Les Chiques: The Addition Of A Third Gender-Neutral Option In The Spanish Language, Fiona Siobhan Bean Apr 2021

Les Chiques: The Addition Of A Third Gender-Neutral Option In The Spanish Language, Fiona Siobhan Bean

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

All nouns, determiners, and many adjectives in the Spanish language are grammatically designated as either masculine or feminine, and the default is always the masculine form. For example, “the tall boy” in Spanish is “el chico alto”, “the tall girl” is “la chica alta”, and if there is a group of tall children the plural form is the masculine “los chicos altos” even if there are females in the group. This binary gender division and masculine default can cause harm, however, when used in reference to women and non-binary people. This paper explores the recent movement to include a third …

Conservation Nonprofits And Communication Of Values, Madeline Damon, Libby Metcalf, John Chandler Apr 2021

Conservation Nonprofits And Communication Of Values, Madeline Damon, Libby Metcalf, John Chandler

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

The purpose of this study is to evaluate how effectively conservation nonprofits communicate their values, or beliefs linked to emotional effect, to the public. This study compares the basic values embedded in mission, vision, and values statements (MVVs) to the values embedded in tweets. The similarity between MVVs and tweets will be compared based on organization size in order to identify any relationship between the size of a nonprofit and how well they communicate values. Finally, the values found in tweets and MVVs will be used to identify a current audience each nonprofit connects to most. The primary method of …

What's In A Pronoun: The Effect Of Default Pronouns On Opinions Of Grsm Rights, Rachel N. Cebull Apr 2021

What's In A Pronoun: The Effect Of Default Pronouns On Opinions Of Grsm Rights, Rachel N. Cebull

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

Tavits and Pérez discovered that usage of gender-neutral pronouns in Sweden correlated with higher acceptance of women and LGBTQ+ individuals, and I decided to see if that effect could be replicated in the USA. In this study, I am replicating Tavits and Pérez’s 2019 study, “Language influences mass opinion toward gender and LGBT equality.” I surveyed a sample of 161 individuals and gave them a priming task where they had to write a few sentences using an assigned set of pronouns. The assigned pronouns were he/him, she/her, they/them, and ze/zir. After that, participants were asked to write about a hypothetical …

Fostering Sustainable Collaboration within Indigenous Communities through Community Based Participatory Research

It is essential to support Indigenous children’s well-being in culturally responsive ways. One important approach is to collaborate with members of the community who understand the strengths of their culture, values, and language to support their children, particularly in Montana, where the rates of Native American students attempting suicide were nearly double that of their White peers (Youth Risk Behavior Survey, 2019). In this paper, we introduce community based participatory research (CBPR) and its importance in Indigenous communities, particularly for research addressing children’s mental health.

In CBPR, researchers actively …

Teaching Methods And The Biology Student’S Perspective Of The Transition To Virtual Learning Due To Covid-19, Alexander R. Stuczynski Apr 2021

Teaching Methods And The Biology Student’S Perspective Of The Transition To Virtual Learning Due To Covid-19, Alexander R. Stuczynski

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

In the spring of 2020, the rise of a novel coronavirus swept across the globe and disrupted anatomy education across the globe. Through previous studies, it is known that the transition from traditionally taught classes to strictly virtual generally negatively impacted students, but it is not known what methods and approaches were best suited to anatomy students. Therefore, it is essential to identify which tools and approaches supported anatomy students and those of which did not support anatomy students via analysis of student perception of the transition. Online surveys were gathered from anatomy students in the BIOH 370 Anatomy and …

University Students and COVID-19: The Impacts From This Pandemic on Mental Health

This study explores the mental health impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on University of Montana students. COVID-19 has had a notable effect on many aspects of life: economic, health, social, and academics. While these areas individually are objectively measurable, the aspect of mental health is more difficult to assess. Survey research was used to measure the impact of COVID-19 on University of Montana students. Participants also reported how these impacts have affected their relationships with these areas of life. While the survey responses are anonymous, we have reached …

America At A Glance: Covid-19 Vaccination Among People With Disabilities, University Of Montana Rural Institute Apr 2021

America At A Glance: Covid-19 Vaccination Among People With Disabilities, University Of Montana Rural Institute

