The Reactions Of Ethyl Ethoxymagnesiomalonate With Some Simple Aliphatic Diacid Chlorides., Collier B. Nix

All ETDs from UAB

Due to the biochemical and pharmacological interest in cyclitols, alone, and in combination with other molecules, the biosynthesis of these compounds has been studied in a number of laboratories. Kiely and Sherman recently developed a chemical model which describes the proposed mechanism for the cyclization step in the biosynthesis of the most common cyclitol, myo-inositol.

Nmr Linebroadening And Contact Shift Studies Of Transition Metal Complexes In Nonaqueous Solvents., Marvin Eugene Harris Jr Jan 1977

Nmr Linebroadening And Contact Shift Studies Of Transition Metal Complexes In Nonaqueous Solvents., Marvin Eugene Harris Jr

All ETDs from UAB

Proton nmr linebroadening studies of dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) +3 in tris (ethylenediamine) chromium(III) (Cr(en)3 +3)-DMSO solutions were conducted between 20° and 90°C. The resulting data were interpreted using the Swift-Connick relationships. The dominant contribution to linebroadening in the temperature range of 20° - 50°C was a second - coordination sphere exchange process. Above 70°C, the dominant process was a mixture of first coordination sphere exchange process of partially +3 dissociated Cr(en) 3+3 and second coordination sphere T2m-1 relaxation. The kinetic parameters for the first and second coordination sphere processes are ΔΗ≠0 = 24 kcal/mol, k1 = 24 sec-1 and ΔΗ≠…

The Uniform Hanging Cable As A Translational Vibration Absorber., Charles W. Springfield Jr Jan 1977

The Uniform Hanging Cable As A Translational Vibration Absorber., Charles W. Springfield Jr

All ETDs from UAB

The small, lateral vibrations of a system consisting of a uniform cable suspended from a mass in a gravitational field and having a lower end mass are considered in this thesis. The frequencies and modal configurations for free vibration were determined. Secondly, a harmonically varying forcing function was applied to the upper mass for the purpose of studying the forced motion of the system. Finally, it was shown that by proper selection of the cable length, the cable-lower mass system can serve as a dynamic vibration absorber for the forced upper mass.

Solution Properties Of Some Iron And Copper Macrocycles., Danny Gene Miles Jr Jan 1977

Solution Properties Of Some Iron And Copper Macrocycles., Danny Gene Miles Jr

All ETDs from UAB

Solution studies were conducted on iron(ll) phthalocyanine (FePc) and three copper macrocycle complexes. Concentrations of saturated solutions of FePc in pyridine, 2-methylpyridine, 3-methy1 - pyridine, and 4-methyl pyridine were determined from visible spectral data, and in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) were obtained from atomic absorption analysis. Kinetic data for the dissociation of FePc in pyridine is reported. Magnetic susceptibilities of FePc in pyridine, 2-methylpyridine, 3-methylpyridine, and 4-methylpyridine indicate the formation of a d5 low-spin radical. In DMSO, FePc is diamagnetic. However, a paramagnetism plausibly explained by a d5 high-spin radical occurs with heating in the presence of methylene chloride. The macrocycle compounds …

Determining Whether Position Specification Of The Relevant Component Within A Cue Is Necessary For Cue Effectiveness., Camilia Gailani Cline Jan 1977

Determining Whether Position Specification Of The Relevant Component Within A Cue Is Necessary For Cue Effectiveness., Camilia Gailani Cline

All ETDs from UAB

The study of audition has in recent years shifted from the investigation of noise bursts, clicks, and simple tones to that of more complex multicomponent tones and their interrelationships. Early research in auditory processes assumed the simplest form, wherein such parameters as frequency, amplitude, and duration of a simple stimulus were investigated. Although sound sources in the environment rarely generate simple waveforms, the research was relevant in establishing the foundation on which current auditory research of complex tones is based. The auditory system functions in a natural environment where a variety of noises, speech sounds, and music comprises the source …

Effect Of Hand Dominance On Rate Of Learning And Bilateral Transfer., Memory Hammond Gleason Jan 1977

Effect Of Hand Dominance On Rate Of Learning And Bilateral Transfer., Memory Hammond Gleason

All ETDs from UAB

People generally have a dominant and a nondominant hand. Dominance refers to the ability to perform a task better with a particular hand [Hand preference does not necessarily mean hand dominance] (Rigal, 1974). For example, a child may show tendencies to be left hand dominant; however, his parents may insist that he use his right hand. As he grows older, he will use his right hand as his preferred hand, but in fact his left hand will be dominant. It would be advantageous to determine true dominance in order to provide more optimal learning conditions. It has been well established (Cook, …

A Biochemical And Biophysical Comparison Of Fetal And Adult Bovine Liver Plasma Membranes., Jesse J. Edwards Jan 1977

A Biochemical And Biophysical Comparison Of Fetal And Adult Bovine Liver Plasma Membranes., Jesse J. Edwards

