Low-Frequency Emission Enhancement By Resonant Acoustic Metamaterials, Maryam Landi
Low-Frequency Emission Enhancement By Resonant Acoustic Metamaterials, Maryam Landi
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Omnidirectional and directional acoustic emission enhancements, at low frequencies as well as broad frequency bands, are highly demanded in audio, medical ultrasonics, and underwater acoustics. Emission enhancement and controlling the directivity of an acoustic source is however restricted to the properties of the source. In particular, the size of the source, in comparison with the wavelength of the sound, plays a very dominant role in determining the quality of the emitted acoustic wave. Most problems arise when there is a small acoustic source emitting very low frequency sound with large wavelength. Prior studies have proposed several solutions to this problem …
Final Muon Cooling For A Muon Collider, John Gabriel Acosta Castillo
Final Muon Cooling For A Muon Collider, John Gabriel Acosta Castillo
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
To explore the new energy frontier, a new generation of particle accelerators is needed. Muon colliders are a promising alternative if muon cooling can be made to work. Muons are 200 times heavier than electrons, so they produce less synchrotron radiation, and they behave like point particles. However, they have a short lifetime of 2.2 μs and the beam is more difficult to cool than an electron beam. The Muon Accelerator Program (MAP) was created to develop concepts and technologies required by a muon collider. An important effort has been made in the program to design and optimize a muon …
A Probabilistic Approach To Multiple-Instance Learning, Silu Zhang
A Probabilistic Approach To Multiple-Instance Learning, Silu Zhang
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study introduced a probabilistic approach to the multiple-instance learning (mil) problem. In particular, two bayes classication algorithms were proposed where posterior probabilities were estimated under dierent assumptions. The rst algorithm, named instance-vote, assumes that the probability of a bag being positive or negative depends upon the percentage of its instances being positive or negative. This probability is estimated using a k-nn classication of instances. In the second approach, embedded kernel density estimation (ekde), bags are represented in an instance induced (very high dimensional) space. A parametric stochastic neighbor embedding method is applied to learn a mapping that projects bags …
Accelerating The Discontinuous Galerkin Cell-Vertex Scheme (Dg-Cvs) Solver On Cpu-Gpu Heterogeneous Systems, Xiaoqi Hu
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Dg-Cvs (Discontinuous Galerkin Cell-Vertex Scheme) is an efficient, accurate and robust numerical solver for general hyperbolic conservation laws. It can solve a broad range of conservation laws such as the shallow water equation and Magnetohydrodynamics equations. Dg-Cvs is a Riemann-Solver-free high order space-time method for arbitrary space conservation laws. It fuses the discontinuous Galerkin (dg) method and the conservation element/solution element (ce/se) method to take advantage of the best features of both methods. Thanks to the ce/se method, the time derivative of the solution is treated as an independent unknown, which is amendable to gpu's parallel execution. In this thesis, …
Deployment, Coverage And Network Optimization In Wireless Video Sensor Networks For 3d Indoor Monitoring, Tisha Lafaye Brown
Deployment, Coverage And Network Optimization In Wireless Video Sensor Networks For 3d Indoor Monitoring, Tisha Lafaye Brown
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
As a result of extensive research over the past decade or so, wireless sensor networks (wsns) have evolved into a well established technology for industry, environmental and medical applications. However, traditional wsns employ such sensors as thermal or photo light resistors that are often modeled with simple omni-directional sensing ranges, which focus only on scalar data within the sensing environment. In contrast, the sensing range of a wireless video sensor is directional and capable of providing more detailed video information about the sensing field. Additionally, with the introduction of modern features in non-fixed focus cameras such as the pan, tilt …