Health and Wellness

There is a lack of foucs on how people with disabilities are experiencing COVID-19 vaccination efforts. Addressing this knowledge gap is critical to ensuring that people with disabilities are considered as vaccination efforts progress during the ongoing pandemic and future health crises. Overall, 19% of our sample of people with disabilities reported already being vaccinated, 56% wanted to get vaccinated, 10% were unsure, and 15% did not want to be vaccinated. Rural residents with disabilities reported higher rates of current vaccination, but higher rates of overall hesitancy, and more barriers to vaccination than urban residents with disabilities. Political party affiliation …

Society and Conservation Faculty Publications

Overall visitation to Grand Canyon National Park (GRCA) grew 36%, and backcountry overnight visits increased 8% from 2010 to 2019. This research examines how park managers and other key stakeholders, such as park-partner staff, are managing increasing visitation levels. In total, 36 semistructured qualitative interviews were conducted with park managers and other key stakeholders during the summer of 2019. This study aims to inform sustainable visitor use management at GRCA and other wildland protected areas by examining the social, physical, and managerial considerations described by respondents. Results demonstrate both immediate and long-term operational issues and constraints for park management stemming …

Effect Of Home-Based Tai Chi, Yoga Or Conventional Balance Exercise On Functional Balance And Mobility Among Persons With Idiopathic Parkinson's Disease: An Experimental Study, Arva Mufaddal Gadly, Brammatha Pandian, Arul Selvan Dr.

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

Background and Purpose: Individuals with Parkinson’s Disease (PD) invariably experience functional decline in a number of motor and non-motor domains affecting posture, balance and gait. Numerous clinical studies have examined effects of various types of exercise on motor and non-motor problems. But still much gap remains in our understanding of various therapies and its effect on delaying or slowing the dopamine neuron degeneration. Recently Tai Chi and Yoga both are gaining popularity as Complementary Therapies, since both have components for mind and body control. The aim of this study was to determine whether 8 weeks of home-based Tai Chi or …

Are Robots Morally Culpable? The Role Of Intentionality And Anthropomorphism, Sarah Sweezy, Shailee Woodard Feb 2021

Are Robots Morally Culpable? The Role Of Intentionality And Anthropomorphism, Sarah Sweezy, Shailee Woodard

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

Culpability for one’s actions arguably hinges on their intentions: A negative outcome is judged more harshly when done purposely versus accidentally (Zelazo, Helwig, & Lau, 1996). However, do children similarly apply this rule to a robot? And is this affected by their propensity to anthropomorphize? To investigate these questions, we tested 3- and 5-year-olds’ inferences of intentions and culpability of two agents (human and robot) and whether their judgments were influenced by their general tendency to anthropomorphize.

Participants (current N=63; 46% female) in two age groups (3 years: n=32, M=3.60 years, SD=.58; 5 years: n=31, …

Developing The Label Avoidance Measure Of Stigma: A Preliminary Psychometric Review, Julia J. Cameron Feb 2021

Developing The Label Avoidance Measure Of Stigma: A Preliminary Psychometric Review, Julia J. Cameron

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

Stigma acts as a barrier to receiving treatment for mental health concerns. Label avoidance, one of several different aspects that compose the overarching concept of stigma, captures the stigma involved when individuals avoid social institutions that might confer a psychiatric diagnostic label and would mark them as an individual with a mental health problem. Label avoidance has been described as a key stigma construct in the literature but has been sparsely studied. Answering a call in the field for new, psychometrically sound stigma measures, we created a new measure of label avoidance and acquired initial validity and reliability evidence supporting …

Cognitive Reserve And Sex Differences In An Alzheimer's Disease Population, Emily Hicks, Genna Mashinchi, Hannes Heppner Feb 2021

Cognitive Reserve And Sex Differences In An Alzheimer's Disease Population, Emily Hicks, Genna Mashinchi, Hannes Heppner

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

Objective: The rate of cognitive decline is not equivalent for all AD patients, as some are able to remain functionally independent longer than others despite similar levels of neuropathology. Cognitive reserve theory (CR) posits that some people maintain cognitive functioning due to the presence of protective factors, such as educational and occupational attainment. The present study sought to investigate relations between cognitive functioning and education within an AD sample. Additionally, the current study examined if the impact of education was influenced by participant age and sex, as previous research has noted higher rates of AD in women than men.

