A Covering Theorem For Closed And Compact Point Sets., Margaret Gurley Woodall
All ETDs from UAB
The purpose of my thesis is to prove that it is a consequence of R. L. Moore's Axiom 0 and Axiom 13 that if M is a closed and compact point set and Gis a collection of domains covering M, then there is a finite subcollection of G which covers M. All of the work presented in this thesis, including the proofs of all of the theorems, is my own.
Composite Multi-Story Rigid Frames Under Gravity And Lateral Loads., Robert Joseph Schaffhausen
Composite Multi-Story Rigid Frames Under Gravity And Lateral Loads., Robert Joseph Schaffhausen
All ETDs from UAB
This thesis presents a procedure for the design of a 12-story rigid frame bent with composite girders when horizontal loads produce the maximum forces for which the girders must be designed. Using an asymmetrical rigid frame with column spacings of 22' and 28', it was found that a decrease in frame weight of slightly greater than 10 per cent could be realized if the frame girders were made composite in areas of positive moment. Drift was found to increase slightly due to the decrease in girder and column size producing less resistance to joint rotation and larger axial deformations. The effects …
A Species Comparative Study Of The Soluble Phosphoproteins Of Dentin., William Frederick Beegle
A Species Comparative Study Of The Soluble Phosphoproteins Of Dentin., William Frederick Beegle
All ETDs from UAB
The soluble phosphoproteins of the dentin have been isolated from the rabbit, cow, hog, and human. The phosphoproteins were purified by means of gel filtration and anion-exchange chromatography, and polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. They all showed high levels of aspartic acid, serine, and phosphate which is bound as phosphoserine. The data do not clearly suggest that a dentin phosphoprotein exists in the fish. The phosphoprotein of dentin may be a high molecular weight aggregate of greater than 150,000 daltons. The phosphoproteins purified in this study compare reasonably to the majority of the soluble and insoluble phosphoproteins isolated by other investigators. The findings of …

A Survey Of The Mathematics Deficiencies Of The Incoming Ninth-Grade Students In The Birmingham Public School System., Earnestine Sankey
All ETDs from UAB
At the beginning of each school year incoming ninth-grade students wonder what to expect from their teachers. "Is he hard?" "Is she mean?" "Will she give a lot of work to do?" "Is this class going to be interesting or am I going to be bored to death?" All kinds of thoughts probably cross these students' minds when they begin this new experience.

Reference to diabetes mellitus dates back to about 3500 years to the Egyptians, who described a condition in which the victim, among other things, passed large amounts of sweet urine. It was not until 1921, with the discovery of insulin, that it was possible to control the disease. Medical science is still not able to cure this ancient affliction.

The demographic variables used in the study are age, race, sex, educational level, veteran's status, length of law enforcement service, and rank. Political viewpoint refers to the law enforcement officer being politically conservative or liberal.
Secondary Negative Reinforcing Properties Of A Stimulus Associated With Suppression Of Morphine-Induced Abstinence., Danna Lee Rickert
Secondary Negative Reinforcing Properties Of A Stimulus Associated With Suppression Of Morphine-Induced Abstinence., Danna Lee Rickert
All ETDs from UAB
Contemporary theories of learning and motivation assert that stimuli which are paired with conventional reinforcers such as food and water readily acquire the properties of conditioned or "secondary†reinforcers. However, when stimuli are paired with the reduction of aversive drive states induced by the onset of noxious or painful stimuli, generally no conditioning is observed. The results of studies dealing with experimental narcotic addiction suggest that narcotic withdrawal is an aversive drive state which may prove to be an exception in terms of its ability to alter the neutrality of environmental cues associated with its reduction. Yet the nature of …
Gravity Induced Stresses In A Shrink-Fit Disk., Imogene L. Baswell
Gravity Induced Stresses In A Shrink-Fit Disk., Imogene L. Baswell
All ETDs from UAB
Elasticity methods offer many opportunities to investigate the stresses in a system. However, only a very small percentage of design or analysis problems can be treated by application of analytical elasticity techniques. This, of course, is due to mathematical difficulties associated with the solution of the governing equations subject to prescribed boundary conditions. Several techniques of an approximate nature have been developed for the treatment of more complex problems, among them being finite difference techniques and finite element approaches.
Dynamic Analysis Of Diesel-Generator Sets Used In Nuclear Power Plants., Willis Scott Pearce
Dynamic Analysis Of Diesel-Generator Sets Used In Nuclear Power Plants., Willis Scott Pearce
All ETDs from UAB
This thesis develops a computer program for dynamic analysis of diesel-generator sets used in nuclear power plants to supply power to pump motors during accident conditions. First, a mathematical model for each component in a diesel-generator set is developed. Individual models are next combined into one composite model from which the computer program is developed. Results of the program are then compared with actual field test data obtained at the Hatch Nuclear Power Plant and with alternate calculation methods. The computer program described in this thesis is developed to enable design engineers to make rapid and accurate determinations of the ability …
Ultrasonic Attenuation In As-Deposited Inconel 182 Weld Metal And Recommended Techniques For Discontinuity Evaluation., Richard Lamar Lawrence
Ultrasonic Attenuation In As-Deposited Inconel 182 Weld Metal And Recommended Techniques For Discontinuity Evaluation., Richard Lamar Lawrence
All ETDs from UAB
This thesis reports on a study of the problems associated with the ultrasonic evaluation of full penetration welds in pressure retaining bi-metallic and tri-metallic joints involving as-deposited austenitic weld material. The weld joint design was one simulating a component on a nuclear reactor known as a safe-end-to-nozzle. Because the joint is part of a nuclear reactor, explicit design requirements are set forth by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, Section III. Furthermore, ultrasonic examination guidelines are prescribed in ASME Sections III and XI.

