Genetic Trend For Milk Yield From Doe Evaluations In The Northeast United States, K. G. Boldman, L. Dale Van Vleck
Genetic Trend For Milk Yield From Doe Evaluations In The Northeast United States, K. G. Boldman, L. Dale Van Vleck
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Milk production records of 306 Alpine, 72 LaMancha, 170 Nubian, 84 Saanen, and 235 Toggenburg does born in the Northeast from 1972 through 1979 were used to estimate trends of additive genetic value. Estimated transmitting abilities were doubled and averaged for all does born in each year to obtain yearly estimates of genetic value. Genetic trends from regression of yearly mean genetic value on year of birth for Alpine, La- Mancha, Nubian, Saanen, and Toggenburg averaged 11.4, -7.9, 1.9, 14.6, and 11.7 kg per year. Genetic trends were less than theoretically possible, indicating that more effective selection schemes are needed, …

Inbreeding Of Artificially Bred Dairy Cattle In The Northeastern United States, G. F. S. Hudson, L. Dale Van Vleck
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Inbreeding coefficients of artificially bred Ayrshire, Guernsey, Holstein, Jersey, and Brown Swiss cows were calculated from relationships between sires and maternal male ancestors. Percentages of inbred cows and average inbreeding coefficients of inbred cows were: Ayrshire, 26 and 11%; Guernsey, 11 and 4%; Holstein, 31 and 1%; Jersey 23 and 2%; and Brown Swiss, 23 and 2%. Percentages of inbred cows and average inbreeding coefficients of all cows increased over time whereas average coefficients of inbred cows decreased over time. These temporal trends may be due in part to having more pedigree information available for cows born in later years. …

Dummy-Elicited Aggressive Behavior In The Polychromatic Midas Cichlid, George W. Barlow, William Rogers, Alan B. Bond
Alan Bond Publications
Aggressive responses of 12 individuals of the polychromatic Midas cichlid Cichlasoma citrinellum were tested with five different sizes of neutrally colored (spot pattern) life-like dummies. The dummies were presented daily over six days, for one minute apiece, in a balanced design. Color (gold or normal morph) and sex of the subjects were varied independently. The attacks and threats at the dummies were positively correlated in their occurrence so they were combined to yield an aggregate measure of aggression. Attacks on blinded juveniles, five minutes before and five minutes after viewing a dummy, were analyzed to test for the occurrence of …

G84-735 State And Local Government Budgets In Nebraska, A.L. (Roy) Frederick, Michael Lundeen
G84-735 State And Local Government Budgets In Nebraska, A.L. (Roy) Frederick, Michael Lundeen
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
The last in a series of nine NebGuides on state funding and sources, this publication discusses state and local subdivision budget preparation and implementation.
All levels of government must plan for the future, making decisions about what services to provide and how to pay for them. This process, called budgeting, is often difficult because "worthy causes" exceed available funds.
According to Nebraska law, both the state government and local government subdivisions must establish annual operating budgets. Moreover, certain procedures must be followed in the development of these budgets. The budgeting process is precisely defined to ensure that citizens have an …

G84-717 Fleas And Their Management (Revised January 1993), Shripat T. Kamble, David L. Keith
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
This NebGuide provides information on flea biology and how to solve flea problems.
Fleas are among the most annoying pests known to humans. In ancient times, fleas were even indicted, found guilty and sentenced to condemnation. Today, the verdict remains the same.
In Nebraska, fleas are common household pests attacking dogs, cats and sometimes people. In addition to these, several other flea species occur in Nebraska, feeding principally on rodents and occasionally on poultry and livestock. The information provided in this publication will focus primarily on cat and dog fleas, as they are the most commonly encountered species.
G84-738 Management To Minimize Hay Waste, Bruce Anderson, Terry L. Mader
G84-738 Management To Minimize Hay Waste, Bruce Anderson, Terry L. Mader
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
This NebGuide discusses harvest factors that affect hay yield and quality as well as ways to reduce losses during harvest, storage, and feeding.
Hay is harvested, stored, and fed under a wide variety of conditions that influence both its yield and feed value. High quality hay is needed by animals that require high nutrient concentrations to reach desired levels of production. These include dairy cows, finishing beef cattle, fattening lambs, and race horses. Excellent hay management is required to produce the hay needed by these livestock. High quality hay is also used as a supplement to lower quality forages, such …

G84-696 Small Grains For Silage Or Hay, Paul Q. Guyer, Terry L. Mader
G84-696 Small Grains For Silage Or Hay, Paul Q. Guyer, Terry L. Mader
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
This NebGuide discusses the advantages and disadvantages of using small grains for silage or hay, including handling, storage, feeding, animal performance, and nitrate toxicity potential.
Small grain crops are potentially important sources of high quality forage. Harvesting small grains for hay or silage rather than as grain may mean increased dollar returns per acre. Small grain silage or hay represents more total nutrient production per acre than harvest as grain and, when fed to ruminants, results in increased animal production.

