Sex Differences In Host Resistance And Tolerance To The Common Avian Pathogen Mycoplasma Gallisepticum, Chloe Connelly
Sex Differences In Host Resistance And Tolerance To The Common Avian Pathogen Mycoplasma Gallisepticum, Chloe Connelly
Biological Sciences Undergraduate Honors Theses
As we face the threat of global pandemics, one thing becomes clear: biological research is not just about the pursuit of the unknown, but about protecting our future. Understanding disease transmission and predicting pathogen epidemics is more important than ever. Prior studies have indicated that in populations where one sex engages in more social behaviors and movement that sex may drive disease transmission. This supports sex as a factor to consider in the study of epidemic dynamics. Host physiology and immune strategies are another factor that can influence epidemics. Two commonly examined strategies are tolerance and resistance. Tolerance is the …
A Characterization Of The Quadruple Mutant Of The Fgf1-Fgf2 Heterodimer, Kenlee Claborn
A Characterization Of The Quadruple Mutant Of The Fgf1-Fgf2 Heterodimer, Kenlee Claborn
Chemistry & Biochemistry Undergraduate Honors Theses
Human Fibroblast Growth Factor (FGF) was first identified as a protein whose function was to aid in cell proliferation, but now, FGF has been determined to consist of over 23 different proteins in 7 different subfamilies with three different types of cell-signaling purposes.1 In the first subfamily are the two most notable and studied proteins, Fibroblast Growth Factor 1 (FGF1) and Fibroblast Growth Factor 2 (FGF2). Respectively, they are known for their unique capabilities of cell proliferation/mitogenesis and angiogenesis.2 To induce the cell-signaling pathway that leads to the function of these proteins, FGF1 and FGF2 binds to their …
Exploring The Effects Of Microarchitecture On Astrocyte Behavior And Vascular Remodeling In Spinal Cord Injury, Devin Gerber
Exploring The Effects Of Microarchitecture On Astrocyte Behavior And Vascular Remodeling In Spinal Cord Injury, Devin Gerber
Biomedical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a common condition and is characterized by traumatic and progressive damage that results in limited neuron regeneration and thus a restricted recovery. In SCI, the vasculature is also severely damaged, which exacerbates inflammation at the injury site. Specifically, insufficient angiogenesis occurs at the site of injury due to the fibrotic pathological microenvironment1 . SCI also leads to the formation of a fluid-filled cavity and thus gliosis and fibrosis, forming a dense glial and fibrotic scar around the cavity. The microenvironment at the injury site plays a significant role in astrocyte behavior, promoting the transformation of …
Study Of The Stability Of Heparin/Collagen Layer-By-Layer Coatings, Hector M. Apodaca Reyes
Study Of The Stability Of Heparin/Collagen Layer-By-Layer Coatings, Hector M. Apodaca Reyes
Chemical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
Pairing heparin with collagen-based medical implants has opened a whole new area of research for enhancing the desired effect of current implants. In fact, heparin (HEP) and collagen (COL) layer-by-layer (LbL) coatings have shown impressive results in forming polyelectrolyte multilayers. It has been already seen on skin grafts, nerve guide conduits (NGCs), and drug delivery devices yielding promising results. Due to being a simple, cost-efficient, and versatile option to fabricate thin biomimetic films, this self-assembly technique is one of the most effective methods to immobilize extracellular matrix (collagen and heparin) onto medical devices and implants. Even though previous studies have …

Starch Granule And Crystalline Structures With Relation To Enzyme Digestibility, Ana Isabel Gonzalez Conde
Starch Granule And Crystalline Structures With Relation To Enzyme Digestibility, Ana Isabel Gonzalez Conde
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Porous starch produced by enzyme hydrolysis has attracted much attention for its adsorption and delivery properties. Porous starch has been successfully prepared from A-type starch, but not from B-type and C-type starches, which is partly attributed to the surface and crystalline structure. The present study aimed to characterize the role of the crystalline structure and the structure-function relationship impacting the susceptibility of starch with different crystalline polymorphs to amylase digestion. The starches were subjected to chemical modification (acid hydrolysis or surface gelatinization), physical modification (heat-moisture treatment, HMT, or high-pressure processing, HPP) or their combinations prior to amylase digestion, and the …

Teacher Attrition In Arkansas Public Schools: Perceptions Of The Impact Of The Covid-19 Pandemic On Career Choices, Kirstyn Salehi
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The COVID-19 pandemic had a significant impact on teacher attrition in Arkansas, with many educators facing unprecedented challenges and stressors in their work. However, public data does not give context to why teachers chose to leave. This study aimed to investigate teacher perceptions of the impact of the pandemic on attrition in Arkansas through a survey. To do this, the study set out to determine what factors influenced Arkansas teachers to leave or consider leaving, their positions and the impact that the pandemic had on those choices, and what factors influenced, or could influence, teachers to stay in their position. …
