Observations On Some Natural-Focal Zoonoses In Alaska, Robert L. Rausch
Observations On Some Natural-Focal Zoonoses In Alaska, Robert L. Rausch
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
In Alaska, as in arctic and subarctic Eurasia, important natural-focal zoonoses are rabies, brucellosis, tularemia, trichinosis, alveolar hydatid disease, cystic hydatid disease, and diphyllobothriasis. Most frequently affected are aboriginal peoples in villages within biocenoses that include the natural parasite-host assemblages. Pathogens are transmitted to man from wild animals and from dogs, which are important as synanthropic hosts. The prevalence and rate of transmission of certain pathogens in natural foci are related to the numerical density of small mammals, especially rodents, which may themselves be involved as hosts, and on which the numbers of their predators ultimately depend, such as is …

Body Temperatures Of Manis Gigantea And Manis Tricuspis, Clyde Jones
United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications
Little information has been published with regard to body temperatures of pangolins. Eisentraut (Saugetierk, Mitt. 4:64-67, 1959) provided a few rectal temperatures of Manis tricuspis. Data available on body temperatures, as well as detailed information on other aspects of the biology of pangolins, were summarized by Mohr (Schuppentiere, Die neue Brehm-Bucherei, A. Ziemsen Verlag-Wittenberg Lutherstadt, 99 pp., 1961).
The purpose of this report is to present some additional information on body temperatures and thermal regulatory responses of M. gigantea and M. tricuspis.

A Preliminary Bibliography And Lake Index Of The Inland Mineral Waters Of The World, D. B. Mccarraher
Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Staff Research Publications
This preliminary- bibliography and lake index has been prepared by the author on the basis of information available in the Office of Limnology, Hastings College, Nebraska. Although all source material available there has been searched, it is recognized that many papers, especially those published in regional languages may have been left out. Readers are requested to point out such omissions and any inaccuracies that require correction.
This preliminary bibliography will be circulated among specialists in the subject for corrections to the citations and for suggested additions to the list. It is planned that the paper will then be revised to …

The Resources Management Movement (The Coming Death Of Production Management Education), Richard J. Schonberger
The Resources Management Movement (The Coming Death Of Production Management Education), Richard J. Schonberger
Department of Management: Faculty Publications
Production management, taught in nearly all colleges of business administration, is not a popular course. One reason it is not popular is that it does not relate to the typical young student's life experiences. This typical student has for 18 years or more been a social animal, and thus he can relate to college courses in the sociopsychological realm. The rare student who has considerable work experience is the only one likely to appreciate and perhaps even enjoy a course in production management (or operations management, as it is called in some schools).
But this kind of problem is found …

Fm 30-16, Technical Intelligence, 1972, Robert L. Bolin
United States Department of Defense Military Intelligence
This manual reflects the lessons learned about technical intelligence during World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. The manual explains the theory of Army technical intelligence and describes strategic technical intelligence organizations in the United States.
Much of the manual explains technical intelligence activities of US forces in the field. It explains technical intelligence planning and collection activities. The need to label and handle captured equipment properly is stressed.
Appendices list references and technical intelligence categories, provide a sample technical intelligence plan, and explain handling and reporting of captured materiel and the standard nomenclature system for identifying Soviet bloc weapons and …
Extending Lactation Records In Progress To 305-Day Equivalent, J. F. Keown, L. Dale Van Vleck
Extending Lactation Records In Progress To 305-Day Equivalent, J. F. Keown, L. Dale Van Vleck
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
The data consisted of 204,558 complete Holstein lactations in 2,100 herds compiled by the New York Dairy Records Processing Laboratory from 1959 to 1969 All lactation records had to have a 9th or 10th test day to be complete. The generalized least squares analysis used a model including mean, herd-year, and season-age-stage as fixed effects. The error term included random effects of con, and residual variation. Means for specified stages of lactation for milk and fat were estimated for lactations 1, 2, 3, and 4 or greater which were grouped by age of freshening, two age groups for the first …

A New Species Of Menoceras From The Marsland Formation Of Nebraska, Lloyd G. Tanner
A New Species Of Menoceras From The Marsland Formation Of Nebraska, Lloyd G. Tanner
Bulletin of the University of Nebraska State Museum (1924–2023)
Further study indicates that the Menoceras remains collected from the "Bridgeport Quarries" (lower port:on or the Marsland Formation, Middle Miocene, of the Hemingford Group) are of a new species.
In 1962, these dicerathere remains were considered to be a geologic variety of Diceratherium niobrarensis (Stecher, Schultz, and Tanner). However, later (Tanner, 1969) a generic distinction was revived, separating the Menoceras Troxell from Diceratherium Marsh. Diceretherium niobrarensis was then placed in synonymy with Menoceras arikarense (Barbour).
The new species is an intermediate between Menoceras arikarense (Barbour) from the Harrison Formation and Menoceras marslandensis Tanner, from the upper portion of the Marsland …

