Sage Sparrow In Sioux County, Dave Stage, Lois Stage
Sage Sparrow In Sioux County, Dave Stage, Lois Stage
Nebraska Bird Review
On 6 August 1989, we observed a Sage Sparrow approximately one mile east of Coffee Park in Sow Belly Canyon in Sioux Co. The Sparrow flew from an area of sagebrush along the road and perched in the top of some brush about three to four meters high. The bird appeared to be an adult. Its bill was bluish-gray, breast was white with brownish streaks and a central dark spot. It had two faint pale wingbars, whitish eye-ring, a white stripe above the eye, whitish whisker stripe, grayish brown face patch, and light brown streaks on its sides. The head …

Absorption Of Equations For Non-Parents For An Animal Model With Maternal Effects And Genetic Groups, L. Dale Van Vleck
Absorption Of Equations For Non-Parents For An Animal Model With Maternal Effects And Genetic Groups, L. Dale Van Vleck
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Rules for forming the mixed-model equations for the reduced animal model with all relationships and including maternal effects have been set out by Quaas and Pollak. They also have shown how to simplify the mixed-model equations when genetic group effects are included in the model with what has become known as the Q-P transformation. Westell has given rules for calculating the coefficients for the Q-P transformed equations that are associated with the inverse of the numerator relationship matrix and genetic group effects. Those rules can be extended to include maternal effects and genetic groups for maternal as well as direct …

Revision, Phylogeny And Biogeography Of The Genera Parabyrsopolis Ohaus And Viridimicus, New Genus (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Rutelinae), Mary Liz Jameson
University of Nebraska State Museum: Entomology Papers
The North American genus Parabyrsopolis is redefined, and a sister genus, Viridimicus, is established to accommodate those species from southern Mexico to Guatemala previously placed in Cotalpa or Parabyrsopolis. Parabyrsopolis is now monotypic, and four new species (of six) in the genus Viridimicus are described from Mexico: V. cyanochlorus, V. impunctatus, V. ratcliffei, and V. unitus. A key to the species of Viridirnicus, as well as keys to the tribes of Rutelinae, subtribes of Rutelini, and genera of Areodina are presented. Phylogenetic hypotheses (based on cladistic methodology) and biogeographic hypotheses (based on vicariance and …

Boreal Toad In Clear Creek County, Colorado, Richard M. Engeman, Robert W. Connell
Boreal Toad In Clear Creek County, Colorado, Richard M. Engeman, Robert W. Connell
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Many amphibian populations worldwide have experienced recent population declines (e.g. Barinaga 1990). Included among these are declines for the boreal toad (Bufo boreas boreas) in the central Rocky Mountains (Corn et al. 1989; Stolzenburg 1989). The extent of the population declines is such that boreal toad populations in the Rocky Mountains have been included on the list of species to be reviewed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for Threatened or Endangered status (Federal Register 1989). We report here an additional population site for the boreal toad in Colorado.
Back To The Future Of The Great Plains, Frederick C. Luebke
Back To The Future Of The Great Plains, Frederick C. Luebke
Department of History: Faculty Publications
Americans have never really known what to do with the Great Plains. The future of this huge area stretching from Texas to Montana--roughly 20 percent of the contiguous forty-eight states--has been debated for more than a century, even before the term "Great Plains" itself had come into common usage. In 1878, for example, John Wesley Powell argued in his Report on the Lands of the Arid Regions of the United States that fundamental changes had to be made in the American land system in order to bring government policy into conformity with environmental realities in the Great Plains and other …

Remarks Prepared For Delivery To The Journal Of Commerce And The National Foreign Trade Council's Uruguay Round Conference By Secretary Of Agriculture Clayton Yeutier, Clayton K. Yeutter
Clayton K. Yeutter, United States Secretary of Agriculture: Papers
It is time to quit pretending that supply management works as a farm income enhancement program. It may in the short run; it doesn't in the long run. It is time to stop pretending that protectionist trade policies help America's agriculture. They may in the short run; they don't in the long run.

Clayton K. Yeutter, United States Secretary of Agriculture: Papers
It is a pleasure for me to be with you today at the annual meeting of the International Office of Epizootics. I would first like to congratulate the recipients of your gold and silver awards, which I am sure are well-deserved. I also want to state how much the United States has appreciated the efforts of Director-General Blajan. Although we have only been a member of OlE since 1978, we have developed great respect for this organization. OlE is held in high regard throughout the world, and the firm and competent leadership of Dr. Blajan has been a major reason …

Clayton Yeutter Secretary Of Agriculture Before The Senate Committee On Agriculture, Nutrition, And Forestry February 7, 1990, Clayton K. Yeutter
Clayton K. Yeutter, United States Secretary of Agriculture: Papers
Mr. Chairman and Members of the Committee, I welcome the invitation to appear today to discuss the 1990 Farm Bill. The making of farm policy in 1990 will be truly historic. The road that we take over the coming months will be vital to u.s. farmers, the American public, and, in fact, the world. As you know, we have been working very hard at the USDA and within the Administration for many months to develop proposals that we believe will best serve our nation's food and fiber industries and all Americans. Yesterday we unveiled our ideas. This morning, I would …

