Individual liberty is one of the most important goals men seek and sometimes even fight for today. But freedom can be achieved only by those who live in a democratic society. In a totalitarian society, there is no freedom for the individual because the state has total control over man without limitations. Also, there is no individual movement in politics, economics, society, religion, or education under the realm of totalitarianism.

Factors Contributing To Weight Loss Induced By Intraventricular 6-Hydroxydopamine Lesions In Diabetes (Db/Db) Mice., Mary Ann Pelleymounter Jan 1981

Factors Contributing To Weight Loss Induced By Intraventricular 6-Hydroxydopamine Lesions In Diabetes (Db/Db) Mice., Mary Ann Pelleymounter

All ETDs from UAB

The diabetes mouse (db/db) is a genetic mutant that displays hyperphagia, obesity, hyperglycemia, hypoactivity and hypothermia. In addition, hypothalamic norepinephrine (NE) is elevated in these mice, in comparison to lean littermates. Recent work has shown that central catecholamine depletion produced by intraventricular infusion of 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) in the db/db mouse results in significant weight loss and decreased blood glucose levels. The purpose of this study was to examine both long and short term effects of central NE depletion in db/db mice and to evaluate some of the behavioral and physiological factors that may contribute to weight loss following 6-OHDA lesions. …

Effects Of Deep Touch Pressure On Anxiety., Kirsten Elizabeth Krauss Jan 1980

Effects Of Deep Touch Pressure On Anxiety., Kirsten Elizabeth Krauss

All ETDs from UAB

Touch, in general, can range from a light and barely perceptible sensation to one which is heavy, deep and painful. The sensation of deep touch pressure exists between these two extremes. Deep touch pressure is defined as the mechanical deformation of the skin, coupled with the stimulation of the underlying fascia and periosteum.

A Burn Ratio That Predicts The Relative Extent Of Combustion In Metallic Materials., Raymond W. Monroe Jan 1980

A Burn Ratio That Predicts The Relative Extent Of Combustion In Metallic Materials., Raymond W. Monroe

All ETDs from UAB

The objective of this work was to gain an understanding of the severity of combustion of metals in oxygen environments. Fires have occurred in oxygen compressors, pipelines, valves and storage tanks. A thermodynamic burn ratio is proposed that predicts the severity of combustion of metals in oxygen environments and is favorably compared with published results and with experimental work described. The experimental work measures the severity of combustion using silver, copper-nickel, tin babbitt, carbon steel and aluminum. The thermodynamic burn ratio is the ratio between the heat released during oxidation and the heat required to melt or vaporize the material.

An Assessment Of Alabama's 240-Hour State-Mandated Basic Police Training Curriculum., David Wayne Carlington Jan 1980

An Assessment Of Alabama's 240-Hour State-Mandated Basic Police Training Curriculum., David Wayne Carlington

All ETDs from UAB

Within a period of only a few years, police training in the United States has moved from a situation of considerable ambivalence as to the need for any training of police personnel to a situation in which the need is now widely recognized. Only fools and liars would de-emphasize the priority of police training. However, there remains a wide rift between the nature and extent of the training that is required and the form it should take. Nevertheless, one premise appears to penetrate all debates ; the need for relevancy.

Some historians have focused recently on the transformation of America from rural agrarian society to modern, urban industrial state. Robert Wiebe called the social response to this transition a search for order. The difficulty in applying this concept to historical interpretation is that the connection between the flow of history and the influence of private human motivations can be easily reduced to simplistic stimulus-response reactions.

Factors Related To Grade Distribution In Four Basic Occupational Therapy Courses., Francis Olatokunbo Osikoya Jan 1980

Factors Related To Grade Distribution In Four Basic Occupational Therapy Courses., Francis Olatokunbo Osikoya

All ETDs from UAB

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM:The Division of Occupational Therapy at the University of Alabama in Birmingham (UAB) offers two occupational therapy programs, the Occupational Therapy Assistant Program and the Occupational Therapy baccalaureate program. Both program levels stress competency learning. The assistant (technical) program emphasizes the attainment of intervention skills while the baccalaureate level emphasizes the integration of intervention skills with theoretical bases. The purpose of this study is to investigate the factors related to grade distribution in four basic occupational therapy courses of students in the occupational therapy baccalaureate and assistant programs at the University of Alabama in Birmingham.

An Investigation On The Corrosion Susceptibilities Of Multi-Alloy Total Hip Replacements., Linda Chambers Lucas Jan 1980

An Investigation On The Corrosion Susceptibilities Of Multi-Alloy Total Hip Replacements., Linda Chambers Lucas

All ETDs from UAB

The design of new prosthetic devices with dissimilar metals or alloys in direct physical contact is now being investigated. Previously, the use of dissimilar alloys for the construction of surgical implants has been strongly discouraged because of the opinion that the combinations of alloys was likely to provoke more rapid corrosion of one alloy. With the advent of electrochemical corrosion analyses, accurate predictions can now be made as to the corrosion susceptibilities of materials thus permitting combinations to be considered.Presently there is a design for a total hip replacement prosthesis which combines titanium-aluminum-vanadium and cobalt-chromium-molybdenum surgical alloys in contact. There …

A Synthesis And Characterization Of D-Lyxo-Hexos-5-Ulose From D-Mannose., Rogers E. Harry-O'Kuru

All ETDs from UAB

A convenient synthesis of 5-keto-mannose (D-lyxo-hexos-5-ulose, 20) from D-mannose is described. Methyl 2,3-0-isopropylidene-a-D-manno furanoside was converted to its crystalline 6-0-triphenylmethyl ether which in turn was oxidized at the C-5 hydroxyl group with either methylsulfoxide/acetic anhydride or ruthenium tetraoxide/sodium periodate to methyl 2,3-0-isopropylidene-6-0-triphenylmethyl-α-D-lyxo-hexos-5-ulose. Mild acidic hydrolysis conditions cleaved the triphenyl- methyl group from 17 giving crystalline methyl 2,3-0-isopropylidene-α-D-lyxo-hexos-5-ulose, which was water soluble enough to be easily separated from triphenylcarbinol. The protecting groups on 19 were hydrolytically removed in the presence of H+ form resin to give the target compound 20. 5-Keto-mannose was characterized directly by 13C and high field (400 MHz) …