G84-694 New Protein Values For Ingredients Used In Growing Cattle Rations, Rick Stock, Terry L. Mader, Terry Klopfenstein
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
This NebGuide assigns new protein values to feeds and describes two new systems for evaluating supplemental protein sources. Information about protein sources has changed greatly in the last 10 years. Words like "bypass," "escape," or "slowly degraded" have been used to describe some proteins. These terms have the same meaning and refer to a protein source's ability to escape breakdown in the rumen. Ingredient tables usually only list the crude protein content of feeds. Although this has been a useful system, it does not adequately evaluate supplemental protein sources. Digestible protein values have helped describe some forages, but can be …
G84-693 Protein Levels For Growing And Finishing Cattle, Rick Stock, Terry L. Mader, Terry Klopfenstein
G84-693 Protein Levels For Growing And Finishing Cattle, Rick Stock, Terry L. Mader, Terry Klopfenstein
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
This NebGuide describes the use of nonprotein nitrogen and bypass protein sources to fulfill the protein requirements of growing and finishing steers, heifers and bulls. Protein supplementation can be an expensive feed cost for cattle producers. Through the use of nonprotein nitrogen (NPN) and bypass protein sources, however, these costs can be reduced. Bypass protein is the protein that escapes breakdown in the rumen and passes "as is" into the small intestine where it is digested and absorbed. Because NPN sources are usually the most economical sources of supplemental nitrogen, NPN should be used whenever possible. The potential for using …

G84-692 Aeration Of Stored Grain (Revised April 1993), David P. Shelton, Thomas L. Thompson
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
This NebGuide discusses the role of aeration as part of a comprehensive management program for maintaining the quality of stored grain.
Grain is stored for a variety of reasons including expectations of higher prices and for use as animal feed. Regardless of the reason, a comprehensive management program is required to maintain grain quality. This includes: 1) making sure that the grain going into storage is dry, clean and in good condition; 2) regularly inspecting the grain to locate temperature, moisture, or insect problems; and 3) aerating the grain to maintain uniform temperature and moisture conditions, prevent localized hot spot …
G84-723 Maximizing The Use Of Farm Strip Plots, John Havlin, Roger Wesley Elmore
G84-723 Maximizing The Use Of Farm Strip Plots, John Havlin, Roger Wesley Elmore
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Strip plots are an effective means of comparing soil and crop management practices. Guidelines are given for establishing strip plots and evaluating the results. Farmers, extension and industry personnel, and researchers have a common interest in strip plots set out on farm fields to study various soil and crop management practices. Strip plots or tests are usually designed to compare differences between tillage methods, herbicide treatments, varieties, fertilizer sources or rates, methods of chemical application, and many other crop production inputs. Strip tests established in farmer fields could satisfy wider interests, and conceivably yield more useful information, if the planners …

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Twenty-two mature pluriparous beef cows were randomly assigned to one of six treatments in a 2 x 3 factorial experiment in order to study the role of suckling and ovarian factors on control of the tonic and episodic release of luteinizing hormone (LH). Twelve cows remained intact (INT) and 10 were ovariectomized (OVX) within 4 days following the day of parturition (Day 0). The suckling intensities were nonsuckled (0), suckled once daily for 30 mm (1) and suckled ad libitum by two calves (2). Blood samples were collected at 1 5-mm intervals for 6 h weekly, from Days 6 to …

The Nutritional Value Of High Moisture And Reconstituted Sorghum Grain For Swine, J. D. Crenshaw, E. R. Peo, Jr., A. J. Lewis, B. D. Moser, T. D. Crenshaw
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
A growing-finishing experiment involving 150 crossbred swine (replicated by time) and two metabolism experiments involving 36 crossbred barrows were conducted to determine the nutritional value of harvested high moisture (HMSG), reconstituted (RCSG) and dry sorghum grain (DSG) for swine. In Exp. 1, pigs fed HMSG diets gained the same, consumed similar amounts of feed, but less (P<.05) crude protein (equivalent dry matter basis) and had better (P<.05) feed conversion than pigs fed DSG diets.

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
The hypothesis that luteinizing hormone (LH) secretion in prepubertal females is responsive to estradiol negative feedback and that decreased feedback occurs as puberty approaches was tested in heifers. In the first experiment, seven heifers were maintained prepubertal by dietary energy restriction until 508 days of age (Day 0). All heifers were placed on a high-energy diet on Day 0 at which time they received no additional treatment (CONT), were ovariectomized (OVX) or were ovariectomized and subcutaneously implanted with estradiol-17β (OVX-E2). This feeding regimen was used to synchronize reproductive state in all heifers. A second experiment was performed with …