All ETDs from UAB

A combination of the techniques of differential and zonal centrifugation were used to isolate high purity fractions of plasma membrane fragments from homogenates of adult and 5 month fetal bovine liver. Discontinuous sucrose density gradients were used during zonal centrifugation which yielded two fractions of plasma membrane from each source. In both the adult and fetal samples a light plasma membrane fraction banded at 33 percent sucrose, density 1.146, while a heavier fraction was found at 38 percent sucrose, density 1.172.The plasma membrane fractions were identified by enzymatic analyses of (Na+ +K+ )-ATPase and 5’-nucleotidase activities. Following purification of the …

The Optimum Design Of A Step Voltage Regulator., Kenneth M. Mcwilliams Jan 1977

The Optimum Design Of A Step Voltage Regulator., Kenneth M. Mcwilliams

All ETDs from UAB

Optimum designs of voltage regulating transformers can be achieved only when the designer knows the characteristics of the different design parameters and how they affect the total design. The criteria controlling the design of most voltage regulating transformers are not readily available since this information is usually found in company files or the files of individual design engineers. The criteria used are often based on the experience of these engineers and in many cases have never been verified. This thesis presents some of the common design parameters for voltage regulating transformers and computer generated data showing how the total design …

An Analysis Of The Desirable Components Of Doctoral Programs In Educational Leadership As Determined By A Select Group Of Administrators., Suzanne Whitlock Morse

All ETDs from UAB

The role of the educational leader has undergone tremendous change in the last century. Modern society has placed new demands on the historically set role of the school administrator. The concerns have changed from ones of curriculum and accessibility to areas of accountability and finance. With the influx of these pressures and requirements, it has become mandatory that graduate programs in educational leadership become cognizant of the many new masks that the practitioner must wear.

In recent years many naturally occurring substances have acquired a great deal of attention, due primarily to their biological or synthetic values. -Pinene is the well known naturally occurring substance which is the main component in longleaf or slash pine tree oleoresin. a-Pinene and some of its derivatives have been used as starting materials in industrially applied synthetic organic schemes. Such applications span the gamut from the polymer field to the flavor industry. One such derivative, homoterpenyl methyl ketone, is a readily available keto-y-lactone.

Effect Of Signalization And Temporal Predictability Upon Electrical Brain Stimulation Preference In The Rat., Lynda M. Whitney Jan 1976

Effect Of Signalization And Temporal Predictability Upon Electrical Brain Stimulation Preference In The Rat., Lynda M. Whitney

All ETDs from UAB

A vast body of data indicates that both animal and human subjects receiving unavoidable aversive stimulation prefer that these aversive events be predictable. Knapp, Kause, and Perkins (1959) originally demonstrated this preference for predictable over unpredictable unavoidable shock using rats in a T-maze. They found that the subjects developed strong preferences for a signal-shock sequence over shock-signal. The generality of this phenomenon has been shown by studies which used different apparatus (Perkins, Levis, and Seymann, 1963), varied the immediacy of shock (Knapp, Kause, and Perkins, 1959), varied signal duration and shock duration (Perkins, Seymann, Levis, and Spencer, 1966), and controlled …

An Analysis Of The Impact Of Racial Transition On The Desirability Of Neighborhoods., Betty Joyce Bock Jan 1976

An Analysis Of The Impact Of Racial Transition On The Desirability Of Neighborhoods., Betty Joyce Bock

All ETDs from UAB

Even a casual observation of city life causes one to wonder why people huddle so close together. While there are many good things about cities, they also are plagued by overwhelming problems. Every urban problem evolves out of a historical context. In order to understand the impact of racial transition on a southern city, we must be familiar with how southern cities developed historically and how the racial patterns which caused major urban problems emerged.Urbanization in the South was overlooked by scholars for many years since the region was primarily agrarian. Containing 5 urban centers in 1790, the South had 62 …

Production Of Ultra-Thick Sodium Nitroprusside Absorbers For The Determination Of Mã¶Ssbauer Transmission Integral Parameters., George Phillips O'Brien

All ETDs from UAB

At the 1974 Moessbauer Methodology Symposium, a paper by Agresti et al., introduced a novel method for determining recoil-free fractions, namely, the spectra of a series of thicknesses of absorbers are fitted simultaneously under a least squares minimization criterion to the transmission integral. This technique, when applied to 151Eu (source) and EU2O3 (absorber) to determine their recoil-free fractions, produced internally consistent values for these parameters. However, verification of the values obtained was not easily accomplished due to the lack of literature for comparison. It has been the objective of the research reported here to make a series of absorbers which …

The Interaction Of A Mutant Gene, Paddlefoot (Pf), And A Teratogen, 6-Azauridine, On Limb Development In Two Inbred Strains Of Mice., Cherry Celeste Coggin

All ETDs from UAB

It is well known that mutant genes and environmental agents acting alone will induce developmental malformations. Within the past twenty-five years, more attention has been given to the interaction of the whole genome and specific mutant genes with either chemical or physical teratogens. Results of such studies have been reported in chickens, Drosophila and mammals (Landauer, '48, '60, '65; Goldschmidt and Piternick, '57; Barber, '59; Beck, '63, '64; Dagg, '66, '67, '72; Forsthoefel, '72, '75; Johnson, '70; Hamburgh et al., '70; Winfield and Bennett, '71; Musgrove, '73). Based on these investigations, several generalizations have been made concerning gene-teratogen interactions: (1) …
