How To Engender Learning In The Learning Process? Mathematics, Events And The Invention Of A Mathematical Education, Sônia Maria Clareto, Giovani Cammarota
The Mathematics Enthusiast
This article proposes an exercise of problematization and denaturalization of a math classroom that is born from research carried out with a cartographic approach, in which, when occupying the elementary school math classroom, questions are asked: what happens in a math classroom? Which mathematics happens in a classroom? The event is here in affinity with the philosophy of the event of Gilles Deleuze, in which event is that which cuts time off, drags it, breaks it. Events are possible worlds that erupt in the things that happen. To do so, the writing of this paper takes place in relation to …

A Study On The Indications To The Use Of Base Ten Blocks And Green Chips In Mathematics Textbooks In Brazil, Everaldo Silveira
The Mathematics Enthusiast
This paper describes a research aimed at problematizing cases of indication to the use of Base Ten Blocks (BTB) and Green Chips (GC) for the teaching and learning of the Arabic numeral system and of arithmetic operations. The cases analyzed are present in the five collections of Elementary School mathematics textbooks selected by the National Program of Textbook (PNLD), which were the most purchased by the Ministry of Education (MEC) in 2016, to supply the system of public education in Brazil during the triennium 2016-2018. The identified indications were classified in three types, and two of them were particularly problematized …

Below The Line: Misrepresented Sources In The Rosenhan Hoax, Stewart Justman
Global Humanities and Religions Faculty Publications
Though footnotes may seem like technicalities in the sciences, work in these disciplines is by no means independent of textual sources. How often are sources checked? In the unique case of D. L. Rosenhan’s celebrated—and as we now know, fabricated—study ‘On Being Sane in Insane Places’, a review of any of several listed sources (or even an ordinarily attentive reading of the text itself) would have suggested strongly that something was not right. Had readers examined Rosenhan’s sources with ordinary care, so many misrepresentations would have been uncovered that the credibility of the entire performance would have come into question. …

Digital Literacy Skills For Family History Research, Jaci Wilkinson, Natalie Bond
Mansfield Library Faculty Publications
Objective – In this case study, an archivist and librarian teamed up to teach an introductory course on family history research for adult learners at their university’s lifelong learning centre. In response to students’ relative lack of digital skills, the instructors developed a new set of introductory skills that they believe are essential for genealogy research.
Methods – Authors conducted pre- and post-course surveys to determine student expectations and the extent to which the course met those expectations. Authors coded one of these surveys.
Results – Course assessment and class activities exposed the need for a set of digital skills …

The Longitudinal Effects Of Sleep Quality On Executive Function, Oscar Kronenberger, Cali Caughie
The Longitudinal Effects Of Sleep Quality On Executive Function, Oscar Kronenberger, Cali Caughie
University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)
Poor sleep quality is common today. However, our understanding of how sleep quality affects cognition over time is limited. The current study thus investigates the relationship between sleep quality and executive function longitudinally. Data from Waves 2 and 3 of the Midlife Development in the United States (MIDUS) research project, an ongoing longitudinal study on health and well-being in mid-life adults, was used. During Wave 2, 881 participants were administered the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and performed the Stop and Go Task (SGT), which measures executive function. Nine years later, during Wave 3, these 881 participants were again administered …
Outdoor Recreation In The Winter Of A Pandemic, Joshua Christopher Cobb
Outdoor Recreation In The Winter Of A Pandemic, Joshua Christopher Cobb
University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)
A pandemic has the ability to affect lives from many different perspectives. The COVID-19 pandemic has altered the way people live, learn, and interact with one another; and it will create new social patterns reaching across virtually all platforms. One of the unforeseen problems with a pandemic includes the adaption needed to partake in social and recreational activities. Using a Qualtrics online survey posted on a popular forum for outdoor recreationists, this research study looked to investigate the varying trends due to COVID-19 on the winter outdoor sports community. The results demonstrate that the pandemic affected how people recreate, including …