Potential Control Of Invasive Mesquite Through Improving The Consumer’S Understanding Of Liquid Smoke Applications., Seth W. Ellsworth
Potential Control Of Invasive Mesquite Through Improving The Consumer’S Understanding Of Liquid Smoke Applications., Seth W. Ellsworth
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Mesquite trees continue to invade forests and range lands in many countries across the world. The cost to remove these trees is staggering. In Texas, landowners spent $25 million over a 10- year period to clear 300,000 ha of mesquite trees, a fraction of the 22 million ha of Texas land affected by this invasion. Estimates are that the mesquite continues to negatively impact one to two percent of additional land in selected counties each year in Texas. However, the problem is not unique to Texas, but rather to the 44 species of mesquite trees, belonging to the genus Prosopis …
Automation Of Life Cycle Assessment, Jacob Hickman
Automation Of Life Cycle Assessment, Jacob Hickman
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
An automation program, named Jacob LCA, was created to help perform life cycle assessment (LCA). The program uses a template file to perform controlled and consistently ordered actions with the LCA program, SimaPro, and effectively removes the need for manual user input. It can be set to run using data from one or more life cycle inventory (LCI) files, which allows for rapid iteration and testing of data. It also partially addresses some of the limitations of LCA by establishing a procedure through which temporal and spatial variations in data can be integrated into LCI files and then passed to …
Does A Single Night Of Mindfulness Meditation Improve Sleep And Stress In Female College Students?, Koushik Thudi
Does A Single Night Of Mindfulness Meditation Improve Sleep And Stress In Female College Students?, Koushik Thudi
Psychological Science Undergraduate Honors Theses
Several recent studies have shown that mindfulness-based practices have been effective in treating sleep problems. However, these studies have primarily looked at multi-component interventions that take place over several weeks or months. No studies have evaluated the efficacy of short-term mindfulness-based practices on sleep the same night. This study aims to do just that. The sample consisted of 10 students attending the University of Arkansas. All participants slept in a sleep laboratory on two consecutive weekday nights. During one night, they completed a mindfulness-based exercise. The other night, they completed a similar control task (counterbalanced). Polysomnography-based sleep data were collected …
Adolescent Perception Of Different Conspiracy-Like Scenarios, Christine Honn
Adolescent Perception Of Different Conspiracy-Like Scenarios, Christine Honn
Psychological Science Undergraduate Honors Theses
Conspiracy theories are claims that are unverified, less plausible than the mainstream explanation, and contain a malevolent actor. A potentially related concept is intellectual humility, which is a person's willingness to admit when they are not knowledgeable about a subject and turn to an expert or authority figure for an answer. I hypothesized that adolescents who are more prone to endorse conspiracy theories in general as well as believe in specific conspiracy theories would have lower levels of intellectual humility than their conspiracy-resistant peers. Participants read eight conspiratorial vignettes and answered questions about traits of the vignettes, then filled out …
A Comparison Of Optical Measurement Methods For The Growth Of S. Cerevisiae, Jackson Black
A Comparison Of Optical Measurement Methods For The Growth Of S. Cerevisiae, Jackson Black
Chemical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
Genetic engineering of living organisms provides the opportunity to express and harvest different proteins from cell surfaces. Yeast (S. cerevisiae) is one such organism and is capable of being grown on an industrial scale. Cellular concentration is an important parameter to monitor while fermentation processes are underway, in order to control the environment inside the growth medium and maximize yields. Spectrophotometry is a conventional method for measuring concentration, but is limited by a narrow absorbance range, and the need for on-site periodic sampling. A continuous method of measurement, as provided by Bug Labs BE2100 non-invasive biomass monitor, would …
Effect Of Nanobubble-Oxygenated Water For Irrigation Of Sand-Based Golf Course Putting Greens, Eric Deboer
Effect Of Nanobubble-Oxygenated Water For Irrigation Of Sand-Based Golf Course Putting Greens, Eric Deboer
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Nanobubbles (NBs) are sub-micron, stable cavities of gas. The properties of NBs theoretically allow long bubble residence times and high gas dissolution rates resulting in the supersaturation of oxygen in water. Adequate soil aeration is a constant concern for producers of agricultural and horticultural crops. Because of their unique properties, NBs have been investigated for oxygenating water used in the irrigation of various agricultural and horticultural crops to increase soil oxygen concentration. Creeping bentgrass (Agrostis stolonifera L.) is the most widely used turfgrass for golf course putting green surfaces. Golf course superintendents use various methods to increase soil oxygen in …

Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The SARS-related coronavirus (SARS-rCoV) is a highly contagious virus that has raised significant worldwide health concerns. It caused outbreaks in 2002-2003 and more recently in 2019-2020 with SARS-CoV-2. SARS-CoV-2 is responsible for the COVID-19 pandemic, which has resulted in a significant global impact on health and the economy. The spike protein of the virus plays a critical role in its infectivity and transmission, and the receptor-binding domain (RBD) within the spike protein is of particular interest, as it is responsible for binding to the human angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) receptor. In this study, we used Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to …
The Terroir Of Swiss Cheese: A Temporal And Geomorphological Investigation Of The Martian Co2 Sublimation Pits, Racine D. Cleveland
The Terroir Of Swiss Cheese: A Temporal And Geomorphological Investigation Of The Martian Co2 Sublimation Pits, Racine D. Cleveland
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Observations by NASA Mars Global Surveyor showed evidence of rough topography on the South Pole of Mars. The topography is the result of CO2 sublimation processes that occur through the changing seasons on the red planet. These sublimation areas are known to scientists as Swiss Cheese Features (SCF). SCF are erosional degradation pits that have been studied for over two decades. Studies show that these SCF increase in area over time, but these values are collected by hand on a per feature basis. Models for the pit evolution have also played a part in understanding these SCF. This work is …
Does Family Size Moderate The Relation Between Resource Transfers And Intimate Partner Violence Rates?, Paul Gramling
Does Family Size Moderate The Relation Between Resource Transfers And Intimate Partner Violence Rates?, Paul Gramling
Psychological Science Undergraduate Honors Theses
Intimate partner violence (IPV) refers to physical, sexual, or psychological abuse within an intimate relationship. It is a global issue, particularly for women in developing countries where data show higher rates of IPV for these women than in developed countries. IPV can lead to physical harm, chronic health problems, and even death. It also has negative effects on mental health, economic stability, and the overall well-being of the woman and their children. Family size has been shown to be a predictor of IPV risk; women from larger families face a higher risk. Cash transfer programs in developing countries have been …
Trend Of Women's Romantic And Platonic Sociality Across The Ovulatory And Luteal Phases Of The Menstrual Cycle, Kaylee Phimmasene
Trend Of Women's Romantic And Platonic Sociality Across The Ovulatory And Luteal Phases Of The Menstrual Cycle, Kaylee Phimmasene
Psychological Science Undergraduate Honors Theses
Sociality (i.e., affiliative behavior) is a fundamental human motivation, and, while it has been extensively researched in the past, little research has examined how women’s menstrual cycle fluctuations may affect their sociality. Most studies examining women’s behavior across the menstrual cycle focus on mating. The few studies that have examined affiliation focused on general sociality ; however, sociality can be divided into multiple domains: romantic and platonic. Romantic sociality is defined through social interactions with a romantic partner, whereas platonic sociality describes interactions between family, friends, and potential new friends. The current study investigated the trends in women’s general, romantic, …
Lignin Copolymer Property Prediction Using Machine Learning, Collin Larsen
Lignin Copolymer Property Prediction Using Machine Learning, Collin Larsen
Chemical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
Lignin, an abundant biopolymer, is a waste byproduct of the paper and pulp industry. Despite its renewable nature and potential applicability in various products, such as plastics and composites, the development of lignin-based materials has been impeded by the cumbersome, Edisonian process of trial and error. This research proposes a novel approach to forecasting the properties of lignin-based copolymers by utilizing a recurrent neural network (RNN) based on the Keras models previously created by Tao et al. Example units of modified lignin were synthesized via esterification and amination functional group modifications. To increase the efficiency and accuracy of the prediction …
Evaluation Of Anaplasma Marginale Elisa Positive Cattle For Co-Infection With Ehrlichia Spp., Grayson Robbins
Evaluation Of Anaplasma Marginale Elisa Positive Cattle For Co-Infection With Ehrlichia Spp., Grayson Robbins
Animal Science Undergraduate Honors Theses