An Exploratory Analysis: A Mixed-Methods Investigation Of The Construct Validity Of The 2016 Mississippi Statewide Accountability System, Justin Andrew Geurin
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Abstract: the purpose of this research project was to conduct an exploratory analysis of the 2016 Mississippi Statewide Accountability System (MSAS), which is the model by which all public school in Mississippi are assessed, rated, and ranked, in an attempt to assess whether or not the system is an effective policy tool, especially in relation to the goals associated with its development and implementation. The study was conducted in three distinct sections: phase one analyzed the model itself and all associated documents, while the researcher also conducted interviews with several individuals with knowledge of the development of the system to …
Co2 Adsorption On Volcanic Ash: Net Contribution Of Volcanic Eruptions To The Global Carbon Cycle, Lee New
Co2 Adsorption On Volcanic Ash: Net Contribution Of Volcanic Eruptions To The Global Carbon Cycle, Lee New
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Adsorption of co2 on mineral surfaces accounts for a small percentage of the terrestrial co2 sink. Volcanic ash is virtually free of co2 when erupted and has a high surface area resulting in a high capacity for co2 adsorption. Volcanism is commonly assumed to be only a source of co2, but pyroclastic eruptions can also potentially serve as a sink. Adsorption was investigated for 6 volcanic ash samples of andesitic composition from four volcanoes: Okmok, Redoubt, Spurr, and Tungurahua. The eruption of volcano redoubt released 0.75 x 109 metric tons of co2 and 55 x 109 kg of ash throughout …
A Kinematic Comparison Of Shoulder And Elbow Dynamics Influenced By The Shoe-Surface Interface In Youth And Adolescent Baseball Pitchers, Jacob Richard Gdovin
A Kinematic Comparison Of Shoulder And Elbow Dynamics Influenced By The Shoe-Surface Interface In Youth And Adolescent Baseball Pitchers, Jacob Richard Gdovin
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
From 1994-2006, 1.5 million baseball injuries were treated within emergency departments across the United States while the upper extremity was the second most commonly injured body part. Although it has been determined that pitch count, pitch type and pitching mechanics are the main contributors to upper extremity pain in baseball pitchers, footwear has not been considered a potential factor. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine how baseball-specific footwear [turf shoes (ts) and molded cleats (mc)] affects the shoulder and elbow dynamics of youth and adolescent pitchers during an overhead pitch on various surface inclinations [flat ground (fg) …
Detection Of Sedimentary Depositional Cycles In The Salado Formation, Southeastern New Mexico, Scott Paul Milo
Detection Of Sedimentary Depositional Cycles In The Salado Formation, Southeastern New Mexico, Scott Paul Milo
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
An abundance of evaporitic features is preserved throughout the approximately 2,000-foot-thick Salado formation that is present across west Texas and southeastern New Mexico. The formation and preservation of evaporitic features are largely influenced by hydrology, and so those found in the Salado represent an uninterrupted record of hydrogeologic conditions in what is now the southwestern United States during the late Permian. Because it is home to the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) repository chamber, the salado has been the subject of countless studies ranging from areas of sedimentology, to geochemistry, to geotechnical engineering, to hydrology. However, until now there have …
Impact Of Timber Harvest On Mercury Mobilization In A Mixed Pine And Hardwood Forest And Adjacent Lake In Mississippi, Mary Kristen Dickerson
Impact Of Timber Harvest On Mercury Mobilization In A Mixed Pine And Hardwood Forest And Adjacent Lake In Mississippi, Mary Kristen Dickerson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
With 65% of land area covered in forest, Mississippi is a leader in the timber industry. Whereas forestry provides numerous benefits for humans and wildlife, forest harvest has been hypothesized to increase mercury (Hg) mobilization to aquatic systems. In a forest, Hg mostly accumulates in the upper layer of soil, where associates with organic matter. This top soil is exposed after clear-cutting and thus more susceptible to runoff. Harvest may also change the net balance between Hg methylation and demethylation by microorganisms through changes in redox conditions and addition of carbon sources from decaying logging residues. To better understand the …