Female Caregivers of Male Glioblastoma Patients Experience PTSD
Authors: Burke, Emily E.; Minns, Laurie A.
Abstract
Posttraumatic Stress Disorder or PTSD is most frequent among women, but perhaps even more so in female caregivers of male Glioblastoma patients. Glioblastoma itself is a seriously neuro-debilitating disease; an invasive brain cancer that offers poor prognosis and a lifetime’s worth of trauma for not only the patient, but caregiver as well. Due to the patient’s inability to function, the caregiver takes on the pressure of standing in for the mental processes of their loved ones, while juggling their own health. Most prominent among …
Psychological Disparities Contribute To Emotional Burden For Caregivers Of Glioblastoma Patients, Markus R. Hirschfelder
Psychological Disparities Contribute To Emotional Burden For Caregivers Of Glioblastoma Patients, Markus R. Hirschfelder
University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)
Glioblastoma Multiforme (GBM) is an aggressive brain cancer that weakens brain function to the point where patients usually rely heavily on a caregiver. Oftentimes, the caregiver is a female spouse who is caring for her husband with GBM. However, few studies are specific to this caregiver’s emotional burden—in fact, they are typically adapted from studies of slower-progressing diseases like Alzheimer’s and dementia. GBM has a much shorter median survival time. The stress on caregivers in that generally shorter period is high. Mitigating the emotional burden may significantly contribute to longer, better survival outcomes for the GBM patient. For content analysis, …

Glioblastoma Multiforme Caregiver Burden With Family And Friends Present, Molly Christine Massman
University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)
Purpose: Female caregivers of patients with Glioblastoma Multiform suffer significant emotional, physical and financial burden. Additionally, these caregivers are not well educated or equipped to care for the high demands of a brain cancer patient whose condition declines rapidly and have inadequate support systems. In this study, solutions for particular caregiver burden issues are discussed and highlighted specifically to inform family members and friends ways to which they could provide better support systems for caregivers of GBM patients. Methods: Within this study, 102 letters were analyzed from female caregivers regarding their experiences with the various hardships associated with …

Brain Cancer Caregivers Experience High Emotional Distress
Glioblastoma multiforme grade 4 is a type of highly malignant tumor that has an extremely poor prognosis, which leads to major emotional challenges such as heavy and unhealthy burden on caregivers. Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is one of the most severe types of cancer with an average prognosis of 15 months. Due to its high mortality rate, GBM creates major health challenges for patients in a fast rate, but also significantly impacts the caregivers who are caring for these patients. Caregivers can be categorized in a formal and informal …

Title: Binegativity and Depression: Examining Alcohol Use Among Nonexclusively-Oriented Womxn
Authors: Kaylee Kronsperger, Kinsie Dunham, M.A., & Bryan Cochran, Ph.D.
Purpose:
Alcohol use disorders can lead to cirrhosis, cancer, domestic violence, and even death (Carvalho, Andre F, et al. 2019). Gender and sexual minorities (GSM; non-cisgender and nonheterosexual individuals) report elevated rates of alcohol use (“Sexual Orientation Differences”, 2013), although nonexclusively-oriented womxn (NOW; womxn-identified people attracted to more than one gender)(womxn - terminology encompassing all women identified individuals; more inclusive for transgender and nonbinary individuals) in particular report higher rates of alcohol misuse. NOW also report higher rates of depression …
Assessing The Prevalence Of Food Insecurity In College Student Veterans, Gabrielle A. Norconk
Assessing The Prevalence Of Food Insecurity In College Student Veterans, Gabrielle A. Norconk
University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)
Food insecurity is the lack of a household’s physical and economic access to adequate amounts of nutritious, safe, and culturally appropriate foods. Food insecurity is considered a major public and health and nutrition problem in the United States. In 2019 the United States had a household food insecurity rate of 10.5% which represents a total of 35.2 million people. The COVID-19 pandemic is expected to increase the number of food-insecure individuals in the U.S. to 54.3 million (2020/21 projections). The connection between military service and increased vulnerability to food insecurity is currently inconclusive. Not only is there limited research on …

Resilience In Youth Related To Adult Relationships, Svea Rika Wigert
University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)
Having close relationships with adults can increase children’s resilience and decrease risk factors such as mental health problems and feelings of loneliness. A program that targets resilience in youth is the Kaleidoscope Connect Program. This program focuses on the emotional and social needs of students and establishes connections with caring and supportive adults, a key protective factor of this program. The goal of the project is to examine the effectiveness of Kaleidoscope Connect in increasing resilience and decreasing problem behaviors in a sample of sixth, seventh, and eighth graders in a school district in Western Montana. The Bewitching Eye: Women As Basilisks In The Writing Of María De Zayas, Betta C. Lyon-Delsordo
University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)
A commonly referenced motif in Golden Age Spanish literature is the power of a woman’s gaze. For some, this female seductive power is something to be feared, and it is likened to the gaze of a basilisk, a monstrous serpent that can kill by locking eyes with its prey. One author who makes heavy use of this comparison is María de Zayas y Sotomayor (1590 - c. 1661), author of the Novelas amorosas y ejemplares and the Desengaños amorosos, two collections of short stories that bring to light the experiences of Spanish noblewomen in the 17th century. In the …
