Eyes In The Text: Surveying The Ocular Aesthetic In Pat Barker's War Trilogy, James Hammond Jan 2005

Eyes In The Text: Surveying The Ocular Aesthetic In Pat Barker's War Trilogy, James Hammond

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In 1991, British novelist Patricia Barker published Regeneration, the first of three novels that portrayed the exploits of both factual and fictional characters during the darkest days of WWI. Barker's Eye in the Door (1993), followed by The Ghost Road (1995) for which she won the Booker Prize for Fiction, completed the series that explored the effects of combat on the human psyche. What emerges as a dominant feature of Barker's war novels is her depiction of the ocular sense. Reminiscent of Orwellianism, Barker's texts contain a seemingly ubiquitous ocular presence. For example, neurasthenic patients are scrutinized by army psychiatrists, …

The Effect Of Tourist Theft On Future Travel Decisions, Judith Lynn Holcomb Jan 2004

The Effect Of Tourist Theft On Future Travel Decisions, Judith Lynn Holcomb

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Past research has shown that theft is a prevalent crime against tourists. This study's purpose was to determine the effects of past incidents of personal theft on tourists' future decisions to travel by analyzing and comparing those who have experienced personal theft to those who heard of such incidents through personal accounts of friends or family. The findings, which were taken from a survey of 215 respondents, revealed that that experiencing personal theft, or knowing of someone who has, is not a deterrent for visiting a destination where the theft occurred. Results also showed that one aspect of theft that …

Wavelength Tuning Of An Antenna-Coupled Infrared Microbolometer, Michael A. Gritz, Meredith Metzler, Donald Malocha, Mohamed Abdel-Rahman, Brian Monacelli, Guy Zummo, Glenn D. Boreman Jan 2004

Wavelength Tuning Of An Antenna-Coupled Infrared Microbolometer, Michael A. Gritz, Meredith Metzler, Donald Malocha, Mohamed Abdel-Rahman, Brian Monacelli, Guy Zummo, Glenn D. Boreman

Faculty Bibliography 2000s

Wavelength tuning is demonstrated in an antenna-coupled infrared microbolometer. With a 300-mV control voltage, we observed a tuning range of 0.15 mum near 10 mum. A metal-oxide-semiconductor capacitor underneath the antenna arms causes the shift of resonance wavelength with applied voltage. We develop a device model that agrees with measured results.

Faculty Bibliography 2000s

The degenerate and nondegenerate two-photon absorption (2PA) spectra for a symmetric and an asymmetric fluorene derivative were experimentally measured in order to determine the effect of intermediate state resonance enhancement (ISRE) on the 2PA cross section delta. The ability to tune the individual photon energies in the nondegenerate 2PA (ND-2PA) process afforded a quantitative study of the ISRE without modifying the chemical structure of the investigated chromophores. Both molecules exhibited resonant enhancement of the nonlinearity with the asymmetric compound showing as much as a twentyfold increase in delta. Furthermore, the possibility of achieving over a one order of magnitude enhancement …

Toward Systematic Control Of Cybersickness, Marshall B. Jones, Robert S. Kennedy, Kay M. Stanney Jan 2004

Toward Systematic Control Of Cybersickness, Marshall B. Jones, Robert S. Kennedy, Kay M. Stanney

Faculty Bibliography 2000s

Visually induced motion sickness, or "cybersickness," has been well documented in all kinds of vehicular simulators and in many virtual environments. It probably occurs in all virtual environments. Cybersickness has many known determinants, including (a short list) field-of-view, flicker, transport delays, duration of exposure, gender, and susceptibility to motion sickness. Since many of these determinants can be controlled, a major objective in designing virtual environments is to hold cybersickness below a specified level a specified proportion of the time. More than 20 years ago C. W. Simon presented a research strategy based on fractional factorial experiments that was capable in …

Model For A Partially Coherent Gaussian Beam In Atmospheric Turbulence With Application In Lasercom, Olga Korotkova, Larry C. Andrews, Ronald L. Phillips

Faculty Bibliography 2000s

Analytic expressions for the mutual coherence function (MCF) and the scintillation index of a partially coherent lowest order Gaussian beam wave propagating through the atmosphere (based on Kolmogorov spectrum model) are developed for the pupil plane of a receiving system. Partial coherence of the beam is modeled as a thin (complex) phase screen with Gaussian spectrum (Rytov theory and ABCD ray matrices are applied). The relation between the second- and fourth-order statistics for a beam with any degree of coherence in the atmosphere is introduced with the help of "effective" beam parameters, deduced from the free-space MCF. In particular, the …

Speaking Freely In A Time Of War, Barry J. Mauer Jan 2004

Speaking Freely In A Time Of War, Barry J. Mauer

Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Anti-speech advocates have made several arguments aimed at critics of the Iraq War. Many of these anti-speech arguments are enthymemes. If the purpose of these rhetors is to deceive others into accepting a weak claim, then enthymemes are ideal forms because they hide the weakest parts of the argument. By exposing their hidden premises, the parts that are implicit but left unstated, I demonstrate that the anti-speech arguments used against critics of the war are not sound. This essay examines the logos, ethos, and pathos in these anti-speech arguments.

