Individual Brainstorming And The Use Of Personal Analogies., Lu Ann Penn Jan 1980

Individual Brainstorming And The Use Of Personal Analogies., Lu Ann Penn

All ETDs from UAB

Creativity is the process through which novelty is achieved, this novelty being deemed useful or satisfying (Stein, 1974). The belief that creativity can be increased by training and that the same rules for problem solving apply equally to groups and to individuals has led to the development of a number of creative problem-solving techniques. The purpose of this study was to compare the effectiveness of two such techniques--brainstorming and personal analogies--as well as a combination of the two techniques when used by individuals.

All ETDs from UAB

The discipline of Criminal Justice began in the early twentieth century with the initiation of the Berkeley Police School in 1908 by August Vollmer. This school was the first formal effort to train policemen in the United States. Many of the instructors were drawn from the University of California at Berkeley. 1 Vollmer believed that "the professional policeman would be distinguished from his predecessors by the level of his formal training both before and after recruitment and that new ideas from the universities could provide valuable insights into the causes of crime and the means for preventing it."

Heat Transfer From A Liquid To Gas Bubbles During Formation And Translation Of The Bubbles Through The Liquid., Charles P. Rogers Jan 1980

Heat Transfer From A Liquid To Gas Bubbles During Formation And Translation Of The Bubbles Through The Liquid., Charles P. Rogers

All ETDs from UAB

A preliminary investigation revealed that a significant amount of heat transfer does occur when gas bubbles form and translate through a relatively warm liquid. Therefore, a more detailed experiment was conducted to investigate this heat-transfer phenomenon.A heat exchanger was constructed which used warm tap water as the liquid and cool compressed air to form the bubbles. The compressed air was injected through small orifices at rates varying from 100 to 600 cubic feet per hour. The temperature difference between the incoming and outgoing liquid and gas varied from zero to 10° Fahrenheit for the water and from zero to 60° …

One of the most critical factors for the success of an organization is its personnel. Organizational objectives can be attained only through human performance. In the past two decades, however, the traditional organization theory has been less concerned with police agencies' greatest asset, their personnel.

Seasonal Variation In Benthic Community Structure In Mobile Bay, Alabama., Paul George Johnson Jan 1980

Seasonal Variation In Benthic Community Structure In Mobile Bay, Alabama., Paul George Johnson

All ETDs from UAB

The community concept in benthic marine ecology has long been a subject of intense interest. Peterson (1918) was one of the first investigators to recognize and attempt to characterize benthic com- munities in his extensive surveys of the Skagerrak and Baltic Sea. According to Thorson (1957), Peterson recognized communities as "statistical units," based on the recurrence of a few "conspicuous" organisms inhabiting large discrete areas of his survey.

Copper Complexes Which Catalyze The Air Oxidation Of Organic Substrates., Etim Effiong Eduok Jan 1980

Copper Complexes Which Catalyze The Air Oxidation Of Organic Substrates., Etim Effiong Eduok

All ETDs from UAB

The oxidations of o-diphenols to corresponding o-quinones are known to be important reactions in some biological, industrial, and pollution studies. Proton magnetic resonance (pmr) and optical [visible (vis) and ultraviolet (uv)) spectroscopy are often the techniques of choice for studying the reaction. They require a knowledge of pmr and optical spectral parameters. The studies in Part I were carried out to obtain the spectral parameters for future studies.

All ETDs from UAB

This thesis will evaluate the effectiveness of selected programs created under 1974 amendments to the National Housing Act of 1937. It examines housing subsidy and housing assistance payments intended to provide safe, decent, and sanitary housing conditions for low and moderate income families. The thesis focuses on elderly families living in Jefferson County, encompassing the city of Birmingham, and Brighton, Alabama. Specifically, the thesis will show whether the implementation of the housing subsidy and/or housing assistance payments programs has significantly reduced the number of elderly families who are living in substandard housing between Fiscal Years 1976 and 1978.

Following the suggestion by Smythies that the major hallucinogens, mescaline, N,N-dimethyltryptamine (DMT) and d-lysergic acid diethylamide (d-LSD) all act at the same site, namely, the serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine) receptor in the brain, it was found that 1-methyl-1,2,5, 6-tetrahydropyridine-3-(N,N-diethylcarboxamide) (THPC), a compound similar in structure to the D-ring of LSD (Figure 1), blocked the behavioral disruption in rats induced by LSD as measured by Bovet-Gatti profiles on a Sidman avoidance schedule. Further studies by Christian et al. firmly established that THPC acts as a LSD antagonist since binding of LSD to a high affinity site on thesynaptosomal membrane is completely blocked by …

The Uniformly Tapered Circular Beam As A Dynamic Vibration Absorber., Phillip Britton Davidson Jan 1980

The Uniformly Tapered Circular Beam As A Dynamic Vibration Absorber., Phillip Britton Davidson

All ETDs from UAB

Many standard texts treat in detail the lumped parameter dynamic vibration absorber. Typical examples are the translating mass vibration absorber, the pendulum vibration absorber, and the bifilar pendulum vibration absorber. The common characteristic of these single degree-of-freedom subsystems is that their natural frequencies are set equal to the frequency of sinusoidal excitation of the primary system which is to have its vibration reduced or eliminated. It appears that Vance and Woodward, and, were the first to utilize continuous systems in dynamic vibration absorption. Their work dealt with hanging and spinning cables used as rotational vibration absorbers. Springfield described translational vibration absorption …

A Nominal Group Process Approach To Identification Of Assessment Needs Of Multi-Problem Elderly., Louise R. Thibodaux

All ETDs from UAB

Although nearly 11% of the population of the United States is over 65 years of age, there is, to date, no coherent national policy coordinating services to the elderly (Peterson, Powell and Robertson, 1976) . It is widely acknowledged that the elderly are the victims of inflation, rising crime, and lack of incentive to participate meaningfully in the nation’s economy. Nevertheless, Congress continues to plan for Federal assistance in a piecemeal fashion, treating senior citizens as a categorical group (Etzioni, 1976). Government services ranging from food stamps to crime prevention comprise 134 separate Federal programs administered under five executive departments …

The Effects Of Self-Monitoring And Relaxation Training On Blood Pressure And Other Related Behaviors In Essential Hypertension., Lisa Willis Claeren

All ETDs from UAB

This study used a multiple baseline design replicated across subjects to examine the effects on blood pressure of two behavioral treatments, self-monitoring alone and self-monitoring combined with relaxation training. The effects of treatments on heart rate, frontalis EMG, respiration and self-reports of tension (SUDS) were also investigated. Finally, changes in the accuracy with which subjects could estimate blood pressure were evaluated.Six subjects with essential hypertension proceeded through four treatment phases : baseline, self-monitoring, self-monitoring and relaxation training (combined-treatment), and follow-up. All subjects received the same number of sessions during each phase except the baseline condition, which was extended for three …