Participants …

Mindfulness Among Practicing School Psychologists, Emily Ann Hattouni Feb 2021

Mindfulness Among Practicing School Psychologists, Emily Ann Hattouni

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

Title: Training and Utility of Mindfulness among Practicing School Psychologists

Purpose: School psychologists work with students, teachers, and parents to address issues such as learning, social development, and emotion regulation. Unfortunately, there has been a shortage of school psychologists within the field for the past two decades, and this is projected to continue until at least 2025 (Castillo, et al., 2014). Research has shown up to 90% of school psychologists report experiencing high levels of burnout (Schilling et al., 2018). However, research indicates that mindfulness is counter to experiences of burnout among classroom teachers (Jennings & Greenburg, 2009) and …

Social Influences And Social Desirability On Recollections Of Childhood Bullying, Jaynee L. Bohart Feb 2021

Social Influences And Social Desirability On Recollections Of Childhood Bullying, Jaynee L. Bohart

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

Parents and peers play important roles in shaping attitudes toward a variety of matters during adolescence. However, little research has investigated parental and peer influence on developing attitudes toward bullying. To address this gap in literature, the current study recruited college students from a mid-sized public university in the Rocky Mountain region of the United States to complete a survey about their past bullying attitudes and perceptions of their parents’ and peers’ influence on their attitudes. Resulted indicated that while participants reported both their parents and peers as influential on their past attitudes, they perceived their parents as more influential …

2020 Lgbtq+ Specific Substance Use Services Survey: A Study On The Availability And Perceived Helpfulness Of Treatment Programs, Chonghui (Gabriella) Ji

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

Health disparities researchers have identified elevated rates of difficulties among gender and sexual minorities (GSM). In addition to a higher rate of general mental health issues, there is also a higher prevalence rate of substance misuse among GSM individuals when compared to the general population. Specific issues, such as stigma and oppression faced by GSMs, might have a direct linkage with the higher prevalence rate and might also impact treatment outcomes. To understand the specific factors that lead to substance misuse, as well as to understand the unique patterns of treatment-seeking and adherence among GSM clients, the development and dissemination …

"Its Own Little City": Service Work In Truck Stops, Michelle Williams

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

Montana truck stops act as a meeting place for long-haul truckers, vacationers, local commuters, and the workers simply trying to earn a living. Today, the employees at such truck stops operate at the intersection of customer service, the trucking industry, and the COVID-19 pandemic. Although each of these has been studied individually, the research I conducted during the summer and fall of 2020 offers a unique view of how customer service employees fared during political unrest, global health concerns, and financial struggle. Additionally, this study highlights the power dynamics that exist in the service industry by examining how such dynamics …

Emotional Appeals in Advertising Directed at Women: 1940-1950

The 1940s were a transformative era in the history of American advertising. At the beginning of the decade the industry adapted to the needs of the war effort, while pivoting after the war to epitomize the growing consumer culture. Increasingly throughout this period marketing campaigns used emotional persuasion techniques to sell their products. In effect, this was the beginning of the era of “keeping up with the Joneses,” and emotional appeals in advertising served to help the new consumer-minded citizens identify personally with the products they …

College Success Is For Foster Children Too, Ashlyn M. Kincaid

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

In 2016, the Adoption and Foster Care Analysis Reporting System reported that 437,465 children were in foster care. Removal of a child from their family typically happens for reasons that pose immediate safety risks, such as abuse, neglect, parental substance abuse, unsuitable living conditions, parental mental illness, family violence, or the absence of parents (Lohr & Jones, 2016). For these reasons, children who are or have been in foster care are at risk of experiencing a variety of negative health and behavior outcomes. One domain where foster children face specific challenges is the education system. Frequent placement changes often result …

Understanding Students’ Immediacies And Integrative Arguments In Collaborative Reasoning Discussions, Rebekah Skoog, Sisilia Kusumaningsih Feb 2021

Understanding Students’ Immediacies And Integrative Arguments In Collaborative Reasoning Discussions, Rebekah Skoog, Sisilia Kusumaningsih

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

Collaborative Reasoning (CR) discussion, as a form of a dialogic learning, has been proven to enhance children’s reasoning skills (Clark et al., 2003; Nguyen-Jahiel, et al., 2007; Sun et al. 2015). In CR, students are presented with a story that contains controversial issues and are asked to present evidence to support their stance towards the issue. In addressing the main question in CR, children challenge their peers’ arguments and encounter cognitive conflicts, which facilitate the development of their thinking to a higher level (Kim et al., 2007). This is significant as it can lead to discussants partially accepting the counterargument …