Bovine Anaplasmosis is an infectious, hemolytic disease transmitted by the rickettsia parasite Anaplasma marginale in cattle. A. marginale parasitizes the red blood cells of an animal throughout their lifetime. The beef cattle industry is the fifth largest agricultural commodity in Arkansas, so potential economic losses due to bovine anaplasmosis is a critical issue. Previously tested beef cattle herds at the University of Arkansas’ Savoy and Batesville units have tested seropositive for A. marginale with low percent inhibitions; however, all seropositive animals tested negative for infection on DNA analysis. The objective of this study was to determine the current infection status …
Comprehensive Long- And Short- Read Sequencing Approaches To Screen The Mutational Landscape After Therapeutic Crispr-Editing For Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, Mary Jia, Made Harumi Padmaswari, Landon Burcham, Shilpi Agrawal, Alexis Ivy, Abbey Bryan, Christopher E. Nelson
Comprehensive Long- And Short- Read Sequencing Approaches To Screen The Mutational Landscape After Therapeutic Crispr-Editing For Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, Mary Jia, Made Harumi Padmaswari, Landon Burcham, Shilpi Agrawal, Alexis Ivy, Abbey Bryan, Christopher E. Nelson
Biomedical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is an X-linked muscle wasting disease caused by mutations in the Dmd gene resulting in non-functional dystrophin. Adeno-associated virus (AAV)-mediated delivery of classical CRISPR systems resulting in double-stranded breaks (DSBs) has yielded promise as a curative DMD therapeutic. However, the consequences of AAV-CRISPR require more thorough characterization. PCR-enriched short-read amplicon sequencing at cut sites is the most common method of sequencing CRISPR editing, but PCR bias results in unreliable quantification of on-target edits. We analyze orthogonal long- and short-read sequencing approaches to screen the outcomes of CRISPR technologies at the DNA and RNA-level for DMD. We …
Obstacle Crossing In Healthy Young And Older Individuals, Hope M. Hanson, Ashlyn M. Jendro, Abigail C. Schmitt
Obstacle Crossing In Healthy Young And Older Individuals, Hope M. Hanson, Ashlyn M. Jendro, Abigail C. Schmitt
Health, Human Performance and Recreation Undergraduate Honors Theses
Introduction: In the United States, the average population age is rising and will continue to increase in the coming years. With an older population comes increased risk of injury associated with falls. Falls are considered a leading cause of injury and death in older individuals, and many falls are caused by body imbalance or obstacle collision due to a clearly visible stationary object (e.g., rug, chair, branch). Older adults tend to cross obstacles with increased toe clearance in order to prevent tripping, but much of what is known about obstacle crossing in older adults is limited to artificial obstacles that are …

Design Of A Hyperstable Endocrine Acting Fibroblast Growth Factot, Sara Armstrong
Chemistry & Biochemistry Undergraduate Honors Theses
A novel chimera protein, consisting of the C-terminus of Fibroblast Growth Factor (FGF) 21 and super FGF1, a mutant of the wild-type FGF1, was studied. The protein retained the stability of sFGF1 and the endocrine acting behaviors and binding efficiency of FGF21, so that it could be more practical for therapeutic uses as a wound healing and angiogenic agent. sFGF1- FGF21 was expressed and purified before utilizing various biophysical techniques to measure its stability, secondary and tertiary characteristics, and metabolic activity.
An Investigation On The Effect Of Conserved Hinge Histidine On Influenza Hemagglutinin(Ha2) Protein Conformation Using Md Simulations, Nada Tolba
Chemistry & Biochemistry Undergraduate Honors Theses
Hemagglutinin is a protein on the surface of Human Influenza Viruses.1 It is composed of two glycopolypeptide domains, the HA1 and HA2 domains. Previous studies have found that across different strains of Influenza viruses, HIS435 residues remain conserved.4 In studies where mutations occurred in hinge-site histadine residues, the Influenza virus was inactive.4 These investigations indicated a significant role of HIS435 (hinge-site histadines) in virulence. Four systems were created using Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Each system was composed of an Isolated HA2 trimer solvated in a 150 mM NaCl rectangular water box at 310 K under isobaric and …
Automated Segmentation Of Autofluorescence Lifetime Images Using A Convolutional Neural Network, Nicole Hooten
Automated Segmentation Of Autofluorescence Lifetime Images Using A Convolutional Neural Network, Nicole Hooten
Biomedical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
Chronic wounds affect nearly 1 out of every 50 people in the United States, decreasing quality of life and putting people with potential comorbidities at high risk for obtaining an infection. Wound healing progress in clinical settings is measured by tracking wound size and there are currently no non-invasive, quantitative measurement techniques. Previous studies have proposed nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) autofluorescence lifetime (FLIM) imaging of the wound edge as a method to quantify the wound healing process by connecting the role of NADH in cellular metabolism to wound healing stage. However, evaluation of FLIM images is heavily subjective, as a …
Development Of A Computational Model To Investigate Pathways And The Effects Of Treatment In Fanconi Anemia, Sabrina Kellett