Graphene Nano-Composites For Hypervelocity Impact Applications, Alharith Manasrah
Graphene Nano-Composites For Hypervelocity Impact Applications, Alharith Manasrah
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The Low Earth Orbit (LEO) is a harsh environment cluttered with natural meteoroids and man-made debris, which can travel at velocities approaching 15 km/s. Most space activities within the LEO will encounter this environment. Thus, the spacecraft and its hardware must be designed to survive debris impact. This research introduces new procedures to produce a nano-composite material with mortar-brick nano-structure inspired from nacre. Nacre-like composites were successfully manufactured, based on three host polymers, with a wide range of graphene concentrations. The manufactured exfoliated graphene nano-platelet, embedded in a host polymer, provided good potential for enhancement of the hypervelocity impact (HVI) …

The Relationship Of Principal Gender And Teacher Perceptions Of School Climate On Suspension And Expulsion Rates Of High School Students, Roderick Lydell Payne
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this explanatory quantitative study was to determine if relationships exist between principal gender, teachers’ perceptions of the school climate, and the suspension rates of high school students in a large consolidated district in the mid-South. The research analyzed a single academic year, 2015–16, within the subject district. The study sample consisted of 20 high schools with similar characteristics. Ten of the high schools have a female principal and 10 of the high schools have a male principal. The independent variables of the study were principal gender and teachers’ perceptions of the school climate; dependent variables were the …
Southern Discomfort: Performing Femininity In The Deep South, Rachel Whitney Turnipseed
Southern Discomfort: Performing Femininity In The Deep South, Rachel Whitney Turnipseed
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The “performance” of gender is variable and multifarious, fabricated in reaction to audience, mood, and previous experiences. Starting in childhood, people “police” our gender performances, and profoundly shape our self-presentation and sense of personal identity. We gradually learn to self-edit our performances of gender, after countless critiques by others, which often negatively impact our body image as they preserve “norms,” marginalizing anyone who does not conform. The mixed-media installation, Southern Discomfort: Performing Femininity in the Deep South, examines this process and its impact on young girls. The young, blonde, female figure who appears multiple times in my installation reveal girls …
The Element Spectrum Of A Graph, Milisha Hart-Simmons
The Element Spectrum Of A Graph, Milisha Hart-Simmons
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Characterizations of graphs and matroids that have cycles or circuits of specified cardinality have been given by authors including Edmonds, Junior, Lemos, Murty, Reid, Young, and Wu. In particular, a matroid with circuits of a single cardinality is called a Matroid Design. We consider a generalization of this problem by assigning a weight function to the edges of a graph. We characterize when it is possible to assign a positive integer value weight function to a simple 3-connected graph G such that the graph G contains an edge that is only in cycles of two different weights. For example, as …
Orthosymmetric Maps And Polynomial Valuations, Stephan Christopher Roberts
Orthosymmetric Maps And Polynomial Valuations, Stephan Christopher Roberts
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
We present a characterization of orthogonally additive polynomials on vector lattices as orthosymmetric multilinear maps. Our proof avoids partitionaly orthosymmetric maps and results that represent orthogonally additive polynomials as linear maps on a power. We also prove band characterizations for order bounded polynomial valuations and for order continuous polynomials of order bounded variation. Finally, we use polynomial valuations to prove that a certain restriction of the Arens extension of a bounded orthosymmetric multilinear map is orthosymmetric.
