Endangered And Threatened Wildlife And Plants; Neosho Madtom Determined To Be Threatened
Endangered And Threatened Wildlife And Plants; Neosho Madtom Determined To Be Threatened
United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications
The Fish and Wildlife Service (Service) determines a fish, the Neosho madtom (Noturusplocidus), to be a threatened species under the authority of the Endangered Species Act of 1973 (Act), as amended. The madlom is currently known from the Neosho River (Grand Riverin Oklahoma) drainage: in the Neosho, Cottonwood, and Spring Rivers in southeastern Kansas, southwestern Missouri, and northeastern Oklahoma. Habitat destruction andmodification, principally due to impoundments, dredging activities, and increased water demands, have decreased the distribution and abundance of the species and isolated it into three populations. This rule identifies the taxon as one in need of conservation, …
Chemical Immobilization Of Red Foxes (Vulpes Vulpes), Terry J. Kreeger, Ulysses S. Seal, John R. Tester
Chemical Immobilization Of Red Foxes (Vulpes Vulpes), Terry J. Kreeger, Ulysses S. Seal, John R. Tester
Zoonotics and Wildlife Disease: Publications
Red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) were immobilized with one of the following drug combinations: ketamine/xylazine (n = 22), ketamine/ promazine (n = 35), ketamine/midazolam (n = 13), or tiletamine/zolazepam (n = 22). Foxes given ketamine/xylazine had the shortest induction and longest recovery times relative to other drug combinations, whereas foxes given ketamine/midazolam had the longest induction times. Recommended doses for the various combinations are given. Foxes given ketamine/xylazine were given either 0.1, 0.2, 0.4 mg/kg yohimbine, or saline 40 mm after anesthetic induction. Administration of yohimbine significantly shortened arousal and recovery times relative to control values (P < 0.001).

Determining Matrilines By Antibody Response To Exotic Antigens, Gregory E. Glass, James E. Childs, James W. Leduc, Sandra D. Cassard, Albert D. Donnenberg
Zoonotics and Wildlife Disease: Publications
The antibody responses of female Microtuspennsylvanicus inoculated with a series of antigens not normally encountered under field conditions were examined, and the kinetics of maternally acquired antibody loss in their offspring were determined. The initial antibody response in adults was rapid, peaking in 4-9 weeks, and long-lasting, with a half life of 4-5 months. Antibody levels in females were unaffected by parity, and more than one antigen could be given without affecting circulating-antibody titers. Antibody titers could be enhanced with additional inoculations. Maternal antibody in offspring increased until weaning at 3 weeks then declined exponentially. Minimal detectable titers were reached …
The Enigma Of Drought: Management And Policy Issues For The 1990s, Donald A. Wilhite
The Enigma Of Drought: Management And Policy Issues For The 1990s, Donald A. Wilhite
National Drought Mitigation Center: Faculty Publications
Drought affects more people than any other hazard, in both developed and developing countries, yet few governments have taken steps to prepare for it. This situation stems partly from the complex nature of drought, which affects various sectors of society in different ways, and partly from an inability or unwillingness of governments to accept drought as a normal part of climate, not as an extreme random event. Scientific and policy communities have become increasingly concerned about the inability of governments to respond to drought in an effective and timely manner, and some have called for improved drought planning and management. …

Review Of Early Prehistoric Agriculture In The American Southwest, By W. H. Wills. Santa Fe, New Mexico: School Of American Research Press, 1988. 196 Pages., Alan J. Osborn
Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications
Last paragraph:
Wills's book provides archeologists with an innovative account of why and how past hunter-gatherers initially expanded their food-getting activities to include the cultivation of domesticated crops. His study makes use of a variety of subjects including r- and K-selection, density-dependent responses, risk minimization, the forager-collector continuum, maize phenology, Holocene environments, technological change, stylistic variation, social boundaries, and mating networks. Wills also offers new information and reassessments of the archeological record at Bat, Tularosa, Cordova, and Cienega Creek caves in the Mogollon highlands. He approaches the archeological literature for the American Southwest with healthy skepticism. And he challenges many …
G90-963 Narrow-Row Soybeans, Roger Wesley Elmore, Russell S. Moomaw, Roger Selley
G90-963 Narrow-Row Soybeans, Roger Wesley Elmore, Russell S. Moomaw, Roger Selley
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Narrow-row spacing of soybeans may be a profitable practice with modern herbicides and new lodging-resistant varieties. This NebGuide describes considerations for producing narrow-row soybeans. Early in this century crop row spacing was determined by the breadth of the animals used to work the fields. Spacing had an impact on methods of weed control and the varieties of soybeans developed. Even a decade ago row spacing was determined by tractor tire size since cultivation was required. Also, the tall varieties of soybeans lodged severely in narrow-row systems. However, the broad spectrum of herbicides now available and lodging-resistant soybean varieties have made …

Damage To North Carolina And Florida Highways By Red Imported Fire Ants, W. A. Banks, C. T. Adams, C. S. Lofgren
Entomology Papers from Other Sources
The increasing importance of the red and black imported fire ants, Solenopsis invicta Buren and S. richteri Forel as economic pests is documented in reviews (Lofgren 1986, Adams 1986) and bibliographic lists (Banks et al. 1978, Wojcik & Lofgren 1982, and Wojcik 1986). This report of damage by red imported fire ants (RIFA) to highways in North Carolina and Florida further emphasizes their pestiferous nature.
Rp375 Angora Goats In The Midwest, R. M. Jordan
Rp375 Angora Goats In The Midwest, R. M. Jordan
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Angora goats and the mohair they produce are not major agricultural products in the United States and certainly not in Minnesota where there are fewer than 3,000 Angora goats. Flocks are small and often are owned by those interested in hand weaving. Nevertheless, mohair finds a ready market. In 1989, raw mohair prices in Texas were: kid hair (it's much finer), $6.50/lb; yearling hair, $2.00/lb; and adult hair, $1.00/lb. In addition, mohair incentive payments have amounted to $30 to $15 per head the past two years. These high hair prices are stimulating interest in goat production among an increasing number …

Intake And Digestion Of Low-Quality Meadow Hay By Steers And Performance Of Cows On Native Range When Fed Protein Supplements Containing Various Levels Of Corn, D. W. Sanson, D. C. Clanton, Ivan G. Rush
Panhandle Research and Extension Center
Two trials were conducted to evaluate the effects of corn in protein supplements fed to cattle receiving low-quality forages. In Trial 1, four ruminally cannulated steers (avg BW 550 kg) and four intact steers (avg BW 270 kg) were used in a replicated latin square to determine intake and digestibility of a low-quality meadow hay (4.3% CP) when fed no supplement (NS), 1.12 g CP/kg BW (PS), 1.12 g CP/kg BW with corn supplying 1.98 g starch/kg BW (PLC) or 1.12 g CP/kg BW with corn supplying 3.96 g starch/kg BW (PHC). Hay DM1 decreased (P = .001) and …

Ncr90-379 Sheep Diseases, R.M. Jordan
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Sheep do get sick, but fewer would die if producers recognized that a problem existed, made the correct diagnosis, and treated sheep in the most effective manner. Correct diagnosis is most difficult. It requires experience, and the only way to get that experience is to make the effort. Consulting with your veterinarian can be most helpful.
The following brief comments are intended to provide some help in diagnosing, treating, and preventing some of the more prevalent health problems of sheep.