Development Of A Computational Model To Investigate Pathways And The Effects Of Treatment In Fanconi Anemia, Sabrina Kellett
Biological Sciences Undergraduate Honors Theses
Fanconi Anemia (FA) is a rare type of anemia that is not easily studied and can have very detrimental effects. This disease compromises the bone marrow, resulting in decreased hemopoiesis. Symptoms of FA also include abnormalities in the brain and spinal cord, incorrect formation of the kidneys, abnormal formation of the heart and lungs, and a dramatically increased risk of developing cancer. FA can be caused by various mutations in any of the 22 genes that encode for proteins involved in what is called the FA DNA repair pathway. In healthy individuals, this pathway specifically repairs interstrand cross-links (ICLs) recognized …
Effect Of Mating On Male Choosiness In Bicyclus Anynana, Ellie Hope Magera
Effect Of Mating On Male Choosiness In Bicyclus Anynana, Ellie Hope Magera
Biological Sciences Undergraduate Honors Theses
Males mate multiply in many species, including butterflies, but little is known about whether the act of mating influences future male choosiness. We might expect mating to influence future preference, as previous studies have shown that pre-mating social experiences affect future male mate choice. To determine if initial male mate choice affects subsequent male mating decisions, we conducted behavioral assays using the subtropical nymphalid butterfly Bicyclus anynana. We tested three alternative hypotheses: 1) initial mating is a positive experience that strengthens male preference for the previously encountered phenotype; 2) males prefer mating with a different phenotype in their second …

Sequence Analysis Of Herbicide Target Genes In Herbicide-Tolerant Rice, Jonathan Kearney, Nilda R. Burgos, Gulab D. Rangani
Biological Sciences Undergraduate Honors Theses
The tolerance of mutagenized rice (Oryza sativa) lines to selector herbicides was investigated and the sequence of ALS gene was analyzed in plants that survived treatment with 4x the label rate of imazethapyr herbicide. This was done to determine if insensitivity to imazethapyr is due to mutation(s) in the herbicide binding site. Seedlots previously treated with ethyl-methyl sulfonate were planted in the field and 3-leaf seedlings were treated with various herbicides to screen for herbicide-tolerant mutants. Seeds from survivors composed the rice lines tested in the current research. Seeds were planted in the greenhouse and 3-leaf seedlings were …
Effects Of Maternal Disease History On Provisioning, Brooding, And Offspring Outcomes, Sakura Roberts
Effects Of Maternal Disease History On Provisioning, Brooding, And Offspring Outcomes, Sakura Roberts
Biological Sciences Undergraduate Honors Theses
Disease within a population has the ability to shape the development, evolution, and general performance of a species. Pathogen exposure to hosts can influence their physiology and behavioral patterns to further shape offspring immunity. Parental conditions experienced by offspring during early development can benefit survival and fitness (e.g. increasing provisioning rates), as well as help deter against similar diseases experienced by parents. By testing if parental behavior changes can better prepare offspring outcomes for disease exposure, such as disease severity or duration of infection, we can see the beneficial impacts it has on disease dynamics and host-pathogen processes. Incubation temperature, …
Molar Macrowear As A Proxy For Age In A Captive Sample Of Papio Hamadryas, Lauren Conrad
Molar Macrowear As A Proxy For Age In A Captive Sample Of Papio Hamadryas, Lauren Conrad
Biological Sciences Undergraduate Honors Theses
This study is methods-focused, centering around molar crown macrowear and its performance as a proxy for age in a sample of pedigreed, non-human primates. It analyzes the correlation between age-structured variables and molar wear among both males and females in a captive group of baboons. Here, I examined whether wear is significantly correlated with age-related variables (i.e., generations/cohorts) and whether the structure of the “age” dataset differed across wear categories. Because chronological age is unknown, I used documented pedigrees and parent-offspring relationships to group individuals into possible generations. I then used dental development charts to group individuals into cohorts based …
Self-Confidence And Hormonal Contraceptive Use, Abigail Doran
Self-Confidence And Hormonal Contraceptive Use, Abigail Doran
Biological Sciences Undergraduate Honors Theses
Hormonal contraceptives are widely used to regulate menstrual cycles, alleviate certain symptoms linked to reproductive hormones, and prevent pregnancy. However, women who take hormonal contraceptives may experience significant physical and psychological side effects such as increased rates of depression and changes in self-image. The current study examined self-confidence in women before beginning hormonal contraceptives and two months after using them. These participants were compared to a control group of naturally cycling women who were also assessed twice. I hypothesized that women would experience decreased feelings of self-confidence in several domains of their lives, compared to the naturally cycling women. Results …