Carpet Condition: A Curator's Perception Of "The Hole", Carol Bier
Carpet Condition: A Curator's Perception Of "The Hole", Carol Bier
Textile Research Works
Twenty years ago when I set out on the course of a professional life in archaeology, I thought my future lay in ruins. Preparing this paper has given me an opportunity to review my experiences and reassess my perception of condition in general. And, specifically with respect to carpets, it has enabled me to develop a heightened sense of self-awareness and perception of "the hole." I have found upon introspective analysis two key aspects of my own training and experience that have profoundly affected my response as curator to the condition of carpets: The first is a background, prior to …

Effects Of Specialized Grazing Systems On Waterfowl Production In Southcentral North Dakota, William T. Barker, Kevin K. Sedivec, Terry A. Messmer, Kenneth F. Higgins, Dan R. Hertel
United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications
The recent decline in numbers of several waterfowl species (Canadian Wildlife Service and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service 1986, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Canadian Wildlife Service 1988) and poor nesting success indicates that there is insufficient production of ducks in the prairie pothole region to maintain populations at desirable levels (Klett et al. 1988). About 50 percent of the ducks in North America are produced in the prairie pothole region and about 95 percent of the production occurs on private lands (Smith et al. 1964). Thus. a major effort to reverse the decline in duck numbers should emphasize …

Enteric Redmouth Disease Of Salmonids, G. L. Bullock, R. C. Cipriano
United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications
Enteric redmouth disease (ERM) is a systemic bacterial infection of fishes, but is known principally for its occurrence in rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss. It was first reported in the 1950's in Idaho rainbow trout and described by Rucker (1966). In recognition of that first description, the causal organism was named Yersinia ruckeri by Ewing et al. (1978).

Chironomidae Of The Southeastern United States: A Checklist Of Species And Notes On Biology, Distribution, And Habitat, Patrick L. Hudson, David R. Lenat, Broughton A. Caldwell, David Smith
United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications
We provide a current listing of the species of midges (Diptera:Chironomidae) in the southeastern United States (Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee). This checklist should aid in research on this group of insects, which have often proved useful in the assessment of water quality. We document each species' distribution and general habitat and provide the best taxonomic reference to facilitate the identification or description of species in that genus. Changes in nomenclature, unique ecological traits, bibliographic sources, or other items of information are summarized in a paragraph on each genus. Of the 10 subfamilies currently recognized in …

Genotype By Environment Interactions For Milk And Fat Production Across Regions Of The United States, M. J. Carabano, K. M. Wade, L. Dale Van Vleck
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
(Co)variance components for regional production of milk, fat, and fat percentage were estimated via multiple-trait REML using DHIA data from California, New York, and Wisconsin. Data consisted of registered and grade first lactation yields of Holstein cattle from 1970 through 1984. Records were limited to daughters from sires common to the pairs of states analyzed. Averaged numbers of records from California, New York, and Wisconsin were 419,185, 460,296, and 449,866. Genetic correlations between New York and Wisconsin for milk, fat, and fat percentage (.99, .98, and .99) were larger than those between California and New York (.95, .95, and .98) …

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
The ProStaph 1TMMastitis costs U.S. dairy producers almost two billion dollars per year in lost milk production and treatment costs.
Mastitis is the major health problem of dairy cattle. The actual lost income for each mastitis infection is more than $400. Over 70 percent of the economic loss in mastitis is due to lost milk production from subclinically infected cows (those without apparent symptoms).
Subclinical forms of mastitis may not be observed by the milkers or other individuals in the dairy operation. Since there may be little or no visible change in the udder or milk, a laboratory …

Bacterial Gill Disease Of Freshwater Fishes, G. L. Bullock
Bacterial Gill Disease Of Freshwater Fishes, G. L. Bullock
United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications
Fish gills function as both respiratory and excretory organs. Basically they consist of a network of capillaries where blood is separated from the surrounding water by only one or two layers of cells. Proliferation of epithelial tissue, and later the loss of surface by the clubbing and fusing of lamellae, impair respiration and the excretion of nitrogenous waste materials, and disturb osmotic balance. Because these changes adversely affect the health of fish, the prevention and treatment of gill diseases are important in fish culture. Pathologic changes in gill tissues have been divided into five categories: (1) bacterial gill disease (BGD) …
Viral Hemorrhagic Septicemia Of Fishes, Philip E. Mcallister
Viral Hemorrhagic Septicemia Of Fishes, Philip E. Mcallister
United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications
Viral hemorrhagic septicemia (VHS), a systemic infection of various salmonid and a few nonsalmonid fishes, is caused by a rhabdovirus designated as the viral hemorrhagic septicemia virus (Office International des Epizooties 1963). The virus infection occurs in salmonids and certain other fishes of any age and may result in significant cumulative mortality. Fish that survive may become carriers. Viral hemorrhagic septicemia has been reported under various names, of which "Egtved disease" and "Infektiose Nierenschwellung und Leberdegeneration" are the best known. The viral etiology of the disease was established by Jensen (1965), and several serotypes of the virus (also known as …