Preaxial polydactyly is one of the most frequent limb anomalies in man, and sporadically occurs in poultry, pigeons, and in the hindlimbs of cats, dogs, mice and guinea pigs (Carter, 1954). Polydactyly is detectable by the stage of footplate morphogenesis, but it is inducible before hind-limb bud formation by irradiation of mouse embryos at 8 and 9 days of development (Russell, 1950). Russell's observations are significant because they suggest that polydactyly results from more than minor local disturbances of footplate morphogenesis.

This thesis contains a proof of a generalization of the fact that under R. L. Moore's Axioms 0 and 13, no locally compact and perfect point set is countable.
Curvature Contingent Color Aftereffects., John Fred Whirley
Curvature Contingent Color Aftereffects., John Fred Whirley
All ETDs from UAB
This paper will deal with curvature contingent color aftereffects (AE), a development from the pattern contingent aftereffects reported by Celeste McCollough (1965). After McCollough’s findings are described briefly, the relative importance of spatial frequency characteristics in inducing AE will be discussed. Then attention will be given to AE contingent on direction of curvature of curved line patterns (Riggs, 1973). Riggs’ explanation will be contrasted with those of other authors who attempt to explain his curvature AE in terms of orientation contingency reported in the earlier studies. The lack of attention given to possible frequency interaction in curvature studies is discussed, …

Concerning The Dedekind Cut Proposition., Condi C. Hosey
All ETDs from UAB
The purpose of this thesis is to prove the Dedekind Cut Proposition using two axioms and a few basic definitions. The Dedekind Cut Proposition states that if H and K are two subsets of the arc AB such that each point of AB belongs to H or K in the order from A to B on AB, then either H has a last point or K has a first point in that order.
Locus Of Control Differences In The Acquisition Of Electromyographic Biofeedback Training And In Self-Reported Relaxation Under True And False Feedback Conditions., David S. Siegel
All ETDs from UAB
The present experiment was designed to investigate a proposed relationship between the construct of locus of control (Rotter, 1966) and the ability to learn to relax via Electromyographic (EMG) biofeedback training. The main purpose was to explore the notion, reviewed by Lefcourt (1972), that certain cognitive properties are associated with locus of control. The proposal was that these cognitive properties are important to learning to relax utilizing EMG feedback. Thus, one aim was to demonstrate locus of control differences in learned relaxation via EMG feedback training. Another aim was to demonstrate locus of control differences in the utilization of false …

The physiological, educational and psychosocial development of children is closely related to adequate visual functioning. Uncorrected visual defects can lead to more serious ocular damage. The distorted sensory information may hinder educational achievement as some 80 percent of learning occurs through the visual mode (Sherman, 1972), and inaccurate perception of one’s environment and the resulting inability to interact appropriately in educational and other social situations may result in psychosocial damage.

The question of what role, if any, rapid eye movement (REM) sleep plays in memory consolidation has yet to be answered. Those studies which find evidence for a functional role of REM in consolidation do so by comparing REM deprived (REMD) animals, which are subjected to cold, wetness, isolation, and fatigue, with caged controls, which are subjected to none of these.

The Convergence Of A Sequence Of Functions Defined By Radicals., Eugene Pinkston Cooper
All ETDs from UAB
In the study of Real Analysis one problem which is often presented is to show that for x > 0, the sequence ✓x, √x + √x, ..., converges to a limit function and to determine the limit function. Since the limit function may be expressed as the positive solution of a quadratic equation, a question arises as to the behavior of similar sequences with radicals of degree greater than two.

Maslow (1954, 1962) described the self-actualizing person as a person who is more fully functioning and lives a more enriched life than does the average person. The self-actualizing person tends to fulfill to the utmost his potentiality to be fully human and to gain the greatest potential and satisfaction in living. The term self-actualization refers to the process of making actual or real, of implementing or putting into motion, the potential resources of an individual.
