freedom of Assembly and Section 2(c) of the Charter”; available on SSRN and Osgoode Digital Commons). There is no framework of legality under the Charter for the scope and limits of peaceful assembly, and this follow-up paper begins the task of filling that gap. It addresses the relationship between s.2(b) and s.2(c), critiquing the “factual matrix principle” for subsuming issues freedom of assembly into freedom of expression, and explaining that assembly is a distinctive collective entitlement that is spatial and performative in nature. …

What Is The Standard Of Review For (Mixed) Constitutional Questions?, Anthony R. Sangiuliano, Mark Friedman Jan 2025

What Is The Standard Of Review For (Mixed) Constitutional Questions?, Anthony R. Sangiuliano, Mark Friedman

All Papers

According to the framework for selecting the standard of review in civil appeals developed in Housen v Nikolaisen, questions of mixed fact and law are reviewed on a standard of palpable and overriding error. This framework applies to allegations that a statute is constitutionally invalid. However, in Société des casinos du Québec inc v Association des cadres de la Société des casinos du Québec, the Supreme Court held that when a statute is challenged as unconstitutional before an administrative tribunal, questions of mixed fact and law are subject to a correctness standard on judicial review as an exception to the …

Indigenous Governance And The Charter: What Can Indigenous Constitutionalism Offer?, Karen Drake Jan 2025

Indigenous Governance And The Charter: What Can Indigenous Constitutionalism Offer?, Karen Drake

All Papers

The question of whether the Charter should apply to Indigenous governance is often presented in terms of a contest between Indigenous self-determination and protections for vulnerable individuals. The two judgments applying the Charter in the Supreme Court of Canada’s decision in Dickson v. Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation exemplify this dichotomy. This approach, however, reflects a false dilemma; it overlooks Indigenous constitutionalism’s ability to resolve the kinds of issues that the Charter aims to resolve, but without sacrificing Indigenous self-determination. To illustrate this point, this article applies one form of Indigenous constitutionalism— Anishinaabe constitutionalism grounded within an Anishinaabe lifeworld—to the fact …

Decoding Heterogeneity In Human Aging: Omic Biomarkers Of Age-Related Disorders, Yaroslav Markov Jan 2025

Decoding Heterogeneity In Human Aging: Omic Biomarkers Of Age-Related Disorders, Yaroslav Markov

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Biological aging unfolds along multiple heterogeneous trajectories shaped by both acquired molecular drift and inherited genetic variation. This dissertation investigates two complementary axes of aging heterogeneity: (1) stochastic, individually acquired epigenomic deviations; and (2) genotype-defined risk exemplified by the APOEε4 allele, the strongest genetic determinant of late-onset Alzheimer’s disease (AD).

1) Stochastic Epigenetic Mutation Detection

We developed SEMdetectR, a robust R-based pipeline for identifying and quantifying stochastic epigenetic mutations (SEMs) -- rare, outlier CpG methylation events that accumulate idiosyncratically with age. Using technical replicates from three independent cohorts, we uncovered previous methodological flaws undermining SEM reliability and trained a machine …

Social Factors Variably Predict Salivary Cortisol Levels In Tufted Capuchins, Aiko Amano Jan 2025

Social Factors Variably Predict Salivary Cortisol Levels In Tufted Capuchins, Aiko Amano

Master’s Theses

Glucocorticoids (GCs) have become a prime focus in studies involving the relationship between psychosocial factors and physiology. For social animals, determining the social variables that relate to both GC release and buffering can help tease apart the complex interplay between the psychological and physiological dynamics of individuals and their communities. A 2019 study found relationships between social factors and hair cortisol in a group of socially housed tufted capuchin monkeys in which social support correlated negatively with cortisol levels while received aggression correlated positively. The present study examined the relationships between similar social measures and salivary cortisol in the same …
