Method And Apparatus For Decoupled Thermo-Photocatalytic Pollution Control, Nazim Muradov, Eric Martin, Ali Raissi

UCF Patents

A new method for design and scale-up of photocatalytic and thermocatalytic processes is disclosed. The method is based on optimizing photoprocess energetics by decoupling of the process energy efficiency from the DRE for target contaminants. The technique is applicable to photo-thermocatalytic reactor design and scale-up. At low irradiance levels, the method is based on the implementation of low pressure drop biopolymeric and synthetic polymeric support for titanium dioxide and other band-gap media. At high irradiance levels, the method utilizes multifunctional metal oxide aerogels and other media within a novel rotating fluidized particle bed reactor.

Turbulence Induced Beam Spreading Of Higher Order Mode Optical Waves, Cynthia Y. Young, Yadira V. Gilchrest, Brian R. Macon Jan 2002

Turbulence Induced Beam Spreading Of Higher Order Mode Optical Waves, Cynthia Y. Young, Yadira V. Gilchrest, Brian R. Macon

Faculty Bibliography 2000s

It is well known that laser beams spread as they propagate through free space due to natural diffraction, and that there is additional spreading when optical waves propagate through atmospheric turbulence. Previous studies on Gaussian beams have mainly involved the lowest order mode (zero order). The study of higher order mode Gaussian beams has involved Hermite-Gaussian and Laguerre-Gaussian beams for rectangular and cylindrical geometry, respectively, These studies have developed expressions for the field and intensity in free space, in addition to developing new definitions of beam size in the receiver plane for the higher order modes. We calculate the mean …

Legacy To The People: Community And The Orange County Regional History Center, Robert L. Beatty Ii

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The development and birth of the Orange County Regional History Center is perhaps unlike any other local history museum in the United States. Its story is worth telling because of its long gestation, the difficulties in bringing this center to life, and the goals of the people who made it possible. All of these elements are a vital part of the history of Orange County, Florida and should not be overlooked.

In this light, this thesis will discuss more fully three topics in relation to the creation of the new History Center. First, it will look at the American museum …

Wavelength Tunable Antenna Coupled Infrared Detectors, Glenn Boreman, Christos Christodoulou, Iulian Codreabu, Christophe Fumeaux, Michael Gritz

UCF Patents

A tuned antenna-coupled infrared detector is made possible by application of a bias voltage in the range of a few hundred millivolts. The use of first and second antenna arms connected to the detector makes possible polarization tuning which eliminates the need for bulk-optical polarization filters. An alternative tuned detector is one in which the antenna is frequency tuned by a capacitative device to make the detector particularly responsive to 8 um to 12 um infrared radiation. When integrated into focal plane arrays, these detectors can be used in remote-sensing systems to facilitate enhanced image recognition, feature extraction and image-clutter …

Mathematical Model For The Irradiance Probability Density Function Of A Laser Beam Propagating Through Turbulent Media, M. A. Al-Habash, L. C. Andrews, R. L. Phillips Jan 2001

Mathematical Model For The Irradiance Probability Density Function Of A Laser Beam Propagating Through Turbulent Media, M. A. Al-Habash, L. C. Andrews, R. L. Phillips

Faculty Bibliography 2000s

We develop a model for the probability density function (pdf) of the irradiance fluctuations of an optical wave propagating through a turbulent medium. The model is a two-parameter distribution that is based on a doubly stochastic theory of scintillation that assumes that small-scale irradiance fluctuations are modulated by large-scale irradiance fluctuations of the propagating wave, both governed by independent gamma distributions. The resulting irradiance pdf takes the form of a generalized K distribution that we term the gamma-gamma distribution. The two parameters of the gamma-gamma pdf are determined using a recently published theory of scintillation, using only values of the …

An antenna-coupled infrared detector with polarization tuning over approximately 90 degrees by application of a bias voltage in the range of a few hundred millivolts. This mechanism of polarization tuning eliminates the need for bulk-optical polarization filters. When integrated into focal plane arrays, these detectors can be used in remote-sensing systems to facilitate enhanced image recognition, feature extraction and image-clutter removal. A preferred version of the antenna has longitudinal metal antenna arms extending outward from an infrared(IR) sensor in a spiral pattern, polarization tuning devices connected between the antenna arms, and a voltage for controlling the polarization tuning devices, wherein …

Clutter Modeling In Infrared Images Using Genetic Programming, Liviu I. Voicu, Mosleh Uddin, Harley R. Myler, Anthony Gallagher, Julien Schuler

Faculty Bibliography 2000s

Background clutter characterization in infrared imagery has become an actively researched field, and several clutter models have been reported. These models attempt to evaluate the target detection and recognition probabilities that are characteristic of a certain scene when specific target and human visual perception features are known. The prior knowledge assumed and required by these models is a severe limitation. Furthermore, the attempt to model subjective and intricate mechanisms such as human perception with general mathematical formulas is controversial, in this paper, we introduce the idea of adaptive models that are dynamically derived from a set of examples by a …

Scintillation Model For A Satellite Communication Link At Large Zenith Angles, Larry C. Andrews, Ronald L. Phillips, Cynthia Young Hopen Dec 1999

Scintillation Model For A Satellite Communication Link At Large Zenith Angles, Larry C. Andrews, Ronald L. Phillips, Cynthia Young Hopen

Faculty Bibliography 2000s

A scintillation model is developed for uplink-downlink optical communication channels applicable in moderate to strong fluctuation conditions that may arise under large zenith angles between transmitter and receiver. The model developed here is an extension of a recently published theory that treats irradiance fluctuations along a horizontal path as a modulation of small-scale scintillation by large-scale scintillation. For a downlink path the scintillation index is modeled like that of an infinite plane wave, and for an uplink path we consider a spherical wave model. In both cases the scintillation index agrees with conventional weak-fluctuation-theory results out to zenith angles of …

Transverse Strain Responses In Electrostrictive Poly(Vinylidene Fluoride-Trifluoroethylene) Films And Development Of A Dilatometer For The Measurement, Z. -Y. Cheng, Vivek Bharti, T. -B. Xu, Shexi Wang, Q. M. Zhang, T. Ramotowski, F. Tito, R. Ting

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

A dilatometer based on the cantilever beam concept has been developed. The dilatometer is easy to use and capable of measuring transverse strain response of soft polymer films in a broad strain range (from 10(-7) to 10(-1)) without mechanical constraining of the sample. It is capable of detecting strain over a relatively wide frequency range from mHz to above 100 Hz under different load and temperature. Using the setup, the electric field induced transverse strains of the electrostrictive poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene) copolymer films were characterized which shows that a large transverse strain can be achieved in this class of polymer.
