We present the results of modeling of nanosecond pulse propagation in optically absorbing liquid media. Acoustic and electromagnetic wave equations must be solved simultaneously to model refractive index changes due to thermal expansion and/or electrostriction, which are highly transient phenomena on a nanosecond time scale. Although we consider situations with cylindrical symmetry and where the paraxial approximation is valid, this is still a computation-intensive problem, as beam propagation through optically thick media must be modeled. We compare the full solution of the acoustic wave equation with the approximation of instantaneous expansion (steady-state solution) and hence determine the regimes of validity …

Enterface is a novella that examines the question first posed by Michael Heim: How far can we enter cyberspace and still remain human? It also explores the power and the limitation of language and the role of stories to shape reality in human life. Its themes are death, technology, ethics, and love. It is informed by Wittgensteinian philosophy, Norse mythology, and the "metaphysics of virtual reality."

We report a large electrostrictive strain in electron irradiated poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene) copolymer at a composition with 65 mol % vinylidene fluoride, which also exhibits a large ratio of strain to applied field (similar to 275 pm/V). The strain response is nearly independent of the external driving condition (unipolar or bipolar field) and does not change with temperature in about 20 degrees C temperature range near room temperature. Moreover, near room temperature, the material can reach a relatively high quasistatic longitudinal electromechanical coupling factor k(33)similar to 0.33.

The primary purpose of this study was to evaluate 'sense of humor' and a humorous external event as possible factors effecting functioning levels of the immune system for immunodeficient and non-immunodeficient populations. Specifically, it was to investigate the degree in which a humorous video effected levels of secretory immunoglobulin A (SIgA) in AIDS patients and non-immunodeficient students. It was hypothesized that all subjects would show an increased level of SIgA after exposure to the humorous video. A greater immune response was expected from the non-immunodeficient group. Polarized fluorescence spectra produced by site-selective excitation, and conventional polarized absorption spectra were obtained for Tm3+ and Er3+ ions individually incorporated into single crystals of strontium fluorapatite, Sr-5(PO4)(3)F, also known as SFAP. Substitution of the trivalent rare earth ion for divalent strontium was achieved by passive charge compensation during Czochralski growth of the fluorapatite crystals. Spectra were obtained between 1780 and 345 nm at temperatures from 4 K to room temperature on crystals having the hexagonal structure [P6(3)/m(C-6h(2))]. On Sport and Society

Isaac Murphy is not a name commonly known in American Sport, and even among those who follow horse-racing it is not likely to evoke wide recognition. But on this day before the Kentucky Derby it might be worth recalling the career of Isaac Murphy because he was one of the greatest jockeys in the history of the event and one of the greatest jockeys in racing history. Murphy was one of many African-Americans who played a major role in horse-racing in the United States until early in the Twentieth Century when African-Americans were systematically removed from the sport.

Polarized absorption and fluorescence spectra were analyzed to establish individual energy (Stark) levels of Nd3+ ions in host crystals of Sr-5(PO4)(3)F (SFAP) and Ca-5(PO4)(3)F (FAP). Site-selective excitation and fluorescence facilitated differentiation between Nd3+ ions in emitting sites-associated with 1.06 mu m stimulated emission, and nonemitting Nd3+ ions in other sites. Measurements were made on samples containing different concentrations of Nd3+ at 4 K and higher temperatures. Substitution of Nd3+ for Sr2+ or Ca2+ was accompanied by passive charge compensation during crystal growth.
