Three-Dimensional Finite Element Analysis Of Stiffened Tee-Hangers., Richard John Vatovec

All framed steel structures require moment-resistant connections to join the various members. These connections form a more rigid structure using less steel by distributing the moments throughout the structure. However, the moment-resistant connection geometry combines with the support conditions to produce a highly nonlinear and statically indeterminate stress analysis problem. The applied loads are transmitted through the welds, bolts or rivets resulting in regions of high localized stresses. Because of these practical difficulties, an exact theoretical analysis is not possible. Several approximate solutions have been developed in the past and applied with various degrees of success.

The purpose of the present study was to systematically evaluate the effects of repeated restraint stress on awake, slow-wave sleep (SWS), rapid-eye-movement (REM) sleep and total sleep time (TST) in the mouse. In contrast to the anecdotal notion that stress uniformly produces insomnia, it was hypothesized that stress induced sleep disruptions would vary as a function of the intensity and chronicity of stressor exposure. A repeated measure (i.e., chronicity) design crossed with three levels of stressor intensity was employed in order to test this hypothesis. Forty-eight male random-bred Swiss mice weighing between 25 and 35 grams were implanted with cortical …

Syntheses Of Azido- And Diazido- 10-Methylacridinium Salts., Adana Ocak Muschelewicz

2-Azido- and 3,6-diazido-10-methylacridinium salts were synthesized in good yield from the corresponding nitro- and diaminoacridines. The synthetic scheme involved reduction of the nitro group to an amino function, acetylation of the primary amino group, methylation of the ring nitrogen with subsequent removal of the protecting group and diazotization of the primary amine followed by nucleophilic displacement of the diazonium salt with sodium azide.Synthesis of 4-azido-9-amino-10-methylacridinium chloride was unsuccessful at the methylation stage due to steric hindrance of the 4-acetamido group. An improved yield of 4-nitro-9-aminoacridine is also reported.

Social learning theorists have recently given increasing attention to the role of situational as well as personal variables in predicting behavior (e.g., Mischel, 1968, 1973; Mischel, Ebbeson and Zeiss, 1973 ; Milgram, 1963, 1964, 1974). This recent research represents a trend away from traditional personality theories which emphasize traits as broad determinants of behavior across different situations. Rokeach's (1960) theory of dogmatism, a personality theory akin to the older trait theories which rests on the conceptualization of personality as an organization of beliefs or expectancies along a central-peripheral dimension, having a definable and measurable structure, has been used to predict …

The Agonistic And Reproductive Behaviors Of The Gulf Killifish, Fundulus Grandis And Their Physiological Components., Patricia Lee Mckee Pagel

The behavioral repertoire of Fundulus grandis includes 32 acts, 5 of which are found only in the male. The acts are described and categorized by function.Male-male and male-female pairs were observed for agonistic and reproductive behaviors, diel rhythms of behavior, endogenous hormone levels (testosterone for males; estrogens for females), and male coloration frequencies.In male-male pairs, dominance was quickly established and was not reversed. The dominant male often used homosexual behavior in addition to dominant agonistic acts to express dominance. Coloration frequencies were significantly higher in the dominant male. Testosterone levels were positively associated with degree of dominant agonistic behavior. Additionally, …

Berzelius. discovered in 1817 by the Swedish chemist It was identified in a red deposit that had collected on the floor of a room in which sulfur, obtained as an industrial waste product from a copper mine, had been used; its similarity to tellurium had caused it to have been mistaken for that element. Since the name tellurium had been coined from talus, the Latin word for "earth," Berzelius named his discovery after the Greek word for "moon," selene.

In 1922, Compton [2] first reported reflecting x-rays from polished surfaces of glass and other materials. The angles of incidence required were very large—in the case of glass, 89 degrees 49 minutes of arc—for reflection of x-rays of 1.27Å wavelength. Such reflection of x-rays is called glancing incidence reflection. The phenomenon of glancing incidence reflection is analogous to total internal reflection of visible light. The index of refraction of most solid materials for soft x-ray is less than unity by a quantity of the order of 10 -5, making the glancing angle (critical angle) a few degrees.

Anodic Stripping Voltammetry Of Tellurium (Iv) In 1.0m Nh4, Scn At Rotating Disk Gallium - Thin-Film Electrode., Mojeed Tunde Olayiwola

The electroanalytical technique of anodic stripping voltammetry (ASV), using a gallium-thin film electrode in 1.0M NH4SCN at 60°C has been applied to study the electroanalytical chemistry of Te(IV). Both externally plated and in-situ plated thin-film gallium on rotating glassy carbon disk electrodes are presented. Detection limits of Te(IV) on various monolayer equivalents of gallium plated on a solid glassy carbon electrode are also presented. The sensitivity of this method, which is 1x10-9 TE(IV), is comparable to that of anodic stripping voltammetry using gold-plated electrodes.

Induction motors are commonly used in driving auxiliary equipment in coal-fired power plants. An external source of power must be connected to the auxiliary system for starting a turbine-generator. After the generator speed is increased to synchronous speed and synchronized with the power system, the power to the generator auxiliary is then supplied from the generator itself. Therefore, circuit switching must be used to transfer the auxiliary power supply from one source to another source. Many surgical procedures require muscle relaxation as part of the anesthesia. The reduction in muscle tone resulting from the administration of muscle relaxants renders the surgical field more accessible. Presently, muscle relaxation is commonly achieved and maintained by repeated bolus injections, by continuous infusion of muscle relaxants at a constant rate, or by a combination of these. The dosage of the drug is usually determined by relatively simple clinical guidelines, such as patient weight, height, and girth. The human voice contains many frequencies, but the human listener perceives the lowest frequency in the harmonic series, the fundamental frequency (FO), as the pitch of the speaker’s voice at any given instant in time. Fundamental frequency in human speech conveys linguistic (semantic, syntactical, and lexical) information, as well as paralinguistic (sex, age, and emotional state) content. Variations in FO identify major clause and phrase boundaries, and are used to indicate syllable stress. Stressed syllables, for example, are usually of higher frequency than unstressed syllables and of greater duration.