Phase Stability In Cobalt-Based L12 Quaternary Intermetallics From Density Functional Theory, William Earwood
Phase Stability In Cobalt-Based L12 Quaternary Intermetallics From Density Functional Theory, William Earwood
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The effects of higher order alloying additions (Mo, Ti, Ta, Hf, Fe, V) on the phase stability of L12 (γ’) intermetallics have been studied via first-principles. A 32 atom special-quasi-random structure was used to mimic the experimentally observed solid solution sublattice. Density of states distributions were generated in order to directly observe the impact of alloying additions on the position of the pseudogap and number of states at the Fermi level. Charge density differences across the supercell were visualized to analyze changes in bonding behavior. The results indicate that substitutions of Ti, Ta, and Hf in place of the central …

Are You Ready? A Proposed Framework For The Assessment Of Digital Forensic Readiness, Andres Felipe Diaz Lopez
Are You Ready? A Proposed Framework For The Assessment Of Digital Forensic Readiness, Andres Felipe Diaz Lopez
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation develops a framework to assess Digital Forensic Readiness (DFR) in organizations. DFR is the state of preparedness to obtain, understand, and present digital evidence when needed. This research collects indicators of digital forensic readiness from a systematic literature review. More than one thousand indicators were found and semantically analyzed to identify the dimensions to where they belong. These dimensions were subjected to a q-sort test and validated using association rules, producing a preliminary framework of DFR for practitioners. By classifying these indicators into dimensions, it was possible to distill them into 71 variables further classified into either extant …
Band Gap Engineering Of Titania Systems Purposed For Photocatalytic Activity, Cameron Robert Thurston
Band Gap Engineering Of Titania Systems Purposed For Photocatalytic Activity, Cameron Robert Thurston
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Ab initio computer aided design drastically increases candidate population for highly specified material discovery and selection. These simulations, carried out through a first-principles computational approach, accurately extrapolate material properties and behavior. Titanium dioxide (tio2) is one such material that stands to gain a great deal from the use of these simulations. In its anatase form, titania (tio2) has been found to exhibit a band gap nearing 3.2 ev. If titania is to become a viable alternative to other contemporary photoactive materials exhibiting band gaps better suited for the solar spectrum, then the band gap must be subsequently reduced. To lower …

A Thermal Enclosure Prototype For A Suspended Inertial Sensor, Mohammad Afrough
A Thermal Enclosure Prototype For A Suspended Inertial Sensor, Mohammad Afrough
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Although Ligo has detected six gravitational waves so far, people are still conducting research to improve the sensitivity of the detectors in different aspects. At low frequency band, one of the main sources of noise is seismic vibration. Lowering the noise level in this band, helps us to follow the coalescence of compact binary systems earlier in their transformation and increase the signal-to-noise ratio. It also allows us to detect merger of more massive objects. Hence, an isolation system is required to reduce the seismic noise. As a part of isolation system (which can be a passive or an active …
Cultural Bias In English Language Arts Curriculum And Its Effect On African American And Spanish-Speaking English Language Learners In A Municipal School, Shelia Yvette Morgan
Cultural Bias In English Language Arts Curriculum And Its Effect On African American And Spanish-Speaking English Language Learners In A Municipal School, Shelia Yvette Morgan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Many rightly assume that textbooks prior to 1970 in the United States were not culturally responsive to African Americans, and that assumption includes that some research has been conducted on culturally responsive textbooks and African Americans since the Civil Rights Act of 1964. However, even in today's 21st century market, textbook editors and publishers continue to manufacture textbooks that now include African Americans and other ethnicities, but only occasionally in roles that build up the cultural capital of those people groups. In the 21st century there is an urgent need for culturally responsive teaching, "an approach that empowers students intellectually, …
African American Female Principals Of Urban High Schools And Their Negotiation Of Work And Family Conflicts, April Smith
African American Female Principals Of Urban High Schools And Their Negotiation Of Work And Family Conflicts, April Smith
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Women account for approximately 60 percent of all high school teachers, but account for barely 30 percent of the principals of these schools. When the data is disaggregated to only examine African American women in education, the disproportion widens between women and men in leadership. As the demographics of the population in the United States change, there is expanding need for more culturally, ethnically, racially diverse leaders in the public schools. African American women because of their experiences often model transformational leadership with oppression regarding their race and gender. Such leadership is beneficial to minority students, who now make up …