Phyletic Trends In Certain Lineages Of Quaternary Mammals, C. Bertrand Schultz, Lloyd G. Tanner, Lary D. Martin
Phyletic Trends In Certain Lineages Of Quaternary Mammals, C. Bertrand Schultz, Lloyd G. Tanner, Lary D. Martin
Bulletin of the University of Nebraska State Museum (1924–2023)
Evolutionary trends in certain carnivores, rodents, bovids, and proboscideans are examined. Chronoclines are demonstrated for muskrats, beavers, mammoths, and bison. The Pliocene-Pleistocene boundary and Quaternary climatic fluctuations are also discussed.
The University of Nebraska State Museum contains a large stratigraphically controlled collection of Pleistocene animals. This collection provides a unique opportunity for the study of phyletic trends in certain lineages of mammals. Although a few phylogenetic lineages have been proposed (Schultz and Frankforter, 1946; Hibbard, et al., 1965), this has not been done for the vast majority of Pleistocene mammals. However, there is much more data available than this would …
Livestock Feeding: What Small Feeders Are Doing In Nebraska, Allen C. Wellman, Jeffrey L. Jorgensen
Livestock Feeding: What Small Feeders Are Doing In Nebraska, Allen C. Wellman, Jeffrey L. Jorgensen
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Specific data about how smaller Nebraska feeders are marketing their livestock has not been readily available. This is a report of a survey which was conducted in order to analyze the marketing practices of these livestock feeders and the changes in their marketing practices over a five-year period.
The objectives of this study are (1) to determine whether direct sales of fed cattle to packers is increasing in Nebraska as national trends indicate, (2) to obtain a general picture of the current state of the livestock marketing system for small feeders in Nebraska, and (3) to forecast possible trends for …

Association Of Type Traits With Reasons For Disposal, L. Dale Van Vleck, H. D. Norman
Association Of Type Traits With Reasons For Disposal, L. Dale Van Vleck, H. D. Norman
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Reasons for disposal of 3,475 cows from 188 New York Holstein herds were compared with type appraisal and milk yield in first lactation to study the relationship between type traits measured early in life and later reasons for disposal. Reasons for disposal were grouped as production (32%), udder (22%), reproduction (27%), inabilities or disease (8%), workability (3%), type (3%), and other (5%). Few traits measured before 49 months of age had any significant value in predicting the reason for a cow's eventual disposal. These results in addition to earlier studies of heritability suggest that type traits measured in the first …

Dealer Influence On Farmers' Decisions To Purchase Pesticides, Loyd L. Young
Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The purpose of this study was to analyze the influence agricultural pesticide dealers have on farmers' decisions to purchase and use agricultural pesticides. Specific objectives of the study were to: 1. Ascertain the extent to which dealers influence farmers in their decision-making to use and purchase pesticides. 2. Examine the characteristics of the farmer and his farming operation in relation to the amount of influence the dealer had on the farmers' pesticide purchasing decisions. 3. Evaluate the reasons farmers selected their pesticide dealers. 4. Determine the factors that influenced farmers to use pesticides. PROCEDURE Data were obtained. by personal interviews …

The Microtine Rodents Of The Mullen Assemblage From The Pleistocene Of North Central Nebraska, Larry D. Martin
The Microtine Rodents Of The Mullen Assemblage From The Pleistocene Of North Central Nebraska, Larry D. Martin
Bulletin of the University of Nebraska State Museum (1924–2023)
The University of Nebraska State Museum has had an active collecting program in Hooker and Cherry counties, Nebraska, since the 1930's. The following University of Nebraska State Museum collecting localities have been extensively excavated: Cr-10, Cr-102, Cr-11, Ho-101, Ho-102, and Ho-103. These localities have produced a large vertebrate fauna described by Jakway as the Mullen Local Fauna which he considered for the most part to be Early lllinoian. Further study of this local fauna now demonstrates that assemblage does include Early as well as Middle Pleistocene animals. The purpose of this paper is to report on the evidence regarding the …
