Model Average Versus Model Selection: A Bayes Perspective, Tri Le Feb 2017

Model Average Versus Model Selection: A Bayes Perspective, Tri Le

Colloquium

We compare the performance of five model average predictors—stacking, Bayesian model averaging, bagging, random forests, and boosting—to the components used to form them. In all five cases we provide conditions under which the model average predictor performs as well or better than any of its components. This is well known empirically, especially for complex problems, although few theoretical results seem to be available. Moreover, all five of the model averages can be regarded as Bayesian. Stacking is the Bayes optimal action in an asymptotic sense under several loss functions. Bayesian model averaging is known to be the Bayes action under …

Iterated Filtering And Iterated Smoothing Algorithms, Dao Nguyen Feb 2017

Iterated Filtering And Iterated Smoothing Algorithms, Dao Nguyen

Colloquium

Partially observed Markov process (POMP) models are ubiquitous tools for modeling time series data in many fields including statistics, econometrics, ecology, and engineering. Because of incomplete measurements and possibly weakly identifiable parameters, making inferences on POMP models can be challenging. Standard methods for inference (e.g., maximum likelihood) with restrictive assumptions of linear Gaussian models have often led to unsatisfactory results when the assumptions are violated. To relax these assumptions, this talk develops a class of simulation-based algorithms called iterated filtering and smoothing for POMP models. First, a novel filter called Bayes map iterated filtering is introduced. This filter recursively combines …

Machine Learning And Natural Language Methods For Detecting Psychopathy In Textual Data, Andrew Stephen Henning Jan 2017

Machine Learning And Natural Language Methods For Detecting Psychopathy In Textual Data, Andrew Stephen Henning

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Among the myriad of mental conditions permeating through society, psychopathy is perhaps the most elusive to diagnose and treat. With the advent of natural language processing and machine learning, however, we have ushered in a new age of technology that provides a fresh toolkit for analyzing text and context. Because text remains the medium of choice for most personal and professional interactions, it may be possible to use textual samples from psychopaths as a means for understanding and ultimately classifying similar individuals based on the content of their language usage. This paper aims to investigate natural language processing and supervised …

Re-Evaluating The Tectonic Model For The Arbuckle Mountains, Oklahoma By Spatial And Geometric Analysis Of Stratigraphic And Structural Trends, Dakota James Kolb Jan 2017

Re-Evaluating The Tectonic Model For The Arbuckle Mountains, Oklahoma By Spatial And Geometric Analysis Of Stratigraphic And Structural Trends, Dakota James Kolb

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Understanding the spatial distribution and geometric relations between stratigraphy and structural features can allow for a more accurate tectonic timeline to be considered for not only the Arbuckle Mountains but for the assembly of modern North America. The Arbuckle Mountains in south central Oklahoma exhibit structurally complex stratigraphy associated with regional features like the Southern Oklahoma Aulacogen, the Arbuckle Anticline and the Washita Valley fault. Camp Classen YMCA and Turner Falls city park in Davis, OK, hosts observed, but largely unmapped, small scale structural features that best represent the magnitude of deformation. The goal of this study was to determine …

Compact Objects In Relativistic Theories Of Gravity, Hector Okada Da Silva Jan 2017

Compact Objects In Relativistic Theories Of Gravity, Hector Okada Da Silva

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this dissertation we discuss several aspects of compact objects, i.e. neutron stars and black holes, in relativistic theories of gravity. We start by studying the role of nuclear physics (encoded in the so-called equation of state) in determining the properties of neutron stars in general relativity. We show that low-mass neutron stars are potentially useful astrophysical laboratories that can be used to constrain the properties of the equation of state. More specifically, we show that various bulk properties of these objects, such as their quadrupole moment and tidal deformability, are tightly correlated. Next, we develop a formalism that aims …

High School Contextual Variables And Act Scores, John-Mark Cain Jan 2017

High School Contextual Variables And Act Scores, John-Mark Cain

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This quantitative study analyzes findings from the 2015 Crepe Myrtle High School (CMHS) graduates and determines if statistically significant relationships exist between student demographic and school participation variables with ACT composite scores. Utilizing both a Pearson product moment statistical correlation and t-test for continuous variables and a One-Way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) for categorical variables, the researcher identifies and presents significant relationships or differences in means, between the academic achievement of 2015 Crepe Myrtle High School graduates and ACT composite scores. The variables analyzed consists of: (a) the number of completed core classes; (b) high school grade points averages (HSGPAs); …

Design Of A High Luminosity 100 Tev Proton Antiproton Collider, Sandra Jimena Oliveros Tautiva Jan 2017

Design Of A High Luminosity 100 Tev Proton Antiproton Collider, Sandra Jimena Oliveros Tautiva

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Currently new physics is being explored with the Large Hadron Collider at CERN and with Intensity Frontier programs at Fermilab and KEK. The energy scale for new physics is known to be in the multi-TeV range, signaling the need for a future collider which well surpasses this energy scale. A 10 34 cm-2 s-1 luminosity 100 TeV proton-antiproton collider is explored with 7× the energy of the LHC. The dipoles are 4.5 T to reduce cost. A proton-antiproton collider is selected as a future machine for several reasons. The cross section for many high mass states is 10 times higher …