Extreme Weather Disaster Resilient Port And Waterway Infrastructure For Sustainable Global Supply Chain, Quang Van Nguyen
Extreme Weather Disaster Resilient Port And Waterway Infrastructure For Sustainable Global Supply Chain, Quang Van Nguyen
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Global supply chain is largely dependent on seaports and marine terminals. Ports serve international cargo traffic for imports and exports. About 90% of the world’s goods are transported by sea and over 70% as containerized cargo ships. Coastal hurricanes/cyclones and rainfall flood disasters cause major disruptions for sea shipping traffic, disruptions of port infrastructure, and adverse impacts on coastal communities each year. Additionally, these weather related disasters threaten millions of people, damage infrastructure, and cost billions of dollars in global supply chain disruptions. Sustainable global supply chains, port infrastructure, and coastal community impact by these extreme weather disasters are the …

Improvement And Development Of Analytical Forensic Methods: Arson Investigation And Drug Detection In Fingerprints And Hair, Sarah Anne Glenn
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Forensic science is the cornerstone of criminal investigations. Due to the overexposure of forensic science in the media, the true nature of forensic science is often overlooked. Forensic science is a rigorous exacting science that applies methods developed in the wider scientific community to the analysis of evidence collected from crime scenes. As far back as the 6th century people were using forensics to solve crimes. Since then the science behind forensic science has increased exponentially with new methods being researched and developed. This research aims to address two of the larger subsections of forensic science, arson and drug detection. …
Searching For New Physics In The B-Quark’S And Higgs’ Sectors Via Kinematic And Angular Distributions, Shanmuka Shivashankara
Searching For New Physics In The B-Quark’S And Higgs’ Sectors Via Kinematic And Angular Distributions, Shanmuka Shivashankara
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The kinematic and angular distributions are calculated for the decay Λ b → Λclν l. Deviations from the standard model are expected given the apparent lepton flavor violation in the process B → D(*)+ τ – ντ. Including these measured deviations from the SM, the upper and lower bounds for R Λb = B(Λ b → Λcτ ντ) / B(Λ b → Λcl νl) are calculated along with other observables for a variety of new physics Lorentz structures. Distributions are also calculated for H → W –W+*(or H +*) → τ–ν ττ+ντ via Type II and leptophilic 2HDM’s. Although, the …

A Work-Stealing For Dynamic Workload Balancing On Cpu-Gpu Heterogeneous Computing Platforms, Esraa A. Gad
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Although many general purpose workloads have been accelerated on graphical processing units (gpus) over the last decade, other applications whose runtime behaviors are dynamic and irregular such as ones based on trees and graphs have suffered from serious workload imbalance problem caused by architectural differences between cpu and gpu processors. In this thesis, we propose a work-stealing framework to overcome such problems. Our proposed framework allows cpu and gpu threads to steal tasks from each other as well as within the same device by leveraging fine-grained data sharing and thread communication feature available on modern cpu-gpu heterogeneous systems. The implementation …
Asymptotic Properties Of Polynomials Orthogonal Over Multiply Connected Domains, James A. Henegan
Asymptotic Properties Of Polynomials Orthogonal Over Multiply Connected Domains, James A. Henegan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
We investigate the asymptotic behavior of polynomials orthogonal over certain multiply connected domains. Each domain that we consider has an analytic boundary and is, in a strong sense, conformally equivalent to a canonical type of multiply connected domain called a circular domain. The two most general results involve the construction of a series expansion and an integral representation for these polynomials. We show that the integral representation can be utilized to derive more specific results when the domain of orthogonality is circular. In this case, we shed light on the manner in which the holes in the domain of orthogonality …
Blockchains For Publicizing Available Scientific Datasets, Shirish Patel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis explores the effectiveness of blockchain technology for advertisement of scientific data. Recently the advancement in hardware and software for data processing increases the supply and demand for huge data sets. Such data may be widely distributed, and not immediately available to the scientists who need it. We need a method of advertising available datasets to interested parties. Blockchains are a recent innovation developed by the cryptocurrency community, but are increasingly applied to other problem domains. Due to their currency heritage, however, the properties of blockchains do not always lend themselves to new applications. We have developed a prototype …