The Once And Future Queen: Examining The Importance Of Feminist Readings Of Wace's Roman De Brut, Susan Dressel Jan 2004

The Once And Future Queen: Examining The Importance Of Feminist Readings Of Wace's Roman De Brut, Susan Dressel

HIM 1990-2015

Few scholars seem to think of the twelfth century as an era during which the humanitarian leaps and bounds made in regards to women are exemplary and inspiring. The strictures of the Catholic Church dominated the feudalistic society, and women were encouraged to be chaste, silent and obedient. However, it was during this century that Eleanor of Aquitaine was born. An exemplary ruler, she also was a patron of the arts, and Master Wace, a writer and translator of Arthurian legend, dedicated his Roman de Brut to her. As a queen with revolutionary ideas about female agency, Eleanor's patronage provided …

George Liska's Realist Alliance Theory, And The Transformation Of Nato, Sergey Kireyev Jan 2004

George Liska's Realist Alliance Theory, And The Transformation Of Nato, Sergey Kireyev

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In many aspects, political theory forms a subjective structure of this abstract science. Perhaps, it is due to the fact that unlike natural sciences or mathematics, social sciences often lack the privilege of testing the theories in absolute and unadulterated conditions. Nonetheless, such nature of the science allows for a certain degree of flexibility, when applying political theories to real-world phenomena. Alliances and coalitions in international relations form the backbone of the theory, concerning IR scholars with two main questions: Why do alliances and coalitions form? And, what keeps alliances and coalitions together? As the core of my research, I …

An Investigation Into Providing Feedback To Users Of Decision Support, James Pharmer Jan 2004

An Investigation Into Providing Feedback To Users Of Decision Support, James Pharmer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Research in several domains has shown that the implementation of computerized decision support aids is often associated with issues of human-automation interaction, which can have disastrous consequences. One often-cited reason for these issues is the poor quality of the feedback that is provided to the operators through these tools. The objective of the proposed investigation is to examine how providing feedback through a decision support tool affects operator knowledge and performance in the context of a fault management task for naval gunfire support. A one-way between-groups comparison was made to investigate differences between providing decision support feedback (logic trace, mission …

Social Underdevelopment In Sub-Saharan Africa, Michelle L. Wingo Jan 2004

Social Underdevelopment In Sub-Saharan Africa, Michelle L. Wingo

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

For the past thirty years Africa has produced a more noticeably inferior reserve of human capital than other developing regions. This is puzzling because at the inception of independence, the future of Africa looked promising. However, during the 1970s both the political and economic situation in Africa began to deteriorate, and since 1980, the aggregate per capita GDP in sub-Saharan Africa has declined at almost one percent per fiscal year. Thirty-two countries are poorer now than they were twenty years ago, and sub-Saharan Africa is now the lowest-income region in the world despite the fact that during the last two …

The Challenge Of Playing Multiple Arthurian Characters, Cynthia Lowa

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the portrayal of multiple roles in a production of Camelot, written by Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe. Performance and content analysis identifies and explores the difficulties and challenges in portraying multiple roles in this production, including the understudying of the leading role of Guenevere. A detailed historical analysis provides background into origin of the Arthurian legend and an examination of its historical development. A social analysis provides information on the role of women in medieval society with a discussion of the customs and laws that applied to them. Furthermore, a structural analysis of the script examines …

Area Receiver With Antenna Coupled Infrared Sensors, Glenn Boreman, Christos Christodoulou, Iulian Codreanu, Aristide Dogariu, Christophe Fumeaux, Francisco Gonzalez, Micheal Gritz

UCF Patents

A small array of antenna-coupled infrared bolometer detectors is connected in parallel. This small array is suitable as an individual area-receiving pixel of an infrared focal plane array. These pixels will have better coupling efficiency to extended sources than are possible with individual antenna-coupled sensors, which have a spatial response on the order of one wavelength in dimension. This pixel can be used to provide the advantages of antenna-coupled IR sensors (e.g., fast response, wavelength tuning, and polarization tuning) while increasing the collection efficiency of the sensors to non-laser sources. When integrated into focal plane arrays, these detectors can be …
