Quasi-Surfaces: Chromatic Numbers And Euler’S Formula, Jinko Kanno
Combinatorics Seminar
Euler’s formula is the foundation for many results in graph theory. Knowing this universal constant associated with graph embeddings on any surface has allowed us to advance our understanding of many foundational concepts in the discipline. In this talk, we describe a quasi-surface, a generalization of both the kbook space and the 2-sphere, for the first time. Natural questions related to graph embeddings such as the chromatic number, and whether or not there is an equivalent to the Euler formula for a quasi-surface are investigated.

Model Misspecification In Statistical Analysis, Qian (Michelle) Zhou
Model Misspecification In Statistical Analysis, Qian (Michelle) Zhou
Probability & Statistics Seminar
In my talk, I will discuss two important problems related with model misspecification. How do we provide powerful tests for checking misspecification in hypothesized models? How do we establish robust statistical procedures for estimating parameters of interest regardless of correct specification of working models? How can these methods accommodate complications involved in clinical and genetic studies?
Fourier Analysis And The Zeros Of The Riemann Zeta-Function, Micah Milinovich
Fourier Analysis And The Zeros Of The Riemann Zeta-Function, Micah Milinovich
Analysis Seminar
I will show how the classical Beurling-Selberg extremal problem in harmonic analysis arises naturally when studying the vertical distribution of the zeros of the Riemann zeta-function and other L-functions. Using this relationship, along with techniques from Fourier analysis and reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces, we can prove the sharpest known bounds for the number of zeros in an interval on the critical line and we can also study the pair correlation of zeros. Our results on pair correlation extend earlier work of P. X. Gallagher and give some evidence for the well-known conjecture of H. L. Montgomery. This talk is based …

Tests For High-Dimensional Covariance Matrices Using Random Matrix Projection, Tung-Lung Wu
Tests For High-Dimensional Covariance Matrices Using Random Matrix Projection, Tung-Lung Wu
Probability & Statistics Seminar
The classic likelihood ratio test for testing the equality of two covariance matrices break- downs due to the singularity of the sample covariance matrices when the data dimension p is larger than the sample size n. In this paper, we present a conceptually simple method using random projection to project the data onto the one-dimensional random subspace so that the conventional methods can be applied. Both one-sample and two-sample tests for high-dimensional covariance matrices are studied. Asymptotic results are established and numerical results are given to compare our method with state-of-the-art methods in the literature.
